Parashah Chayei Sarah means, "The Life of Sarah." Yet it immediately tells of her death. What does this teach us about her life and about ours? Did Yeshua allude to this in his debate with the Sadducees on the resurrection? Learn more in the 5 Minute Torah commentary on Parashat Chayei Sarah (Genesis 23:1-25:18).
According to both the traditional translation and interpretation of Hebrews 8:13, the Torah is "obsolete." But did the author of Hebrews really say this or is this a bias by translators? Is this passage referring to the Mosaic covenant, the Torah, or something else? How can the New Covenant be in effect if the Torah has been made obsolete? Isn't is supposed to be written on our hearts, according to Jeremiah 31, Ezekiel 36, and Isaiah 30? Did Yeshua make an allusion to the fulfillment of the New Covenant in the Sermon on the Mount? Tune-in as Rabbi Damian brings clarity to this pivotal and greatly misunderstood passage to help us understand the promise, the purpose, and the power of the New Covenant.
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Matthew 23:1-2 What does it mean that they sit in the seat of Moses? It means they are making judgments and interpretations of the Torah. Rabbinic Judaism teaches that they sit in the seat of Moses. The Pharisees placed heavy burdens upon the people. Did Yeshua teach that His followers should follow the Pharisees or rabbinical Judaism? All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. Matthew 23:3 In contrast to the Pharisees and their interpretation of the Torah, Yeshua said these words: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 In saying this, Yeshua was referring to this passage from Jeremiah 6:16: Thus says the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and you shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. What was Yeshua saying? That in following HIS Torah we will find rest for our souls! Did Yeshua teach that you should follow the Pharisees, which means follow rabbinic Judaism? (See Matthew 23: 1-3). In the Shemtov Hebrew book of Matthew, the rendering of Matthew 23:3 is as follows: Yeshua is saying, “You are to do what Moses said, NOT according to Pharisaic interpretations, or the Oral law (Talmud) on how to follow the Torah.” In the first century there was a Sanhedrin, and they made determination and announcement of the New Moon and to sanctify it. Originally, when the court would sanctify the New Moon, they would send messengers to light bonfires on the mountain tops to notify the people in distant places. The sun and the moon are given for signs and seasons. (Gen. 1: 14, 16) The moon was given to help us to determine when to celebrate and keep the Feasts. The New Moon determines the date of the annual Feasts. How did we get the exile calendar? Should we follow the exile calendar (the Hillel calendar)? We will look into this. In the Messianic Era, the “exile calendar” will no longer be used. Yeshua will establish a biblical judicial court which will declare the new moon according to Torah and the days of old. Many teach that in Mark 7:19 Yeshua declared all food as clean. We agree that all food is clean. The real question to be answered is what Messiah was really saying. What is the true context of this verse? Did Yeshua really declare all things clean?
What is Chanakah and how is it related to the Great Tribulation? Did Yeshua celebrate Chanakah? "And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication (Chanakah - emphasis mine), and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch." (John 10:22-23 KJV) "Chanukkah, the Feast of Dedication, in which Jews since 164 B.C.E. have celebrated the victory of the Makkabim over Antiochus IV, king of Syria. This is the earliest mention of the holiday in all literature and the only mention of it in the Bible, since the Tanakh was completed before that date (the book of Daniel contains prophecy about the event celebrated). The apocryphal books, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Maccabees, present historical and other perspectives on what happened. "Antiochus, recently defeated in Egypt, expressed his frustration by attacking Judea, ruthlessly slaughtering men, women and children, and invading the Temple. There he carried off the golden altar, menorahs and vessels; and to show his contempt for the God of Israel he sacrificed there a pig to Zeus. He forbade circumcision, observing Shabbat and keeping kosher, and commanded that only pigs be sacrificed in the Temple; he himself cooked a pig in the Temple and poured its broth on the holy Torah scrolls and on the altar." (Jewish New Testament Commentary by David Stern)
