This week's Torah portion says that an animal offering with a single blemish is considered an “abomination.” Is the God of the Old Testament so caught up in things being perfect that He can't accept something simply because it comes from the heart? Why does the Torah seem to be so concerned over these petty matters? If you'd like an honest answer to these questions, then stick around for this week's 5 Minute Torah.

We've all seen televangelists captivate the world with apparently supernatural abilities. Signs & wonders, miraculous healings or physical manifestations that defy human reasoning. Prophetic utterances that come to pass just as they were spoken. Aren't all of these signs of a true prophet? Maybe… or maybe not. Let's take a look at this concept together in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

Then you might want to hang around and see what's in store, in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

The death, burial, and resurrection of Yeshua is central to our faith. His death is seen as the ultimate sacrifice that would forever replace the Levitical sacrificial system of the Temple. But this is a huge problem. According to the passages in the Torah that spell out the parameters of a sacrifice, Yeshua—or any other person for that matter—doesn't fit the bill. So, if that's the case how do we benefit from Yeshua's death? I think we can find the answer in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

If you grew up in a Charismatic Christian tradition like I did, these signs marked the separation between the old era of Judaism and the new era of Christianity. That event supposedly marked the beginning of the church. But what these signs weren't something new, but actually something ancient? Have you ever seen someone that you should have recognized, but you didn't? For some reason you just couldn't place them at the moment. What about the other way around? Have you ever had someone look right at you and not recognize you even though they should have? When Joseph brings his sons to his father so that they could receive their blessings, Jacob asks him who they are. Did he really not know who these two young men were that Joseph had brought to him so that he could bless them? Or is there something going on here we aren't seeing in a surface reading of the text? Please join me as we dig deeper into the Scriptures together in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

In Acts 10, Peter had a dream. He saw a sheet come down from Heaven with all kinds of unclean animals in it. He heard a voice tell him, “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!” He refused, but the vision was repeated a total of three times telling him to kill and eat the unclean animals that he had been shown. We are told that Peter was perplexed by the vision. Why didn't Peter immediately understand it? Was he simply too dense to understand the obvious? Wasn't God telling Peter that He was abolishing the dietary laws He gave to His people back in the Torah, and that he wanted them to start ordering in their Honey-Baked-Ham for the holidays? Or was there a different message the Lord wanted Peter to take away from the vision? There is a very important dream in this week's Torah portion. Could understanding its interpretation be the key to unlocking Peter's vision?

Have you seen pictures where different people see different things? Why is that? Why don't we all just see the same thing? It's because of something called perspective. Each of us encounter life with a slightly different perspective and it can make a difference in how we see the world around us. Some of us can only see the obvious. But others can see beyond the illusion and see what's really going on behind the smoke & mirrors. And that single shift in our perspective can sometimes make or break us. What do I mean? Come join me as I explain the Grand Illusion in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

In this week's Torah portion, Jacob has a dream about angels ascending and descending a ladder that reached from heaven down to earth. It made a huge impression on him and has occupied the minds of many other people for thousands of years. Many years after the time of Jacob, Yeshua told his disciple, Nathanael, that he would see angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” How did he understand Jacob's dream and then use it to explain how he is the bridge between God and man? Let's take a look in this week's 5 Minute Torah.

According to legend, Isaac was the spitting image of his father, Abraham. He did many of the same things his father did as well. This week we read about him re-digging the wells his father had dug many years previously. How does knowing this help us to understand both the mission of John the Immerser in the past and the prophetic events of the future that are waiting to unfold? Zeus. Thor. Poseidon. Legendary gods of mythology who possessed incredible powers. In John 10:34, Yeshua—that is, Jesus—made a controversial statement that has been a source of confusion nearly since he said it. When arguing with the Jewish leadership, he used Scripture to say we are all gods. Does this mean humans are actually gods, that will one day realize our full deity potential as some teach? Is this “god gene” what separates us from the animals? If you've ever wondered about these words of Yeshua, this is the episode for you.

Whether you realize it or not, there's an ongoing debate between those who follow Hebrew Roots and those who follow Judaism over the significance of Rosh Hashanah. Judaism says the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei begins the civil new year, hence the name “Rosh Hashanah” or “Head of the Year.” Hebrew Roots says that's just a rabbinic invention. Which is it? And how can this help us to understand why our Torah reading cycle begins around this time of the year?
