It's Clayton's turn to pick an album, and he brought along Doom Days by Bastille. You probably know this group from their song Pompeii from back in the day. This album looks to continue that success against the backdrop of an apocalypse, but what do the boys think of it? Don't forget to like/subscribe/share if you enjoyed! The number of people sleeping rough in London has almost trebled in the last ten years, with an estimated two in ten ex-servicemen ending up on the streets. Users of food banks in the UK have more than doubled in the same period. Why is our society failing it’s most vulnerable so badly?Blaine sits down with David Tovey, a former chef in the armed forces and survivor of homeless, to find out what led him to set up the One Festival of Homeless arts. David also recalls the heartening story of how a park enforcement officer saved his life, and how the experience had a powerful impact on his own art. This week’s opening thought features Bastille's Dan Smith reading an excerpt from Paul Auster’s 1999 essay ‘Reflections on a Cardboard Box’, recorded especially for TWFF. It’s lovely to have Dan on the pod.David’s instagram is the best place to catch a first glimpse of his artworks as they emerge. And the excellent re-orchestrated version of Bastille’s award winning album ‘Doom Days’ is out now. Links below! At the end of this episode you will hear ‘Endless City’ from Mystery Jets’ critically-acclaimed new album ‘A Billion Heartbeats’. You can buy and stream the album here. This episode of ‘Things Worth Fighting For’ was brought to you by Acast and produced with Matthew Twaites. FIRST THING’S FIRST: Paul obliquely confesses a past sin during this episode, it’s kind of a super tense moment, but Arlo has cleared off-mic that it was not a criminal act! So...do with that what you will! Elsewhere, the world is fucking ending, so you might as well watch The End of the Fucking World. Paul and Arlo muse on the collapse of civilization, discuss proper social distancing etiquette, and recommend things to watch and read as society dissolves. Some of those recommendations: The Hunt, now available on VOD since movie theaters have shuttered; comfy junk food movies like Yes Man and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past; Netflix’s I Am Not Okay with This; Hawkeye: Freefall by Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt; Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber’s uproarious Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen; and, of course, perennial classic Good Burger. Next: Ten years. 400 episodes. It’s all led to this. It’s a shame we’re all dying. THE BREAKDOWN Total Run Time: 02:08:53 00:00:46 - Random thoughts on the end of the world 00:59:30 - Paul interrupts the flow to obliquely confess a past sin 01:13:00 - What to watch / read as we slowly go mad and die alone 02:02:26 - Outro / Next THE MUSIC “Doom Days” by Bastille, Doom Days (2019) “Make Art Not Friends” by Sturgill Simpson, SOUND & FURY (2019)

Woody is the drummer for the ridiculously talented and successful band Bastille. In June, they released their third album Doom Days and it's personally my all-time favourite. I can't listen to their song Joy and not feel exactly that. Being in a band that size and touring that much has to come with some crazy ups and downs, so I was so excited to have the opportunity to sit down with him and pick apart what it's like to live a life like that. Having toured just a fraction of the amount they have, I know how hectic it can get - so for him to be on the road whilst having two kids and a beautiful wife at home - is all sorts of admirable and cool. I loved chatting to him so much. Hope you enjoy! We dive into how Bastille began, Brexit, their intense touring schedule, becoming a Dad, the best gigs they've played, their rise to fame, the bits about the music industry people don't know and much more. That amazing book I was talking about! - The Untethered SoulFollow the Podcast: @wedivedeeperFollow Kate: @katemcgillFollow Woody: @woodybangsthedrumsGet the FULL episodes a whole WEEK earlier for as little as $1 a month!Support the show (http://www.patreon.com/katemcgill)
