Jess Butcher MBE, CEO and founder of Scrollaware on her transition from tech entrepreneur to social advocate for digital balance. The award-winning consumer tech entrepreneur, (most notably with AR pioneer, Blippar), a Fortune "Most Powerful Female Entrepreneur", BBC's 100 Women and three times TEDx speaker, calls for an urgent, more ethical approach to societal tech-addiction. She argues that consumers, educators, legislators... and now business must take action to address the rapid society-wide growth of overwhelm, distraction, negativity, polarisation and loneliness . She shares evidence of the growing shoots of digital defiance among Gen Z and Gen Alpha and cites marketers and advertisers from KitKat to Heineken who are already leveraging cultural changes to shift the conversation. She declares this the next CSR frontier, with the potential for businesses to work together to reprioritise the IRL embodied lives of both their staff and customers.

Walk with Luis on a cold day as he chats about doom scrolling and horror. If someone has high somatic empathy, when they watch horror on a screen, it creates an adrenal response as if the horror is happening to them. Bodies brace for the impact of impending doom, but instead of impact, they move on with their lives in to the world, still braced. How does one interact with their life and community if they are braced for someone else's reality? What neighborhood needs are bypassed if one is living detached from their own space and place? Luis offers several questions to contemplate as we consider our own relationship to horror and somatic empathy. If the horror isn't happening to us, we have the privileged of choosing to feel, or not feel, horror in our own body. In this 250th Episode of the Small Scale Life Podcast, Adam and I talk about Mastering Speed in Business and Life. Speed....it can help and it can hinder. Act too quickly, and you can make costly mistakes. Act too slowly, and you can miss opportunities. The reality is that we live in a fast-paced world and have a ton of things going on in our lives. There is little time to stop and take a breath, and when you do, the little cell phone demon in our hand calls to us and beckons us to Doom Scroll. Yes, the struggle of our modern world is real. While many of us understand that, there is the other side of that coin. Homesteading and moving to the country to start a "simple life" sounds fantastic. Leaving the sirens and hustle of the bustle of the city creates peace and tranquility. However, for some of us, the silence and quiet life drains us. The silence becomes VERY, VERY loud as we need to confront the our shadow. There might be little or no escape! Ask me how I know..... It always comes back to balance. We need to move fast enough to accomplish goals, tasks and objectives, but we need to slow down and smell the flowers, tend to our gardens, feed the birds and spend some time with family, friends, pets and livestock. After all, those tomatoes aren't going to grow themselves, and the deer sheds aren't going to find themselves. Adam and I are going to talk about things we can do to master speed in business and life. For some of us, we want to move faster to get more. For others like me, I want to slow down, savor and enjoy each moment, each monarch butterfly, hummingbird and oriole visiting The Landing. It all comes back to balance. As always, remember to learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday. And that's a good thing! Special Guest: Adam Rick.

Engagement-bait words about the show: Dick Masterson, Biggest Problem In The Universe, Mersh, Patrick Melton. Any of these do anything to your heart rate? I'm trying to scare you, and the only way to save yourself is with a dopamine rush, but you can only get that life-saving dopehit from watching the next episode to find out if big fat silly man is being replaced by new big fat silly man. Dick is selling Vito half of the Biggest Problem trademark? For a dollar? Wasn't that my bit? What exactly are even ideas? What if I just stole Maddox's podcast from him, slapped some Keemstar glue on it and gave it a nice coat of PODAWFUL paint? That's technically a new thing. This is transformative because the guy I'm stealing it from paid for it. Vito now lives inside a Lolcow barnyard prison, where Juju is the farmer. What do these words even mean? Tonight we pay tribute to the entirety of our first hour to the Latin/low rider soul inspirations that have continually provided that extra ease and Spanish flare to our favorite genre over the years. Nods to Sunny Ozuna, Fania Records, Sly Slick & Wicked, along with the new exponents in the movement such as Big Crown, Colemine, Bobby Oroza, Thee Sinseers, and many others on the playlist.
