Hello Folks, Randall here: Have you heard about the archaeological wonder known as "Cart-ruts"? They are yet another fascinating part of Earth's ancient history that continue to baffle both archeologist and geologist alike. In short, they are parallel grooves or tracks cut into solid bedrock surfaces. They appear as pairs of channels worn into solid rock, resembling wheel tracks left by ancient carts or wagons, hence the name "Cart Ruts," and they have been found in a wide variety of locations around the world. About 5 years ago I was visiting my friends Russ and Kyle Allen in Texas. One of the places they brought me to see was a complex of cart ruts near Austin. I was not familiar with the phenomenon at that time but came away intrigued and very curious about an explanation that made sense. The grooves can be half a foot deep, in some cases more, and the distance between the ruts appear to be consistent with the size and scale of a typical horse drawn cart– yet they are depressed into the hard rock surface?! Expect targeted moves over splashy pursuits. Free Agency, Not a Spending Spree Big-ticket names sit out there. Hendrickson was the example. Tyler Lindenbaum at center came up too. Both would be great. Both feel unlikely. A bidding war does not fit the Lions plan. The focus is cost, fit, and familiarity. Scheme matters. Character matters. Past connections to Lions coaches and staff matter. That is the lane. Smart contracts for players who match what the Detroit Lions do, not headline chases. The door is open to being surprised, but the expectation is restraint. Quarterback Room: Keep It Steady The quarterback spot is simple. The team is built around Jared Goff. Kyle Allen as a solid No. 2 works. Bring him back and keep the operation clean. If Allen returns, there is no need to add another veteran. Detroit can still bring in a project as a No. 3. Think a UFL quarterback or an undrafted rookie. Even a low-cost trade for a developmental arm was mentioned. Sam Howell was floated for a laugh more than football reasons. Status quo at quarterback is fine. Backfield Help and a Budget WR4 Running back is a need. The question is investment level at RB2 now that David Montgomery is gone. Detroit wants a complement to Jamir Gibbs. Eight to twelve touches per game. Reliable hands. Good pass protection. A runner who hits the crease without delay. Wilson was the top name on the realistic board. A sturdy between-the-tackles runner with dependable receiving. He has been a second option before and can be that again next to Gibbs. Later in the market, an Isaiah Pacheco type fits too. Downhill. Short-yardage strength. Willing in pass protection. A past knee injury was noted, but the style matches what the Lions can afford if they avoid high prices. At wide receiver, the top three are set, with Saint Jr. and Teslaa among the group. They will command most of the targets. Kalif Raymond can return as the kick returner on a short deal. Another team might view him as a WR3, so price matters. Detroit should not pay a premium for WR4. A ring-chasing veteran could still make sense. DeAndre Hopkins fits if the number is small. Think a one-year, 3.5 million dollar deal with incentives. Strong hands. Savvy routes. Willing blocker. He knows he is not the feature. It is not a priority, and the money may play better elsewhere, especially with internal options like Dominic Lovett coming. Jared Goff threw for 334 yards and five touchdowns with zero interceptions. Jahmyr Gibbs ripped 94 yards on the ground. David Montgomery added 57. Jameson Williams cleared 100 receiving yards and turned short catches into three touchdowns under 15 yards. The defense took the ball away twice and rang up four sacks. Tyson Bagent mopped up in garbage time. Jack Campbell flashed. Aidan Hutchinson collected a pair. Brian Branch made plays. It felt like a statement. After a flat Week 1 in Green Bay, that win reset the temperature on the season. For a minute, Detroit sat atop NFL power polls and looked like the class of the NFC. That broadcast stung a little. It reminded everyone what this roster looked like at full strength and how quickly it turned. Promise met attrition. Confidence met slippage on both sides of the ball. The Week 2 tape is still proof of concept. It is also a measuring stick for what has been lost. From Firepower to Triage The current injury sheet is brutal. Alex Anzalone is out with a concussion after a failed midweek push. Penei Sewell is out. Alim McNeill is out with an abdominal injury. Kerby Joseph is out. Brian Branch is out. Sam LaPorta is out. S C.J. Moore's replacement depth has thinned, and even “Harper” snaps matter now because the room is down three safeties. Avonte Maddox will play, but the secondary is patched together. Up front, the tackle plan is a guess. Giovanni Manu was not activated. Miles Frazier could be forced into a spot. Dan Skipper likely logs heavy work. Maybe “Yode” slides outside. Taylor Decker is fighting through it and has earned the benefit of the doubt. None of that stabilizes protection. It raises a real question about whether Goff should finish the season finale behind a compromised line. The idea of Kyle Allen getting meaningful snaps has merit. It is evaluation and preservation rolled into one. Season Finale Math The finale arrives tomorrow with little on the line for the Detroit Lions in the NFL standings. The Bears, the team Detroit roasted in September, have since won the division and are chasing the two seed. They get Green Bay next week. That development colors the mood. Detroit once ran away from Chicago. Now the roster is a shell of that September juggernaut. The calculus is simple. Health over hollow pride.
