It's the final lap of our epic look at every issue of this legendary run! With Linda Park erased from history and Wally West merged with the Speed Force (again), a grimmer and grittier speedster takes over Flash duty. We'll talk about the end of Mark Waid's (and Brian Augustyn's) tenure on the title, the transition to the Geoff Johns era, and the awkward batch of issues in between. Plus, we offer our highlights and lowlights of the entire run and reflect on the big picture: what these hundred-plus issues meant to us and to the development of superhero comics as a whole. Discussed in this episode: Flash #151-163, plus other stories. We couldn't have done this without the support of our backers! Help support us at patreon.com/ironageofcomics !

Who is Cobalt Blue? Well, we'll tell you, but you might not like the answer! In 1997, Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn took a 12-issue vacation from the ongoing Flash series to recharge their batteries. But during this so-called “hiatus,” they were busy collaborating on a number of stories and even a 96-page hybrid prose/graphic novel that would set up their upcoming “Chain Lightning” storyline, billed as “the ultimate Flash epic.” Fans didn't react well to the shocking retcon that kicked off the story, but we found the resultant time-travel romp to be a bit of an overlooked gem, introducing a thousand years of potentially interesting speedsters to the DC Universe. PLUS! Don't miss the wedding of Wally West and Linda Park (Take One)! Discussed in this episode: The Flash #142-150 and #1,000,000, plus The Life Story of The Flash (1997) and other stories. Conspicuous by their absence throughout most of this run, the villains of the Rogues Gallery return to menace the Flash. But Mark Waid (and newly credited co-writer Brian Augustyn) put the main focus back on the dynamic between Wally West and Linda Park, as they argue about how much information to reveal to the public about an impending global disaster, negotiate the Flash's exile from Keystone City to his new home turf of Santa Marta, California, and find their commitment to each other put to the ultimate test when the devil Neron comes looking to make a deal. We'll also examine some side projects looking at Wally's relationship with some of his superhero peers: Dick (Nightwing) Grayson and Kyle (Green Lantern) Rayner.TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of fictional presidential election. Discussed in this episode: The Flash #119-129, plus Flash/Green Lantern: Faster Friends #1-2, Flash Plus Nightwing (1997), and other stories.Support us on Patreon at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

We're releasing another Patreon episode from the vault as we discuss the first DC Elseworlds comic Gotham by Gaslight by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. But first, are we chillin? Is Cody drinking in honor of his grandpa? Are Anthony's dark secrets dark enough? Did Jake make Cody cry at Anthony's wedding? How does Mignola's art make the comic feel more gothic and creepy? Is this the first DC Elseworlds story? How does this compare to Marvel 1602? How do we feel about the Gotham by Gaslight sequel Master of the Future? Is Jake the gaslighter of the podcast? Does Batman work in any time period? Is Sigmund Freud in this comic? How does this story twist Batman's origin? What role does Jack the Ripper play in this comic? How much do we know about serial killers? What do we think about the movie Eurotrip? Who would win in a serial killer battle royale? Was Dexter overrated? Did True Blood fall off? Was Harvey Dent cast in The Batman 2? Are we looking forward to season 2 of The Sandman? What are some of our other favorite DC Elseworlds comics? What are the official drinks of Comics and Chronic? What gaslighting dark secret does Cody have for us in this episode? What Batman stories are making it in our top 20? How do we feel about Zur-En-Arrh Batman and Bat-Mite? Would Danny DeVito make a good Mr. Mxyzptlik? Is James Gunn one of our Patrons? Are we excited for the Marvel 1943 video game? Do we like the animated movie version of Gotham by Gaslight? Breaking in with Marvel UK and 2000 AD (the one-two punch for many British comics creators), artist Barry Kitson has enjoyed a long and influential career. You may know him from Transformers (with past guest Simon Furman),  his early DC work on L.E.G.I.O.N. and Azrael, or from the classic JLA: Year One (with writers Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn). He reteamed with Waid on Empire, a fantastic, underrated series about a supervillain who actually conquered the world. It started at the Image imprint Gorilla Comics, but was completed at DC. Since then, he's been a steady presence at DC and Marvel, penciling everything from The Titans and Legion of Super-Heroes to the Amazing Spider-Man and The Order.  You can follow Barry on all the socials: @BarryKitsonArt.__________________________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Episode 140!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Gotham By Gaslight". Lex is off this week so I brought in special guest host Dustin to help me parse through one of our favorite elseworlds tales; A Tale of the Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Considered to be the first Elseworlds story in which DC Comics characters from alternate timelines or realities are featured in stories outside of the DC Universe canon. Gotham by Gaslight is a re-imagining of Batman in the Victorian era. Batman is a Victorian vigilante who scours the dark streets of Gotham City to find the elusive and infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper. This single-issue story was released in 1989 and was written by Brian Augustyn, penciled by Mike Mignola, inked by P Craig Russell, and colored by David Hornung. Note: this interview took place before the sudden passing of Rag's Black Condor collaborator, Brian Augustyn.Rags Morales did not create Ragman. That we can tell you. He did, however, co-create the 90s version of Black Condor (aka the best version). He did, however, get his start on Forgotten Realms and followed that and Condor with a stint at Valiant. He did, however, then work on JSA titles like Hourman and Hawkman (with Geoff Johns), before hitting his stride with the seminal crossover whodonit Identity Crisis. So that's a lot. I think we can forgive him for not creating Ragman now. You can follow Rags on Facebook at facebook.com/ragsmorales or at ragsagainstthemachine.net. ____________________________________You can find a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.Check out and subscribe to YEET Presents on Patreon: patreon.com/yeetmagazine.Email us at dollarbinbandits@gmail.com. Rising Canadian cartoonist superstar Julien Pilon (currently under contract with Comic House) joins our two comics aficionados to talk about this 1989 graphic novel where a turn of the century Batman goes up against the infamous Jack the Ripper! Set in 1989, this story sees a young Bruce Wayne don the Batman cowl for the first time after returning from his overseas studies and training. But Batman is not the only creature skulking around Gotham...! Written by Brian Augustyn with art by Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell, this is a fascinating take on Batman and is the first of DC's Elseworlds' stories which reimagine our favourite characters in new settings. The three of us are huge Batman fans and huge Mignola fans (be sure to check out our second episode on "Bram Stoker's Dracula"), and dive deep into the nature of collaboration in comics. Julien and Matt have collaborated on two short stories ("The Last Woman on Earth: The Path I Follow" published in Issue 3 of "Monsterella" by "Hangman Comics" and "Haunt'd: Second Story/Up All Night" published by Frisson Comics and Hangman Comics) and are working together on a graphic novel. For anyone who is interested in writing for an artist, the end of the episode will be a real treat as Julien explains how a writer can give their artist the freedom to elevate a script. And this episode brings our first season to a close! Matt and Cale have been working on this podcast for an entire year and we both need to take some time off to recharge and focus on other projects. Our two comics aficionados tackle the first volume (issues 1-5) of the Vertigo series, “Y: The Last Man” before the TV adaptation premiers of FX and Hulu! Co-created by writer Brian K. Vaughn and penciler Pia Guerra (with inks by Jose Marzan Jr.), this 60-issue series took place in a world where a virus wipes out every creature on Earth with a Y chromosome except for amateur escape artist Yorick Brown and his helper monkey, Ampersand. Yorick teams up with the secretive Agent 355 and geneticist Dr. Leslie Mann to uncover the cause of the virus and hopefully save the human race! We specifically only discuss events that take place during the first trade paperback, so there will be no spoilers for anyone who hasn't completed this series, but we think once you read this first volume, you'll want to read the rest! This is an alternate universe take on Batman where he patrols the streets of Victorian era Gotham City, protecting it from Jack the Ripper. In this episode of Graphic Novel Explorers Club the gang discusses the ties between Gotham by Gaslight and Star Trek: The Original Series; the proper terminology for a group of bats; why even Sigmund Freud could not fix Bruce Wayne; which one of the gang should not speak into a microphone at public events; why Victorian-era Gotham was using the “@” for posting before social media was even a thing; discovering a new way to spoil a comic book's plot twist; how tragedy always falls on Marlon Wayans, SW1, and the rest of the Wayans; why we need to bring “Brigand” back; will comic books being published 100 years from now ever feature contemporary people like Ted Kazinsky and Jeffrey Dahmer as the nemesis to the hero; and if comic book characters are trapped in hell.Thank you for listening to Graphic Novel Explorers Club. Please share your opinions and thoughts on Twitter, Facebook, or at GNExplorersClub@gmail.com (we would love to hear your suggestions for Season 2 of the show). We return next week to review The Legend of Luther Strode, as written by Justin Jordan and illustrated by Tradd Moore. We embedded a link to purchase the book online but we encourage you to shop at your local comic book store to purchase any of the graphic novels we at Graphic Novel Explorers Club have read. Please check out our reading lists for Season 1 and Season 2 by clicking here. We’re talking about Batman again! Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is the thirtieth film in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, serving as a stand-alone feature based on the one-shot graphic novel of the same name by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. Directed and produced by Sam Liu and written by James Krieg, we’ve got the voice talents of Bruce Greenwood, Jennifer Carpenter, Anthony Head, John DiMaggio, and Tara Stong. In Victorian era Gotham City, Bruce Wayne is operating as the bat-garbed vigilante, the Batman, who is feared by the guilty and the innocent alike. In this mystery thriller, Batman scours the dark streets of Gotham to find the elusive serial killer Jack the Ripper. Unfortunately, one of the main suspects is Bruce Wayne himself.

We have a special guest on this week's episode: Brian Augustyn, writer and editor at DC Comics in the 80's and 90's. Augustyn wrote the seminal graphic novel and first "Elseworlds" tale Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, and co-wrote Justice League:Year One and The Flash with Mark Waid. We're talking about the party scene at Lex Luthor's house, which includes the first appearance of Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman. Even though the show hosts didn't like Batman v Superman overall, we really did enjoy this scene where all of the major players are in the same room. We also get waaaay off topic talking about some of Brian Augustyn's experiences at DC, including an amazing anecdote featuring Mark Hamill. If you're a fan of 90's DC Comics you're going to love this episode. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
