This week I welcome the talented, genuine and generous Tom Bright onto the podcast. Tom is a musician and songwriter, who has gone from strength to strength since his debut album Self-Service Checkout in 2020. Since then he has gone on to feature on the One Show, BBC Radio 2, BBC 5 Live, Radio X, as well performing at iconic venues and festivals such as the London Palladium, Shepherd's Bush Empire and Glastonbury Festival. As well as playing his own headline shows throughout Europe, he has also supported The Libertines, The Leisure Society, Mystery Jets, Tom Grennan and Reverend & The Makers, to name but a few. His music also spent two years featuring on Spotify's 'Most Beautiful Songs in the World' playlist. Before his musical endeavours, Tom was once the UK's youngest pub landlord, and is also a former patient of Great Ormond Street Hospital, undergoing a multitude of major life-saving operations. His third album, ‘Somewhere Anywhere' - produced by Ed Harcourt and mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios - was released in October 2023 and is his most personal and reflective work to date. Tom has been a real inspiration and help to me as well as other young musicians by hosting Bright Nights, an open mic event across London that seeks to showcase new and emerging talent in the music industry. It was a pleasure to talk to him, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you would like to support the podcast, you can make a contribution on buymeacoffee.com/starvingart , all money goes back into paying for and improving the podcast.
This week on Disabled and Proud Brooke Millhouse is joined by Blaine Harrison, lead singer of Mystery Jets. Blaine was born with the disability spina bifida, which has affected his leg muscles since he was a child. In the early stages of his life he struggled to come to terms with his disability but now he is a proud role model for other people living with disabilities. For him, playing live as someone with a physical impairment is sometimes hard work, seeing as many modern facilities still do not have the means to cater for disabled people. Blaine is an advocate for venue accessibility and his band will only play in venues that have made an effort to cater for people with disabilities. In this episode you will hear: Blaine's struggle to accept his disability What it is like to be a touring musician with a disability Why more venues and festivals should improve their accessibility How Blaine's health affected his ability to perform with his band Mystery Jets Enjoyed this show? Tell us your favourite moment by connecting with Brooke via https://www.instagram.com/disabledandproudpodcast/ About This Show: Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Each week this podcast highlights an awesome disabled guest speaking about their own disability; why they are proud to be disabled and why they are proud to be themselves. The conversations in this show will look at what challenges these amazing people face socially, mentally, physically and life in general. This show is raw, open, honest, funny, welcoming and educational. Disabled & Proud does exactly what is says on the tin! And whilst we are creating this space for disabled people to be unashamedly themselves, without need to conform for society, this is also not about toxic positivity. This show will be shining a big, bright light on disability without it being “Paralympic or pity”. As you will hear disability is WHOLE, COMPLETE & PERFECT and whilst the topic of disability can be quite heavy - and we definitely don't shy away from the bad days - this podcast is also about having fun too! Our aim is to play a part in reclaiming the word disability - turning it from inadequacy to perfection!
Our series of bonus podcasts continues with Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris from The Kooks picking their favourite albums of the 00s. First up, Hugh goes with Panic Prevention by Jamie T - an album we've repeatedly praised on this podcast! Hugh hails Jamie's musical skill and craft, as well as his range of influences, and tells us about a tour featuring The Kooks, Jamie T, Mystery Jets and Larrikin Love. What a line up! Find out why he calls Jamie T "our Ed Sheeran"! Luke then goes with The Strokes' second album Room on Fire - another fantastic choice. Luke calls the Strokes the most influential band in the last 20 years and we discuss the impact they had on The Kooks musically and stylistically. The Kooks fan? Another fortnight's passed and we're already at the point of only being happy about the Euros for the excuse to drink on a school night - seriously, how are people still talking about it when there's so much better about to watch? This week we delve into Season 2 of Feel Good and Becoming A God In Central Florida, plus of course the books we've been devouring (Tabitha Lasley's extraordinary Sea State and David Mitchell's riotous Utopia Avenue) along with our favourite short-form literature: stupid tweets, and we may have beaten the toenail one. Our guest this week is the serene and beautifully cerebral Lamorna Ash, author of previous BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week Dark, Salt, Clear: Life in a Cornish Fishing Town. In her honest, hilarious and heartwarming chat with Becky, they discuss what drew her to drop life as she knew it and move to Newlyn, the friendships she found there and of course, what gets her enthused on the daily. If you're a fan of writing, pasta and cult movies, you're gonna love it.And for the big one... For a while now we've been beavering away behind the scenes and we are finally delighted to announce OUR FIRST LIVE SHOW! On Wednesday 21st July you can join us at the beautiful Ocean Studios in Plymouth (or if you're further afield, online) for an evening of chat, performances, food, beers and bants. We cannot WAIT, especially given that we'll be joined for a live podcast recording by Suzy Bennett, award-winning Plymouth-based comedian you may know from support dates for Jimmy Carr and more, and the glorious also award-winning, Glastonbury and Maida Vale-playing, Mystery Jets and Robert Plant supporting Ferris & Sylvester! We know too that everyone's erring towards being stone cold broke (us too) and so the tickets are pay what you feel and in limited numbers. We can't wait to see you there!! Aneurin Bevan established the National Health Service in 1948 on three core principles: that it meets the needs of everyone, that it be free at the point of delivery, and that it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay. 72 years later it continues to carry out that promise, day in, day out. But how many more storms of austerity cuts can it endure?Blaine meets paediatric doctor and Sunday Times best-selling author Dr Rachel Clarke, to hear how her sleepover protest outside the Department of Health ignited the Junior Doctor strikes in 2016. Throughout modern times, some of the most effective campaigns for positive change have been led by young people. It is estimated that over 6 million people took part in the Global Climate Strikes in September 2019, and at the helm were School Children marching for their future.Whether environmental justice is being called for at a geo-political level or in the streets, history has taught us that rarely is one effective without the other. Blaine sits down with 17 year-old Bella Lack, an ambassador for the Born Free Foundation, The Jane Goodall Institute and the RSPCA to hear how her passion for wildlife conservation have fuelled her activism and documentary work. The Deadline Report - Ben Vidgen Investigates. A double shot of reality.
The term ‘Toxic Masculinity’ has come to represent society’s expectation that men be active, aggressive, tough, daring and dominant. Some believe this narrative to form part of a politically-motivated war on men, whilst others argue men should be encouraged to share their vulnerabilities, failures and doubts, so as to spark a bigger conversation. With Suicide the most common cause of death for men under the age of 50 in the UK, are we having enough of these difficult conversations?Blaine travels to IDLES’ hometown of Bristol, to talk with vocalist Joe Talbot about male vulnerability, overcoming grief and to hear about his experiences over the band’s meteoric rise, ahead of the release of their mighty UK No1 third album, Ultra Mono. This week’s opening thought comes from Frank Carter, vocalist with Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, speaking about the pressure on men today to measure up against outdated male archetypes. At the end of this episode you will hear ‘Watching Yourself Slowly Disappear’ from Mystery Jets’ critically-acclaimed new album ‘A Billion Heartbeats’. Larrikin Love burned briefly but brightly and their brilliance is reflected in the fact they have been the most-requested interview by The Boys in the Band Podcast listeners since we launched. We're delighted to chat with drummer Coz Kerrigan about their story. From the early days deciding to start a band at a The Others gig and the 'Coz Kerrigan Clause 24' in their record label deal due to him being just 17, through to their acclaimed album and the reasons for their split, we hear it all. Coz also chats about the great friendships the band struck up with fellow indie stars the Mystery Jets and Jamie T, picks out his favourite tracks, and relives some standout shows. Larrikin Love fan? Studies show that the average smartphone user checks their screen up to 150 times per day, scrolling through an Eiffel Tower’s worth of posts. Meanwhile rates of anxiety have soared in young people, and scientists tell us that we’re lonelier than ever. But movements like #MeToo and BLM have shown that social media can also be a powerful tool in the fight for inclusivity and social justice. In Part Two of this special bumper episode of the pod, Blaine catches up with actor, broadcaster and advocate Jameela Jamil to hear how a move to Los Angeles fuelled her drive to speak out on toxic body-shaming in the media and Celebrity endorsements of weight-loss products. 14 faixas 39:13

Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, legal systems around the world are beginning to witness the power of citizens, organizations, and businesses fighting legal battles to protect Earth. But who's side is the law on? This week we talk about how the tides have turned in favor of Earth in court with CEO of ClientEarth, James Thornton. We hear about how ClientEarth is mending the relationship between humanity and the Earth through the law, and James shares some amazing news from China regarding citizens being able to sue the Chinese government in environmental cases. Stick around for the amazing story of how €30 shut down a coal mine. And our special guest co-host this week is Dr. Tara Shine. Meeting your musical heroes isn’t something that happens everyday, and rarely are they as engaging or open-hearted as our incredible guests on this week’s episode of the Pod.Blaine sits down with one of his favourite guitarists, Ed O’Brien from the Oxford band Radiohead, to discuss feeling re-politicised for the first time since both attending the ‘Stop the War’ March in 2003, the social significance of Acid House, and ‘finding your tribe’ at Glastonbury. It’s a heart-warming conversation with many twists and turns. This week’s opening thought features the ‘Bard of Barking’ Billy Bragg ruminating on the power of music to change the world, recorded especially for TWFF. It is a true privilege to have the ‘punk poet laureate of protest’ on the show.Ed’s beautiful and hypnotic debut solo album ‘Earth’ is out now, as is Billy’s critically acclaimed new book ‘The three dimensions of freedom’, a pocket-sized exploration of personal liberty and the responsibilities of citizenship. George Floyd’s brutal murder at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis has ignited a global conversation about structural racism in America. But how does Britain compare today? And how far have we really come in reconciling our dark colonial past?Blaine sits down with author Nikesh Shukla, named by Time Magazine as ‘’one of the twelve leaders shaping the next generation of artists’’ to find out how ‘The Good Immigrant’ has helped change the face of publishing in the UK, and receives a surprise visit from a familiar face. This week’s opening thought features journalist and author Reni Eddo-Lodge reading from her No.1 bestseller ‘Why I’m no longer talking to white people about Race’, recorded especially for TWFF.At the end of this episode you will hear ‘Screwdriver’ from Mystery Jets’ critically-acclaimed new album ‘A Billion Heartbeats’. I get to speak with one of the finest songwriters in the world. The Mystery Jets have had some of the most infectious and emotive songs from a selection of albums that have crossed many different sounds and musical landscapes. Blaine takes me on a journey through the music and where the band came from to where they are now. It's a truly great two way chat that has always been the goal of this show and to finally speak with somebody i've sung along to for many years is a great honour. in short the guy rocks. Enjoy, and don't forget thier new album is out soon!! For my short film and comedy pilot visit right here: WWW.SOMEDAYSAREDIAMONDS.CO.UK

Mystery Jets are a three-piece indie band from London, who first made a name for themselves over a decade ago. Approaching their sixth studio album, lead singer Blaine Harrison found himself amidst the turmoil of post-Brexit London. While living around the corner from Trafalgar Square, Blaine weaved himself into the crowds of the EU rallies, the Extinction Rebellion, even far-right groups like Britain First and the National Defence League. The album birthed from this period, A Billion Heartbeats, navigates through all of the problems that both unite and separate us, reminding us that we all need to fight for compassion.
Blaine Harrison is the lead singer of indie band Mystery Jets. He sends us a diary today from the his apartment in Clerkenwell, where he is staying as a property guardian. Mystery Jets’ new album ‘A Billion Heartbeats’ was released on 3rd April, Blaine muses on what it means to release new music at a time when the band are unable to play gigs and in-store shows. He also tells us about the emptiness of central London, and how music, food, and drink have helped him get by during isolation. PLUS: car faults, roasting tin recipes, and an acoustic excerpt of some new music. ➤ Listen to more of Mystery Jets music here ➤ Follow Mystery Jets here: @MysteryJets ➤ Follow the Social Distancing Diaries playlist here, featuring music from all our guests If you want to discuss your own experiences and join the conversation, you can reach us on: Email: socialdistancingdiaries@gmail.com Twitter: @sddpod and use #sddpod Instagram: @socialdistancingdiariespod Facebook: facebook.com/socialdistancingdiaries --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sddpod/message

Blaine Harrison, lead singer of Mystery Jets, is also a ‘property guardian’, who lives and works in the capital’s empty commercial premises. For a while the entire floor of an office block on London’s Strand was his home. Each weekend he had a front-row seat as NHS marches, Brexit protests, Extinction Rebellion demos and Tommy Robinson rallies made their way past his window. In this thoughtful interview with Olly, he explains how what he saw on the streets inspired his songwriting.Mystery Jets’ new album, A Billion Heartbeats, is released April 3.---Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart considers how the current lockdown has prompted an unlikely rebirth for retro-gaming, VR, quiz apps and even ancient gaming platform Second Life. Second albums are a notoriously tricky obstacle for many musicians, but this week we celebrate the anniversary of the release of Nirvana's seminal second album 'Nevermind' by tipping our hats to acts made equally big steps forward with theirs. Hot Chip, Jamie T, Mystery Jets and Interpol are amongst the acts who receive shouts in what rapidly becomes an unabashed trip down memory lane for us. These are acts and albums we loved during our teenage years, and playing them again was a real joy for us. Hopefully hearing them will be for you too. Away from second albums, there's a first in our musical highlights section as we share one selection - the incredible new documentary 'The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years'. We were lucky enough to be invited to an advanced screening of the film and loved it so much that we couldn't possible pick separate highlights. It's that good. So sit back, relax and enjoy episode 26 of Tracks. We do not claim ownership of any of the music played in this episode. Shaun Attwood survived a 9½ year sentence in America's deadliest prison. He tells Olly Mann his sensational story, from Liverpool to Phoenix, from his initial career playing the stock market to the millions he earned trading ecstasy for the fledgling 90's rave scene in Arizona, in competition with the Mafia mass murderer Sammy the Bull Gravano. In The Zeitgeist this week, Ollie Peart looks forward to the trends of 2016 - from the release of Oculus Rift to the return of silent film - and, in The Foxhole, Alix Fox helps a gay gent who seeks a more reliable hard-on. Music comes courtesy of Mystery Jets - it's their new single Telomere, from their album Curve of the Earth - out Jan 15th on Caroline International. And... that's it for the current series of The Modern Mann. If you've enjoyed it, please do buy us a beer at modernmann.co.uk, leave us a review on iTunes - and we'll return in the Spring. Thanks to everyone who has supported the show so far. Presenter: Olly Mann. Contributors: Ollie Peart, Alix Fox. Producer: Matt Hill. Theme Music: 'Skies Over Cairo' by Django Django. Host David Kristopher Pasi mentions this conversation hits home because Earyummy moved to Los Angeles from Chicago after receiving threats from Chicago Police during the last mayoral election over leaked Independent Police Review Board documents being used in a case against former Detective Joseph Frugoli, a case which aims to prove internal investigations into accusations of police brutality were falsified. We will have an article about the case in the new Earyummy mobizine which will resume weekly publication in January of 2016.
