On today’s DiabetesPowerShow, Charlie Cherry, Chris Daniel, and Lori Cherry welcome Doris Hobbs. Doris Hobbs has a passion for the fashion from a very glamorous time in our history. She loves all things 1940’s and 50’s, especially the new Christian Dior styles from 1947. She brings back this glamour on her website, RichInLoveFashion.com capturing stunning images from the golden age of Hollywood. Doris is thriving with Type One Diabetes. At age 33, the first thing Doris realized after been diagnosed as a Type One Diabetic, was that she had two options: She could allow it to control her life, or find the unbinding courage from within the tragedy; She chose courage. The next few days were consumed with perplexed emotions, mostly of denial, pooled from the self-belief that she could be a rare case and mysteriously cured. She was given a new role and lifestyle as a Type One Diabetic. She immediately chose to not wear it as a sympathy garment; instead, she would rather re-fashion how others perceive such a life-altering disorder. Aside from a select group of family and friends that knew of her health struggles, she somehow managed, two days after the news was confirmed, to conduct an on-location photo-shoot for her website, Rich in Love Fashion. She knew, without a doubt, at that moment, she had a purpose on earth, and found herself more determined to not allow Diabetes to hinder her little girl dreams. We, as a society, have a tendency of suppressing our fears, as mastering those can be difficult, and takes large amounts of will and courage to look in the mirror and say, “I will succeed; I can do this!” The relationship between one’s journey of self-growth and courage tends to evoke feelings of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty, but allowing such emotions to take center stage is moral injustice. At birth, each and every one of us is embedded with a purpose or talent, which provides us the blueprints of our life’s story, which must be written and shared. “From all of my lessons and blessings in the last 2 1/2 years, I’ve formed an organic sense of how to live an authentic life that channels pure gratitude and glamour”. Since being diagnosed a Type One Diabetic, Doris has provided media exposure for organizations such as: Beyond Type 1, JDRF, American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Alive, and has been featured on 101.7 KKIQ, 92.1 KKDV, Diabetes Connections, and Diabetes Late Nite for her advocate efforts.
Doris Hobbs is all about style and glamour. A fashion writer, model and blogger, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult, as was her sister. Their father has lived with T1D since age 2. Doris talks about where her fashion sense comes from, why she loves vintage looks and clothing and how looking good is an important part of good health. Stacey also previews extreme athlete Roddy Riddle's "unfinished business." On March 10th Roddy will take his second crack at the 6633 Ultra, a grueling run that crosses the arctic circle.
Tonight we’re encouraging you to ‘LOVE YOURSELF, LOVE YOUR DIABETES HEALTH!’ with musical inspiration from George Michael. George Michael was one of the leading pop stars of the 1980s and '90s. His 1987 album 'Faith' won a Grammy for best album of the year. February has long been celebrated as a month of romance. When we think about love, we generally think in terms of who loves us and whom we love, both of which refer to others. But what if Valentine’s Day were really about falling in love with ourselves, cherishing ourselves, and honoring our health. So many of us are programmed to constantly be taking care of others. We say there isn’t enough time to concentrate on ourselves or we think that it would just be an unnecessary indulgence. However, the truth is making yourself and your diabetes health a priority in your life is much more than just a great way of life, it's also a smart way to avoid a diabetes health-related complication. We’re throwing our first-ever Divabetic Valentine’s Day Party! We’re sharing expert advice on food to nourish your heart, fashions to boost your spirit and fabulous diabetes self-care tips to make your life easier. Whether you’re married, single or dating, our goal is to encourage you to show how much you care about yourself and your diabetes health. Guests including Chef Ward Alper aka ‘The Decadent Diabetic, ‘Rich In Love’ style blogger, Vintage fashionista, model and diabetes advocate, Doris Hobbs, the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, Poet Lorraine Brooks and Laura Laria, MA, CASAC-T, Addiction Counselor and Developer of t'he Well Armed Diabetic'. Throughout the podcast we will be featuring music by George Michael courtesy of SONY Music. This podcast supports the 'Spare A Rose, Save A Child' campaign and is part of #DPodcastWeek.
