Since graduating from Durham University, Ed Gamble has become one of the UK's most successful stand-up comedians. He's been a Taskmaster champion, a Pointless host and one of the Hunted on Channel 4. And his “Off Menu” series with James Acaster is one of the most listened-to podcasts in the UK – where guests choose their ideal meal. But Ed's own love of food hasn't always been easy. He has Type One Diabetes...and has spoken, and written, movingly about his complicated relationship with eating and weight. In an interview a couple of years ago he said: I can't tell day-to- day whether I'm arrogant or I hate myself, but I think somewhere in-between is absolutely ideal for a comedian. Wise Divine Women - Libido - Menopause - Hormones- Oh My! The Unfiltered Truth for Christian Women
Emma Nicholls, the ‘Diabetic Duchess' is a certified Health Coach and Food Scientist on a mission to support diabetics on their journeys to improved health and wellness. Emma has lived with Type One Diabetes for over 44 years and knows that the ownership of her longevity and well-being sits firmly in her hands. In her early 50s, Emma was faced with the prospect of facing her latter years with chronic kidney disease and poor eyesight due to the damage caused by the condition in her youth. At that time, she was offered a simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant by her medical team. Something made her question this approach and challenge what might be possible. She started a period of frenzied research and ultimately decided not to progress with this form of treatment. Instead, she decided to quite simply ‘change her life' and to no longer be a "victim" of the condition but a believer that it was in fact, a blessing. She started to do several things to dramatically improve her diabetes control and to reverse some of her diabetes-related complications. Emma shares her personal story and insights into the world of diabetes and reclaiming health. This is her life purpose. Emma has a first degree in Food Science and Food Economics, an Executive MBA from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management and a Certificate in Health Coaching. As our bodies age, our cells are aging with us, and the messages they produce are decreasing. While growth factors have been used to take the message of youthful cells and use them to stimulate the skin, exosomes offer a more complete, natural, and protected version of those messages. Scientific researcher Dr. Jordan Plews, CEO and co-founder of ELEVAI Labs, joins Dr. Bass to discuss what's happening in the space of exosomes, stem cells, and regenerative medicine as a whole. Through experiments with stem cells, Dr. Plews and his colleagues discovered that the cells provided some benefit, but they weren't sticking around or fixing problems such as wounds. This led to the discovery of exosomes, nano-packages that the body uses to send signals to cells. When searching for the best exosomes to separate, Dr. Plews and his team found that by taking exosomes from age zero stem cells, they can safely be put back into the body to “remind it how to be young again.” Drawing on his two decades of research in the study of stem cells and regenerative medicine, Dr. Plews explains what exosomes are, how they were discovered, the potential they hold, and how we may be using them in medicine going forward. About Dr. Jordan Plews Dr. Jordan Plews is the co-founder and CEO of ELEVAI Labs, Inc. He has dedicated nearly 20 years to the study of stem cells and regenerative medicine. Following many years investigating the use of various types of stem cells on injury and degenerative diseases, he has gone on to build and lead teams, setting up stem cell culture labs and developing stem cell-based regenerative medicine solutions before pivoting into aesthetics. Meet Simone Carniglia, Six-Star finisher, and Guinness World Record holder as the fastest runner with Type One diabetes—with an amazing average time of 2:42:30 per race! Simone started his running journey to lose weight and was inspired by Stefano Baldini, the great Italian marathoner who won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Running these incredibly fast times is impressive, but for a diabetic, it is significantly more challenging. A diabetic marathoner has to continuously control blood sugar levels in order to be safe, not faint, and perform at their best. They're more subject to cramping and dehydration during physical activity, especially when glucose levels aren't managed properly. Simone has only been running for five years and is just getting started. He hopes his journey will inspire many other diabetic athletes to not give up on their dreams and never give up. Simone's story proves that with the right training, nutrition, therapy, strategy, and use of the latest technologies—such as Abbott Global and Freestyle Libre 3—diabetic runners can achieve amazing results that weren't imaginable just a few short years ago Simone is grateful for the Abbott Global profile they featured on him for World Diabetes Day and is excited to get started on a second round of World Marathon Majors. I'm rooting for Simone to keep inspiring and look forward to seeing him out there in 2024! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on.
