In trasferta negli States, Pupi Avati realizza uno dei suoi film meno citati che, pur non essendo un capolavoro, appare interessante per la messa in scena e per la narrazione, che offre tanti momenti ad alta tensione e uno stuolo di attori abbastanza convincenti. L'amico d'infanzia è un buon thriller, tutto sommato. Non brillerà forse per originalità della trama, ma il regista bolognese dimostra di saperci fare anche al di fuori dei propri confini geografici, dosando i colpi di scena e facendo ricorso ad una fotografia e una colonna sonora azzeccate, che ricordano l'identità italiana, ma affondano bene in suolo americano. Non mancano frecciatine al potere dei media ed al sensazionalismo della società del tempo, che è ancora più radicato oggi.
