Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) is a member of the Apiaceae family—otherwise known as the Carrot family. It's also known as Beaver Poison, Devil's Porridge, Herb Bennet, Poison Parsley, Water Parsley, and Spotted Hemlock. The plants can grow to 2.5m, and they're commonly found in the British countryside. The whole plant is toxic. According to Mrs Burke's Language of Flowers dictionary, hemlock meant 'You will be my death'. The plant appears in history, but how does it appear in folklore, if at all? David Rothkopf joins Joanna Coles to discuss Donald Trump's awkward World Cup appearance. A moment complete with loud boos and a bewildered walk across the championship stage, sparks a broader conversation about a president increasingly disconnected from reality at home and abroad. They examine Trump's rambling public appearances, the mounting toll of his foreign policy decisions, and why his critics argue his presidency is becoming defined by ego, chaos, and an alarming lack of empathy. David and Joanna delve into the growing influence of the “Manosphere” inside MAGA, the arrest of Andrew and Tristan Tate, the administration's controversial priorities, and what they reveal about the culture surrounding Trump. From E. Jean Carroll collecting her judgment to fears over election integrity, international legal exposure, and the expanding web of political corruption, they connect the week's biggest stories into a sobering portrait of an administration consumed by loyalty, image, and self-preservation—and explain why the consequences of today's headlines may be felt long after Trump's presidency comes to an end. I have the prettiest dress here in a twelve. Why don't you try it on?(Text3)W: Do you think you can take care of everything in the office today?M: No problem. Just go home and take a rest. If there is anything I feel I cannot handle, I'll call you.(Text4)W: We have a half-day tour, a full-day tour and an evening tour. Which one would you like?M: What is the schedule of the half-day tour?W: It sets out at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 2:00 p.m.(Text5)M: Now,what seems to be the trouble, Mrs. Stevens?W: I've been very dizzy lately. And last night, I had some chest pain.M: Don't worry. Let me have a look.(Text6)W: Wow.That was a great match. I really like watching tennis games.M: Me too. I think tennis is an exciting sport.W: I think so. Do you play tennis, John?M:Yes, but not very well. Do you play?W: A little. How about a game on Tuesday afternoon?M:Sure.(Text7)M: Mrs.White, I'm afraid we have to put you on a strict diet. From now on, you're going to have to stay away from salty food.W:Does that mean I can't have any more fast food?M:Right. You can't have any fried food or steaks.W:What about breakfast food like eggs and sausages?M:Those are all bad for you. But you can have porridge, bread and orange juice.W:Well, what about lunch and dinner?M:Have a salad for lunch. As for dinner, you can have all the vegetables you want. Fish and chicken are also okay.W:What about dessert? Can I still have ice cream?M:Yes, but not too much.(Text8)M: Hi Nancy! You look worried. What's wrong?W:Well Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage?M:Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago? I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.W: That's how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week.M: I didn't know you made it to the finals.W: I'm worried I'll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don't know what to do.M:Nancy, I know that you're not going to forget how to spell your name. I'll help you get through this. I'll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I'll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works.W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.(Text9)W:Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone.M: To begin with, I'd like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one's health, but the loss of identity and self-worth.W:Yes, it's true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age?M:Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care, and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today, I'd like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles that elderly can play and should play in our society. (Text10)Talking about personal relationships, well, I'd naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I'm confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all.Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I'll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love.

Fletch Gets Out. Getting Back In Is the Tricky Bit. For its landmark 200th episode, Reel Britannia is heading behind bars for Porridge – The Movie, the 1979 big-screen outing for one of Britain's best-loved television comedies. Ronnie Barker returns as the wily Norman Stanley Fletcher, still doing his best to serve his sentence with the minimum possible effort. Alongside him is Richard Beckinsale as the good-natured Lennie Godber, while Fulton Mackay's fearsome Mr Mackay and Brian Wilde's endlessly flustered Mr Barrowclough attempt to maintain something vaguely resembling order at Slade Prison. Peter Vaughan also appears as the quietly terrifying Harry "Grouty" Grout. When Fletcher is persuaded to help organise a football match between the prisoners and a celebrity team, he naturally suspects that something is amiss. Before long, he and Godber are caught up in an escape plan that leaves them facing an unusual problem: not how to get out of prison, but how to get back in before anyone notices. Directed by Dick Clement and written by Clement with Ian La Frenais, the film retains the warmth, sharp dialogue and beautifully observed characters of the original series. It is also one of those rare British sitcom spin-offs that feels like a proper film rather than an extended episode with a slightly larger catering budget. Join the Reel Britannia team as they celebrate episode 200 in their familiar warm, conversational and lightly irreverent style.   This episode and the complete Reel Britannia back catalogue are available wherever you download your podcasts and at: https://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/reelbritannia   Follow the podcast on X at @rbritanniapod. From an impoverished neighbourhood in South London, Charlie Chaplin became one of the most significant figures in the development of cinema. More recently, TV writers like Sophie Willan and Michaela Coel have transformed the way working class lives are depicted on TV, from the concerned paternalism of the 1960s to a more celebratory view from the inside in the 2020s. In this week's edition of Radio 4's arts and ideas discussion programme, Matthew Sweet charts these changes, and considers what they mean for our understanding of class categories in wider society. With TV historian Laura Minor, art historian Jacqueline Riding, novelist Adelle Stripe, and historian Samuel Johnson-Schlee. Plus, an interview with Ian La Frenais, co-creator of such comedy classics as The Likely Lads and Porridge. The paperback of Adelle Stripe's memoir Base Notes, and Jacqueline Riding's book Hard Street: Working Class Lives in Charlie Chaplin's London, are both published in February. Producer: Luke Mulhall

I recorded a long on-the-move video and audio segment while running and walking through Mount Douglas Park the day after the salmon toss, narrating what I saw along Douglas Creek as it ran high from recent rain. I talked through my process of keeping audio and video synchronized, filming incidentals, and planning how the footage would become both a trailer and a longer podcast episode. Along the way I reflected on wet feet, muddy trails, fake bridges, zone-based heart rate alerts from my running app, and the challenge of staying upright on slick rock. I passed familiar landmarks like the hiker's bridge, Elephant Rock, and the saddle, mixing trail observations with side thoughts about money, technology, past injuries, and even low-flying floatplanes. I nearly tripped while chatting on trail but stayed vertical, finished the climb, and signed off contentedly from a soggy but memorable run the day after the salmon toss.

There's a shift that happens every year, somewhere between the clocks going back and the first frost. It's not sudden. It creeps in quietly. I catch myself sighing more often. Feeling a little heavier. My motivation goes a bit hazy, and everything, even the small stuff, starts to feel like a climb. I used to treat it like a glitch. Like something to push through or fix. But I've learned over the years that this isn't failure. It's winter arriving.Winter gets a bad rap. And yes, it's hard. Especially if you're juggling a lot; kids, home education, work, meals, housework, your own mental health. But it doesn't have to feel like complete survival mode. You don't have to hustle your way through it. What I've found is that the season gets easier when I stop fighting it and start working with it. I've learned to let winter be what it is, slower, quieter, darker, and shift the way I move through it accordingly. Why Rhythm Helps More Than RoutineThere's a lot of pressure in winter to “stay on track,” whatever that means. But personally? I don't respond well to rigid routines this time of year. They feel brittle. Unforgiving. What I need, what my family needs, is rhythm. Gentle anchors to hold onto when the days start to blur together. For me, that means slow, intentional starts to the day. I light a candle in the kitchen before the kettle's even boiled. I keep the fairy lights up well past December because the extra light helps more than I can explain. We make time for a walk most afternoons, even if it's a soggy loop around the block. And I try to get dinner started before the sky goes black at 4 p.m. These aren't strict rules. They're soft points of focus… things I return to that help me feel like I'm still rooted, even when my energy dips.Letting Go of Summer EnergyOne of the biggest shifts I've made is learning to stop expecting summer-level energy in winter. Because it's just not realistic; not for me, not for my kids, not for our life. Motivation in winter isn't the same buzzing, bright momentum. It's quieter. Slower. And it disappears entirely some days. I used to panic about that. I used to push harder. Now I pause.Winter is the season of compost. Of dormancy. Of everything underneath the surface doing quiet work. Trees drop their leaves. Seeds go still. Nothing blooms, but it doesn't mean nothing's happening. We don't need to constantly produce to prove we're growing. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is rest and tend to what's already here.Scaling Back to What Really MattersIt's easy to feel behind in winter, like you should be “doing more” because others are. But I've learned that winter is when I need to protect my energy most. I don't try to keep up. I cut back. I give myself permission to simplify everything. Home education slows down. Our meals become less experimental, more familiar. Our calendar empties out a bit. We focus on what's essential and let the rest wait. And when I say we slow down, I don't mean we stop living. I just mean we don't try to stretch beyond what we have to give. We aim for depth, not breadth. We give ourselves grace. That's the rhythm that gets us through.Nature Is Still There - Even in the GreyThe hardest part of winter, sometimes, is feeling stuck inside. But getting outside, even for ten minutes, always helps. Always. I never want to go. And I never regret it. Even just standing on the balcony with a cup of tea or walking the dog down the same road I've walked all year... it shifts something.Nature's quieter in winter, but it's not gone. The bare trees, the cold air, the stubborn little birds that still show up, they remind me that stillness isn't emptiness. It's rest. It's recalibration.Food as Grounding, Not Just FuelThe other thing that holds me together in winter? Food. And not in a performative, Instagrammable way. Just simple, warm, seasonal food that grounds me in the present moment.Porridge. Thick soups. Crumbles. Casseroles. Roasted roots. Meals that warm the kitchen and make the whole flat smell like care. This isn't just about nourishment. It's about rhythm. About comfort. About whispering to my nervous system, “You're okay. You're safe. You're held.”Little Joys Are Not OptionalI've stopped waiting for the “big” joy. Winter doesn't hand it out easily. So I look for the small stuff and I let that be enough. These things matter. They're not silly. They're survival. If you feel slower, heavier, less focused… that doesn't mean you're failing. It means your body is responding to the season. You're not lazy. You're not broken. You're just wintering. And wintering doesn't mean giving up. It means adapting. It means listening. It means doing what matters and letting that be enough. You don't need to be full of energy. You don't need to stay “productive.” You just need to stay rooted. This Is the Season to Loosen Your GripYou don't have to thrive in winter. You just have to keep going; gently, slowly, at your own pace. That is more than enough. And here's the truth I come back to again and again: even here, in the dark, you're still growing. It just looks different.Let it.
