Openers: Mark: Space Empires 4X Jonathan: 2005 Flashback & Quiz Closers: Jonathan: My top games of 2005 Mark: Hosting my own (small) event instead of traveling to a con? Mark Johnson @MarkEJohnson Jonathan Takagi @jtakagi The Wayback Machine is back. One more time, a friend joins me to go back in time to an earlier Spiel des Jahres, looking at the winner but also the other nominees and recommended games. In addition, my guest helps me think about the earlier time itself, and how the games, the hobby, and the community may have changed over the years. This time it's my longtime friend & listener from San Diego, Jonathan Takagi. In fact, he's from a bit north, in Escondido, and Jonathan is another one of the people behind my favorite regional con, EsCon. I'll be going back there in a month! Jonathan decided to pick 2005 because it's twenty years ago...which also happens to be when I started the podcast. Niagara was the game that won the SdJ (one of my earliest disappointments with the jury's selection!), and I replayed it just recently to re-examine my opinion about the game. In fact, it can be played online at BGA, which seems odd for a game that relies on its physicality and "toy factor" as much as it does. Still, the actual strategy in the game remains intact in the format, since the unpredictability of the fork in the river may not be so unpredictable after all. What do you think of Niagara? We don't just talk about the winner, though. Back in those days, the SdJ jury announced four other "nominated" games that could've won the award, and several more "recommended" games. For me, I think the game I'd want as the winner resides in the nominated list, while Jonathan singles out some standouts from the recommended list. Other titles nominated for the SdJ: Verflixxt! (That's Life), Around the World in 80 Days, Jambo, and Himalaya (Lords of Xidit) Other titles recommended by the SdJ jury: Boomtown, Tanz der Hornochsen (Dance of Ibexes), The Gardens of the Alhambra, Diamant (Incan Gold), Geschenkt! (No Thanks), Piranha Pedro, Typo, and Wie ich die Welt sehe… We also talk about two other major German game awards, the Deutscher Spielpreis, and the A La Carte. They are both ranked list. The former is (sort of) for heavier, gamer-games, while the latter is for card games (or “board”games done with cards). The timing of these awards is slightly off from the SdJ, so depending on publication dates a game might show up in one year's list for one award, and the following year for another award. But they're all close, and with some notable overlap for widely-respected games. DSP 1. Louis XIV 2. Niagara 3. Manila 4. Ubongo 5. Himalaya 6. Around the World in 80 Days 7. Shadows Over Camelot 8. Jambo 9. The Scepter of Zavandor 10. Verflixxt! A La Carte 1. Jambo 2. Geschenkt! 3. Wie ich die Welt sehe… 4. Diamant 5. Boomtown 6. Razzia! 7. Team Work 8. Gelb Gewinnt! Near the end of the episode, Jonathan considers what we can now observe in the hobby when we look back on 2005. Was it the start of a transition from “German Games” to the broader notion of “Euros”? Of course we had some French, Italian, British, and even American titles back then, but they're hobby still showed its tremendous roots in German culture and its game publishing. At some point, that changed. Was this around the start of that change? -Mark
There's only a few games to talk about so how come Steve and Ewen have turned this into a 90 minute podcast I hear you cry…Well, as they don an Aberdeen top and Falkirk t-shirt, the guys discuss restaurant walk outs, the smell of peaches, would they score a goal for Celtic and Ewen in a strange version of Rosie and Jim.Of course, we also have Winner Takes It All and a review of the boys pre-season predictions. And it's a special end of season Big Scottish Football QuizIt's The Big Scottish Football Podcast!SOCIALS:✖ TWITTER | @bigfootballscot

Welcome to Diaspora, the show where we share the remarkable stories of immigrants from the Indian subcontinent. In this episode of Diasporaa, host Aditya Mehta sits down with Sam Bhatnagar, an entrepreneur from Vancouver, BC, originally from Chandigarh, India, who shares his remarkable immigration journey. Sam recounts his early life spent in Kenya, transitioning to Canada in 2005, and the challenges and triumphs along the way. He discusses the importance of adapting to a new culture while staying rooted in one's heritage, and his family's successful venture into the financial advisory business. The conversation explores the dynamics of the Indian community in East Africa, the process of immigration to Canada, and insightful advice for new immigrants. The episode also touches on Sam's personal life, including his experience with the Canadian health system during his son's birth and the importance of maintaining a work-life balance in a family-run business. 00:00 Introduction to Diasporaa 00:21 Meet Sam Bhatnagar: From Chandigarh to Vancouver 02:20 Life in Kenya: A Journey of 17 Years 03:54 The Indian Community in East Africa 09:02 Moving to Canada: A Family Decision 12:21 Settling in Canada: First Impressions and Challenges 13:58 Starting Over: New Jobs and New Beginnings 17:04 Building a Financial Advisory Business 22:47 Advice for New Immigrants 25:31 Overcoming Negative Experiences 26:21 The Importance of Reaching Out 29:25 Balancing Cultural Exposure 32:04 Managing Family Business Dynamics 36:42 Navigating Parenthood and Healthcare 41:51 Building Connections and Abundance Mindset 47:36 Funny Cultural Mix-Ups 49:31 Nostalgic Sounds and Smells 51:11 Conclusion and Farewell List of Resources: Chandigarh: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandigarh Greater Vancouver Board of Trade: https://boardoftrade.com/ Gujaratis in East Africa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gujarati_people#East_Africa Lake Victoria: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Victoria Best Cities for Quality of Life Rankings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_quality_of_life_indices About the Podcast: Diasporaa was the name of Aditya's startup based in Vancouver, BC. It focused on helping new immigrants in Canada find their feet, get off to a running start and ease their assimilation into Canadian life. A big part of the platform were conversations, community and support. Though the startup stopped growing once Aditya moved to Seattle, WA - it remained alive in the form of several discussion groups and online communities. Now, Diasporaa has been resurrected in the form of a podcast focused on sharing interesting immigrant stories from the South Asian diaspora and uncovering how much we have in common despite our differences. It is available on YouTube, all major podcast platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, etc. and is also broadcast as a radio show on Alternative Talk 1150 AM and 98.9 FM HD Channel 3 on Wednesdays from 2-3pm PST. About Aditya Mehta: Aditya is a Bombay boy who has lived in Austin, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Vancouver before making it to his current home in Seattle. He has degrees in marketing, urban planning, real estate and strategy but has spent his career in financial services, social media and now real estate - mostly as an entrepreneur and partly as an employee at Amazon. He balances Indian, Canadian and American culture, loves helping those who are new to North America and looks forward to the interesting stories that his interview guests bring each week. When not podcasting, he is helping his wife Prachi build her pharmaceutical business or hanging out with his son Arjun. Tonight's Jazz Feature is by one of trumpet master and Jazz pioneer John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie's finest groups. It's both fun and serious and an off the wall tribute to some music from the Caribbean, hence the title: Jambo Caribe. The music is by Dizzy's long standing Quintet with James Moody on tenor saxophone and flute, Kenny Barron on piano, Christopher White on bass and vocal, Rudy Collins on drums and added on some tunes Kansas Fields on percussion and surdo drum. Dizzy of course on trumpet and some vocals. The selections include some calypso flavored tunes that are fun and serious at the same time and some straight up Jazz. This album was recorded in November of 1964 in Chicago and although it's a lesser known album from Dizzy's vast output it demonstrates Dizzy's always serious approach to music and his love of entertaining people with style and humor. Enjoy Jambo Caribe, tonight's Jazz Feature.

In this episode I share my thoughts on creating your support network. When we're in crisis—whether it's divorce, grief, anxiety, or panic—it can feel like we're completely on our own, with no one to turn to. In those moments, our brains convince us that we're isolated, without a friend in the world. But the reality is, we aren't. That's why it's so important to build our support network before crisis hits. There's so much more on this topic (because it's SO IMPORTANT) in my book, How to Divorce Sober. If you need more encouragement and permission to build your team, head there! I also talk about my not-so-secret love of online courses and how they've become an essential part of my support system: When I'm too triggered to watch TV, I do a little workshop. When I'm not sure what to do next, I dip into an online course. When I need to breathe, I follow something from my yoga teacher's online library. When I need to shift my energy and get out of a funk… you get it. I do an online course. I also go for walks and chat with friends, but there's something so comforting and familiar about learning from these people I've grown to love. In this podcast, I talk about: Claire Venus Creative mentor and all-round babe. She was on ep 43 (love and slow living) and 58 (back to school) and you can find her treasure trove of online goodies at Creatively Conscious and Sparkle on Substack Kat River - Art of Alchemy. Mother-centric business and life course that was truly transformational for me last. So many ah-ha moments, it helped to get through my book publishing fears and I loved doing it with my pal, Claire. We'd send each other long voice notes about what came up for us. Super bonding! I've never seen motherhood and business being spoken about at all, never mind in such an insightful and practical way. Just magic! The live round starts again on 27th Feb 2025 so have a look now so you don't miss it: Art of Alchemy. Use the code AOAFRIENDS for a 10% discount. Leonie Dawson Incredible teacher who's been around forever so I'm sure you already know her! But boy do I love her. Such wise, brave, sensible, encouraging, get-your-head-out-your-own-butt tough love. Just what we all need from time to time! The first course I did: Money manifesting and multiple streams of income She's done hundreds of courses so now I'm in her Biz & Life Academy as you get everything for a fraction of the cost. Jambo Dragon Yoga with intention, online courses for the soul, magic that works... I've been subscribed to Jambo's online world for about 5 years now and couldn't live without him. I tried. Those months were rough.

Call to order today: (850) 458-8782 and ask for Kevin! Mention The BBQ Central Show for 10% off your entire order!!___________________________________________Taking you back to 8/11/2009 - Being featured this week…is in my estimation…a BBQ legend in her own right…Candy Weaver. I came to know Candy first from her running the BBQ side of the wood pellet company “BBQ'rs Delight” but since came to know her as a competitive BBQ cook, eventually the President of the KCBS board…and a lady who has owned every pellet cooker known to mankind…has also retrofitted non-pellet cookers into pellet cookers…her most infamous job in doing that was converting a Jambo into a pellet cooker. In this show, which might have been the first time I had her on the show…we learn about how she got into the wood pellet business and how a chance meeting with another legend in BBQ, John Willingham…creator of the WHAM cooker…launched her into wood pellet sales for cookers…by the way…just another tie in to John Willingham…anyway…if you don't know Candy…this is a great introduction to her…and if you haven't tried BBQ'rs Delight pellets…you should check them out…they have quite a selection of flavors!Ready to make a “BEST OF” show all your own?? We're popping open a bottle of Mirto from Sardinia in celebration of our 50TH EPISODE! First, Dean caps off our prior episode about music and dance with the happiest song he's ever heard, Jambo Bwana, from East Africa, and with an Italian version of the card game Spoons in which the losing player sings an aria. From there, Dean and Tom explore divisions between the north and south of Italy, the cultural prominence of “la bella figura” across Italy, and the intersection of transactions and personal relationships throughout Italy as well. Lastly, our friends at Licensing check in on all of the celebratory singing going on (and perhaps to enjoy some Mirto too?). Thanks very much for laughing and learning with us over these 50 episodes! Ciao bella, until next time! ***Subscribe to Dean's Substack here for all of Dean's CultureQuizzes, “Culture's Consequences” articles, and much much more!*** Have a cultural question or episode idea? It's the first week of July here in the U.S. so lots of people are firing up their barbeque grills, putting watermelons on ice, and arranging lawn chairs in the grass to get ready to watch fireworks shows because for whatever reason, pyrotechnics are an integral part of North American culture when it comes to celebrating our country's Independence Day on July Fourth! And while I thoroughly enjoy pyro and brisket, all of this nationalistic hullabaloo re: civil and political freedom got me to thinking about the infinitely superior freedom available to Christ followers the world over. Because regardless of your nationality – by the way, we're wildly grateful that the porch has become an inclusive, pan-national place where God's image bearers gather from all over the world. Our boss here at Access More recently showed Alli, Dr. Howard and me some listener data and we were thrilled to see how many Back Porchers we now have who listen from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and South America – Good Day, mates – Jambo friends – Buenos Dias, brothers and sisters. Thank you so much for hanging out with us and putting up with the fact that sometimes we communicate from a myopic American, First World, vantage point. We're joyfully discombobulated that our Creator Redeemer has gathered people from around the globe to be part of this faith community and our huge hope and fervent prayer is that everyone feels a deep sense of belonging on the porch. Now back to the point of today's conversation, it's going to be all about the life-giving and galvanizing truism of freedom found woven throughout this divine love story we call the Bible. We're going to attempt to answer the question – what did Paul really mean when he proclaimed to the Galatians that it was for FREEDOM that Jesus came to set us free. Today's conversation is kind of like a cool breeze on a day that's so hot, your thighs are sticking to the car seat, so please grab a tall glass of sweet tea, iced coffee, yak milk – or whatever beverage strikes your summer fancy – and your Bible – unless you're too busy filling up old Coke bottles with bottle rockets, of course - and come prop your feet up on the porch with us…we're really glad you're here.Click here to get a 25% discount on the Dwell Bible App.Join the free Hidden Online Bible Study here

The 6th annual KCBS World Invitational was held over Memorial Day Weekend in Lebanon, Tenn., and on Episode 262 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast we talk it over with both of the big winners. Drew Davis of Razorracks BBQ out of Pleasant Plains, Ark., has won 28 KCBS Grand Championships during his career. But Drew and wife Chelsey picked up their biggest title when Razorracks scored a 708.548 to top the 81-team World Invitational. Razorracks also was a solid third in the Open the day before and Drew discusses the weekend, what it's like being a “canopy cooker” dealing with the elements and how he chooses whether to use his Jambo or Gateway Drum Smokers (he wins on both) on a given weekend. We also talk it over with the Grand Champion from the World Open, Brad Cox of Local Yokels BBQ from Crossville, Ill. Like Razorracks, Local Yokels is a family team with Brad's wife, Jocelyn, and their two daughters. Local Yokels had a near-flawless cook, scoring 709.72 to lead a 118-team field in the Open. It was the seventh GC in just 65 career KCBS comps and Brad gives a rundown of how they got started in competition BBQ and some keys to his success. Co-host Steve Koehler kicks off the show with a review a recent trip he and wife Donna took to Texas, where they made a tour of some popular BBQ joints - including the world-famous Franklin's in Austin. Steve said it did not disappoint. Today's story is found in the book of Genesis 11:1-9. All about the greatest tower in the world back in bible times: The tower of Babel. Jambo! Bonjour! Konnichiwa! We're saying hello in different languages. What language do you speak? If you're listening to this story, you are hearing it in English. Some of you can speak other languages, like Mandarin, or Spanish, or maybe even Arabic! Well, this story is about a group of people who could all speak only one language—but it wasn't a good thing! Let's find out why… After the big flood that covered the whole earth, God told everyone on board to spread out all over the world. The animals got off the ark and went to find new homes, in the mountains, the lakes, the forests and the deserts. Noah and his family got off the ark too, and as the years went by, the family grew and grew until there were lots of people living on the earth once again. But they didn't adventure across the earth. They all stayed together. This wasn't what God had told them to do. One day, this big group of people decided to find a new home. They moved all their things into a big desert area, and made lots of bricks to use for homes. But then, someone had an idea. “Hey, everyone!” said a person. “Why don't we build a city with a tower?” The people liked this.....
