Psychotherapist Dr. Harriet Fraad is joined by activist physician William Bronston MD to discuss his astonishing book 'Public Hostage Public Ransom: Ending Institutional America': "Public Hostage should make you outraged. The mistreatment of disabled people in Willowbrook and the mistreatment today of disabled people living in institutions must be understood and together we must fight to provide people the supports they need to live their lives integrated in our communities with dignity and respect. We as a society are responsible for these atrocities if we remain silent..." "William gives readers an in-depth look at how and why places like Willowbrook existed in the first place, and how financial incentives, hard-wired into the way health care is delivered in this country, encourage institutionalization of one form or another at the expense of more humane, more effective, and more cost effective home based health care. The result has been the continual use of for profit nursing homes and “assistive living centers” to which millions of elders and people with disabilities remain consigned..." "His book delivers a timely, well-written and meticulously documented argument that radical change is needed. His book is a must read for anyone interested in disability rights, elder rights and health care reform." Ellen Marie Wiseman is drawn to the dark corners of history, where rumors and mystery shroud the truth. It's where she finds and develops characters who shine. Listen as she shares how her own history led her to write about hidden truths and social injustices. We're talking about her new novel, The Lost Girls of Willowbrook, which is set in a real state run institution exposed back in 1972 for its atrocious abuses. Ellen opens the novel with quotes from a real doctor who was there in 1972. Dr. William Bronston's physician activism helped bring an end to the institution. He is joining Ellen for some of her book launch events. You'll hear him describe how Ellen's storytelling takes him back in time, and you'll listen to a few minutes from the chapter of the audiobook that Dr. Bronston says affected him most profoundly. Join us as we tackle The Lost Girls of Willowbrook, Ellen Marie Wiseman's powerful, heartbreaking, and complex novel about young people institutionalized in a New York “school” that was anything but. Senator Robert Kennedy once called Willowbrook a “snake pit.” Ellen talks about how children were essentially warehoused for years in this understaffed, overcrowded, filthy, and corrupt facility. Urban legends swirled around this place - especially about some of the (possibly murderous) staff members. We talk about the historical treatment of people with special needs or mental health issues, and what we've learned over the decades. Are we doing better? How do we stand up to injustice? The underlying facts about Willowbrook were first brought to light when Geraldo Rivera did an expose in 1972 - and it STILL took more than fourteen years for this facility to be shut down. Why didn't anyone go to jail? We talk about justice - and hope.
Tess and Karen loved talking to Ellen Marie Wiseman, a New York Times bestselling author of six highly acclaimed historical fiction novels. The interview covers her start as an imaginative child and concludes with a discussion of her fascinating book, The Lost Girls of Willowbrook, a novel described as a blend of fact, fiction, and urban legend. She also reveals how she chooses names for her characters and the temptation of going down the rabbit hole of research. She believes in crafting stories that cover past social injustices not widely known and creating characters that illustrate the resiliency of the human spirit. Writers and readers alike will enjoy this fascinating conversation. Novel Ideas will be discussing the book What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman. DBC 06250 Below is the synopsis from Bookshare. Ten years ago, Izzy Stone's mother fatally shot her father while he slept. Devastated by her mother's apparent insanity, Izzy, now seventeen, refuses to visit her in prison. But her new foster parents, employees at the local museum, have enlisted Izzy's help in cataloging items at a long-shuttered state asylum. There, amid piles of abandoned belongings, Izzy discovers a stack of unopened letters, a decades-old journal, and a window into her own past. Clara Cartwright, eighteen years old in 1929, is caught between her overbearing parents and her love for an Italian immigrant. Furious when she rejects an arranged marriage, Clara's father sends her to a genteel home for nervous invalids. But when his fortune is lost in the stock market crash, he can no longer afford her care—and Clara is committed to the public asylum. Even as Izzy deals with the challenges of yet another new beginning, Clara's story keeps drawing her into the past. If Clara was never really mentally ill, could something else explain her own mother's violent act? Piecing together Clara's fate compels Izzy to re-examine her own choices—with shocking and unexpected results. Illuminating and provocative, What She Left Behind is a masterful novel about the yearning to belong—and the mysteries that can belie even the most ordinary life. September 21, 2020 - The Great War is over, but the Spanish Influenza continues to deliver the butcher's bill. Everywhere, children are dying. But in Philadelphia, they're also disappearing -- and they all have one thing in common: They're immigrants. We dive into a riveting novel set 100 years ago that's eerily familiar today with acclaimed novelist Ellen Marie Wiseman. She brings us The Orphan Collector, a Target Book Club Pick and an Editor’s Choice in Historical Novel Society magazine. Her 13-year-old heroine, Pia, and her mother care for twins, Ollie and Max, even as prejudice and the Purple Death beset them on all sides. Like so many German immigrants, her patriotism was immediately suspect, and her father -- feeling the need to prove his loyalty -- did so by enlisting to fight the Kaiser. With Armistice Day, they dare to hope for a return to normalcy. But when Pia leaves quarantine at home in a desperate search for food, she can't imagine that she'll return to find her brothers have evaporated into thin air. Ellen Marie Wiseman's previous novels include best-sellers The Life She Was Given: A Moving and Emotional Saga of Family and Resilient Women, and, What She Left Behind: A Haunting and Heartbreaking Story of 1920s Historical Fiction -- which sold over half a million copies -- and The Plum Tree: An Emotional and Heartbreaking Novel of WW2 Germany and the Holocaust. Visit EllenMarieWiseman.com for more on her fictional adventures, and follow her at Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In chapters 9-12, we learn a LOT about Shannon except about how she found out about Izzy's mom (rifling through hours of microfiche??).
