Send us a textIn this episode, I chat with book publicist Megan Beatie about book publicity in a revealing conversation about the art and science of literary promotion.Drawing on over 25 years of experience working with authors ranging from Linda Ronstadt to Tess Gerritsen, Megan shares how the publishing landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation since she began her career. She explains the crucial difference between publicity (earned media) and marketing (paid media), and why authors need to understand both to succeed in today's competitive marketplace."I'm only as good as what I'm representing," Megan explains, revealing why passion for the books she promotes has been fundamental to her success. This philosophy has served her well, helping numerous clients achieve bestseller status and prestigious awards, including Danielle Trussoni's recent LA Times Book Prize for Best Mystery Thriller, The Puzzle Master. For debut authors feeling overwhelmed by marketing expectations, Megan offers practical wisdom: start early (ideally a year before publication), maintain an updated website as your "ground zero," choose social media platforms that match your personality rather than trying to be everywhere, and recognize when to seek professional help instead of attempting DIY publicity.Beyond tactics, our conversation delves into the deeper value of cultivating genuine relationships with booksellers, fellow authors, and readers. Megan challenges the common "is it worth it?" mindset about events and appearances, encouraging authors to see the long-term value in the connections they make. "If you go to a festival and don't sell a single book but you're on a panel with a better-known author who might give you a blurb for your next book, you just never know."Whether you're a published author looking to elevate your publicity game, an aspiring writer curious about the business side of publishing, or simply a book lover interested in how your favorite titles find their way to you, this episode offers valuable insights into the evolving art of connecting books with readers in meaningful ways.Megan Beatie CommunicationsThe Puzzle Master, Danielle TrussoniThe Puzzle Box, Danielle TrussoniThe Martha's Vineyard Beach and Book Club, Martha Hall KellyThe View From Lake Como, Adriana TrigianiVianne, Joanne HarrisThe Lion Women of Tehran, Marjan KamaliJoin or Die documentarySupport the showThe Bookshop PodcastMandy Jackson-BeverlySocial Media Links

This week, I talk with Danielle Trussoni about her new installment in The Puzzle Series, The Puzzle Box! We dive into how she created this genre-mashup of a series, what piqued her interest in puzzles, and the puzzle masters she works with for her books. The Puzzle Box SynopsisIt is the Year of the Wood Dragon, and the ingenious Mike Brink has been invited to Tokyo, Japan, to open the legendary Dragon Box.The box was constructed during one of Japan's most tumultuous periods, when the samurai class was disbanded and the shogun lost power. In this moment of crisis, Emperor Meiji locked a priceless Imperial secret in the Dragon Box. Only two people knew how to open the box—Meiji and the box's sadistic constructor—and both died without telling a soul what was inside or how to open it.Every twelve years since then, in the Year of the Dragon, the Imperial family holds a clandestine contest to open the box. It is devilishly difficult, filled with tricks, booby traps, poisons, and mind-bending twists. Every puzzle master who has attempted to open it has died in the process. But Brink is not just any puzzle master. He may be the only person alive who can crack it. His determination is matched only by that of two sisters, descendants of an illustrious samurai clan, who will stop at nothing to claim the treasure.Brink's quest launches him on a breakneck adventure across Japan, from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to the pristine forests of Hakone to an ancient cave in Kyushu. In the process, he discovers the power of Meiji's hidden treasure, and—more crucially—the true nature of his extraordinary talent.

Jake and Ron are honored and thrilled to have author Catriona Ward on the podcast! Her latest novel is Looking Glass Sound published by Tor Nightfire.https://tornightfire.com/catalog/looking-glass-sound-catriona-ward/https://us.macmillan.com/author/catrionawardI recently caught Catriona Ward at the Brookline Booksmith in Massachusetts, where she sat on a panel with former Wrath of the iOtians guest Christopher Golden and the inimitable Gretchen Felker-Martin, author of Manhunt. And it's obvious that Catriona's fan base is large and adoring, and rightly so. She has a generosity of spirit that's immediately palpable. Look no further than her willingness to talk with us in the midst of an exhausting cross country book tour. Catriona's work is influenced by her globetrotting youth. She was born in Washington, D. C., but grew up, well, all over, with stops in Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, England, and Morocco. Catriona earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Oxford, and a Master's in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. In 2015, she brought her experience, education, and energy to bear on Rawblood. Published as The Girl from Rawblood in the U. S. in 2016, the book signaled the arrival of a major new talent in horror fiction and won an August Derleth Award at the British Fantasy Awards to boot. Catriona followed up in 2019 with Little Eve, which also won a Derleth and a Shirley Jackson Award. In 2022, Catriona blew readers, critics, and no less an authority than Stephen King himself away with The Last House on Needless Street, a mind bender of a novel that I hope every iOtian listener has already enjoyed. The book won an amazing third Derleth Award for Catriona. And was also shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, the British Book Award, and a Red Tentacle Kitschie, which, for those not in the know, is a juried prize awarded for elevating the tone of genre literature. 2023 brought us Sundial, which was nominated for the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. Of its author, Danielle Trussoni of the New York Times remarked, “Ward is willing to go places so dark, so dismal, that it borders on sadism.” In our line of work, that's high praise. Elevated horror indeed. Catriona combines elements of the psychological thriller, the gothic, and a hallucinatory high strangeness to create a voice that is uniquely hers. No one else could have written Looking Glass Sound, her other 2023 release with Tor Nightfire. Which I might add continues to publish the best of the best of contemporary horror. Catriona spoke with us about this book from a hotel room in the Twilight Zone, en route to her next speaking gig. This week Danielle Trussoni arrives at Talking Scared in a rush. She has a meeting to get to, and we have LOTS of things to talk about in less than an hour. Her new novel, The Puzzle Master crams in enough for a whole Discovery Channel series on conspiracy, mysticism and esoteric history, plus dolls, Golems, quantum computing and a cute little Dachshund named Conundrum. How is a host supposed to cover all that at a rush. The answer, drink more coffee and don't pause to breathe! We manage it. We talk about all of the above, plus depictions of altered mental states, the curse of a Dan Brown comparison, and Danielle's search for the perfect haunted house. ABOUT THE PUZZLE MASTER Reality and the supernatural collide when an expert puzzle maker is thrust into an ancient mystery—one with explosive consequences for the fate of humanity—in this suspenseful thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Angelology“In short: The Puzzle Master = (The Da Vinci Code + The Silent Patient + sprinkle of Stephen King) x gorgeous writing.”—Angie Kim, author of Miracle CreekAll the world is a puzzle, and Mike Brink—a celebrated and ingenious puzzle constructor—understands its patterns like no one else. Once a promising Midwestern football star, Brink was transformed by a traumatic brain injury that caused a rare medical condition: acquired savant syndrome. The injury left him with a mental superpower—he can solve puzzles in ways ordinary people can't. But it also left him deeply isolated, unable to fully connect with other people.Everything changes after Brink meets Jess Price, a woman serving thirty years in prison for murder who hasn't spoken a word since her arrest five years before. When Price draws a perplexing puzzle, her psychiatrist believes it will explain her crime and calls Brink to solve it. What begins as a desire to crack an alluring cipher quickly morphs into an obsession with Price herself. She soon reveals that there is something more urgent, and more dangerous, behind her silence, thrusting Brink into a hunt for the truth. The quest takes Brink through a series of interlocking enigmas, but the heart of the mystery is the God Puzzle, a cryptic ancient prayer circle created by the thirteenth-century Jewish mystic Abraham Abulafia. As Brink navigates a maze of clues, and his emotional entanglement with Price becomes more intense, he realizes that there are powerful forces at work that he cannot escape. Ranging from an upstate New York women's prison to nineteenth-century Prague to the secret rooms of the Pierpont Morgan Library, The Puzzle Master is a tantalizing, addictive thriller in which humankind, technology, and the future of the universe itself are at stake. Hello and welcome to Castle Talk where we talk to writers and creators of today's genre worlds, I'm your host Jason Henderson, publisher at Castle Bridge Media, home of the Castle of Horror Anthology series. Tonight we're chatting with Danielle Trussoni, best-selling author of Angelology and often-horror columnist for the New York Times. Her new book is the supernatural thriller, THE PUZZLE MASTER (Random House, on sale 6/13). Find Danielle's books here, on my bookshop Danielle Trussoni ListOnce upon a time I was a host on a podcast called Booked. I was doing this podcast when Danielle published her last book, THE ANCESTOR. We were working on having Danielle on to talk about THE ANCESTOR, and for reasons I don't recall, it just never happened. Cut to a few months ago. I catch wind that Danielle has a new book coming out. I'm excited. Then I see the cover. I'm even more excited! Then I read the summary. Then, I realize that there's no way I'm going to miss another interview. We had a wonderful discussion about so many thing, as this book consists of so many things. Puzzles! Consciousness. Horror. Thrillers. So much! I'm excited for people to hear Danielle talk about her book, and I'm even more excited for people to get it in their hands. As a special treat, Danielle has shared with me a photo of the porcelain doll that has been passed down through her family generations, which was the inspiration for the “haunted doll” that's in the book. This week, I bring you MOAR monsters!!! Our guest is Christina Henry, whose new novel, Near the Bone fits so nicely as the unofficial second part to a cryptozoology-inflected series that began with Danielle Trussoni last week. Don’t worry, I’m not talking about the Loch Ness Monster for an hour, but the novel does feature a monster, some cryptid hunters and the very violent evils of both man and beast. Christina does manage to get me off the subject of monsters for a while, to give some insight into her surprisingly relaxed approach to writing, to her love of the outdoors and running (and how that provides a backdrop for her horror stories. And we even dip a toe into the pressing question of the age – CAN HORROR TAKE PLACE IN SPACE??We ask who determines what a horror novel is, and whether YouTube and the discovery channel have changed monsters forever. Oh, and I get the chance to reminisce about the time I nearly got eaten by a bear (sort of. It looked at me at least!) Enjoy!Near the Bone was published by Titan Books on April 13th. When was the last time a story took you completely by surprise? Danielle Trussoni’s The Ancestor ambushed me into loving it. What seems a standard Gothic fiction turns into something wholly weirder … and wilder … as a young American woman inherits a creaky European castle, and the monstrous baggage that comes with it.Dani came on the show – somehow finding time between writing her new novel and being the New York Times’ horror columnist – to talk about The Ancestor’s paperback release. We tiptoe around the book’s many, many secrets, and somehow find ourselves all the way to a discussion about Bigfoot. It’s that kind of chat.We also discuss how her own roots and heritage inspired the novel, why there are so many double standards about women authors and horror, how she fits existing myth and lore into her stories so well … and I regale her with one of my favourite pieces of British legend. She’s kind enough to pretend that she doesn’t obviously know more about horror than me – and she also exposes me as someone who mentions that I have a degree a little too much. It’s interesting, enlightening, and more than a little bit shocking. Enjoy! The Ancestor is out in paperback from Custom House on April 13th.Other books we discussed include:Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places (2016), by Colin DickeyThe Unidentified: Mythical Monsters, Alien Encounters and our Obsession with the Unexplained (2020), by Colin DickeySapiens: A Brief History of Humankind (2011), by Yuval Noah HarariFlowers in the Attic (1979), by V.C. Author and NY Times "Dark Matters" Columnist Danielle Trussoni, whose new novel is The Ancestor (William Morrow). This week’s Write the Book Prompt was generously offered by my guest, Danielle Trussoni, who also suggested it in a recent workshop. In a discussion of dialogue and character, Danielle suggested that her students have one of their characters, perhaps an elusive character who's hard to pin down, write an autobiographical letter of introduction to the student, to the author. Danielle says this can be a helpful way to find the voice of the character and learn more about who that person is. Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion. Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

You're probably tired of us by now. We just can't help ourselves. This time, we grabbed some time with Grady Hendrix to talk about his book that just dropped, The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. It was an excellent conversation that we hope you enjoy as much as we did! Coming soon: a review of The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni!

We're back again. Already. With another book review! This time, it's all about the neighborhood moms taking on vampires. And don't worry, we're continuing our break-neck pace of episode posting, because we'll be posting an interview with Grady Hendrix before the week is out! Then, the following week we'll be talking about The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni. Then maybe an interview with her. And somewhere in all of that, maybe we'll get some sleep.
This episode we’re talking with Danielle Trussoni, the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of the Angelology series whose new book The Ancestor (reviewed Tuesday at the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/07/books/review/the-ancestor-danielle-trussoni.html), which called it "as creepy as you might expect from an author who also writes the Book Review’s horror column.") is a gothic thriller about a New York woman who receives a letter that informs her she has inherited a title and a castle in Italy. But for a book that starts out following what seems to be a gothic thriller of the old school, it winds up going places that twist and subvert the genre. One spoiler that the publisher is comfortable giving away is that the lead-inherits-a-castle story moves gradually, terrifyingly into a Michael Crichton-like scientific deep dive into crypto-zoology, the study of unknown creatures.

The publishing industry has changed so much in the last decade and in today's interview, I talk to Danielle Trussoni about how her writer's life has shifted — both in what she writes, how she publishes and how she reaches readers. In the intro, I talk about the UK ending VAT on ebooks [BBC], why […] The post A Career In Writing With Danielle Trussoni first appeared on The Creative Penn.
When you're a screenwriter moving to TV or a novelist moving to screenwriting or even a comedy writer moving to drama, you'll have questions about how this new territory differs from what you're used to. Questions like... how does breaking a script work? Or... how do I write character development over the course of a two hour film rather than over a full TV season? Questions are normal. But typically, there are at least some factors that are givens – things that have been established over the course of decades. Problem is, since podcasts are new territory for pretty much everyone, those sorts of rules and standards about the most basic issues don't exist yet. There's no consensus about how to format a podcast script, let alone any popular beliefs about things like whether you need a writer's room. To find answers for some of these questions, we spoke to writers and producers who have made a name for themselves in the scripted podcast industry – some who are just starting out, and some whose podcasts have gone on to become TV shows. In Part One, we heard from LIMETOWN co-creator Zack Akers, HOMECOMING producer Alicia Van Couvering, and WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson about the industry's business side: what the market looks like, how to break in, and how to protect yourself once you're there. Now, in Part Two, we'll take a deep dive – with the help of Zack and Alicia, as well as Danielle Trussoni (CRYPTO-Z), and River Donaghey (AMERICAN AFTERLIFE) – into the creative side of the industry – from recruiting talent, to necessary skillsets, to creative satisfactions and beyond. Over the past five years, podcasts have exploded in popularity. You listen to them, and with over 700,000 active podcasts out there, chances are you or someone you know has a show of their own. A 2019 report by Edison Research found that 70% of the U.S. population has heard of podcasts and over 50% have listened to one. Fictional or scripted podcasts represent a small but steadily growing subset of the podcast industry. The Guild – and our members – have a lot of questions about this new frontier of scripted podcasting. Is it a lower-cost way to get a story known to the public… and to TV producers? Is it a viable, fulfilling way to create stories in its own right? What are some ways writers can protect ourselves as we explore this new form of work? To answer these questions, we spoke to writers and producers who have made a name for themselves in the scripted podcast industry – some who are just starting out, and some whose podcasts have gone on to become TV shows. In Part One, LIMETOWN co-creator Zack Akers, HOMECOMING producer Alicia Van Couvering, and WGA East executive director Lowell Peterson talk to us about the industry's business side: what the market looks like, how to break in, and how to protect yourself once you're there. I spoke to Danielle Trussoni about her second memoir, The Fortress, in late 2016, just a few days after the news had broken about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's marriage falling apart. The timing was apt, given that Trussoni's book detailed how, in a desperate bid to save her own marriage, she took the windfall she'd earned from her first novel and moved with her husband and two children to a medieval fortress in the middle of France. Spoiler alert: Moving to the other side of the world doesn't actually put everything that's gone wrong behind you.. When I mentioned to Trussoni that her husband's treatment of her read like blatant gaslighting, she told me that she'd never actually heard that term until after she escaped her marriage—to me, that was an important reminder of how easy it can be to find oneself in a relationship this destructive. She also observed that after a childhood shaped by her father's intense PTSD, she was used to and perhaps even attracted to turbulence and drama... and, too, conditioned to sort out her problems on her own, not showing even those closest to her how bad things had gotten and how much she needed help.
Kathryn interviews Danielle Trussoni, bestselling author of “The Fortress: A Love Story”. When Trussoni met a brilliant, mysterious novelist from Bulgaria, it was love at first sight. They embarked on a whirlwind romance and within months were married and began an adventurous life together. Eight years later and their marriage failing, they moved to Aubais, a picturesque medieval village in the Languedoc where Trussoni found the strength to overcome her illusions and start again. Kathryn also interviews neonatologist Jane Scott MD, author of “The Confident Parent: A Pediatrician's Guide to Caring for Your Little One – Without Losing Your Joy, Your Mind, or Yourself”. After living in and raising her kids on four continents, Dr. Scott knows that every country has its own traditions with regard to child rearing methods that work. Dr. Scott breaks down the assumptions about what good parenting entails by exploring the ways in which children succeed and thrive around the world.

Danielle Trussoni, author of THE FORTRESS, tells us how a google search for “paradise” yielded her a fortress and how 25 rejections yielded her a bestseller.
