Misinformation, fake news, hate speech, satire, the arts, political protest. These are all examples of what you might call disruptive speech. A free speech absolutist would say that all of these forms of speech should be tolerated, if not welcomed. On the other hand, it does look as though some of them are disruptive in a good way, and others are disruptive in a bad way. But can we tell the good from the bad in a way that isn't just politically partisan? Carl Fox, Lecturer in Applied Ethics at the IDEA Centre, thinks we can, and that we should treat different forms of disruptive speech differently. Here is Carl's paper on the subject in the Journal of Social Philosophy.Carl co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy and Media Ethics with fellow Ethics Untangled alumnus Joe Saunders, which contains a chapter by Carl on satire and stability. For further reading, there's Amy Olberding's book on manners and civility. In the interview, Carl mentions a paper on lying by Don Fallis. That's here:Fallis, D. 2009. “What Is Lying?” Journal of Philosophy 106(1): 29–56. And then there's the classic text on freedom and its limits, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty: Mill, J. S. 1974. Discover the keys to becoming a sales and leadership powerhouse as Jeff Fallis of GoFormz joins us for a riveting journey through his career, from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of sales success. Learn how mentorship, a strong work ethic, and the wisdom to carve your unique career path can accelerate your ascent in any industry. Jeff's remarkable story starts with selling hockey tickets in Arizona and evolves into spearheading the digital transformation for companies across construction and field service sectors, embodying the universal applicability of sales skills. Step into the arena where sports and business strategies converge, offering a masterclass in leadership. In this episode, Jeff and I unpack the nuances of guiding a team through the highs and lows, setting the stage for a winning mentality. We tackle the tough aspects of leadership, from the personal growth that comes with transitioning from individual contributor to a leader, to handling the complexities of delivering difficult news during a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing inspiration from sports legends, we delve into the importance of resilience, role definition, and learning from failure to create a successful business playbook. Cementing customer relationships and achieving lasting success hinges on the synergy between sales and customer success – a theme we explore with depth and insight. Jeff shares his philosophy that the sales relationship doesn't end at closing; it's only the beginning of an ongoing partnership that can make or break client retention. We reveal the strategies for setting clear expectations, the crucial first three months post-sale, and the benefit of a cohesive team-selling approach. New team members have embraced this philosophy, which keeps salespeople actively involved and supportive, solidifying the foundations of customer relations long after the initial handshake. Jeff Fallis is the currently the Sr. Director, Head of Sales and Customer Success at GoFormz, a San Diego based company focused on enterprise software for digital forms and data capture. His career spans over 17 years in sales and technology, having held positions as an individual contributor all the way to Executive leadership. As the Vice President of Sales at Blast Motion for 5 years, another San Diego based startup, he helped lead the company's transition from early-stage sales to multi-millions in business. As the VP of Digital Media Sales at Pointstreak Sports Technologies, he was a member of the Executive team which successfully executed the sale of the company in early 2016. Prior to joining Pointstreak, he held the position of Director, Digital Media Sales at The Active Network, which filed an IPO in May of 2011 and was a 4x Presidents Club award winner. Throughout his career, Fallis has consistently built strong sales teams and effective strategic GTM plans in the technology sector. Fallis holds a degree from the University of Dayton (Dayton, Ohio), where he was an NCAA Student Athlete, Honorable Mention All-American and 3 year starter on the Football team. He also holds a Master's degree in Sports Business Management from The University of Tennessee, where he was a graduate assistant in the Athletic Department for 2 years before moving on to start his career in business. Mr. Fallis was born in Akron, Ohio and resides in Carlsbad, California with his wife Breana and their two children, Stella 3, and Clay 2. Quotes: "In sales, the game never pauses. The ability to stay focused and disciplined underpins success in any competitive field." "Mentorship has played a critical role in my journey. I've been fortunate to have strong mentors who have helped shape my career and leadership style." "Sales is not just about closing a deal; it's about initiating a relationship that you continually nurture for long-term success." "Adaptability and learning that you don't know everything are key lessons that I've carried from my early career roles to today." Wellness entrepreneur and angel investor Hannah Fallis Bronfman has never “lived in a box.” Hannah talks to Ashley about harnessing her potential and allowing herself to expand beyond her wildest dreams. As a young girl growing up biracial in New York City, Hannah's parents taught her there were no limitations on what she could do or dream and that she belonged in every room she set foot in. When Hannah encountered challenges, her parents' lessons gave her the strength to own her identity and proudly defy societal expectations. Hannah also opens up about her IVF journey and how sharing her story online has provided support and representation for others going through similar experiences. Today as a beacon of inspiration to women around the world, Hannah attributes her many successes to authenticity, stepping outside of her comfort zone, and boldly betting on herself. Brendan Fallis has become one of the most sought-after curators in the industry sitting at the intersection of entrepreneurship and culture as well as the ever-evolving digital landscape. Fallis creates highly engaged content across various platforms, collaborates with the world's biggest brands, invests in the next big thing brands, speaks on panels and DJs at some of the most impactful events around the globe. Fallis' success has gained global recognition. He has appeared in campaigns for major brands such as La Mer, Grey Goose, and Audemars Piguet. Because of his digital footprint, Brendan is often tasked to collaborate with brands from a content perspective where he integrates the brand using his curated aesthetic and shares that content with his highly influential audience. Fallis has been featured by publications such as GQ, Vogue, Mr. Porter and Men's Health. A few years ago, Brendan began playing around with longer-form content via YouTube. He fell in love with the opportunity to showcase his life and work through a new lens. His YouTube Channel has since gained a cult-like following. Fallis shares behind the scenes content from his work, travels, and healthy lifestyle with his audience. He also shares insights into life as a husband to wife, Hannah Bronfman, and new parent to son, Preston. His dive into YouTube provided insight into how much his audience craves his content around home and renovation. This has led to Fallis' latest venture, Fallis Studios, a creative design and e-commerce brand centered around home projects and a gentleman's lifestyle. Fallis has also established himself as an investor. With his ethos of ‘people first', he entrusts his network and relationships he has built to find deals, ideas, companies that align with his interests and are being powered by some incredibly brilliant minds and culturally relevant people. With over 20 positions and building, he not only invests, but finds himself advising a good amount of the companies as well giving him a market advantage when you add the social capital on top. All the above was built on the foundation of music. Brendan started out as a DJ and has provided music for some of the most high-profile events and campaigns. He has worked with clients such as Absolut, Audi, Balmain, Chanel, GQ, Louis Vuitton, Samsung, Taco Bell, and Viacom, among others. Brendan gained worldwide attention from both the music and fashion industries for his production abilities when he created a track, “Day and All Night,” using Kate Moss' vocals for Stuart Weitzman's Fall 2013 Campaign. From there birthed the concept of building an agency, PRE.VEYOR, which manages non-traditional talent and has been growing significantly since it was founded in 2012. In this episode, Michael and Brendan discuss how to optimize your sleep, tips for eating clean when you don't want to, and actionable steps you can take to reverse aging.

We discuss his career as a commercial stills photographer, director of photography, and a general lighting nerd and how he combined these skills to create Glean Productions. So what is Glean Productions? From a cultural standpoint - Glean is a playful, light hearted company whose core principals are humility, humour, and hustle. From a technical standpoint - they basically utilize some fancy toys to capture content, and approach production in a very lean mindset. I've had the chance to see his team in action and what stands out for me is their teamwork and great attitude. It's not easy building a positive team culture and we discuss how he has been able to do that with Glean. CALL TO ACTION: Donate to Families - https://gf.me/u/yk5y4f WARNING: CHIME #1 (skip ahead 1 minute) At the same time, because they called it in, this other officer Fallis. had decided to just block off the parking lot and say, nobody in, nobody out, So Fallis was there, the other officers, the black officer and there was one other officer that came up the hill. Those officers are telling Fallis to stop that vehicle, stop that vehicle. So, when you read the report, it says that he was like, banging in the cars, bumper cars, and bumped this car, bumped that car, speeding through the parking lot. They're saying, hey, stop. And the officer just started shooting and the first shot went straight through the windshield, hit him right away. And then he kept shooting. So it was a lot of bullets down the side of the car. So he kept shooting him as he drove away into the back windshield. But Duane, he didn't make it probably about 200 yards down the street, car drove into the woods and he died right there on the scene. https://www.dcpofficial.com/duane-strong CREDITS: Host: Adell Coleman & Chris Colbert Executive Producers: Adell Coleman & Chris Colbert Edited & Sound Design: Byron Hunt Producers: Jacqueline Garofano and Ryan Woodhall Associate Producers: Maria Beckett & Quinton Hill Content Distribution: DCP Entertainment See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

At some point you were in a room somewhere at some event or some club (back when human beings socialized) and Brendan Fallis got in your head. He played that mix that got you to bob your head, shake your butt and get up and dance. Being one of the most sought after DJs in the world gives you that super power. Brendan has provided music for some of the most high-profile events and campaigns for clients across the spectrum such as Absolut, Audi, Balmain, Chanel, GQ, Louis Vuitton, Samsung, Taco Bell, and Viacom, among others. As if world renowned DJ isn't enough, Brendan has his finger in a lot of pies. As an entrepreneur his company Preveyor is a full-service entertainment management company with capabilities including talent development, brand strategy, music, film & television, branded entertainment, and a ton more. He's also a real estate investor and one half of a power couple being married to the incredibly talented Hannah Bronfman. Throw in influencer (don't worry he actually has an influence on his audience), a unique style aesthetic and digital presence, and that's a recipe for someone brands very much want to work with. Brendan and Michael discuss his work ethic, where he started and how he leveraged his growing popularity as a DJ to get in the room with some of the biggest brands in the world, and make deals that grew his business and personal brand. Plus, his original passion as a pro skier and his goal to reach the Olympics. Also, the hard work he puts into his marriage and his family. It's a great conversation with a modern day renaissance man. Don't forget to share this episode with your circle and be sure to follow the show on Instagram @bornormade. The fourth part in the second Bane Series! My guest is Stephen Fallis. Former Tour Manager for Bane and creator of "At Both Ends" hardcore magazine. Besides the members themselves, he's probably seen the band live more than anyone. We get into his upbringing in the forest in Canada coming from a family of ranchers, where he only has one or two radio stations and television channels all the way into stories of him with Bane in South America. A kid who lived literally in the middle of nowhere to eventually tour all over the country and overseas with Bane and several other bands. From booking little hardcore shows to hopping in a van and traveling the world. We had an interesting, behind the scenes conversation from his beginnings through today. Great talking with him. I hope you enjoy this one. Bane Forever.
Today I am chatting with an old ski buddy of mine, Brendan Fallis. We met back in the mid 90’s, ripping moguls together at the National and International levels. We both skied for Canada together in the early 2000’s and we share in the passion for high performance sport. Following his ski career, Brendan used all of his skills as a high performance athlete and transferred them into real life city living. He moved to New York City, and began to revolutionize the DJ industry. Fast forward 10 years, add entrepreneur, thought leader, social media influenecer, YouTuber and a title I’d personally like to add--Health conscious/self love/self care GURU…Brendan Fallis has become one of the most sought after curators in the industry. Whether it is a DJ gig or partnership, Fallis is a go-to for brands around the globe because of his distinct aesthetic, digital presence and incredible taste. Brendan has been featured by publications such as GQ, Vogue and Men’s Health. He also has been included in “Best Dressed” lists for Vanity Fair and Mr. Porter, and was named one of the “15 Hottest Men to Follow on Instagram” by MSN. An old friend and an early tech mentor, Pat Fallis, died this past month. In this episode, I share my favorite memory of a bbq lunch from 2008, two laptops, and two lessons that have made me a better educator, a better leader, and a better human.
In this episode I speak with Brendan Fallis. You can find him everywhere on Instagram and Youtube, but if you're lucky enough, you'll find him where he's most at home, behind a mixer and turntables. He's a man of many passions, and has made his way into the automotive world in NY over the last few years. His design taste is resoundingly apparent in all facets of his business, ranging from fashion and spirits, to architecture and automotive - a fascinating man in so many respects.
Paden Fallis hosts the podcast In and [Out of] the Arena (available on Apple, Stitcher, etc), and it's an atypical interview show: he creates a very cool roundtable discussion with working actors out there, people from all over the country. Actors with credits on Broadway, network TV, indie films, voiceover, and everything in-between. It's a weekly, topic-driven show, so each episode focuses on a different issue actors face. Paden is an actor, director, writer and producer, currently based in Atlanta, Georgia. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His first screenplay, As Far as the Eye Can See, made its World Premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival. Just a bit of what we cover: Where Paden is on his journey Why he wanted to do a podcast What he has learned about acting since starting the podcast The Trader Joe's incident with actor Geoffrey Owens Professional jealousy and avoiding bitterness How social media drives casting Actors who want to feed the soul One thing he wish he had done differently when he started I hope you enjoy this conversation and this experiment—I'd love to hear what you think about this kind of episode, if it's helpful, and if you'd like to hear more like it. Kobo Writing Life Director Mark Lefebvre interviews Terry Fallis, multi-award winning author of The Best Laid Plans, The High Road and Up and Down. Mark and Terry talk about: • How they met when Mark was a bookseller at McMaster University's bookstore, and Terry, a former McMaster student self-published The Best Laid Plans in 2007. • Mark's comparison of Terry's writing to John Irving • How Terry applied his knowledge of politics and engineering to create the characters of Daniel and Angus (the main characters from The Best Laid Plans and The High Road) • Terry's original nativity when venturing into the realm of self-publishing back in 2006/2007 • How Terry used podcasting to gain a worldwide audience for The Best Laid Plans and was the first Canadian to follow in the footsteps of such podcasting pioneers as Scott Sigler • Mark's original reluctance as a bricks and mortar bookseller to carry The Best Laid Plans or even read this satirical novel of Canadian politics, but how, after a single page, Terry's prose won him over • How, feeling “up” from the McMaster Bookstore launch event led to Fallis deciding to submit The Best Laid Plans to the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour (which Terry won and which led to his book deal with McClelland and Stewart) • How Terry is thrilled to have Beverly Slopen as his agent and Douglas Gibson as his editor & publisher • Winning November 2010's CBC Canada Reads for the Essential Canadian Novel of the Decade • The importance of local community bookstores and the great relationships that Terry has forged with so many amazing Canadian bookstores (Canadian Booksellers Association honoured Terry with the CBC Libris Author of the Year Award in 2013 • CBC's creation of The Best Laid Plans miniseries (and having lunch with the fictional Angus McClintock in Ottawa during filming) - (which will begin airing January 2014) • Terry's use of humour and heartfelt moments in The Best Laid Plans and The High Road • Terry's membership in the “Write What You Know” club – and how he takes advantage of that by writing about things he already knows a lot about (public relations, politics, etc) rather than spending more time doing research • How Terry's latest novel Up & Down seemed to almost predict the incredible manner by which Commander Chris Hadfield captured the hearts and minds of people who again became interested in the space program. • A bit of insight into Terry's forthcoming (spring 2014) novel No Relation – about a writer with the unfortunate name of Ernest Hemmingway (although spelled differently) who is trying to leave the family business to pursue a writing career • How Terry manages to write novels while working full-time • The importance of writing detailed outlines (each outline approximately 65 page long) and how, when you know that much about the story the efficiency of getting the manuscript completed in about 4 months • How, despite the detailed outlining, how at least half of the comedic moments and humour comes to Terry during the actual writing process • Terry's creative/musical family and the dinnertime family tradition which included the goal of trying to tell a story that would make his stone-faced father laugh • The importance of being true to one's own writing and one's own personality • How there are likely some fine manuscripts sitting in publisher slush piles right now and the opportunities authors have to creating bold new opportunities For this episode's side-bar note, Mark reflects back on Terry's journey into publishing and how he and authors like Scott Sigler used podcasting as a way to help find an audience for his novel. Mark mentions the website Podiobooks.com and using programs such as GarageBand (MAC) or Audacity for creating the audio files.
