The boogeyman of Staten Island wasn't just a story—he was real. Cropsey, the legend of a child-snatching madman lurking in the ruins of Willowbrook State School, became a chilling reality when kids began vanishing. The nightmare had a name: Andre Rand, a drifter with a dark past and ties to the infamous asylum. Convicted of kidnapping but suspected of far worse, Rand's story leaves behind more questions than answers. Was he a lone predator, or part of something even more sinister?

In the shadows of the Willowbrook State School, where the myth of Cropsey evolved into a harrowing series of child disappearances, lurks a deeper, darker secret. While the urban legend of Cropsey painted a picture of a monstrous figure preying on Staten Island's vulnerable, the real horrors might trace back to clandestine activities far more sinister. Unbeknownst to the public, the chilling atmosphere and secluded nature of Willowbrook may have made it a perfect candidate for the CIA's MK-Ultra project. This covert program, aimed at developing mind control techniques, often targeted unsuspecting populations—mentally disabled children and adults secluded in institutions like Willowbrook would have been prime subjects, invisible to societal scrutiny. Andre Rand, a former orderly at Willowbrook, who later became infamous for his alleged involvement in the disappearances, might have not only been a scapegoat or a perpetrator but also a participant—or even a victim—of MK-Ultra experiments. The lack of records and the CIA's tight-lipped stance on MK-Ultra's full reach leaves a gap wide open for speculation: Was Rand conditioned or manipulated into becoming the monster he was believed to be? This shadow narrative threads together the tales of government experiments with the flesh-and-blood boogeyman of Staten Island, suggesting a conspiracy stitched deep into the fabric of this chilling historical tapestry.

On Oct. 24, 1978, Ethel Louise Atwell of Newark, went to work on Staten Island and never returned home. It was dark - around 6 a.m. - when she arrived at her job as a nurse aide at the Staten Island Developmental Center on the grounds of the former Willowbrook State School. Workers heard the 46-year-old scream from the parking lot. By the time police arrived, Ethel had disappeared, but they found her purse, buttons from her coat, her dentures, and one of her shoes just outside her parked car. Her keys were found in the woods. Police and volunteers scoured the 300-acre property for days -- her sons looked for her in the woods for months -- but no one found any evidence of Ethel. In August 1978, only two months before Ethel's disappearance, another nurse was found buried in a shallow grave not far from where Ethel parked her car. Several children also disappeared from Staten Island in the 1970's and 1980's. Could Ethel's disappearance be linked to these other cases? For more than four decades, Ethel's family, including her four sons, has been haunted by the questions of who abducted her and why. Eyewitness News investigative reporter Kristin Thorne returns to the woods with her family and tries to uncover clues in this terrifying cold case in the latest episode of "Missing." In the wake of the pandemic, our healthcare system's vulnerabilities were laid bare, exposing a pressing need for affordable medical care, particularly as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age. The escalating costs of healthcare have pushed countless Americans to the edge of financial ruin and beyond. The crucial question that arises is whether there exists a solution to address these systemic issues. Join me in this captivating podcast as I engage in an enlightening conversation with the esteemed Dr. Bill Bronston, delving into the depths of our healthcare system's challenges and exploring potential options for a brighter future. Dr. Bronston, a passionate advocate for healthcare reform and social justice, has dedicated his life to serving others. Born in 1939 in Los Angeles, he grew up in a family connected to the film industry and had a deep-seated desire to care for people from an early age. In 1961, he enrolled at USC Medical School, drawn to its reputation for clinical medicine and a desire to serve the underprivileged. However, he soon became disillusioned with the mechanistic and impersonal approach to medicine he encountered in his studies. Inspired by the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War protests, Dr. Bronston became an activist and organized medical, nursing, and dental students across the nation under the banner of the "Student Health Organization." Their goals included advocating for a socialized healthcare system, supporting the civil rights movement, and demanding curriculum changes in professional schools to incorporate a culture of care and progressive medical values. As a conscientious objector, Dr. Bronston pursued his psychiatric residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka State Hospital. During this time, he played a pivotal role in organizing an American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union, leading to a union job action that gained administrative control of all Eastern mental health hospitals in 1968. Relocating to New York, Dr. Bronston immersed himself in various activist movements, including the Black Panther Party, the women's movement led by Gloria Steinem, and the struggle against the Vietnam War. He also became involved with disability rights activists, working to connect their cause with the broader anti-institutional agenda. In 1970, he served as a clinical physician at Willowbrook State School, an institution for individuals with intellectual disabilities, where he exposed and helped shut down inhumane conditions through a federal class action lawsuit. Returning to California in 1975, Dr. Bronston assumed the role of medical director for the Department of Developmental Services and Department of Rehabilitation Services for the state, a position he held for over two decades. In the present day, Dr. Bronston remains committed to the ongoing pursuit of justice. He expresses deep concern over the current state of medical education, emphasizing the corporate influence, mounting costs, and burdensome debt that hinder doctors from engaging in community service. He strongly believes that healthcare should not be a commodity for sale, denouncing the current system as one that prioritizes profit over personalized and affordable care. Despite the opposition from the insurance industry, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital cartels, Dr. Bronston is confident that the single-payer movement will prevail. He argues that people are increasingly aware of these entities being adversaries and the need for universal access to the remarkable advances in healthcare and medical research. Dr. Bronston envisions a radical change occurring within the next decade, driven by a transformational shift in the pursuit of human rights throughout history, rather than a gradual evolution. TRIGGER WARNING -- This week Garet took the lead and tells us all about the Willowbrook State School. This year marks the 50th anniversary of a landmark exposé spearheaded by Jane Kurtin but made popular and videorecorded by Geraldo Rivera -- yes, THAT Geraldo Rivera of a New York State-run "school" for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities where residents were subjected to everything from Department of Defense experiments and being denied access to running water, clothing, and regular meals. Garet tells us what happened after this exposé came out, what changed, and we take a look at the things that might still need changing. Be sure to stay tuned all the way through to hear our ADHD wins of the week, and follow us on IG & Facebook @thebarisanklehigh, and on Twitter & Tiktok @AnkleHighPod -- and leave us those 5-star reviews wherever you find us!   Sources:  https://www1.nyc.gov/site/mopd/events/our-history.page?slide=10 https://web.augsburg.edu/english/writinglab/Avoiding_Ableist_Language.pdf https://disabilityjustice.org/the-closing-of-willowbrook/ https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/nyregion/willowbrook-state-school-staten-island.html https://crimereads.com/the-dark-history-of-willowbrook-state-school/ https://study.com/academy/lesson/deinstitutionalization-movement-of-the-1960s-and-other-mental-health-issues.html https://www.silive.com/news/2022/09/i-saw-something-awful-so-i-wrote-about-it-advance-reporter-details-her-groundbreaking-expose-of-willowbrook-state-school.html

For our Halloween special, we bring you two frightening American urban legends! First Rainie takes us to the state of Virginia where the “Bunny Man” roams Fairfax County. Douglas Griffin was an escaped mental patient who roams the forest in Fairfax killing and mutilating little bunnies shoes corpses he hangs from his bridge. Legend goes that if you go to the Colchester Overpass (colloquially known as Bunny Man Bridge) on Halloween night and call out “Bunny Man, Bunny Man, Bunny Man” at midnight, he will appear in his bunny suit and cut off your head with an axe before hanging your body from the bridge like he has will all his other helpless victims. Then McKenzie takes us to Staten Island where the legend of Cropsey has been told for centuries. Cropsey (also an escaped mental patient) kidnaps and tortures children before killing them. This was often used as a cautionary tale to keep young children from wandering off, especially into the woods or into the tunnels under the abandoned Willowbrook State School where Cropsey is said to live. This was harmless until the 70's when the tale became all too real!If you liked listening to the show and want to hear more from us in the future then please rate review and subscribe to us in Apple podcasts or follow us on your favorite podcatcher. Eliise võtab teemaks Willowbrook'i kooli/ vaimuhaigla/lastekodu, mis asub samuti NY osariigis. Art allows us to process our lives and complex emotions individually, and to come together collectively while building community. Join our conversation on why having brothers and sisters with disabilities stimulates the creation of art.  Allan B. Goldstein is a distinguished NYU Tandon School of Engineering Senior Lecturer, whose Disabilities Studies course teams up students and community members with disabilities to create digital stories and discuss disability readings. Goldstein is the older sibling and guardian of his brother Fred, a survivor of the notorious Willowbrook State School. Goldstein's writing explores the social barriers impeding an inclusive society. Allan also serves on the Pace University Disability Film Festival screening committee, which features films by and about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Liz Sargent has an extensive background in dance, theater and film, which informs how she tells her stories. Liz is an award-winning producer for Cyprian Films. She is one of 12 children and in her work often draws upon her experiences having siblings with disabilities. Liz is producing “12 Turtles,” a feature documentary exploring who will care for her parents as they get older and who will inherit the responsibility for the siblings who cannot care for themselves. The Sargent family navigates the hard truths of aging, disability, adoption, and an evolving definition of family. Willowbrook state school was established in 1947 as a school for the, “mentally and physically defective and feeble minded” according to NY State governor at the time, Thomas Dewey. This school became the largest institution in the US yet gave way to the most deplorable living conditions. The students were left naked, sitting in their own feces and urine, abused and neglected. This real American horror story gave way to the FX Network series, American Horror Story, Asylum. This state school, once uncovered for its atrocities, became the College of Staten Island located in one of the 5 boroughs of NY City. Despite its beautiful sprawling campus, tunnels still lurk underneath this campus where gurneys, sheets and wall shackles still remain. This episode, although creepy, sheds light on how the mentally ill and disabled were treated then. Although we have come a long way, there still needs to be tremendous change in how the mentally ill and disabled are treated today. If you or a loved one suffers from mental illness or a physical disability and you are unsure of resources or their rights, please visit www.usa.gov/disability-rights for more information. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Deep in the woods of Staten Island, is the abandoned ruins of what used to be Willowbrook State School, a virtual dumping ground for the mentally ill. And from the depths of the horror that was an understaffed and underfunded nightmare, came the legend of Cropsey. This week, Hannah tells Katy about how the legend of the Staten Island boogeyman became all too real when children began to go missing from the small community. Was Cropsey a convenient scapegoat for an unspeakable horror? Or was there really a boogeyman out there, snatching up kids and hiding out in the old Willowbrook tunnels? This one is a rollercoaster, and will leave you with more questions than answers! Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpUCLbTqABIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpVEjzO6Dd0https://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/14/nyregion/body-unearthed-on-si-is-that-of-missing-girl.htmlhttps://allthatsinteresting.com/andre-rand-cropsey

Jude was taken in by Kit where she lived the rest of her days in relative comfort. Except she was maybe given cancer by Kit’s alien kids? Speaking of aliens, we get no resolution on that front. Kit gets cancer in his 40s and disappears without a trace. Johnny infiltrates Lana’s team to confront her after the interview. But she’s been briefed by the police and she’s ready for him. He complains like a pathetic baby and she pacifies him before shooting him dead. We close this season with Cat’s superb and shocking research into the Willowbrook State School, the real life mental institution that inspired Briarclif. The true history is worse than anything Ryan Murphy could have dreamt up. We end with some loose TV talk. Rory is still working her way through the 1980s miniseries North and South and Cat is revisiting some old favorites like Battlestar Galactica and Buffy. https://www.instagram.com/downwardfacingdeath/ email us at downwardfacingdeath@gmail.com

Autism has always been a part of Alison Singer’s life. When she was a little girl in the 1970s, she would visit her older brother, who has non-verbal autism with a cognitive disability, at the now-infamous Willowbrook State School on Staten Island. “I just remember hearing a lot of screaming and moaning,” she recalls. “I hated it.” By the time Alison’s first daughter, Jodie, was born with severe disabilities in the late 1990s, society and autism science had evolved, thanks to parent-activists like Alison’s mother. But there was still so much work to be done. Alison quickly became an advocate in her own right. In 2009, she co-founded the Autism Science Foundation, which funds autism research. In this interview, Alison is joined by her daughter, Lauren, an undergraduate at Yale University, who has also devoted herself to improving our understanding of autism and designing interventions to help people with autism thrive. Together, they reflect on their family’s story, including how they’ve turned love and adversity into advocacy, and what they’ve learned along the way.Links: The Seaver Autism Center for Research & Treatment at Mount Sinai 24th Annual Advances in Autism Conference (Sept. 17, 2020)Alexander Kolevzon, MD (Jodie’s doctor)Autism Science Foundation

With the sting of critical and commercial failure for their Some Time In New York City double album still lingering in the air, John and Yoko let trepidation be damned in the name of a charitable cause to take the stage at Madison Square Garden in the waning weeks of summer 1972. The One to One benefit concert was organized on short notice by Geraldo Rivera, following his expose of the appalling treatment of handicapped children at the Willowbrook State School in Staten Island. With enthusiastic support from the Lennons, Geraldo’s event would bring a Beatle back to the Garden for a charitable cause in the span of a year - the last being George Harrison’s historic Concert for Bangladesh. John and Yoko were backed by the Elephant’s Memory Band, and Lennon tore through a hurriedly-rehearsed set of solo songs, covers and even the Beatles’ Come Together across two performances that late August day. While the shows left John energized, the reviews were once again harsh - a blow that would derail any future touring plans for John and send him once again to a dark place. John wasn’t the only former fab to struggle in the latter half of 1972 - Paul McCartney’s home was raided on drug charges, and Ringo Starr’s former band leader Rory Storm died alongside his mother in their Liverpool home on September 28th. George Harrison, however, found himself back in the studio developing tracks for the follow-up to his mega-successful All Thing Must Pass...
