Samson is supposed to save his people from the Philistines, but he continually chooses what is right in his eyes. (We've known since Genesis 3 that is not a good idea.) Waiting for Christmas by Lynn Austin In this hope-filled Gilded Age Christmas novella from bestselling author Lynn Austin, the year is 1901 and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is descending on New York's Fifth Avenue. For the first time in her privileged life, Adelaide Forsythe won't be swept up in it. She couldn't be happier about the prospect of a quieter Christmas. That's not to say her transition from Miss to Mrs. has been without challenge. Though she doesn't regret marrying for love instead of wealth, she can barely light the hearth or cook more than burnt toast. She feels woefully unprepared to run her own household. Then, on the first Sunday of Advent, winter winds bring change through two unlikely means: a young orphan boy, hiding near Adelaide's front steps, and a seasoned housekeeper who seems too good to be true. The boy, Jack, claims he isn't an orphan at all and is desperate to reunite his family. Adelaide and her husband Howard work tirelessly to solve the riddle of Jack's story, while Adelaide's new endeavors open her eyes to a world beyond her past experience—and all the challenge and possibility it holds. As Christmas approaches, small glimmers of wonder light the way toward the answers Adaleide seeks and the most miraculous gift of all. The novella length of this delightful work of Christmas fiction about the true meaning of Christmas makes this a great stocking stuffer or host/hostess gift Beautiful hardcover, giftable size Great companion to All My Secrets by Lynn Austin Includes discussion questions for book clubs Learn more about Lynn Austin on her website. Having been a long-time fan of Lynn Austin, I was thrilled to get to have a chat with her about her new, Gilded-Age generational saga, All My Secrets. Listen in as we chat about favorite books, the impact the women in our lives have on us, and what it means to trust the Lord's plan for our lives. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Why I Love When Great Authors Write in Multiple Genres! Look, I get it when an author finds his or her niche and can carve out a whole career writing fresh, new ideas in that one area. It's a skill I envy and definitely do have. Because of that, when I run across an author like Lynn Austin who has written in just about any era, it's comforting. Someone else gets it. The more we talked about her book, Eve's Daughters (psst... read it! Even if you already have!), the more certain I am that it's not just my favorite--it's also the first of hers I read. I'm sure of it! But when she described one of her Biblical fiction series as "All you ever wanted to know about Hezekiah," I decided I had to have them. #BecauseHezekiah! From the days of good ol' Hezzie all the way to present, her books deal with the plans God has for us and what happens when we follow (or don't) those plans. All My Secrets by Lynn Austin Bestselling author Lynn Austin returns with a luminous work of historical fiction set amid the opulence of Gilded Age New York, where three generations of women in one family must reckon with the choices they have made and their hopes for the future. New York, 1898. The only thing more shocking than Arthur Stanhope III's unexpected death is the revelation that his will bestows his company―and most of the vast fortune that goes with it―to the nearest male heir, leaving his mother, wife, and daughter nearly impoverished. His widow, Sylvia, quickly realizes she must set aside her grief to ensure their daughter, Adelaide, is launched into society as soon as the appropriate mourning period passes. If Sylvia can find a wealthy husband for Addy before anyone realizes they're practically destitute, there will be little disruption to the lifestyle they're accustomed to. Sylvia's mother-in-law, Junietta, believes their life could use a little disruption. She has watched Sylvia play her role as a society wife, as Junietta once did, despite what it cost them both. Junietta vows to give her granddaughter the power to choose a path beyond what society expects. But for Addy to have that chance, both mother and grandmother must first confront painful truths about their own choices. Only in bringing their secrets to light can they hope to reshape their family inheritance into a legacy more fulfilling than they ever dared dream. In his season 3 podcast series, Cecil Taylor identifies and explores the Top 11 themes of Jesus, derived from the number of his mentions in the Gospels. Each month, Cecil will count down the themes toward the #1 theme. This month's episode is on the #3 theme, Trust and Obey God through Jesus Christ. More than 60 times, Jesus described the atmosphere of love and trust that can be established between God and humans, and urged us to find the faith to be obedient to God's will and God's commands. On this podcast, Cecil explores samples of what Jesus said about trust and obedience, breaking it down into the four sub-topics: To love and trust God through Jesus Christ; to obey God's will; Jesus bemoans humans' lack of faith; Jesus assures his followers that in obeying, they will lose their fear and achieve peace of mind. When you buy things through this site, we may earn an affiliate commission.Become a Patreon and enjoy special perks and bonus material. On this episode, we discuss what are nonstarters in a Christian historical novel. What would make you not pick up a book or not finish reading it. Thank you, for sharing your thoughts on social media. If you aren't following Christian Historical Fiction yet, please do!Whare are some nonstarters for you?1. Complicated plots, where there are too many storylines or too many characters to keep track of. Readers just want to relax and escape for a while. Not too simple or complex, try Melanie Dobson's The Winter Rose.2. Series with a cliffhanger, where the storylines aren't all tied up at the end. If you like series but don't want the cliffhangers, try out Barbour Publishing's series, including True Color Crimes, Heroines of WWII, and Doors to the Past. 3. Foul language. This is just a nonstarter from the beginning. We read Christian fiction to get away from things like this. There are work arounds.4. Gratuitous violence. Readers don't like violence played out on the scene in a graphic way. It's a delicate balance, but it can be done. Check out my novel, The Melody of the Soul, for a look at how I handle it..5. Poor editing. There is nothing worse that a book riddled by grammar and spelling mistakes, not to mention plot holes and the like. 6. Tropes you don't like including a secret baby, friends to lovers, and the death of a child. I mention History Tea Time with Lindsay Holiday and her series on American First Ladies. You can check that out here.7. Insanely rich, totally good looking hero and heroines. Readers can't relate to them. If you haven't checked out Kelli Stuart's book The Master Craftsman, her contemporary hero (it's dual time) is a nerd. I loved him!8. Stories that are too scary. They can be freaky and hard to read when you're alone or at bedtime. Again, check out Barbour Publishing's True Color Crime series or Jaime Jo Wright's books.9. Hero or Heroine are not on scene right away. That makes it hard to know who they are, and the reader feels like they're missing perspective or part of the story. A nonstarter for many.10. A lot of chatting. Readers like books that get on with the action!11. First person present tense POV.. But check out Gabrielle Meyer's book When the Day Comes for first person done well (it is past tense).12. Bad theology. If you want some theologically sound novels, I try to be sound. Also look at Barbara Britton, Angela Hunt, Lynn Austin, among others.13. Cheating. Like with language, we read Christian novels for a reason.14. Big words. That kind of goes along with stories that are too complicated.15. Silly storylines. Readers just don'e like their intelligence to be insulted. While they don't mind fun, silly is just too much.
Lynn Austin shares the development of her story Long Way Home and offers a free copy as a giveaway. Pinch of the Past features a piece on All about train wrecks in the 1800s. On the Cliffs of Foxglove Manor by Jaime Jo Wright is another great time split story from Wright with characters everyone can relate to—a man battling past scars through addiction and two women from different time periods trying to find their worth and handling that trauma in unhealthy ways.
It's always a good day when you pick up a new Lynn Austin book and lose yourself in one of her amazing stories. So, find out what prompted Lynn Austin to delve into WWII fiction, about her latest release, and about the war in general. Bonus: there's a hint about what's coming, too! Listen in. Forgotten WWII Events Will Captivate You in This Inspiring Book Back in the dark ages, otherwise known as my early homeschooling years, you know... the late '90s and early '00s, I read everything that Lynn Austin put out. Then life happened. Writing happened, and when I got back to reading again, I was so far behind on authors that I didn't pick up her newest books. I had all these other authors to check out. Stupid me. Seriously, guys. What was I thinking? Because Lynn Austin is still writing powerful Christian fiction with depth, historical importance, and faith lived on the page. And we don't want to miss out on that. Her three most recent books are all WWII-inspired novels including: If I Were You, Chasing Shadows, and Long Way Home. Learn about Lynn's research, her focus on how faith helps people do incredible things, and on how we must stay grounded in the Word if we can hope to stand fast in our faith. The short answer is, “No.” I was never the type of kid who always had her nose in a book or who wrote stories in her journal every night by lamplight. I was too busy living in my imagination all day like the little boy with the stuffed tiger in the cartoon “Calvin and Hobbes.” I would imagine wild, dramatic stories wherever I went. After attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan for three years, I married my husband Ken, and completed my degree in psychology at Southern Connecticut State University. Then we set off on a real-life adventure, living in Bogota, Colombia for two years where I taught 4th grade in a Colombian school and Ken performed in the symphony orchestra. With no TV and plenty of time to read, I became an avid reader for the first time in my life. That's when I began to dream of writing the kind of books I loved—books that made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think. The demands of our growing family postponed my writing career until Ken's work took us to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was during those long Canadian winters at home with my children that I finally started carving out a few hours of writing time each day while they napped. The moment I started writing, I discovered how much fun it was to use my imagination again and create wonderful characters and stories. I was hooked! As my children grew, I returned to teaching and learned to squeeze in writing time amid the busyness of family life. For eleven years, I studied how to craft good fiction, and endured all the ups and downs of trying to get published. My first novel was finally published in 1995—and it was the same book I had started writing during naptime: Gods and Kings. It evolved into a five-book series, Chronicles of the Kings. While researching this series, I had a chance to pursue one of my “bucket list” dreams, volunteering on an archaeological dig. My son Joshua and I traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in a month-long dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience not only provided background information for the Chronicles, it also inspired my novel
This week Lynn Austin and I talked about her next book Chasing Shadows, which was released on June 8th. We also talked about research, bicycles in the Netherlands, and the most fun she's had researching for a novel (Hint: it involves an archaeological dig in Israel). If you've never read a book by Lynn, you'll want to after learning more about her process and books. Amy Lynn Green stops by for an interview about her excellent forthcoming historical novel Things We Didn’t Say. She has worked in publishing for six years at Bethany House, so book lovers and writers alike will want to tune in for the Things We DID Say (I’m so sorry). You can learn more and order her – again, excellent – book at www.amygreenbooks.com/books/things-we-didnt-say/.For more interviews, podcasts, and free books, visit www.authorsdozen.com. Things We Didn't SayReleases: November 2020“Headstrong Johanna Berglund, a linguistics student at the University of Minnesota, has very definite plans for her future . . . plans that do not include returning to her hometown and the secrets and heartaches she left behind there. But the US Army wants her to work as a translator at a nearby camp for German POWs.Johanna arrives to find the once-sleepy town exploding with hostility. Most patriotic citizens want nothing to do with German soldiers laboring in their fields, and they’re not afraid to criticize those who work at the camp as well. When Johanna describes the trouble to her friend Peter Ito, a language instructor at a school for military intelligence officers, he encourages her to give the town that rejected her a second chance. As Johanna interacts with the men of the camp and censors their letters home, she begins to see the prisoners in a more sympathetic light. But advocating for better treatment makes her enemies in the community, especially when charismatic German spokesman Stefan Werner begins to show interest in Johanna and her work. The longer Johanna wages her home-front battle, the more the lines between compassion and treason become blurred—and it’s no longer clear whom she can trust.”“This compelling novel of life on the US home front during World War II fascinated me from beginning to end.”Lynn Austin, author of If I Were You“With impeccable research, Amy Lynn Green casts a light on the POW camps in America during World War II and on the dangers of prejudice. Make space on your bookshelf, because this book is a keeper!”Sarah Sundin, bestselling and award-winning author of When Twilight Breaks and the Sunrise at Normandy series“Things We Didn’t Say is a stand-out novel as brilliant and brave as its heroine. . . . An utterly satisfying read you’ll want to share as soon as you reach its conclusion.”Jocelyn Green, Christy Award-winning author of Veiled in Smoke“Amy Green pens a fascinating story of intrigue and love in her book Things We Didn’t Say. Set against the backdrop of World War II, Amy takes care to bring history alive as she moves her characters through situations that force them to take a deeper look at who they are and what they really want out of life.”Tracie Peterson“A fascinating excavation of a little-known moment in US history executed with an inimitable voice and extremely clever style. Excessively readable, this winsome epistolary is underscored by a deep look at patriotism, prejudice, unwavering faith, duty, and love. . . A dazzlingly smart and confident debut, Things We Didn’t Say is as moving as it is memorable.”Rachel McMillan, author of The London Restoration“Amy Green’s debut novel kept me guessing to the very end—twist upon twist upon twist. She is a master plotter, so read every single word!”Beverly Lewis“Things We Didn’t Say is the best sort of book: where the characters feel like friends, the story feels like home, and the pages beckon you to turn them ceaselessly, immersing you in an absorbing world. Amy Lynn Green expertly wields wit, heart, history, and enveloping storytelling in this glorious debut!”Amanda Dykes, author of Set the Stars Alight and Whose Waves These Are“Based on actual World War II experiences, and sparkling with humor and touches of romance, this is an impressive debut from a multitalented writer.”Julie Klassen, author of The Bridge to Belle Island

Net als Ruth omarmde Lynn de grote veranderingen in haar leven, waardoor er krachten en talenten naar boven kwamen waarvan ze niet wist dat ze die had. Lynn is getrouwd met Ken en ze hebben drie kinderen.

This week, we talk with Deanna Fugett (not to be confused with Deanna Troi). We get right into it with a discussion about oddly named characters, and where some of these names come from (don't ask...) Next, because this is a speculative fiction show, we talk at length about Little House on the Prairie (Of course...) Liberty wasn't around this week to steer us back on track... (because she spontaneously combusted... well, that's our story, anyway...) We eventually got back on track (kind of...), and learned that Josh loves depressing endings (Aaron can't stand them...) Who's Deanna's favorite super hero? Is it Green Arrow? Super Grover? You'll have to listen to find out. Does Deanna prefer Scrivener? Word? Pen? Crayon? We also take a quick break to provide a public service announcement of things computers don't like (such as hammers and crumbs...) Lingo 101... We're thinking of making this a regular feature... And last, but not least, being eaten alive (metaphorically...) Some of Deanna's favorite authors: - Liberty - Aaron - Josh (he's almost done...) - Lynn Austin, who writes historical fiction/romance. She has a really good series set in the Civil War (U.S. History, not Marvel, sadly) that does a good job of showing the conflict and motivation from both sides. (Also, if you like history, check out "Across Five Aprils") Deanna thinks critique groups are pretty darn important. We think so too! Extrovert shadowing! As always, get full show notes at LasersDragonsAndKeyboards.com.
