This episode of the Higher Practice Podcast explores the intersection of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and psychedelic-assisted healing, particularly with ketamine. Psychotherapist Dr. Nick Bruss provides an overview of IFS, a compassionate approach that harmonizes internal parts like exiles, managers, and protectors to foster self-awareness and healing. He discusses his three-month treatment program, incorporating preparatory sessions, psycholytic ketamine doses, and integration practices to help clients anchor their experiences into daily life. The conversation highlights how psychedelics naturally facilitate introspection, creating a powerful synergy with IFS therapy. Additionally, we explore the role of IFS in couples therapy, emphasizing self-responsibility and deeper emotional connections. The episode concludes with insights into upcoming workshops and a new book, reinforcing mindfulness, self-compassion, and the evolving landscape of mental health care. What is attachment and how does attachment theory different from the primary real-life attachment we learnt as babies? The two often get confused. In this episode I talk to child, adolescent and adult psychotherapist Dr Graham Music who has been described as "one of the most deep thinking child psychotherapists in the world."We talk about these differences, plus the concept of attachment which is how secure we feel with our primary care given and how our needs were met, and the impact that can have on our later life. Attachment is at the core of every letter I get, ergo every problem I think we come across in our daily lives. How we relate to others can very often lead back to our early attachment figures. Dr Graham Music is registered with the Association of Child Psychotherapists and the UKCP. He is also the author of some amazing books such as Respark, Nurturing Natures and Nurturing children. But behind the glittering facade of a marriage to the notorious "Wolf of Wall Street," Jordan Belfort, lay a reality far removed from the glamorous image. From a model navigating the gritty streets of Brooklyn to a psychotherapist and author, Dr. Macaluso's narrative is one of profound transformation and resilience. In this podcast, CJ Miller explores and unpacks the effects of trauma and creativity with psychotherapist Dr. Don St. John.  Dr. Don has spent a lifetime exploring healing modalities after being raised by a physically and verbally abusive mother and an "almost non-existent" father. His recently revised book, "Healing the Wounds of Childhood and Culture," is available on Amazon. He has been engaging the four pillars of wholeness for almost 60 years: the Somatic, the Psycho-emotional, the Relational, and the Spiritual," and has taught and presented to the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Brazil. CJ shares how he often asks his art students to reflect on their lives and see how their artwork was received as a child. He has found that moving past these situations can release new levels of creativity. Dr. Don explains that his first response to the abuse was to freeze and live in a fantasy world. It wasn't until his early twenties that he recognized a need for healing. "Trauma affects your entire being, even your very tissues," said Dr. Don.  "It affects our ability to relate to each other and our capacity for love." There is a creative aspect in turning those wounds into gold. The interview includes the importance of listening to ourselves and others, addressing stored trauma in the body through the Continuum Consciousness movement, reexamining cultural belief systems, expressing gratitude, and listening to that internal voice for guidance.  Dr. Don reminds us to view trauma resolution as an "adventure of a lifetime" and recognize that you're having this moment because of everything that came before. Dr. Don is certified as a Continuum Consciousness Teacher and believes in releasing trauma through the body. Trauma keeps us from living in the present because we are trying to protect ourselves from the wounds of the past. He assists people in fluid movement explorations to release trauma and resistance. Continuum is an approach to exploring how we live in and move through our bodies. Continuum is a portal to a deeper awareness of, and connection to, embodiment, movement, learning, growth, well-being, and creativity. Attention to internal experience through breath, sound, meditative awareness, and fluid movement expands our experience of embodiment. Listeners can find local teachers for this modality by visiting www.continuumteachers.com. In conclusion, Dr. Don encourages listeners to embark on their healing journey and become lifelong learners. He encourages everyone to be aware of the benefits of therapy and concludes the interview by asking, "Can you let love in? Can you increase your capacity for love?" For more information on Dr. Don St. John, visit https://pathsofconnection.com/ Facebook: facebook.com/don.s.john.90 LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/don-st-john-36636a55 For more information on CJ Miller, visit https://spiritualartisttoday.com

As Chris says if it's difficult to bring up at the beginning of the relationship it's a whole lot harder to bring up at the end when things may have gone wrong.A lot of the letters I get at the Guardian are about Wills and Will disputes and whilst it's about the money, Chris and I also look into what money can stand in for, what it represents and how it can reflect the value we put (or not) on ourselves. If this episode has tempted you to get a financial advisor the please make sure whomever you deal with is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority https://register.fca.org.uk/s/.Let us know if you feel this episode has brought up any thoughts, or if you have ideas for other episodes: conversationswithannalisa@gmail.comIf you'd like to support us you can leave a one off donation here: https://supporter.acast.com/conversations-with-annalisa-barbieriIf you'd like to listen to this episode, past or future ones, ad free then consider becoming a patron on Patreon, from just £3 a month. In today's podcast I interview psychologist and author Dr. Tina Payne Bryson. Dr. Bryson is the author of multiple books, including Bottom Line for Baby and the following books co-authored with Dr. Dan Siegel, The Power of Showing Up and The Yes Brain, as well as The Whole-Brain Child. Tina is also the Founder and Executive Director of The Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice, and of The Play Strong Institute, a center devoted to the study, research, and practice of play therapy through a neurodevelopment lens, both located in Pasadena, California. Tina shares her experience with the unexpected death of her father and the impact it had on her. She talks with us about how to best support both young children and teens who have experienced a sudden or unexpected death and provides tools that parents, grandparents and caring adults can use to “show up” or comfort children and teens during this challenging and difficult time. We also talk about resiliency in children and how love, support, and patience from important adult figures can help young people heal and lead healthy lives even after the experience of a sudden or unexpected death of a loved one. Key Points: Adults serve as meaning makers for children of all ages. Young children and teens look to us for guidance on how to interpret life events, especially the challenging ones. Children and young people need the adults in their life when they are experiencing stress and difficult life challenges, especially the sudden or unexpected death of a loved one. Tina shares the 4 S's to use with children and teens. They need to feel Safe, Seen, Soothed and Secure during these difficult times to foster healing. When it comes to grief, I highly recommend adults release any expectations about how you believe your children should react or behave in bereavement or mourning. Just let them be. Notwithstanding destructive or self-harming behaviors, children and teens will grieve in the manner they need. I encourage you to offer a safe space to process their feelings, ask questions or request additional help. When you let the grief occur in the context of this type of relationship, they are more likely to be safe, seen, secure and be soothed. Give yourself grace and compassion and know that you are enough. Tina's references to the attachment literature provides evidence that it only takes one caring, consistent, loving adult in a child's life to contribute to the emotional well-being of a healthy young adult. Show Notes - Interview with Dr. Pamela Blair In today's podcast I interview the Reverend Dr. Pamela Blair, perhaps best known for the book she co-authored that was first published the year 2000 entitled “I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye: Surviving, Coping & Healing after the sudden death of a loved one.” Dr. Blair is a retired psychotherapist who specialized in working with individuals grieving the loss of a loved one especially after a sudden death. Although retired, Dr. Blair continues to lead grief support groups and write. In today's podcast interview she shares her personal grief story, highlights the impact her book “I was not ready to say goodbye” had on those she worked with and explores excerpts from her new book – The Long Grief Journey. Together we delve into the concept of long-term grief, ways to cope with continued loss that occur throughout the grief continuum, how to experience happiness within the context of grief and the notion of holding hope during grief. Key Points: Pamela's book, I Wasn't Ready to Say Goodbye, has been the most consistent resource I recommend to any client who has recently experienced a sudden or unexpected death. This book is a comprehensive guide for individuals and families who are living with a sudden death and provides information on different types of loss, for different family members at different points of time. The Long Grief Journey by Pamela Blair and Bradie McCabe is an excellent resource that covers so many of the challenges long-term grievers encounters and provides exercises you use to work through many of the areas where you may be feeling stuck. Pamela discusses hope when it comes to grief. So many people have trouble finding hope again after a sudden death. She talks about finding hope in the support you get from family, friends, or support group members and about finding hope in new growth in nature. Her thoughts brought me back to the interview I had with Kim Cantin, who described finding happiness in new, simpler things in life, mainly with connections to people where she experienced joy in their presence. I encourage those of you struggling to find hope in your life right now after the devastating sudden loss of a loved one to examine how you are defining hope. Perhaps you are still using definitions of hope from the life you lived prior to your unexpected death. It may be time to redefine your concept of “hope” in a way that matches your current experiences. If you want an opportunity to connect with Dr. Pamela Blair, please join our Facebook group “Talking about the Podcast Untethered with Dr. Levin.” The Facebook group for this week's podcast also contains the reference for the book on continuing bonds discussed in this podcast by Dr. Denis Klass as well Dr. Blair's website and information about her new book – The Long Grief Journey. For more information on Dr. Pamela D. Blair, please visit http://www.pamblairbooks.com. Thank you so much for joining today's episode of Untethered Healing the Pain After a Sudden Death. Our podcast is now hosted on my website www.therapyheals.com. We are back-after a brief hiatus, with a brand new episode of the podcast. Tonight, we are discussing mental health with my good friend and Psychotherapist Dr. Dwayne Buckingham. May is dedicated to "Mental Health" and we felt it was extremely important, with everything that is happening in our society today as it relates to mass shootings, and this rise in mental illness that we take some time to talk about mental health. Dr. Buckingham is a mental health expert, having worked in the field for over 20yrs he knows the ins and outs of the mental health profession. And in this week's episode he shares some very important keys to improving and maintaining good mental health. We also talk about the impact of mass shootings on our mental health, and why, mental health analysis should be apart of background checks. This is definitely an interview you don't want to miss! PLUS, we have a dynamic Thought of the Week for this episode entitled, "It Matters!" In line with today's theme of the importance of good mental health, however, we share some virtues that we believe are far more important. I'm sure we've all heard that Black Lives Matter, and Black Voters Matter, and Money Matters, and Education Matters, but we plan to share some spiritual virtues that are far more important than our ethnicity, our skin color, our financial portfolio or even our education. Spiritual attributes that are vitally important to our success as children of God, and we can't wait to share them with you as apart of this week's podcast. Needless to say, this week's episode is power-packed and definitely worthy of sharing. We hope you take some time this week; for the sake of your mental health and others, and listen to this very important episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-s-nimmons/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-s-nimmons/support

Kathryn interviews Author,Psychotherapist Dr. Jane Greer.People employ denial because it makes their lives easier in the moment. It even makes their life appear to be better — the way they'd like it to be, the way they wish it were — rather than what it actually is. It's important to recognize denial's sneaky voice and to talk back to it with clarity and strength. This means exploring what typically traps people in their misery, frustration, and disappointment with their relationships. Being honest with ourselves lets in the voice of reason that we must hear in order to live a healthier emotional life. Dr. Jane Greer helps readers to squelch their tendency to let their own and others' denial rule their lives. She is a marriage and family therapist, psychotherapist, author, radio host, and creator of “SHRINK WRAP,” the popular commentary on what we can learn from the trials and triumphs of not only celebrity, but all relationships.Kathryn also interviews Author Steph Jagger.Steph Jagger lost her mother before she lost her. Stricken with an incurable disease that slowly erases all sense of self, her mother struggles to remember her favorite drink, her favorite song, and—perhaps most heartbreaking of all—Steph herself. As the woman who loved and raised her begins to slip away, she makes a promise: to write her mother's story before it's entirely lost. Aware of her mother's waning memory, she proposes a camping trip—which her mother agrees to embark upon. An adventure full of horseback riding, hiking, and “tenting” out west quickly turns into one woman's reflection on the mysteries tucked inside ourselves and our ancestry—and what it means to love someone who doesn't quite remember the person she spent her lifetime becoming. Jagger is a sought-after mentor and coach whose offerings guide people toward a deeper understanding of themselves and their stories. Her work, including speaking and facilitating, lies at the intersection of loss, the nature of deep remembrance, and the personal journey of re-creation.

How often do you ask yourself, “How am I doing?” If you're like most of us, the answer may be–not often enough! Detroit Pistons psychotherapist, Dr. Corey Yeager, invites us to ask ourselves this very question. His new book, “How Am I Doing? 40 Conversations to Have with Yourself” provides thought provoking prompts for deeper self knowledge–of who you've been and who you intend to become! I highlighted some of my favorite quotes from Dr. Yeager's book and asked him to elaborate on them. Specifically, we explore: The importance of being sure you're the one writing your story! Listening to your inner voice and monitoring your self talk. Growing up, Dr. Yeager heard things like, “Don't become someone your family wouldn't recognize!” How do we honor our family of origin while still resonating with our authentic selves? The tension between “Making the right choice” vs. “Making the choice right!” The impact of untruths we tell ourselves! Dr. Yeager's definition of True Freedom and the heavy responsibility inherent to freedom. How we can frame our pain and struggles as gifts! How “personifying” your relationship with anxiety provides you with control over what feels uncontrollable Dr. Yeager's book digs deep yet remains accessible to all–no matter where you are in your journey toward self discovery! Psychotherapist Dr. Harriet Fraad is joined by activist physician William Bronston MD to discuss his astonishing book 'Public Hostage Public Ransom: Ending Institutional America': "Public Hostage should make you outraged. The mistreatment of disabled people in Willowbrook and the mistreatment today of disabled people living in institutions must be understood and together we must fight to provide people the supports they need to live their lives integrated in our communities with dignity and respect. We as a society are responsible for these atrocities if we remain silent..." "William gives readers an in-depth look at how and why places like Willowbrook existed in the first place, and how financial incentives, hard-wired into the way health care is delivered in this country, encourage institutionalization of one form or another at the expense of more humane, more effective, and more cost effective home based health care. The result has been the continual use of for profit nursing homes and “assistive living centers” to which millions of elders and people with disabilities remain consigned..." "His book delivers a timely, well-written and meticulously documented argument that radical change is needed. Do you enjoy your own company? Really. Do you? Many of us have been spending a lot of time alone lately due to the pandemic (unless of course, you have kids living at home, in which case you probably wish you had more time alone). We can see being alone as miserable and waste the time complaining and binge-ing, or we can see being alone as the gift of quiet time, as an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate our own company.  Psychotherapist Dr. Stephanie Dowrick, in her best-selling book “Intimacy and Solitude,” calls it “welcoming time with your own self as you might welcome time with a friend.”  We can also see it as a time to tap our own Innovators DNA for new, creative ideas and solutions. Listen to this webinar Joan did for Lead Up for Women on how. You'll hear: About the five components of the Innovator's DNA and why they matter How to use alone-time to tap your own creativity. Why being your own best friend matters - and is fun, and makes you a better partner, friend, boss or co-worker. Steps you can take today, and tomorrow, including for your career.
