Mary McMillan Terry: Mary McMillan Terry's desire to follow Christ in fighting racism led her and her family to the multiethnic Knoxville community where they live. She teaches on justice and racism. Her passion for equity in education has led her to volunteer and serve on the board at Shora Foundation (an after-school and summer program for children) and to serve in her children's school system. The Downtown Maryville Association is putting on Friday Night lights on July 27 th . It’s a fun free night out designed for the community to discover, peruse, and patron local businesses in the heart of Maryville. This time – there’s an Instagram hunt!!! Charlene DeSha, the Executive Director of the Downtown Maryville Association shares all of the fun happening from 5:30-8:30 and how this event supports area kids with school supplies. It is July – but the Emerald Youth Foundation is getting ready for Christmas. The organization is starting their Christmas in July campaign from July 23,-27, 2018. now.. collecting gifts and donations for the Emerald youth Christmas store in December. John Crooks, of the EYF says the Christmas store allows parents to shop and purchase gifts at a discount price and therefore, be able to make their children's holiday extra special. Emeraldyouth.org/Christmas. The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley recently took in 71 cats when the Cumberland County Humane Society was dealing with air conditioning problems. Teresa Underwood, the Marketing and Development Director explains the shelters needs for the cats as well as the other pets up for adoption. How to adopt, and fundraising events coming up in the near future.
This week's "East Tennessee Now" is all about the kiddos, starting with the Burger Bash to benefit East Tennessee Children's Hospital. World's Fair Park in Downtown Knoxville is the place to be on August 11, 2018. From 11-4, you can make your way around the park and sample sliders... as dozens of teams compete for your vote! Seth Linkous, Communications Director for ETCH explains how the money generated from $10 ticket sales and the team entries will provide alternative treatment options for the hospital's little patients. Some of those treatments include essential oils to relieve pain, as well as massage therapy for pain management. Yes it is the summer, but for the Emerald Youth Foundation, it's almost Christmas in July! The organization is running this campaign to get a kick start on Christmas, so city kids will have an extra special holiday when it does roll around. They are collecting new gifts to stock Emerald's Christmas Store where parents shop for deep discounts. It helps families provide Christmas for their children and teens. John Crooks, Emerald's Director of Communications and Erin Wright, Campus Activities Coordinator tell us about the program and campaign's success.
The Emerald Youth Foundation in Knox County wants to serve more children in the afternoons and summers. They launched a new initiative called Imagine a City. John Crooks, the Director of Communications says it's a ten year plan to groom more kids to become leaders in the community. The program focuses on faith, learning and health. But, it will take more funding, staff, mentors and coaches to be a success. A new 3-D, no-compression breast imaging unit. The Knoxville Comprehensive Center is the first in the country to acquire the new technology. If you've been for a mammogram, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Not with the Koning Breast CT. Andrew Gitschlag, Marketing Manager at KCBC, explains how the new technology gives physicians a clearer look, while lessening the anxiety for patients.
