This week on Men of Steel, Case and Jmike are joined by Frank Hernandez to discuss the Legends of Dead Earth annual for The Adventures of Superman. We unpack how the story explores an oppressed people who've been gaslit into believing they were the villains—and the role Superman plays in revealing the truth, restoring history, and reframing heroism in a broken world. Special guest Frank Hernandez, actor known for Star Wars Revelations and Farragut projects, joins to discuss the 1996 'Legends of Dead Earth' annual for Adventures of Superman. Context Setting: Legends of Dead Earth Event and Superman Annual (01:40 - 03:40) Explanation of the 1996 DC Comics event: not a traditional crossover but annual issues connected with a future after Earth's death. Connection of this Superman annual to prior Men of Steel conversations, especially referencing the Man of Steel miniseries and the Supergirl annual. Plot Summary and Story Explanation (03:40 - 08:00) J. Mike explains the story: a future alien (Willig) discovers a Jor-El hologram crystal that downloads Superman's legacy into his mind. Willig mistakes himself for Superman and tries to live up to that heroism amid a slave-like alien society oppressed by space pirates called the Sarkons. Introduction of Characters and Setting Details (08:00 - 13:00) The Sarkons are space pirates enslaving the Kirati race. Willig adopts a homemade Superman costume inspired by the crystal's data. ️ Willig's Character Development and Conflict (13:00 - 18:00) Willig's blue-collar background and family life portrayed humorously but insightfully. His assumption of the Superman mantle is both a personal awakening and rebellion against the slave narrative imposed by the Sarkons. Climax and Resolution Summary (18:00 - 23:00) Willig confronts his oppressors and is ultimately killed, delivering a heroic speech before dying. The story is capped with a statue commemorating Willig as a hero, echoing Superman's mythos. Critical Analysis and Reflection (23:00 - 27:00) Discussion about the story's condensed nature—could have been a longer arc. The story is a science fiction parable about oppression, mythology, and heroism. Social and Mythological Themes (27:00 - 33:00) The story deals with themes of historical revisionism, systemic oppression, and the reclaiming of heroism by the oppressed. Reflections on how Superman stories absorb and reflect cultural values and how myth evolves through retelling. ️ Dated Elements and Audience (33:00 - 44:00) One-dimensional villainy discussed; space pirates having a 'district manager' seen as anachronistic or odd. Possible target audience as younger readers. Legends of Dead Earth's Format and Distribution (44:00 - 50:30) The story's place in DC's publication history noted. Availability issues raised: this issue not currently on the DC Universe app, unlike other annuals. Closing and Guest Information (50:30 - 55:42) Frank Hernandez shares updates on his production company, Elysian Sky Productions, work with AI music, and upcoming Farragut projects. Hosts share social media and Patreon information.

FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageOne audacious night on the Mississippi may have decided the Civil War. We dive into the capture of New Orleans in 1862 and show how Farragut's risky run past Forts Jackson and St. Philip didn't just seize a city—it fractured the Confederacy's map, gutted its finances, and reshaped the war's momentum. New Orleans wasn't just a symbol; it was the South's engine: the largest population center, a world-class port, a shipbuilding hub, and the gateway for cotton exports and foreign credit. We unpack why the Crescent City mattered so much and how the Confederate high command miscalculated the threat. As Grant pressed from Tennessee, Richmond drained New Orleans of troops to defend Corinth's rail hub, leaving the Gulf approach weak and the river poorly protected. The real heartbreak lies with the unfinished ironclads—CSS Louisiana and the CSS Mississippi. Union officers later admitted that a battle-ready Louisiana in the narrow channel could have ravaged Farragut's wooden fleet. Timing, not just technology, proved decisive. From Porter's mortar bombardment to Farragut's pre-dawn dash, the action was fast and consequential. When New Orleans fell, the Union claimed the river's mouth and effectively split the South. The ripple effects were brutal: cotton exports collapsed, international credit evaporated, and inflation surged as the Confederate government printed unbacked money. Supply lines from Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana withered, starving armies and cities of food, salt, and matériel. We also explore the powerful counterfactual: if New Orleans had held—its shipyards humming, ports reopened, and ironclads unleashed—European recognition might have become more than a dream. If you're ready to rethink where the war's true turning point lies, this story delivers a sharper lens on strategy, logistics, and the cost of misjudgment. Listen, share with a history-loving friend, and leave a review to tell us: was the war really lost on the night New Orleans fell?Key Points from the Episode:• New Orleans as the South's economic engine and largest port• A divided city with weak support for secession among voters• The Anaconda Plan's focus on the Mississippi River• Confederate misread of the threat and troop shifts to Corinth• Unfinished ironclads Louisiana and Mississippi as lost opportunities• Porter's mortar bombardment and Farragut's breakthrough• Strategic split of the Confederacy after the city falls• Financial shock: lost exports, credit, and spiraling inflation• Logistics cutoffs from the western breadbasket and long-term effects• Counterfactuals showing how completion of ironclads could change outcomesOther resources: Want to leave a review? Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program by talking about a breaking and unsettling situation in Washington, D.C., where two National Guard troops were shot near the Farragut area, roughly a mile from the White House. He emphasizes how little confirmed information is available, noting that the incident occurred within the last hour and that the condition of the troops remains unknown. As reports rapidly shift, Brett stresses the importance of verifying details—such as claims that a suspect is already in custody—before drawing conclusions. He highlights the broader climate of hostility toward the National Guard and other military personnel, expressing concern that the troops may have been targeted. Brett also points out that President Biden, though not in Washington, has been briefed on the situation. Throughout the segment, he calls on listeners to pray for the wounded service members and reflects on the troubling violence affecting cities across the country. City ELECTION COVERAGE IS FREE at CompassKnox.com In this week's installment of the Compass Points podcast, Scott and Jesse talk about County Commission's consideration of some controversial items involving scrutiny of local nonprofits and the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk; fundraising in the City Council races; the selection of a developer for the former St. Mary's Hospital site; and the Town of Farragut's home business ordinance. They also look ahead to this week's meetings of County Commission and City Council, and the end of early voting in the Nov. 4 city election.
Nothing really except we talk about both on this week show. Rhonda Lee under the expert puppiteering starts throwing PRESHADE at 2026 Mayor candidates...another well strung marionette dances on irrelevent WOKE issues claiming tax abuse...all the while Farragut plans to require permits for getting home delivery...oh...and we fall down the rabbit whole of some national trappings on immigration and forign affairs...
With early voting in the Knoxville election beginning this week, Scott breaks down the City Council races and the sales-tax increase referendum. He also covers the Supreme Court's decision not to intervene in a lawsuit against the town of Farragut, Knoxville College's new interim president, plans to film 9-1-1 Nashville in Knoxville and next year's visit from the Savannah Bananas. Korby finds Gamble at a doorway to the Vezda prison and the Enterprise goes to rescue him. This is a trap to lure out M'Benga, as he and Gamble need to be together to open the doorway. The crew learn that the unique combination of DNA inside Batel matches the biology of the Beholder statue that guards the prison. To open the doorway without M'Benga and Gamble, the crew devise a plan to simultaneously fire on it from the Enterprise and the Farragut; Spock performs a mind meld with James Kirk so the two can perfectly sync their actions. Pike and Batel enter the prison and confront Gamble, who destroys the Beholder and frees the other Vezda. Using her emerging power, Batel creates an illusion in which she and Pike live a full and happy life together. She then traps all the Vezda in the prison and becomes the Beholder. Pike struggles to move on without Batel as the Enterprise sets out to explore uncharted planets.Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!Welcome to Trekcast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast! “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail” During a survey mission to Helicon Gamma, Commander James T. Kirk of the USS Farragut thinks it would be a good idea to put boots on the ground and explore the world firsthand. Think again. Just as he pitches the idea to his Vulcan captain, the planet is vaporized by an incredibly powerful weapon fired from a ship that looks like a giant sea creature. With most of the crew, including Captain V'rel, injured, Kirk takes command of the Farragut. His first time in the chair under pressure takes a life-or-death turn when the Enterprise is captured by space pirates and swallowed by the beast. He must overcome his crisis of confidence and rise to the occasion to save both ships, a tall task aided by a group that will one day become his own trusted crew. When James T. Kirk is super bored as First Officer on the Farragut, his run of bad decisions starts even before a Trogdor attack thrusts him into command. But after Enterprise saves his ass and gets chomped by the scavenger ship instead, now Captain Kirk has to figure out his leadership style in time to set a trap and own the consequences.
