Anyone could write a book for kids, right? Well, that does seem to be the prevailing view, so Hannah's been on the Zoom with Emma Reeves, writer and Chair of The Writers Guild of Great Britain, to find out why and how she writes for children, and why it's nowhere near as easy as everyone thinks. * Emma's new play for kids, The Glass Slippers, is at The Lighthuse in Poole from December 7 until Christmas Eve. Writer's Guild of Great Britain TV Chair, Emma Reeves – or award-winning Emma Reeves as I am contractually obliged to refer to her - is one of the most respected screenwriters working in television for younger people today. As creator of Eve and the latest iteration of The Demon Headmaster she is in the top echelon of writers of thoughtful and fun drama for children. Emma was lead writer on The Worst Witch and she has written for The Dumping Ground, Hetty Feather, Tracey Beaker and a long list of other great shows. She is a long time Doctor Who fan, and has written Doctor Who, Bernice Summerfield and Torchwood audios for Big Finish. Recently she has adapted “The Worst Witch” in to an Olivier Award WINNING stage show, and has been working on a forthcoming adaptation of “My Mum Tracy Beaker” for TV and I'm properly happy to have her as a guest on #SLEDGEHAMMER.
Riding high from her recent success with My Mum Tracy Beaker (not to mention The Worst Witch and The Demon Headmaster), writer Emma Reeves chooses one of Doctor Who's least celebrated adventures - but who cares? It's one she loved as a child and very story means something to someone, so get your tinsel out and have a serving of ham as we grab this one by the Morlocks and see if Toby can undergo a conversion on Karfel. Omnibus edition for those of you who like these all in one go.
Today's episode is the second part of my interview with Emma Reeves! Joyously, we really dive deep into her work at Big Finish, both Doctor Who and Torchwood! If you enjoy Influencing the Doctor, make sure to follow us on Twitter @InfluencingA and share with your friends and family.
Today's episode is the first half of our interview with Emma Reeves! Wonderfully kind and insightful, Emma really made this a can't miss episode. Hear us talk about her TV work, Doctor Who and lots of praise for Russell T Davies! It's another story with "Time" in the title, which in the classic series has never been a good omen when it comes to the popularity stakes. It's Toby's first commentary with the 6th Doctor and even our special guest, TV writer and producer Emma Reeves, thinks this isn't an especially good example of Doctor Who - it's just a Doctor Who story that she is fond of. Well, that is all very well for her, but will Toby, and you dear listener, depart Karfel with a scream? Most do apparently. So let's try to avoid that, eh?
Hoping to ease the disappointment surrounding the postponement of this weekend's Terrance Dicks Celebration event, I've dusted off this recording I made of a panel held at the London Comic Con last October celebrating Terrance's life and work. I hope it goes some way towards filling the gap. The panel was hosted by Matthew Sweet, with contributions from Emma Reeves, Paul Cornell, Mike Tucker and Katy Manning. The audio quality is frankly poor, but I've done the best I can to reduce the interference and with a bit of persistence and concentration it's entirely possible to follow the conversation. This podcast is available entirely for free and I make nothing from it, but in the spirit of the Celebration event, I'm pledging to donate 10p for every download we get (up to a maximum of 500) to Terrance's chosen charity of Save the Children. I think it's a great conversation and tribute to Terrance and I hope you enjoy it.
This week I chatted to writer Emma Reeves about how she feels that the 13th Doctor has so far been a missed opportunity, and how she feels it's time for a fat companion. Leeds-based children’s theatre company tutti frutti has teamed up with York Theatre Royal and playwright Emma Reeves, Olivier-nominated for her adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather, on a new adaptation of the children’s folk tale Snow Child, inspired by Arthur Ransome’s adaptation of this traditional tale entitled The Little Daughter of the Snow. Emma spoke to BTG editor David Chadderton early in the rehearsal period about the play, tutti frutti's collaborative production methods and her career writing adaptations of children's classic literature for stage and TV. Snow Child by Emma Reeves, directed by Wendy Harris for tutti frutti, opens on 3 October 2015 at The Arc in Stockton on Tees and tours the UK and Ireland, with a brief visit to Hong Kong and Singapore, until March 2016, ending at York Theatre Royal.
