In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast.... Review - The Claws of Axos This time, Phil and Paul look at The Claws of Axos, starring Jon Pertwee as the Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant. Written for television by Bob Baker and Dave Martin and adapted by Terrance Dicks for the Target novelisation, bumbling government ministers with delusions of grandeur, CIA agents with pleasantly ugly faces and a shrill musical score is the order of the day. So listen as our reviewing pair compare the television and book versions. They also take the opportunity to celebrate 20 years of Doctor Who returning to our screens. The Dæmons is the final story in the eighth season of Doctor Who, with Jon Pertwee playing the eponymous hero (see episode 48 covering The House That Dripped Blood for some fantastic Pertrivia). It aired over five weeks on BBC1 from 22 May to 19 June 1971. In The Dæmons, the Master, played by Roger Delgado, awakens the ancient horned alien Azal, hoping to gain his immense power. Delgado, a close friend of Pertwee, worked extensively on stage, TV, film, and radio. His work included the BBC's Quatermass II, Battle of the River Plate, Hammer's The Mummy's Shroud, and English dubbing for The Horror Express (see episode 7). He often played villains in British action-adventure series like Danger Man, The Saint, The Champions, and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Tragically, Delgado died in a car accident in Turkey while filming a Franco-German mini-series. He was only 55 years old. The Dæmons began as an audition scene for Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning, and was later reworked into episode four. Manning attended Miss Dixon and Miss Wolfe's School for Girls, becoming close friends with Liza Minnelli. She socialized with stars like James Mason, Dirk Bogarde, and had tea with Noël Coward at The Savoy. As a teenager, she modeled for Biba and dated Jimi Hendrix, Richard Eyre, David Troughton, Derek Fowlds, Stewart Bevan, and Peter Bardens, Rod Stewart's keyboard player. Manning had a close bond with Pertwee, who would pick her up daily for filming, either in his car or on his motorbike, where she would ride pillion. They even raced with Dick Emery and Sir Ralph Richardson to see who could reach the BBC studios first. After three years on Doctor Who, Manning left to pursue other acting work. Pertwee was saddened by her departure, citing her exit and Delgado's death as two major reasons for leaving the show a year later. Producer Barry Letts wanted to write a story about black magic to tap into the zeitgeist of the Age of Aquarius and frighten young viewers. However, script editor Terrance Dicks had concerns it might be seen as Satanist. The story was revised to focus on a scientific threat with occult themes. Originally, the Master was to worship the demon in a church, but to avoid offending religious viewers, the scenes were moved to a crypt, later referred to as a cavern (though the set remained crypt-like). Letts co-wrote the script with playwright Robert Sloman under the pseudonym Guy Leopold, as the BBC frowned on production staff writing for their own shows. Much of the serial was filmed on location in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, with two weeks allocated for filming—more than double the usual time—leading to more outdoor scenes. The cast included comedy actress Damaris Hayman, who starred as Miss Hawthorne. Hayman had an interest in the supernatural and served as an unofficial adviser on the production. Her friend, a practicing witch, praised the accuracy of the scripts. Future Sooty puppeteer Matthew Corbett had a brief role in the final episode as a hooded coven member who objects to Jo's sacrifice. Corbett, whose great-uncle was Harry Ramsden of fish-and-chip fame, had to change his name when joining the actors' union Equity, as there was already a Peter Corbett registered.Studio taping for The Dæmons was completed on 16 May 1971, just weeks before the final episode aired. This episode included footage of a model church being blown up, which was so realistic that it prompted viewer complaints. If the clip of the Brigadier's helicopter crashing into the heat shield looks familiar, it was borrowed from the James Bond film From Russia with Love. This week Doctor Who Literature takes a week off from the Target novelizations to explore the rest of Jason's childhood bookshelves. I started reading the Target Doctor Who titles when I was 11, but I started reading just before turning 5. That's a lot of reading long before I found Terrance Dicks. So let's take an hour and walk through what Jason loved before Doctor Who. We'll discuss the Dutch-language children's fiction of Dick Bruna; the magic of Little Golden Books; the Big Three comics lines of the 1970s: Marvel, DC, and Gold Key/Whitman; baseball annuals aimed at children; and, of course, the Hardy Boys, the Choose Your Own Adventures, and the pictorial novelizations of Peanuts TV specials. We hope you'll join for this week as we walk not just through Jason's childhood bookshelves, but also, really, his brain. EDIT: I found that version of "The King" on YouTube. It's amazing. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

A big week for beginnings this week, with a new Doctor, a new origin story for the Daleks, and a whole new approach to defeating the bad guys. Oh, and a new podcast to discuss them all on. So let's welcome Patrick Troughton to the studio floor, as we discuss The Power of the Daleks. Notes and links The most recent Blu-ray release of The Power of the Daleks was the Special Edition in 2020, which includes a compilation of all the surviving footage, including material shot on an 8mm film camera pointing at a TV screen. This material was also included on the Lost in Time DVD release way back in 2004. Simon also mentions a site which chronicles the upsetting history of Doctor Who's missing episodes. It's called The Destruction of Time, and it's well worth reading, if a bit dispiriting at times. The Omnirumour was a series of rumours arising during 2013 that as many as 90 missing Doctor Who episodes had been found and were ready for return to the BBC Archives, possibly as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations. This didn't happen, obviously, but we did at least get nine episodes: five episodes of The Enemy of the World and four of The Web of Fear. Let's continue the tradition: here is Elizabeth Sandifer's essay on this story, which (inevitably) discusses the importance of mercury to the new Doctor's character. Nathan and Brendan refer to Kieran Hodgson's Bad Doctor Who Impressions version of The Daleks, which is something you should go and watch immediately. James very thoughtfully plugs Brendan and Richard's new podcast about The Avengers, called The Three-Handed Game, in which they are joined by old friend of the podcast Steven B to discuss episodes from different eras in the history of the show. At the end of the episode, Simon recounts the story of the gradual revelation of The Power of the Daleks throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Among the things he mentions are Peter Haining's Doctor Who: A Celebration (1983), the Radio Times Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special (also 1983), The Making of Doctor Who by Malcolm Hulke and Terrance Dicks (2nd edition, 1976), an edition of DreamWatch Bulletin (possibly issue 121 in December 1993) announcing the upcoming publication of the telesnaps in Doctor Who Magazine, and the discovery by Damian Shanahan of some clips from this story in an Australian TV Show called Perspective: C for Computer. Flight Through Entirety discussed The Power of the Daleks in Episode 11: Bum Wetting. Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Simon is @simonmoore72. The 500 Year Diary theme was composed by Cameron Lam. For now at least, 500 Year Diary shares a social media presence with Flight Through Entirety. So you can follow us on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at 500yeardiary.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll write next week's shownotes in a completely incomprehensible acrostic code. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. Flight Through Entirety will be back at Christmas in July to discuss The Return of Doctor Mysterio, and we'll be covering Peter Capaldi's final year on the show after that, concluding with Twice Upon a Time at Christmas. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be back a couple of days after the screening of the first two episodes of Season 1 of the Ncuti Gatwa Era on 11 May. In the meantime, you can hear our hot takes on the four episodes we've seen of Doctor Who's second RTD era. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first four episodes of Series 1; Episode 5 should be out in the next couple of weeks. Maximum Power will be back later in the year to talk about the final series of Blakes 7. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Ok, whatever, guys.   Join us as we discuss Leela's bloodlust, Terrance Dicks' love of the green, whether this story suffered from overspending at the end of the previous season, the absolutely terrible rich people that find their way into this story (and if they're really necessary), and the disappointing lack of a “Best of Fang Rock” story from Big Finish! We don't always live up to our own ideals. Doctor Who's main character is no exception: The Doctor's mantra is "never be cruel or cowardly" — created by writer Terrance Dicks as an off-screen guideline during the classic series until it became official in the new series, with Peter Capaldi's Doctor going so far as to remind Jodie Whittaker's of the catchphrase in his dying moments. But there have been numerous times in the Doctor's adventures that he's acted in ways that contravene this philosophy — sometimes coldly unattentive to his companions' feelings or even committing what could (and possibly should) be considered serious crimes. While all that is arguably good for the show — complicated heroes are better for drama, after all — it's worth calling out the character on his (or her) occasional hypocrisy, if only to point out the exceptions that prove the rule. And boy are there a lot of exceptions. Here are 10 times the Doctor was cruel or cowardly (or both!): 10. Calling Danny Pink "PE" 08:06 9. Shouting at the Sensorites 12:37 8. An A to Z of UK Television Drama

The year is 2003 and Earth's intrepid humans have managed to set-up several bases on the moon. There they face the implacable enemy that is the silence and darkness of space - a serious and apparently underestimated threat to the mental wellbeing of moonbase personnel... Created by Doctor Who's Barry Letts and Terrance DIcks this 6-part series from 1973 starred Donald Houston, Ralph Bates and Fiona Gaunt and had scripts from John Brason, John Lucarotti and Arden Winch. Moonbase 3 lacks Doctor Who's monsters and excitement and instead delights in technical details and psychological concerns. As such it is something of a hard SF curio which is widely regarded to be a misfire, even by Letts and Dicks themselves. The big question is what will Andy & Martin make of it from the vantage point of 2023, some 20 years after its characters, with their very 70's attitudes, were meant to be surviving on the moon? N.B. Having completed the first half of our second A to Z series, we are taking a mid-season break but will return in a few months with a drama beginning with the letter N...

Tread Perilously's annual Doctor Who months returns with the 20th Anniversary special, "The Five Doctors." When the Doctor discovers his previous selves are being plucked from time, he sets the TARDIS for Gallifrey. Meanwhile, on the Time Lord homeworld, The First, Second, and Third Doctors are reunited with friends and companions to brave the Death Zone -- a region of the planet host to deadly games and the Tomb of Rassilon, the greatest figure in Time Lord history. Will they discover he was a mad tyrant or will his wisdom aid the Doctors in defeating their true adversary?  Episode writer Terrance Dicks gets compared to Robert Holmes. His references to Doctor Who history throughout the story also get examined. Justin disagrees with pairing the Second Doctor and the Brigadier. He also doubts the show was a phenomenon in 1983. The pair discuss the unending 80s revival and Tegan Jovanka's new look for the special. The unfortunate role for Sarah Jane Smith in the episode, Susan's almost-unacknowledged place in Doctor Who history, and the Welsh countryside also earn some chatter. Erik plants the idea of Tom Hiddleston as a younger First Doctor in Justin's mind. Actor Richard Hurndall, who plays the First Doctor in the special, gets a review all his own. Justin evaluates Turlough and a proposed new "Five Doctors" quickly becomes "The Six-and-a-Half Doctors."

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on March 5th 2023 A few weeks ago on VISION ON SOUND we celebrated the life of the television writer TERRANCE DICKS and, in passing, we mentioned his writing colleague and mentor MALCOLM HULKE, who co-wrote several television scripts alongside TERRANCE, including contributions to THE AVENGERS and DOCTOR WHO, as well as writing a quarter of the stories (on television) which featured JON PERTWEE as the Doctor from 1970 to 1974, some of which are arguably amongst the most iconic from that era, when TERRANCE DICKS was working as the Script Editor on the series. As well as his work on DOCTOR WHO, MALCOLM also wrote scripts for the PATHFINDERS series, CROSSROADS, DANGER MAN, GIDEONS WAY, UNITED!, SPYDER'S WEB and many others, in a prolific twenty year career sadly cut short when MALCOLM HULKE died at the age of 54 years old way back in 1979. Perhaps because of this, his story, and his contribution to television writing as a whole, sometimes gets rather overlooked when people talk about the great television writers of the 1960s and 1970s. Nowadays MALCOLM HULKE is often cited as a huge influence on the careers of the writers that followed in his footsteps, not least because of his efforts as a member of the Writers Guild, and his book WRITING FOR TELEVISION which became a must-read volume for aspiring writers in that era. Recently, the freelance historian MICHAEL HERBERT, our guest in today's edition of VISION ON SOUND contributed an essay on the life and works of MALCOLM HULKE to the rather excellent book SURVIVAL TV: 1970s BRITAIN AND THE TELEVISION SERIES which was published and edited by RODNEY MARSHALL. MICHAEL is also working on a new biography of MALCOLM that he is hoping to complete this year, and he joined me to talk about the intriguingly complex life and work of this often complicated and iconic television writer. VISION ON SOUND

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 8, 2023 59:54

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 8th 2023 I like to think that some of the very best editions of VISION ON SOUND have come about when I just have a chat with fans of television about what it is that they like about the television programmes that they love. At the same time, some of our more regular listeners might recognise just how much I enjoy talking to writers, or talking about those writers who actually sit down and write, or sat down and wrote, the kind of television programmes that we admire and appreciate in these shows. So this week's show very much returns us to both of these things, really, in that we are going to be talking with a television fan about two of the television writers that caused him to venture out into the big wide world to discover just a little more about them amongst enthusiastic crowds of like-minded people. During the last quarter of 2022, our old friend on this show, STEVE HATCHER, was tangentially involved with the organisation of, and also attended, two events that celebrated the lives and works of two of television's great writers. The first of these took place at the RIVERSIDE STUDIOS in LONDON on October the 2nd last year, after being delayed for several years due to terrible things happening in the world, and was an event called TERRANCE DICKS, A CELEBRATION. It was organised, not unsurprisingly to celebrate the life of that writer much beloved by whole generations of DOCTOR WHO fans for the prolific number of novelisations he wrote based upon the television stories that were largely unavailable to them at the time, but also for his work on the show in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when he was the script editor on the programme, as well as being one of its most respected contributors. Although Terrance Dicks' career in television involved far more than just DOCTOR WHO, this is mostly what he is remembered for, despite his many other children's books, and other television shows to which he contributed. His death in 2019 was felt by many of his readers, and fans of his work alike, and he is much missed by all those who knew him, and many who never met him, but enjoyed his words. Perhaps his greatest legacy, however, was in passing on his love of reading and writing to the generations that followed him, and the fact that this event could be happening at all is a testament to the high regard in which he is still held. The second event took place at STEVE's more familiar territory of THE QUAD on November the 19th as part of DERBY FILM FESTIVAL, and was the NIGEL KNEALE: A CENTENARY CELEBRATION, which was another one-day event dedicated to the life of a much admired television writer who probably needs little introduction to regular listeners to VISION ON SOUND. But at least it means I get my almost obligatory mention of QUATERMASS into the show fairly early this week. Mind you, there was much more to NIGEL KNEALE than just QUATERMASS of course, and several events were organised last year to mark the centenary of the birth of this extraordinary storyteller. And whilst STEVE is by no means wanting to take more than his fair share of credit for his part in greasing the wheels that might just have helped both of these events run as smoothly as they apparently did, he did get to attend both, so it's very good of him to take the time to share his experiences with us, and share just a little bit of his own enthusiasm and admiration for both the people behind such events, and for the two writers being appreciated. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. He hates tyranny and oppression and anything that is anti-life. He never gives in and he never gives up, however overwhelming the odds against him. The Doctor believes in good and fights evil.
