Parents of under-fives in England are to be offered official advice on how long their children should spend watching TV or looking at computer screens. It comes as government research shows about 98% of children under two were watching screens on a daily basis - with parents, teachers and nursery staff saying youngsters were finding it harder to hold conversations or concentrate on learning. To discuss this further Nuala McGovern is joined by Kate Silverton, child counsellor and parenting author, and Professor Sonia Livingstone from the London School of Economics and author of Parenting for a Digital Future. In 2025 alone she walked at Paris Fashion Week, spoke at the United Nations about face equality and won 'Fashion and beauty influencer of the year' at the the UK and Ireland TikTok awards, all while managing a chronic illness. Nuala was also joined by psychotherapist and broadcaster Lucy Beresford who believes it may not just be women settling for less.Miss Marple and Poirot have been household names for decades but now one of Agatha Christie's lesser-known sleuths – Lady Eileen ‘Bundle' Brent - is finally getting her time in the spotlight. BBC Bitesize has launched a new series for schools tackling the problem, after new research with more than 400 teachers highlighted their growing concern about teenagers' relationship with online content. It shows most teachers believe critical thinking is now the most essential skill for young people, yet only a third feel able to teach it. A Christmas Mystery with a Twist!
Surprise! A bonus episode! We watched the recently released Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in the Benoit Blanc detective franchise written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daniel Craig. We get right into themes explored throughout the movie - the juxtaposition of Blanc and Father Jud and their differing views on faith, the temptation of power and wealth and how it preys on humanity, the many ways in which we tell stories about ourselves and each other, and the inherent power of collective judgement and shame. We delve deep into the complicated relationship between the Catholic Church and how it views and treats women, make parallels between Blanc and Poirot's view of justice and how room time as public shaming can be utilized (or not), praise the incredible lighting and cinematography multiple times, and debate whether this could have been made with a different religion at the core. We also talk about the many twists and turns the mystery takes throughout and realize the mastermind essentially accomplished their goal. Katy was influenced by The Murder of Roger Ackroyd too much, Carrie threw her notebook into the air, Maddy was thinking about Cats, and Mack pitches an academic paper. We also talk about how both Catholics and Rian Johnson love iconography and symbolism, are definitely charmed by Josh O'Connor, think the movie really balanced the buddy comedy and life philosophy aspects well, and love Bridget Everett so much. Listen to hear more about zombies, Captain Ahab, alter servers, Man v. Animal, The Dip, and Star Wars. Enjoy!TW: Catholicism, religious trauma, homophobia, misogyny, alcoholism, cults, fascism, alt-rightNOTES:CorvidCorgi Tumblr post about the themes of justiceCinematicnomad Tumblr post with GIFs of the lighting in the first Blanc and Father Jud scene in the churchClaire Willett Instagram, BlueSky

Hannah finally gets a break from Hastings… because he's not in this one. And honestly? Any book without Hastings starts at a 4-star baseline.Episode 148: Death in the Clouds by Agatha ChristieIt's always a good day when we get a Poirot mystery and a Hastings-free flight. Sam and Hannah dive into one of Christie's most delightfully absurd premises: murder above the clouds, suspicious passengers, and a wasp that definitely didn't do it.We talk about Christie's knack for misdirection, our running the Anti-Hastings Club lore, and why stories set in confined spaces (planes, trains, creepy mansions) just hit different. This is a perfect story to listen to as you unwind, because the intrigue is captivating, with the pace is calm and soothing, helping your mind drift into rest while the great detective does all the thinking for you. For Halloween, I am reading The Monkey's paw by, W. W. Jacobs. A classic chilling horror story of unintended consequences and the cautionary tale of being careful what you wish for. Written in 1902 and featured in Harper's Magazine, it is one of the classics of the genre, and even had the honour of being parodied in the Treehouse of Horror series on The Simpsons. This version features cosy fire sounds. If you'd prefer a version with no background sounds, scroll down to the previous episode to find it.
