What happens when a classic Agatha Christie story is reimagined with the memory of war lingering behind it? In the latest episode of Oh! What a Lovely Podcast, Jessica, Chris and Angus are joined by Kemper Donovan, author and host of All About Agatha, to discuss Agatha Christie's The Seven Dials Mystery and its recent Netflix adaptation. Unlike the familiar worlds of Poirot and Miss Marple, The Seven Dials Mystery blends mystery, comedy and espionage into a lighter and more adventurous story. The new adaptation embraces that spirit while reworking elements of the narrative for modern audiences, including giving the First World War a much greater role than it plays in the original novel.

Our month-long salute to mystery writing legends continues with the queen of crime herself - Agatha Christie. She wrote over sixty novels, dozens of short stories, and created two of the genre's most beloved sleuths - Hercule Poirot, the fastidious and brilliant Belgian detective, and Miss Marple, the kindly amateur investigator. We'll hear four of Dame Agatha's tales recreated for radio: "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" with Orson Welles as Poirot from The Campbell Playhouse (originally aired on CBS on November 12, 1939); "The Tragedy of Marsdon Manner" from Murder Clinic (originally aired on Mutual on October 6, 1942); and "The ABC Murders" and "Where There's a Will" from Suspense (originally aired on CBS on May 18, 1943 and February 24, 1949).

Gabe Poirot died on October 25, 2021, after cracking his skull in half on a Texas road, and for 18 days while his body lay in a coma that doctors said he likely wouldn't survive, his spirit was somewhere else entirely. Gabe sits down with Luke and Nate to walk through his extraordinary near-death experience, from the moment he left his body and was pulled up through the second heaven, teeming with spiritual warfare, to standing face to face with Jesus in the center of a city where every mountain, tree, river, and grain of sand was singing "worthy is the lamb." Jesus showed him the timeline of creation like a cloth, not linear but wrapped up, revealing a pre-Adamic earth, the rebellion of Satan, the dust from which humanity was formed, and the cross where heaven and earth were reconnected. Gabe also describes what he saw in the second heaven, a dimension just behind the visible world where fallen angels, hybrids, and watchers wage a civil war that has been raging since before humans walked the earth. He explains how these entities feed on unforgiveness, manipulate identities, and operate through familiar spirits that most people never detect. But the heart of his story is the overwhelming, inescapable love of Jesus, a love that existed before creation and exploded into existence just to know you by name. Gabe woke up on day 18, fully coherent in a body that should have been a vegetable, with a message from Jesus: tell my family who I really am, I'm coming soon, and I'm coming to get them. What happens when someone dies — and comes back with a testimony that reframes everything?Gabe Poirot experienced a fatal accident and a face-to-face encounter with Jesus. What he saw, understood, and carried back from that place is the substance of this conversation — and it reaches far beyond a near-death experience. This is revelation. About heaven, about the nature of Jesus, about the authority we carry in prayer, and about a love that is not abstract but deeply, personally proven. In this episode, Gabe recounts the moment he left his body and entered heaven, and what he saw when he stood before Jesus — His appearance, His majesty, and the understanding that heaven itself is personified in Him. He describes the spiritual warfare visible in the second and third heavens, what the wounds of Jesus communicate about His love for each of us individually, and what it means to see a human life reviewed from heaven's vantage point. The weight God places on how we love the least among us is not what most of us expect. The conversation moves into territory that will shift how you pray — the reality of time in heaven versus earth, the full scope of what the cross covers across eternity, and how spoken words and prayer move in the heavenly realm, shape timelines, and release divine activity. Gabe also speaks honestly about unforgiveness, the nature of faith, and what it looks like to trust God's timing when answers are slow in coming.Find RestSpace at: https://patreon.com/restspaceRelated MaterialsJoin the International Mentoring Community IMC, to facilitate a safe environment where like-minded people at any stage of their walk can enter into a deeper experience of Jesus. In February 1923, Howard Carter unearthed the tomb of Tutankhamun and fed the '20s zeitgeist an abundance of ancient-world dopamine hits. One writer who picked up on this wave was Agatha Christie, who would return to Egypt five more times in her famous stories. Here, however, she pits Hercule Poirot against a series of sudden deaths at the excavation site of Men-her-Ra's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. As tensions mount and another life hangs in the balance, Poirot must separate myth and whispers of a Pharoah's curse from human greed and murderous methodology. LTP sinks its feet into the soft, deceptive sands of Christie's pocket-size prose in this short episode. Summary@5:00; PIPES@23:00

Murder on the Abortion Express: Amy Littlefield on Who Killed Roe

Keen On Democracy

“They all did it. They're all guilty.” — Amy LittlefieldWho killed Roe? Amy Littlefield, the abortion access correspondent at The Nation and big time Agatha Christie fan, has written a true crime book about it. Literally. Killers of Roe treats the death of the constitutional right to abortion as a murder mystery in the Poirot or Miss Marple tradition, complete with suspects, motives, and a forensic reconstruction of the 50-year crime scene. The suspects have Christie-style names: the Racist (Jesse Helms), the Little Brother (James Buckley), the Devout Bureaucrat (Paul Herring), the Closeted Congressman (Bob Bauman), and of course Mr Hyde Amendment himself, Henry Hyde — six foot three, helmet of white hair, serial groper of women who ensured poor women lost access first. The Hyde Amendment is where the crime begins: 1976, a ban on federal funding of abortion. If you're poor, the Supreme Court ruled, that's your problem. The constitutional right exists, but don't expect anyone to pay for it. Surprise surprise. Black women, low-income women, women on Medicaid understood immediately. Democrats and mainstream pro-choice groups took longer to notice. By which time the damage was done — and the playbook established: chip away at access rather than try to ban it outright.Littlefield is more Miss Marple than Poirot — unassuming, persistent, sitting with her suspects for hours until they tell her why they did it. The devout bureaucrat, Paul Herring, spent their interviews trying to convert her to Catholicism. Henry Hyde made a pass at the president of Planned Parenthood during a commercial break on the Phil Donahue show. Bob Bauman — closeted, adopted, alcoholic — confessed to her that his anti-abortion politics may have come from identifying with the unwanted fetus, because that could have been him. These are complicated people doing terrible things for reasons they believe are righteous. And the ending? Littlefield steals it from Murder on the Orient Express. They all did it. Every suspect is guilty — including the Democrats who failed to defend poor women, and the pro-choice movement that didn't fight hard enough for the most vulnerable. Since the Dobbs decision in 2022: 59 excess pregnancy-associated deaths, 500 additional infant deaths, 22,000 additional births. The numbers aren't a Miss Marple mystery. The crime is ongoing. And Trump, who declared himself “very pro-choice” before he appointed the justices who drove the final nail in, is the ultimate opportunist — a fat, orange haired version of Hyde. Murder on the Abortion Express. They all did it. All the men, at least. Five Takeaways•       The Hyde Amendment Is Where the Crime Begins: 1976. A ban on federal funding of abortion. Poor women lost access first. Black women, women on Medicaid understood immediately. Democrats and mainstream pro-choice groups took longer to notice. By which time the playbook was established.•       The Anti-Abortion Movement Stole the Language of Civil Rights: White conservatives who didn't want to think about the harms of white supremacy found an escape valve: their own civil rights movement, with the fetus — almost always imagined as white — as the victim.•       The Suspects Are Complicated. The Crime Is Not: Henry Hyde groped women during commercial breaks. Bob Bauman — closeted, adopted, alcoholic — identified with the unwanted fetus. Paul Herring tried to convert Littlefield to Catholicism. Complicated people, terrible consequences.•       The Numbers Are Real: Since the Dobbs decision in 2022: 59 excess pregnancy-associated deaths. 500 additional infant deaths. 22,000 additional births. The crime is ongoing.•       They All Did It: Littlefield steals her ending from Murder on the Orient Express. Every suspect is guilty — including the Democrats who failed to defend poor women, and the pro-choice movement that didn't fight hard enough for the most vulnerable. All the men, at least. About the GuestAmy Littlefield is the abortion access correspondent at The Nation. Her new book is Killers of Roe: My Investigation into the Mysterious Death of Abortion Rights. She is based in Boston.References:•       Killers of Roe by Amy Littlefield — the book under discussion.•       The Hyde Amendment (1976) — the ban on federal funding of abortion that first stripped access from poor women on Medicaid.•       The Helms Amendment — Jesse Helms' restriction on abortion funding abroad through USAID, leading to thousands of preventable deaths worldwide.•       Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022) — the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.•       Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie — the structural model for Littlefield's conclusion: they all did it.About Keen On AmericaNobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. „Bude inšpektorom, aby už mal aké-také znalosti o zločine. Bude puntičkár a čistotný... má rád, keď sú veci v páre a tiež veci hranaté, nie okrúhle. A mozog má ako britva – bude v ňom mať sivé bunky... Dám mu veľkolepé meno... a čo keby som tohto svojho človiečika pomenovala Herkules? Bude malý a pritom Herkules – vynikajúce meno! Can Michael and his traveling companion cross the Ural Mountains with a storm on the horizon? Jules Verne, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.   Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.   One of the things that I love about The Classic Tales is the way folks who normally don't listen to the classics get hooked. I don't know how many times I've heard stories of people who normally wouldn't read Jane Austen, but now love Pride and Prejudice. Or after a few episodes of Poirot, want to read more of Agatha Christie's books. Or Charles Dickens, or Sherlock Holmes, the list goes on and on.   If you've got a friend who might be like this, here's what you do – scroll back through our feed and find one of your favorite episodes. Maybe it's a Jeeves and Wooster episode, or a Lupin mystery, something where afterwards, you were like, man, that was a good story. There's a ton of them! Share that episode with a friend. Now you've got something to talk about next time you see them.   And if you're wanting to try it out yourself, subscribe to the Audiobook Library Card, and gain access to everything. All the novels, short stories and novellas over the last 18 years – I mean, try listening to The Scarlet Pimpernel and not be hungry for more fun. For 9.99 a month, you get access to it all. It's the best audiobook deal on the internet.     Go to audiobooklibrarycard.com or follow the link in the show notes, and download and listen all you want.     And now, Michael Strogoff, Part 3 of 9, by Jules Verne     Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $9.99/month       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:
