We take Something Old (a Doctor Who story from the classic series) Something New (another story from the new series) and discuss them in the Something Who podcast
Paul, Giles, Rick and Richard are back to discuss two stories with with double trouble - last episode it was 5th Doctor adventure The Caves of Androzani from Season 21, which we've paired this time with 11th Doctor story The Rebel Flesh / The Almost People from Series 6. We'll decide whether they have have double the fun, or just provoke a double take. Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. Richard's other podcast "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" is currently on hiatus, but it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. Happy New Year from Something Who. Just before Christmas, on 23rd December 2024, a 90 minute colour version of the War Games was broadcast on BBC4 and made available in the BBC iPlayer. As with The Daleks before it, this 10 part black and white story has been edited into a shorter form and colourised to help bring it to life for a new generation. And Something Who has managed to secure a return visit from two of the key members of the team who made it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, and Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist. It's a great chat that goes into how and why a number of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved in editing and colorising a story form the 1960s as well as many of the delights involved. As a companion to our Something Who 101, which has clips from the first 5 years of our podcast, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who, which included our 100th episode. If you haven't heard us before, this will give you a flavour of our podcast. And if you have, here's a reminder. And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul and Giles, Rick rapidly became a fixture, and we had several appearances from Jess Jurkovic. Gav Rymill came back, Tim Burrows popped by for an episode and Simon Guerrier made a return visit. Richard had a nice chat with Jonn Elledge about his enthusiasm for Doctor Who. We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end. You may have noticed that our 100th episode came out earlier this year. This is a series of clips from the first 5 years of our podcast to capture the spirit of what we do. If you haven't heard us before, this will give you a flavour. And if you have, here's a reminder. Thanks to all the many contributors and guests over those 5 years. It's been a lot of fun (and a hell of a lot of editing). We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. (Note: If you tried to listen to this episode and it cut out suddenly around the 50 minute mark, it seems like something went wrong with the upload to the server. Sorry about that. Anyway, please try again now. Seems to be working properly following a reload) Once again, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who as we bring you a compilation from our episodes in 2023. And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul, Giles and Simon, we had a lot of guests this year, including Tim Burrows from The Missing Episodes podcast on our 10th anniversary discussion of the Omnirumour. We chatted to an actual Doctor Who writer in Matthew Jacobs, along with Vanessa Yuille, who together made the wonderful fan film Doctor Who Am I? Both Matthew and Vanessa were almost upstaged by a pneumatic drill, but saw the funny side. We spoke with Steve Manfred about his friendship and collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman. Elizabeth Morton spoke with us about her family connections to Doctor Who, as well as her writing career. And Benjamin Cook, Rich Tipple and Timothy K Brown discussed their work on colourising the first Dalek story for the 60th anniversary. Simon Guerrier joined us to chat about The Rescue and The Eleventh Hour, while providing lots of insight from his research into writer and story editor David Whitaker. Doctor Who Am I? is widely available in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-I-Blu-ray/dp/B0BGPYV3SD/, also on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-Daphne-Ashbrook/dp/B0B8Q734H3/, and ITVX https://www.itv.com/. You know how when you've been waiting months for a new episode of Something Who and then 3 turn up close together? Just over a week ago on 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, the highlight on BBC TV was The Daleks in Colour - a 75 minute reimagining of the first Dalek story specially colourised to help bring the story to life for a new generation. And less than a week later I had the good fortune to chat with 3 of the team responsible for making it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist and Timothy K Brown, Colourisation Artist. It's a fun chat that goes into storytelling, why some of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved and how they were overcome and what it's like to have your name in the same set of credits as William Hartnell. I noticed on listening this morning that I'd somehow truncated the opening sketch from episode 83, which would be less of a problem if it was my usual hackery, but since it was contributed by our guest, Simon Guerrier, I thought I should give you the chance to hear it in all its glory. It wasn't much of a cut, but at least it has a proper beginning now. Richard

In a slight departure for Something Who, here's an interview with Elizabeth Morton - actor and writer of historical fiction. Elizabeth talks to Richard about writing, and her most recent book. Here's part 2 of our Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special. On 29th March 2013, the DWO fan site said that 'a classic series related announcement' was coming and hinted that it was missing episodes related. In June of that year, the Bleeding Cool website ran a story suggesting that a large number of missing Doctor Who episodes had been found. Then Ian Levine tweeted about “three tons of evidence”. An e-mail, purportedly from a Radio Wiltshire DJ, but showing signs of mixed authorship was being passed between fans and excitement on the forums reached fever pitch. Lots of rumours were passed around and the number of episodes found was often said to be 90. Finally in October the Radio Times announced that newly-discovered lost Patrick Troughton episodes would be made available for digital download within a week. It was proof, surely, that all the rumours were true? But after The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear were released, that was it. And ten years later we still don't know the truth of it, and people still discuss their theories on forums. There's a name given to all this madness - the Omnirumour. And on the tenth anniversary of it gaining broad publicity within fandom, I'm with two fellow-sufferers - Tim and Giles. We've all spent more time than we care to recount pondering these matters. In this episode of Something Who we'll chew over what we know for sure, what can't be true and some of the things that might be true. And finally give you our personal opinions. Here's another of our special episodes. Over a year ago our podcast Twitter account was followed by Matthew Jacobs, the writer of the TV Movie. This was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure, as we'd just made an episode that featured the TV Movie, that had not been entirely complimentary. We became aware that Matthew was promoting an independent film called Doctor Who Am I? And recently Richard took the chance to watch it on DVD, though it's now widely available in the UK on a variety of platforms. So, excitingly, in this episode, Richard talks with Matthew and Vanessa Yuille who created the film together. This is funny and sometimes deep conversation about the nature of being a fan, with the added excitement of someone with a pneumatic drill attacking the outside of Matthew's apartment. We talk about Vanessa and Matthew's journey with the film, US fans and conventions, and we touch on Matthew's childhood connection with the with Doctor Who, when his father played Doc Holliday in The Gunfighters. Thanks to Vanessa and Matthew for sharing your stories and for the generous donation of your time. After our chat last time about the story The Doctor's Wife, we were contacted by long time fan and sometime Something Who listener Steve Manfred, who had something of a hand in the genesis of the story. Steve discusses his friendship with the author Neil Gaiman, how that led to him having a consultancy role on Neil Gaiman's two Doctor Who stories, and he corrects some of more egregious mistakes, as well as answering some of the questions we had posed. Thanks to Steve for sharing his stories and for the generous donation of his time. Here's the second half of our chat about a couple of stories that question whether the TARDIS is sentient: 1st Doctor story The Edge of Destruction (or Inside The Spaceship or even Beyond the Sun if you prefer), from Season 1, and 11th Doctor outing The Doctor's Wife from Series 6.
