In this episode Dylan is Joined by Rod Brown to talk about the first the two series of Counter Measures from Big Finish. 8 stories, 8 writers and a whole lot of Doccy Who. And as always we we answer the burning questions:What hasn't been flicked since Christmas day? What is Quatermass 2 meets The Underwater Menace? What can't Catholics Do?
Welcome to the first of two planned episodes about the 1966 Doctor Who serial The Celestial Toymaker. The episode eventually spawned a TV sequel ... in 2023, The Giggle. The novelizations of both stories were released in 1986 and 2024 respectively. Joining me this week is James Goss, author of the Giggle novelization, and we spend about 90 joyous minutes talking about both books. On the 300th Trap One Podcast Mark (@Mark_Dodyk), Frazer (@FelixFrazer) & Mark (@QuarkMcMalus) discuss the Target book of The Giggle, and James Goss (@gossjam) drops by to talk to us about the novelisation. Special guest reading by Hannah (@MrsSimonTemplar). You can order the book here.
Our coverage of the new Target novelisations reaches the third and final of the 60th anniversary specials. And to commemorate the occasion, we bring you a bumper episode with FOUR exclusive interviews. We chat with editor Steve Cole (who had the fun of typesetting the book to keep the contents secret), James Goss (who had a harrowing trip to see the episode in its early edit form), narrator Dan Starkey (who had to sing), and cover artist Anthony Dry (who's stepping back from the range).
From Skaro to Gallifrey, twelve episodes of one of the strangest seasons in Doctor Who's history. What did we think, what did we learn, and what are we most looking forward to? And, as always, who would we snog, marry or avoid? Notes and links Thanks to Bob Gilbey (@bobgilbey), Bryan says… (@bryan1981) and DJ Alpha-T (@DJ_AlphaT) for contributing their questions to this episode. As we well know, an anthology of short stories about the life of Ashildr was indeed published in 2015. It was called Doctor Who: Legends of Ashildr, and it includes stories by Justin Richards and James Goss. In the shownotes for last week's episode we discussed the fact that Heaven Sent was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2016, Doctor Who didn't receive any awards at all for its 2015 season. And, since we properly failed to mention it (or even remember it, you might say with some justification), the Jenny Laird Award goes to a season or era's most puzzling creative choice, and the Bonnie Langford goes to someone or something that is surprisingly and delightfully good. And more Our new podcast, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire, is your number-one source for our ill-considered opinions on the Second RTD Era. Here's our take on The Star Beast, and here's our take on Wild Blue Yonder. Our take on The Giggle will be out on Monday. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. Two episodes have been released so far: our commentary on the pilot episode Breakaway, and our commentary on the episode Force of Life. We're still planning to release the next episode after Christmas. Maximum Power continues its journey through Series C of Blakes 7. This week, Servalan kills a bunch of people in Children of Auron. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, yhey were joined by Tom Salinsky to watch all-time fan favourite Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
J Darrin Gross I'd like to ask you, James Goss, what is the BIGGEST RISK? James Gosse Well, a great question. And certainly, you know, the topic we were just touching on by the way, Darrin, I think, you know, oftentimes, so people are aware interest rate caps are often referred to as insurance policies for your interest rate. So I just found that an interesting aside, the biggest risk for us and this is a good question. You know, it's one of the things that If I'm honest, sort of this probably keeps me up at night more than other things. It's, you know, it's not making people aware of who we are, it's not not being able to get our message out to the right people. Right, that that's the risk I see. And again, we're obviously doing what we can to eliminate, mitigate, minimize all that kind of stuff. That said, you know, to us, that's the biggest risk, obviously, there's, there's other market forces and things like that, but just from what we can control. You know, to me that that's the biggest risk is we have something that when we explain it correctly, and when we have the right, people were talking to light bulbs go on. And when we have the discussion with lender partners, they go, of course, we want to do this with you, right? Of course we'd like so, but it's just a function of the risk is that we don't communicate it right. Or the risk is that we don't communicate it to the right audience or, you know, whatever the case. So, to us, it's a an exposure again, and I see this very much. So we've got a guy, I think the gentleman who set me up to this, Tim, is outstanding, and he's spends all of his time trying to figure out how do we make sure the market is aware of us has the right perception. And again, that's one of the reasons we were so pleased to join CCI M, their member Advantage program? Again, for us, it's a, I would say an exposure or, you know, making sure we get enough exposure is our Biggest Risk.

This week, we're joined by Adam Richard, shrunk to a microscopic size, and sent on a mission consisting mostly of ruthless moral self-examination. Meanwhile, somewhere else completely, a romcom is taking place. It's Into the Dalek. Notes and links Some of us are old enough to remember the constant television repeats of Fantastic Voyage (1966), in which a small submarine and its crew are shrunk to microscopic size to remove a blood clot from the brain of a scientist who is defecting to the West. The glamorous catsuited assistant to the crew's chief scientist is played by a young Raquel Welch. Richard identifies as the chief influences on this episode Fantastic Voyage and Rob Shearman's Doctor Who episode Dalek. (Which we discuss on Episode 137, To Mainsplain Aliens.) Of course, Peter Capaldi was most well known for his role in Armando Ianucci's political comedy series The Thick of It, in which he played Malcolm Tucker, the Prime Minister's sweary and frankly terrifying political enforcer. Ianucci will go on to create Veep, in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the hapless Vice President of the United States, and Avenue 5, starring Hugh Laurie as the captain of a luxury space cruiser which goes catastrophically off course. Moffat's first sitcom Joking Apart has been mentioned before on the podcast. Its main character also discovers how terrible he is as a person during the course of the first series. Class was a short-lived and ill-fated Doctor Who spinoff, written by Patrick Ness and set at Coal Hill Academy. Peter Capaldi appears as the Doctor in Episode 1, and the season itself is broadcast between Series 9 and Series 10 of Doctor Who. It is cancelled after the first eight-episode run. Trinity Wells, the American newsreader during the first RTD era, does have her very own Big Finish story: Driving Miss Wells by James Goss, which is part of the second Lives of Captain Jack box set, released in 2019. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Richard is @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. We'll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November. Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show. Plans are already well underway for our coverage of Series C later in the year, probably. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. We'll be back with a new episode this coming Friday, but while you're waiting for that, you can still catch our most recent episode, in which Joe and Nathan got together in person for the first time ever to watch the notorious Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Justice.
In this latest edition of Too Hot For TV Dylan is joined by Mark Cockram of the All of Time and Space podcast. Together they look at two creepy tales for Halloween in the audio format. First up it's the Seventh Doctor, Ace and Hex in Big Finish audio play 'Night Thoughts' by Edward Young. Then they look at the enhanced BBC audio book 'Dead Air' by James Goss which stars the Tenth Doctor. And as always they answer the burning questions :What would Poirot on LSD look like? Will Nick Briggs ever play Zippy ?Who is a frantic Arsehole? Plus a post credits scene bigger than anything Marvel has ever done.... honest!
What a peculiar thing this story is, but this episode contains much enjoyable laser gun action and one of THE GREATEST EVER LINES IN DOCTOR WHO AND WE DON'T KNOW WHY. James Goss has to choose his favourite thing about this episode and the story as a whole, which he will do with his trademark insight and wit. Host Toby Hadoke has neither of those things, so Lord knows what he'll be choosing. So finally the story starts to tell us what it is all about but it's still quite difficult to get to grips with quite what is going on here. Writer and wit James Goss has chosen a most beguiling slice of Doctor Who. But will host Toby Hadoke need much persuasion to choose the same best thing about the story as he has, or is the way to enlightenment fairly well signposted?
Well no-one is a big fan of this funny old story - well, apart from Doctor Who novelist and audio writer (and documentary maker and all sorts of other things) James Goss. Who could wish for a more charming advocate for this under-celebrated slice of 80s Who? And it is very 80s. So sit back and enjoy a (very) leisurely journey through some of Doctor Who's best ever corridors, as Chief Inspector Barlow off of Z-Cars inspires Tegan to become the best draughtsperson an airline could hope for. Just how different can two books written by two authors from a single script be? And can they both be any good, especially when the original story is so full of subtlety, pathos, and restrained acting? Tony Whitt, Alyson Fitch-Safreed, and Dalton Hughes discuss both the fan version by David Bishop and the “official” version by James Goss of Douglas Adams' script of THE PIRATE PLANET to find out, and the answers are…well, mostly harmless. In this wide-ranging Dalek-focused episode, we begin our discussion with a look at the 5-part Daleks! serial written by James Goss that is part of the Time Lord Victorious Doctor Who adventure, which is made clearer by referencing Blogtor Who's guide. We then chat about the multi-platform concept itself and what it may hold for the future of Who. A future, it would seem, that has a Doctor Who Magazine without a monthly comic serial and, perhaps, a bit searching for a new identity in these pandemic times. Ben reflects upon the TV Century 21 Daleks comic, which Goss's new story reminded him of and mentions the fan-created Second Empire Dalek comic. David brings up Pink For Your Actual Pterodactyl website's exhausivly detailed look at the History of the Pebble Mill Foyer and Ben expresses his appreciation of the site's examination of chairs in Doctor Who. Opening music is excerpted from Daleks! sound design by Steve Foxon. Closing music is "I Am A Dalek", the 1977 7" single by The Art Attacks. We recorded this episode on 9 March 2021.

What better way to celebrate 42 episodes of The Sirens of Audio than with a tribute to Douglas Adams, the man who made he mark with audio drama, namely, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series way back in 1978. Not only do we chat about Hitchhiker's but we chat about looking back at Doctor Who season 17 with the aid of age and hindsight, the various releases of Shada with a focus on the 2003 Big Finish release, and we review the audiobook version of Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen, written by Douglas Adams and James Goss and read by Dan Starkey. This week, Deb Stanish of Verity! joins us to banter about news of a transmediatastic multiplatformeriffic project called “Time Lord: Victorious” which will span novels, comics, audio and escape rooms (somehow) and may be just the thing to fill the void left by No Doctor Who for the next little while! This episode sees the conclusion of Jon and guest James Goss's look at Hammer's Quatermass 2. In a wide-ranging discussion that encompasses everything from Alan Plater to Flesh Gordon, they witnesses the trauma of Sid James being shot in the face (apparently), admire the inventive use of filler text and investigate if this really is the first use of the suffix '2' in a film title. James also tells us about interviewing Nigel Kneale for his student magazine...
Donlevy's back! This episode sees the first of a two-part chat between Jon and producer and writer James Goss as we look at how he first discovered Quatermass and a slightly wider discussion on Nigel Kneale's influence on Doctor Who (including an interesting conspiracy theory concerning The Invisible Enemy), before we make the two-hour trip from London to Carlisle, via Hemel Hempstead, to begin our look at Hammer's Quatermass 2 and wonder what Donlevy's Quatermass must be like at the Rocket Group's Christmas Party. On the way we'll look at how conspiracies must seem efficient, and the terror of charm and the fear of Communist colonisation. Oh, and what actually is Broadhead's first name anyway? Jon also gives a shameless plug to the BFI's Projecting the Archive strand, and in case you were wondering, the name of the actor James was so impressed with is John Van Eyssen, probably best know for playing Jonathan Harker in Hammer's first Dracula film, in 1958.
In today's episode, we bring you our recent interview with James Goss an expert in electric motor design and CEO of Motor Design Ltd the leading developer of design software for electrical machine design in the high-performance automotive sector. Listen as James describes what Motor Design Ltd does, and how their software helps vehicle manufacturers design the electric motors in their new EV and hybrid offerings. What new markets are starting to use their technology to design next-generation motors, and what his take is on the vehicles from larger established OEMs being less efficient as the vehicles from companies such as Tesla and Hyundai. If there are any other subjects you would like us to cover or guests you would like us to interview please let us know via our website, or on any of our social media pages. Ben and David talk about Scratchman! It has been over forty years since Tom Baker and Ian Marter had lunch in the pub and came up with the idea for a Doctor Who movie in which our hero would battle the Devil. Does the novel based on these boozy mid-1970s ideas that Tom wrote with James Goss hold up? How does it compare to what has been previously published about the script? Listen in as David discusses listening to Tom read his story and compare notes with Ben who read it himself off the printed page. Opening music is from Simon Power's sound design for the Scratchman audio book. Closing music is from the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil."
Our long-delayed book review, Doctor Who and The Krikkitmen by Douglas Adams and James Goss.
"Weirdos!" It’s not often that a Doctor Who story reviews Jim and Martin but this is the topsy-turvy world of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. It’s all a bit of a circus as the Ringmaster puts the 'c' into 'rap', a foxy artiste blames it on the moonlight and the Chief Clown grins all the way to the emergency dentist. Ace is victim to some violent conducting and the Doctor prances, prestidigitates and experiences a warm burst on his exit. Peaceful hippy Bellboy makes killer robots, Deadbeat mopes around waiting for Lovejoy to turn up and Mystic Morgana wishes she’d never agreed to a fan meet-and-greet. Captain Cook bores himself to death, a new stand-up dies on stage and Peggy Mount proves to be the Worst Dinner Lady in the Galaxy. So did Jim and Martin enjoy the roar of the greasepaint and the smell of the non-existent crowd? Or were they reaching for their zero score cards? Listen to find out and to hear the lads review the Tom Baker and James Goss novel, Scratchman.

Synopsis This title was released in July 2017. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until September 30th 2017, and on general sale after this date. "Ianto really shines in this story and Gareth David-Lloyd gets to play him with a range I think was only started in the TV show. 10/10" "‘The Office of Never Was’ is a welcome return of Ianto Jones to the Big Finish world. Gareth David-Lloyd has turned in an excellent performance of a challenging script. Goss has taken a daring move with the character and crafted the perfect environment for it. This is an essential Torchwood story for your collection. – 9/10 " "This story goes right to the heart of what Torchwood are and what they do, it deals with the consequences of those actions almost like no other story before it and lays Ianto’s soul bare – Ianto always was the softer side of Torchwood, this explores how he deals with the contradictions in his job and how those contradictions can devastate the lives of those who Torchwood sometimes only think of as all in a days work." "For me, Ianto was always the unsung hero of Torchwood Cardiff. From his humble beginnings serving tea to Jack and the gang, to being a badass, to being murdered in Children of Earth, Ianto was always dependably brilliant; and James Goss makes sure you know it in this story." There’s an empty office block in Cardiff. That’s nothing special – plenty of businesses go under, clear out, cease to exist. All that’s left behind is an empty building. But there’s one office block that refuses to be forgotten about. There have been stories about that building - strange lights, funny goings on, faces pressed up against the glass. Enough to get the locals worried. Enough to ask Torchwood to get involved. It’s Friday night. Ianto Jones has better things to do with his time than look round a haunted building. But he goes anyway, and it turns out that The Office has been waiting for him. Torchwood contains adult material and may not be suitable for younger listeners. What a fascinating discussion this week's Doctor Who episode lends itself to. Join Deb, Erika, and Tansy as we discuss women who are allowed to fail and still be heroes, the sexual politics of Romans, the Doctor's (possible?) impatience, Bill's outlook on history and its denizens, Nardole as a "space tourist", and much more. Erika, of all people, even has a cracktastic fan theory about the next season of the show. Incredibly unlikely, but kinda fun, depending on your outlook. What did you think about this story? Was it slight? Were the stakes high? Was the monster the point? Was the doctor impatient or irritable or something else? What's up with Missy? SO MANY QUESTIONS. Please feel free to play in the comment section like it's one big happy fandom sandbox. ^E Also covered: Tansy Kickstarts a fabulous speculative fiction anthology of diverse, challenging stories about gender and AI, which we have all backed, and you should too! attends the Australian National Science Fiction Convention and won a Ditmar Award for Best Novella or Novelette for "Did We Break the End of the World?", from Defying Doomsday! A scientific impossibility. A mystery to be solved. Of course, River Song expects to be consulted. She expects her valuable knowledge and experience will help the crew of the Saturnius unlock the strange phenomenon that has appeared in Earth's solar system. But what River doesn't expect is a stowaway. An infuriating little man, calling himself the Doctor. 2.2 Five Twenty-Nine by John Dorney River has made a terrible discovery. Billions of lives hang in the balance. But if she can save just a few, then it might just help her solve the conundrum of Earth's destruction. A race against Five Twenty-Nine? 2.3 World Enough and Time by James Goss When it comes to bringing down corrupt and exploitative regimes, there is no-one quite like River. Until she arrives at Golden Futures and discovers that someone else has already taken on her job. Someone with almost as much style and panache as herself. The Doctor is about to get the shock of his lives. 2.4 The Eye of the Storm by Matt Fitton The Great Storm of 1703 approaches. The fate of planet Earth hangs in the balance. Episode 37 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast In this episode of the Alhambra Podcast, the trio of Brett (@Mavic_Chen) and Liam (@djNezumi) and Legeon (@legeonhenderson) reunite and bring an enjoyable hour (or more) discussion and sci-fi silliness for the month of May 2016. We started off the podcast with Doctor Who and Big Finish news, thanks to www.doctorwhonews.net for the up to date DW news! We discuss the news of Big Finish releasing the first full cast audio for Torchwood. Briefly discuss of the Dark Shadow's 50th Anniversary release. Then we discuss the work of Fantom Films work with previous audio commentaries, The Web of Fear and Enemy of the World, and what they have in store for Doctor Who commentaries on some orphaned episodes. From one Romana story to another, we discuss Gallifrey: Enemy Lines - Series 8, written by David Llewellyn, and how this one story possibly undoes Intervention Earth from series 7. Going from one Doctor Who spin-off to another, we look at episode #2.3, Torchwood: Ghost Mission, written by James Goss, featuring Tom Prince as Sergeant Andy Davidson. Form current releases, we look back at the Cyberman series 1 and 2, as Big Finish has released them in one big box set. As great as a series as Cyberman is, Liam and Brett do discuss a downer regarding this re-released boxed set. A BIG thanks to Big Finish for the updated Big Finish app! It is user friendly, and just amazing! Between that and Brett finding the Fantom Film audio commentaries for Web of Fear and Enemy of the World, Brett needed some time alone. :) We change our minds for the audio only release for the month of June, from The Daemons (3rd Doctor Classic Series) to fit in with the Fourth Doctor Adventure release for the month of June, The Trouble with Drax, to the last story in The Key to Time series, The Armageddon Factor (4th Doctor Classic Series). Audio Only Review list - Spearhead from Space (recorded, post-production needed); The Web Planet (recorded in the month of June); The Armageddon Factor (recorded for June, sometime in June or July); Dragonfire (to be recorded in July); The Power of Kroll (to be recorded in August); finally The Daemons (to be recorded in September). 'A very very good box set... Alex Kingston gives River her all... more layers to her character... 9/10 Sweetie.' Planet Mondas 1.1 The Boundless Sea by Jenny T Colgan River Song has had more than enough excitement for a while. Deciding the universe – and her husband – can look after themselves, she has immersed herself in early 20th century academia, absorbed in writing archaeological theses. But when a mysterious tomb is found in a dry, distant land, excitement comes looking for River. Can Professor Song stop any more members of the expedition from dying? What deadly secrets lie buried within the crypt? And will British Consul Bertie Potts prove to be a help, or a hindrance? 1.2 I Went to a Marvellous Party by Justin Richards River Song always enjoys a good party, even when she's not entirely sure where or when the party is taking place. But the party she ends up at is one where not everything – or indeed everyone – is what it seems… Being River, it doesn't take her too long to go exploring, and it doesn't take her too long to get into trouble. The sort of trouble that involves manipulating other civilisations, exploitation, and of course murder. River is confident she can find the killer. But can she identify them before anyone else – or quite possibly everyone else – gets killed? 1.3 Signs by James Goss River Song is on the trail of the mysterious, planet-killing SporeShips. Nobody knows where they come from. Nobody knows why they are here. All they do know is that wherever the SporeShips appear, whole civilisations are reduced to mulch. But River has help. Her companion is a handsome time-travelling stranger, someone with specialist knowledge of the oddities and dangers the universe has to offer. For Mr Song has a connection to River's future, and he would never want his wife to face those perils alone… 1.4 The Rulers of the Universe by Matt Fitton As shocking secrets are exposed, and a grand plan for the universe is revealed, River decides it's time she took control of events once and for all. Out in deep space, a clandestine society faces off with an ancient and powerful alien force – but, for River, there's an added complication. The Eighth Doctor has been caught in the middle, and she must make sure her future husband can arrive at his own destiny with all his memories – not to mention his lives - intact… Written By: Jenny T Colgan, Justin Richards, James Goss, Matt FittonDirected By: Ken Bentley Cast Alex Kingston (River Song), Paul McGann (The Doctor), Alexander Vlahos (Bertie Potts), Alexander Siddig (Marcus Gifford), Imogen Stubbs (Isabella Clerkwell),Gbemisola Ikumelo (Prim), Charlotte Christie (Daphne Garsington), Alisdair Simpson (Colonel Lifford), Oliver Dimsdale (Archie Ferrers), John Banks (Professor Straiton), Letty Butler (Spritz), John Voce (Jenkins), Aaron Neil (Sanukuma Master) and Samuel West (Mr Song)

#doctorwho @gossjam #tindogpodcast @DWBBCBooks The Doctor takes Romana for a holiday in Paris – a city which, like a fine wine, has a bouquet all its own. Especially if you visit during one of the vintage years. But the TARDIS takes them to 1979, a table-wine year, a year whose vintage is soured by cracks – not in their wine glasses but in the very fabric of time itself. Soon the Time Lords are embroiled in an audacious alien scheme which encompasses home-made time machines, the theft of the Mona Lisa, the resurrection of the much-feared Jagaroth race, and the beginning (and quite possibly the end) of all life on Earth. Aided by British private detective Duggan, whose speciality is thumping people, the Doctor and Romana must thwart the machinations of the suave, mysterious Count Scarlioni – all twelve of him – if the human race has any chance of survival. But then, the Doctor's holidays tend to turn out a bit like this. Featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker, City of Death is a novel by James Goss based on the 1979 Doctor Whostory written by Douglas Adams under the pen-name David Agnew. City of Death is one of the best-loved serials in the show's 50-year history and was watched by over 16 million viewers when first broadcast.
