February 2025 Book Club: This month, we're reviewing a pair of books from a range we've not visited before - the Quick Reads range - as we catch up with the Tenth Doctor & Martha in “Made of Steel” & “Revenge of the Judoon,” both by the legendary author Terrance Dicks. Made of Steel was first published in March 2007 while Revenge of the Judoon was released in February 2008. Both were first published in paperback but are also now available in e-book form. Happy reading! Our reader this month is Dan Hanly, who is the author of The Great Leap and can be reached at Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok & Facebook. Learn more about the Quick Reads program here, including a new group of titles released on World Book Day, Wed. April 23rd, 2025. Which of Pete's selections will force Mark to look back on his life choices like Ebenezer Scrooge? Is the 45 - 60 minute long episode of Doctor Who a dead medium? Why is Mrs Flood emblematic of a problem plaguing pop culture? And who trapped that bee inside a theramin? Doktors.

Their discussion takes in the cultural milieu that led to the decline of Doctor Who, showrunner sectarianism, green goo, how we watch The One Show, and whether the Doctor should always have a British accent. Also: Which book of J.R's is too hot for publishing? Some fans have called this story cursed, and after losing two-thirds of our first attempt to record this episode and then having to remount it three weeks later, we agree! (Is this what it felt like to make SHADA? They both have Denis Carey in them, so…maybe HE'S the curse?) Come join Tony Whitt, Alyson Fitch-Safreed, and Dalton Hughes as we try to endure this book without having to call an ambulance. (Just listen and that attempt at a joke will make more sense. Hello, sweeties! After a short break, Ken & Mike are starting a new season of "Prepare the Timelash!!" with an in-depth look at the adventures of one River Song! We start with River Song's first televised adventure with the Doctor (or is it the last? Timey-wimeyness!) in "Silence of the Library/Forest of the Dead". If you're a regular listener, welcome back - and if you're new, welcome aboard, as we fully move into some great stories and the era of Modern Doctor Who! (We'd tell you more details about this episode, but ... spoilers.)
Send us a Text Message."Pip will have the salmon"In a raucous series finale, Ben and Mark welcome actor, presenter, and host of Mikey & Who, Mikey Smith to tease his upcoming project with David Burton, and submit his five choices for the Tinsel Tunnel.Mikey's choices call into question the veracity of Doctor Who actor anecdotes, provide marriage counselling to Pip and Jane Baker, reappraise a lost incarnation of the Doctor, and interrogate what are we actually doing here exactly?Listen all the way to the end for Ben and Mikey reconciling their historic feud.WARNING: Contains an AWFUL impression of Billy Connolly.Support the Show.Follow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookBuy us a pint
Send us a Text Message. In the penultimate episode of In the Timelash season 1, Ben and Mark invite Emmy award winner and host of Doctor Who: Too Hot for TV, Dylan Rees to submit his five items to be flung into Paul Darrow's Spangly Opening.Dylan's choices raise questions like - Who's been following Dylan from 73 yards away? Which Doctor Who personality is coming round your house to do something unspeakable to your Target collection? And which RTD creation is the greatest cartoon character of all time?Support the Show.Follow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookBuy us a pint
And with this bonus episode, Ken & Mike close out Season 3 of "Prepare the Timelash!!" with a look at a Fourth Doctor classic, "Pyramids of Mars". They get into a lot with this one, including why the Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane pair is so darn good, why Sutekh the Destroyer is one of the best villains ever to grace the show, and Robert Holmes' predilection for poachers in a story. Did they save the best story for last in this season? Listen and find out!
Ben and Mark invite Joe Ford from Hamster With A Blunt Penknife to submit his five choices to go into the Timelash. Mammary madness, unconvincing urchins, aural wallpaper, violent content and performative negativity all face the Timelash, but will they all depart with a scream?Joe's five choices lead us to try and answer the questions:Can Doctor Who be sexy? Should Doctor Who be sexy? Is it cheeky to write yourself roles in a Big Finish audio? What does a Doctor Who convention smell like?Support the showFollow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookBuy us a pint
It's the end, but the moment ... yeah, you get the idea. This month, Ken & Mike wrap up Season 3 of Prepare the Timelash!! with a look at two Big Finish stories with god-like foes - "The Lovecraft Invasion" and "The Triumph of Sutekh". They also reflect on all the stories that they've covered throughout this season, and talk a bit about their trip to Gallifrey One this past February. There's a ton to dig into, so have a listen!
Mark is next up to submit five things they don't like about Doctor Who to be thrown In the Timelash. It's a wide-ranging discussion that takes in some heavy topics, the brave new world of online fandom, worldwide release windows, and whether a delivery driver can scale the height of Colin Baker's gate. Will all five of Mark's choices get sent on a one-way trip to the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Ness? And when was the last time that Britain was truly great?Support the showFollow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookBuy us a pint
Here on Doctor Who Literature we take a brief scheduled break from the novelizations. It's still May 1986, and not only did we get the Doctor Who novelization of Timelash, but now we get the debut of the short-lived Companions of Doctor Who line. First up, Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma. Which doubles as the first original Doctor Who novel. Many more would follow. Joining me to break this one down is Doctor Who novelist Dale Smith. We'll also discuss Dale's recent Black Archive volume on The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. If you enjoyed this episode, please follow, subscribe, and rate us! The plot, the acting, the production, the effects - all you need to know is that the time crystals were delayed by an hour.
Recorded live at Gallifrey One in Los Angeles last week, Simon Guerrier -- author of the magisterial new biography of David Whitaker -- sits down with me, and Mark from Trap One -- to discuss one of Doctor Who's more controversial episodes... A Hamster With a Blunt Penknife - a Doctor Who Commentary podcast
Join Rod, Joe, Steven & Jo as we traverse Titan 3, Jaconda, Telos, Varos, Killingworth, Seville, Karfel & Necros and take in the sights of acid baths, stabbings & beheadings and even have time to slide down the Timelash to some rock and roll.
The games are afoot! And so while Mike & Ken are wrapping up this season of Prepare the Timelash!!, they take two last looks at The Toymaker after "The Giggle" - one in novel form, with "Divided Loyalties", and one in audio form, with the Season 23 missing adventure "The Nightmare Fair". Both are mixed bags, to say the least, but both have some interesting concepts ... some, though, are realized far better than others. Also, stay tuned for some news on this year's Gallifrey One, which Ken & Mike will be attending, and some news on the next topic they'll be covering for Season 4!
The Beast and his Armies shall rise from the Pit, and ... apologies, did you want to listen to a podcast? Because in this bonus episode of "Prepare the Timelash!!" (which should've been part of our regular season, to be honest), Ken & Mike are talking about the Tenth Doctor 2-parter, "The Impossible Planet / The Satan Pit". Which - spoilers! - they enjoyed a lot more than they expected. In this episode, they discuss why neither are huge Ten/Rose fans, having a story where faith and trust is more important than science and intellect, and the Lovecraftian influence on this story (and why the Doctor is not a typical Lovecraft protagonist.)
This episode: The novelisation is worse than the serial, which may surprise some Timelash reactionaries. Quote of the episode: "I would like to record at least twice a month."
It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for…by the Three Who Rule who are ringing in Canada Day weekend by wringing out the very last vestiges of the Timelash, our popular(?) time-filling exercise in Doctor Who reflection.
