This episode is all about being true to yourself in a world that tells you to conform, as today we are joined by the star of the new dramatisation of the record breaking game, Halo, it's Olive Gray! Olive started their career at the age of 10 in The Story of Tracy Beaker (which we were all obsessed with, right?!?) before starring in the BAFTA nominated TV drama, Save Me, playing a teenage victim of sex trafficking, opposite Suranne Jones and Lennie James. And now Olive is playing Commander Miranda Keyes in Halo, which lands on Paramount+ this week after selling more than 82 million copies worldwide, and grossing more than 6 billion dollars as a computer game. Get ready for Olive's GCSE Bitesize breakdown about Halo in this episode, so if you aren't familiar with the franchise already - we got you! Aside from talking about their breakout role in the franchise, Olive talks about identity: from their racial identity, to being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, to their pronouns, and having ADHD. We need more open and honest conversations about all aspects of our identity, and in particular neurodiversity, so I hope you either feel seen, understood or enlightened by this episode. I also hope you keep on listening and finding the power to Reign in your own lives. If you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxx
In a special edition of This Cultural Life from the Hay Festival, Dame Jacqueline Wilson is John Wilson's guest with an audience of readers young and old. One of the best-loved children's writers of all time, she has written more than a hundred books, including The Story of Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather, both of which were adapted as hugely popular CBBC series. The childhoods depicted by her are usually far from rosy - she's tackled divorce, depression, death, bullying, abuse, abandonment and homelessness. Despite their themes, or maybe because of them, they are huge bestsellers. She reveals the film, play and places that have inspired her work. Happy Monday folks!!!! This week I'm joined by best pal and housemate Holly K to discuss watching the new Tracey Beaker on BBC, which is a far cry from the beloved OG series. We also discuss MEXIT aka the big news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially stepping back from the royal family. We discuss the absolute TRAVESTY that was the Golden Globe nominations which had a severe lack of diversity and a felt absence of Michaela's Coel's masterpiece 'I May Destroy You' which further highlights the institutional and covert racism within the industry. The reaction to this was massive! We were so delighted to talk to legendary children's author Jacqueline Wilson on Weekend Breakfast. Jacqueline is famous for The Story of Tracy Beaker, Hetty Feather, and over a hundred other popular children's books. Love Frankie is Jacqueline’s latest release (her 111th book!) and features her first ever gay romance. The book follows the story of a 14-year-old girl called Frankie, who lives with her single-parent mum and two sisters. "I wanted to show that if there's any young person worrying about their sexuality, that it's just perfectly normal and you don't have to make a big deal about things." Love Frankie is out now and has been getting rave reviews, it has been described as moving and powerful depiction of first love. Geek Girl in the News looks at the awesome or not so awesome news that will make you go either: "YAY" or "OMG I can't believe that." The latest and greatest geek girl news from April 2020 covers the latest film release to get delayed, Ezra Miller literally choking out a fan, our newest celeb to stan, Olivia Munn, Land O' Lakes changing their problematic logo (yay!), beloved author Jacqueline Wilson coming out, Cyberpunk 2077 is the game we love to love for yet ANOTHER reason, and, of course, it wouldn't be a Geek Girl in the News without some adorable Animal Crossing news. As sad as it is, Sony have released some expected news that Spider-Man is going to be delayed. We mean, it makes SENSE, because filming schedules are all up the left, eh!? So this is not completely unexpected news and honestly we're waiting to hear what else is getting that push back. And as if we needed another reason not to go see the next Fantastic Beasts, video footage has been released (and since release taken away) of Ezra Miller choking out a fan in Iceland. Totally unprecedented and really unprovoked attack that had to have the club bouncers literally pull them off a female fan. Um, yeah, this is NOT okay. Totally fucked up. We're disappointed in this act. But you know who we do 100% STAN!? Olivia Munn! She's Hearthstone's latest lover who's on a quest to Legend (and reached it!). We might not 100% know who she is all the time, but honestly now we're on a mission to binge everything Munn. We're also loving Land O' Lakes new logo. Removing the cultural appropriation is a move we can absolutely get behind. We only wish they'd used this as a learning opportunity around WHY it's such a problem to use Native American imagery to sell your not native products. Of course, the MAGA-loving crowd aren't behind the move and are boycotting the company. Boo-hoo, see ya later. Then we're headed to British territory where we talk about the beloved author, Jaqueline Wilson, known for the Tracy Beaker series of books has publically come out. While she never considered herself "in the closet," when celebs take a more vocal stand for LGBTQ+ issues, it helps normalise and grows acceptance. We're also super excited for her new book, Love Frankie, due out in bookstores this August! Will you be getting it!?? Okay, honestly, is Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red the best game and developer out there right now? We literally cannot with how much we're loving how much wokeness is going into this game. The latest news? A gang led by a woman who pays her sex workers a legit wage and stands up for their protection. SEX WORKERS RIGHTS MATTER!!! Last, but definitely not least, we're getting all sorts of excited over Elijah Freaking Wood visiting someone's island in Animal Crossing to sell some turnips. So wholesome. So good. We love this!! Hey Brie Larson, we sometimes get good turnip prices. Wanna come hang? What’s your take on these news articles? OH HEY BY THE WAY. We're recording our episodes LIVE on Twitch now! Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the Children's Laureate Jacqueline Wilson. She's won just about every award going for children's fiction and, in a career spanning more than 30 years, has written more than 80 books. Then she began to pitch ideas for a new teen magazine, Jackie, her stories were bought and she quickly became a staff writer. But she was 50 before she devised her most famous creation, Tracy Beaker. Tracy is a streetwise, feisty girl growing up in the competitive world of a children's home, who never loses the hope that one day her mum will come back for her. The book was a breakthrough for Jacqueline and its subsequent television adaptation introduced her to a mass audience. In 2002 she was awarded an OBE for services to literacy.
