A lot of dog trainers have come on the show, but most of them didn't start out wanting to be dog trainers, or even realize that was an option until later in life. Today, however, the script is flipped as I'm joined for perhaps the first time by a dog trainer who actually grew up wanting to be a dog trainer! Of course, life still had plenty of surprises in store for trainer Kari Joly, and despite being the thing she wanted to be as a kid, it wasn't a straight path to get there, nor does it look exactly like she thought it would. Join us today as she shares how she went from wanting to train guide dogs to helping train family dogs, as well as a discussion about confidence, humility, and the importance of celebrating the small wins. In this episode, Nikki and Gray talk with Family Paws expert, Bethany Cunningham, CPDT-KA on preparing Gray to the TWINS he and his wife are expecting in November. Family Paws provides specialized programs and support for new and expecting parents with dogs. Family Paws Parent Education | Dog Training for Baby InteractionsSince 2002, their goal has been to increase safety and reduce stress in homes with young children and family dogs. They help to answer the question “How can we prepare our dog for life with baby/children?”Jennifer Shryock, owner and founder of Family Paws, saw a need for resources and information to support new and expecting families with dogs. While answering calls for a German Shepherd rescue Jennifer heard firsthand the concerns, challenges, and heartache families experienced. From fearing how their dog would accept a new addition to a serious bite to a toddler, families needed more support and resources. Recognizing this need led Jennifer down the path to developing this very important niche, dog and baby/toddler dynamics and safety through Family Paws. We strongly believe that education empowers, and our goal is to increase safety and decrease stress for all family members through education and realistic expectations.Bethany is Family Paws Program Development & Educator Program Co-Instructor. She is a mom, professional dog trainer, and professional photographer. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer with a focus on behavior modification in pet dogs.Bethany has a deep love of animal behavior, child development, and visual arts, and is delighted by the fact that her multiple roles with Family Paws Parent Education bring all of those passions together. Today's Topic: The holidays are coming! And with that, there is a tremendous amount of preparation that families across the globe are making, whether it's the food, the drinks, the travel, or the decorations, to ensure that the time we get to spend with our loved ones, especially after everything we've all collectively gone through in the past two years, is absolutely memorable. With that said, have you thought about your dog, or the youngest and most vulnerable members of the family (babies and toddlers), and what you'll do to ensure that their time is as special, safe, and merry as it will be for everyone else? That's why we invited the leading expert on dog and baby/toddler dynamics, and the founder of FamilyPaws.com, Jennifer Shryock, to the pod, to discuss the importance of communication, dog body language, games that children and dogs can play together, and why management in the home plays such a huge role to ensure safety and harmony in the home for ALL family members. Guest Bio: Jennifer Shryock is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) and the proud owner of Family Paws™ LLC in Cary, North Carolina. In 2000, her family adopted their first German shepherd rescue dog. That inspired her work with the rescue organization as a counselor and trainer for families with babies or young children that found their situation overwhelming and were often on the verge of surrendering their cherished dog. Once she recognized that new and expecting families needed support and education, she began developing resources for the Family Paws Parent Education, which resulted in the development of two highly-endorsed international programs:Dogs & Storks® for expecting and adopting familiesDogs & Toddlers™ for families with babies three months of age and olderThrough these programs, she's mentored and supported hundreds of dog trainers worldwide, and she continues to support local and distant families. She's written and spoken extensively about these topics in national media, such as The Wall Street Journal and Martha Stewart Living, as well as on appearances on television and radio shows. Her mission is to help create a world in which families with children and dogs can live safely and harmoniously as a family unit. We talk about what to look for as red flags for potential problems between kids and dogs, how we can help to educate the public about dog bite safety with children, and even discuss the rare, but serious topic of predatory behaviors directed at infants. Her two programs, Dogs & Storks® and Dogs & Toddlers™ have been featured in national media such as The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart LIVING along with many TV and radio appearances. In 2000 The Shryock family adopted their first German Shepherd Rescue dog. Subsequently Jennifer became involved with the rescue organization as a counselor and trainer finding herself supporting families with babies or young children who, overwhelmed by the challenges of their situation, were often on the verge of surrendering an otherwise beloved dog.As a Mother, dog behavior consultant and teacher… Jennifer recognized a need for support and education for these families and began building resources for new and expecting families through her own business Family Paws. Far too often at the UNC Trauma Center we see children injured by a family's beloved pet or a neighborhood dog. In this episode we interview two behavioral veterinarian specialists of NC State University's School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Sara Bennett and Dr. Margaret Gruen share their tips on how to prevent dog bites and how to understand the language of dogs so that we can be aware of the signs that they may be about to attack. They recommend Family Paws Parent Education as a resource for parents and caregivers to make sure everyone is safe. Other resources for dog bite prevention can be found here.
In this episode of The Woof Meow Show from March 28th, 2020, Kate and Don have a conversation with Jennifer Shryock about keeping children and dogs safe. We believe this podcast will be especially useful to anyone called upon to supervise the interactions between a child and a dog. This podcast is not just for people with kids and dogs. Any professional that works with parents, children, and dogs can benefit from this information. Jennifer Shryock is the founder of Family Paws Parent Education and is an excellent resource for helping parents manage a home with a little human and a canine. As a mother, pet parent, teacher, and Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, Jennifer knows how to help mom, dad, a child, and the dog live in harmony. In this show, we discuss the behaviors dogs need to learn to perform reliably and the fact that training a dog takes time. Prepping the dog and your home for the arrival of the baby should begin many months ahead of time. If the dog has anxiety or fear issues, working with a veterinary behaviorist may be essential and should start even earlier than training. Jennifer discusses the importance of parents learning how to familiarize themselves with carrying an infant while interacting with the dog and recommends that be done before the child ever comes home.
