Brannigan Thompson, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer at Voya Financial, joins host Dave Hennessy to discuss Voya's strategic shift and what it means for talent strategy. Brannigan shares how his experience living and working in the Netherlands early in his career shaped his leadership approach, and how Voya is now designing its organization for the future rather than around current talent. Key topics: - Designing structure and success profiles for where the business will be in 3-5 years - Implementing AI agents in HR, including interview scheduling and development planning - Voya's four cultural pillars: customer obsession, AI and automation, performance, and quality fundamentals - Why Voya helps employees discover their individual purpose—even when they choose to leave - The importance of continuous performance feedback and measurable KPIs Plus: Keystone's Coach's Corner with Shawna Simcik on the difference between kind and nice leadership.
It's not your imagination: The Kennedys dominated the collective consciousness this year, and the pull was particularly strong within the fashion industry. This week, I sit down with writer, strategist, and Kennedy scholar Maura Brannigan to discuss the myriad ways that the American political family has permeated the zeitgeist recently, and how they represent politics as pop culture in a very palatable way — especially during this disturbing time in our country. Tune in for Maura's take on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy as a moodboard muse and a rare example of true personal style, as well as why minimalism and old money restraint feel so aspirational right now; JFK Jr. as the poster boy for yuppie style that's driving the prep revival seen at brands like J.Crew and Dior Men's; CBK and JFK Jr.'s couple style, as well as our thoughts on the Ryan Murphy series costume design discourse; Sarah Staudinger's purchase of three iconic CBK pieces at Sotheby's auction for $177K (while Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's violet wool coat, worn on the night of John F. Kennedy's election to the presidency, just sold for $50,800 this week); Julia Fox's bloody Jackie Kennedy Halloween costume at this moment of political violence being back in the cultural conversation; Jack Schlossberg's political trajectory, from brain rot content to Vogue correspondent to congressional candidate; RFK Jr.'s MAHA rhetoric affecting the beauty and wellness industry; Olivia Nuzzi's aesthetic transformation in the lead up to American Canto and leaning into the “I had an affair with a Kennedy” look, and so much more. The incorrect file was uploaded yesterday, 9/18. This is the corrected file. Sorry for any confusion.Devin & James are back in the Den! And we're celebrating more 50th anniversaries for the iconic year of 1975. This time we're covering 1975's TOUGH GUY MOVIES! Ranging from over-the-top action to gritty neo-noir, some of our greatest movie stars of the era were busy making this year one of the best for being a badass. We start by taking a swing at Charles Bronson and James Coburn in the criminally underrated HARD TIMES. Then we dive into messy pro-killers James Caan and Robert Duvall in THE KILLER ELITE. Then it's off to Japan with Robert Mitchum in THE YAKUZA. We continue our globetrotting in England with a different kind of Duke, John Wayne in BRANNIGAN. The travel vibe continues as we climb the treacherous "Murder Wall" in Switzerland with Clint Eastwood in THE EIGER SANCTION. Then we return to Los Angeles for the underappreciated Burt Reynolds' dark neo-noir, HUSTLE. After that, we keep on truckin' with Jan Michael Vincent in WHITE LINE FEVER. We finish off with a short bit covering a couple of oddballs, even amongst this bunch: Joe Don Baker (RIP) as MITCHELL, and Paul Newman in THE DROWNING POOL. And that's only a handful of the tough guy movies released this year! Join us for a discussion on some of the best "Lazy Sunday" watches you could ever find.

Aidan Brannigan went from eating Spam with Joey Chestnut to founding No Boring Brands, a creative humor agency. He talks losing big in crypto, the role of humor in marketing, and why great ideas still outlast algorithms.
James and Allan dig up a mess of movies from 1975, stir up some "Bad Blood," and talk about Andrea Bianchi's STRIP NUDE FOR YOUR KILLER, Edwidge Fenech (and more Edwidge Fenech), John Wayne as Frankenstein's monster, and make mention of JAWS - only to talk about how they weren't going to talk about it. Today on part two of our interview with Brendan Wayne on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to The Mandalorian (literally) about growing up the grandson of acting giant John Wayne. We also get into Brendan's own acting career in films like Cowboys and Aliens and CSI before he took the lead role of The Mandalorian on the Disney+ hit show. What's it like to get into acting when your grandfather is John Wayne. Take a listen. We also discuss more of his time growing up around his grandfather, The Duke and some of his most off-beat movies. We hear a terrific story about the film Brannigan which almost got the entire production shut down after an ill-advised explosion on the London dockyards worried authorities that the IRA had planted a bomb. Terrific stuff about the professional and the personal life of a giant of an actor, John Wayne. It's an very up close and personal conversation about Wayne that only a family member could tell. And we hear it, right here, right now on the Rarified Heir Podcast, pilgrim. Another child of a celebrity, interviewed by a child of a celerity. Everyone has a story.
History repeats itself. A new thing is invented. We learn about it, understand it, and apply measures to capture its behaviour and regulate it. And then another new thing is invented. The measures we used start failing us, and the cycle repeats all over again. It is not a story of fire safety; it is a story of humanity. Similar cycles can be observed in all aspects of technology. One could call them Innovation Blind Spots after Prof. Rein; in science, you could call them paradigm shifts after Prof. Kuhn. Regardless, these cycles are the frame we work in, and we need to learn to handle them.In fire safety, they are often a cause of major disasters. In this podcast episode, I once again interview prof. Vincent Brannigan. Vincent has spent a large part of his career studying the limiting factors of innovation in fire science and its regulation. This podcast is framed after a lecture Vincent delivered 15 years ago, which can be accessed here: https://www.fireseat.eng.ed.ac.uk/sites/fireseat.eng.ed.ac.uk/files/images/02-Brannigan.pdfIt is an engaging read, I recommend going through it after the podcast episode!----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. I just drove 500 km to have a conversation with Professor Vincent Brannigan from the University of Maryland, a very unique expert who combines law with fire engineering. In this discussion, we go into the complexities of building codes and fire safety, comparing traditional design methods (prescriptive) with performance-based designs (and all the stuff in between them). Through anecdotes and historical fire incidents, we highlight the impact of these systems on societal safety, economic development, and international trade. Vincent's unique background in both law and technology provides a rich perspective on how fire safety regulations have evolved to meet contemporary challenges. In the episode, we explore the ongoing shift from politically validated regulations to those grounded in technical knowledge. This transition parallels developments in fields like medicine, necessitating a higher level of precision and expertise in ensuring public safety. We also tackle the thorny issue of global standardization, examining how experiential knowledge and political influences shape fire safety laws worldwide. Finally, the episode dives deep into the challenges of balancing innovation and compliance in building safety. With examples from the world of hotels, airports and tall buildings, we discuss the role of engineers and regulators in navigating complex safety landscapes. Historical case studies, like the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, serve as poignant reminders of the stakes involved. Listen in for a thought-provoking exploration of risk analysis, regulatory negotiations, and the constant evolution of fire safety standards as we seek to protect lives and foster innovation.----The Fire Science Show is produced by the Fire Science Media in collaboration with OFR Consultants. In this episode of the show we conclude our September journey through John Wayne's post=Western career by talking about Brannigan. Over the course of our chat you will hear us talk about how after resisting for so long, The Duke decided to lean into the Dirty Harry craze, how getting him out of the country might have given him an opportunity to act outside of his comfort zone and how this movie is still secretly a western anyway. We also talk about John Wayne trying to fit into a small European car, American ideas about following the British rule of law and whether The Duke perhaps walks a little bit like a T-Rex.
