This is the 4th bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. This week we've got a special guest in to talk all about the music of Tove Jansson, and the game we talked about last week (Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley) AND the short story that kicked off this miniseason (the Spring Tune). Martin is a musician, a podcaster, a player of games, so he is ideal for all this! If you would like to listen along to the music, you'll want to start with this advert composed by Robert Farnon. Then visit this lovely Autumn Song by Tove Jansson and Erna Tauro. Henry Kathman's translation and cover of Snufkin's Spring Song can be found here. The video essay Dave was referring to is here. Finally, wrap your ears around the not unchallenging Moomin Voices album. Martin's Spirit of the Moomins is The Wind by Fil Corbitt. His Spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Noah Caldwell-Gervais. You can find his own music at Pale Bird. His podcasts are Song by Song and Neutrino Watch.

My office is a field of poison flowerspurple swaying in the breeze. It is also a pathway. For a bear, whose tracks have on occasion encountered my own. Surprised by each other's quiet presence, we make eye contact before retreat.•On the way to my desk, I traverse a shelf more mixed than lush: Throat Forest — a half failing aspen grove, green shoots among the fallen white trunks. • That which is pliant is a disciple of life: that which is rigid, a disciple of death. • Throat Forest voices this point. The living trees bend and sway, while the dead hold steady and unwavering: solemn monuments, they are their own gravestones.•This has been a year of adjustment, a season of bending and adapting. But in so, a year of life. I appreciate your presence, and this show will return soon, with more findings and searchings.

All we talk about is the smoke. Where I live it has replaced the weather; both conversationally and to some degree physically. Fire has become its own season.I have not had a conversation in over a month that didn't at least touch on the smoke. But really, that's only if we're lucky. Because if we aren't talking about the smoke, it's because a fire has come close enough to talk about that instead. Close enough to our houses or friends houses or favorite places in the mountains that we watch slowly be eaten by a red line as the Facebook group updates the fire perimeter.

Though the Playa has been made famous by the biggest party in the world, Nevada’s Burner Byway Road Trip is about everything BUT Burning Man. ‘Cause let’s face it—the road from Reno to the Black Rock Desert and beyond is loaded with some of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48, surreal landscapes, natural hot springs, some of the darkest designated skies in America, ancient rock carvings, and larger-than-life open air installations inspired by this very place itself. It’s no coincidence that thousands of people make the annual pilgrimage “home” to the Black Rock each year to hit the reset button and grab onto a caliber of freedom found nowhere else. Freedom is in this desert. Always here, open, and waiting along the #BurnerByway. Episode II picks up where we left off at Pyramid Lake, further up the Burner Byway road trip in Gerlach. We begin by chatting with Friends of Black Rock, who lends fascinating insight on the open air installation at Guru Road, as well as the founders of Planet X Pottery—both of whom were inspired by the beauty of the Black Rock to create their work. From there, we sling back some of Bruno’s famous ravioli and a picon punch or two, explore Fly Geyser, and get a glimpse of how vastly spectacular all 799k acres of Black Rock Desert truly is. From Basque sheepherding, to Ranch Brewed Beer, Ghost Towns, Mining, Rodeos, and Cowboying, the history and heritage found along the Cowboy Corridor runs deep, and is yours for the exploring. #CowboyCorridor In the first episode of this three-part series, we embark along the Cowboy Corridor starting at its eastern most point in West Wendover, along Nevada’s portion of Interstate 80. Here, we chat with this sparkling city perched on the western edge of the Bonneville Salt Flats, who’ve embraced live music as part of their story for more than 70 years. This week we bring you voices from heaven, hell, and everywhere in between. In documentary films, the authoritative “Voice of God” style of narration presents a seemingly omniscient, impartial, deep-voiced male narrator. No one has had more practice with the role than Peter Coyote, best known as the narrator of Ken Burns' documentaries (The West, The Roosevelts, The National Parks). Here, Coyote gives a master class on the major differences in meaning that arise from tiny shifts in register, pulling a story out of melodrama into an illusion of objectivity. Ellie Kemper (star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) shares a mysterious sound that's stayed with her for twenty-three years, and describes a high-school musical performance that changed her life. Penelope Spheeris is best known as the director of Wayne's World, but while filming the legendary documentary The Decline of Western Civilization Part III, about homeless L.A. punks, she met her long-time boyfriend SIN, who performs dissonant guitar rock as psychological therapy to exorcise the demons in his mind: “It's like listening to hell.” And our host describes his changing relationship to voices and narration as he adapts to his own degenerative blindness. Finally, we'll inaugurate a new recurring segment, “The iTunes Library of Babel,” in which we present short excerpts from an infinite Borgesian library of podcasts. Produced by Myke Dodge Weiskopf, Jenny Ament, Ross Simonini, and Andrew Leland. Library of Babel excerpts produced by Fil Corbitt and Owen Poindexter.

"We started the trip without much of a purpose," writes Fil Corbitt. "We wanted to be pushed around. Wanted to find something we didn't know we were looking for. We wanted to take some small chance and see where we landed. And see which side was facing up."  But how do you find that kind of serendipity when you only have a week? Fil created a game. Each morning, he and his friend would wake up and roll a single dice. The rules? A one meant go north. 2 = east, 3 = south, 4 = west, 5 = stay put and 6 meant to cross the nearest state border. The only rule? No backtracking.  Today, we follow Fil as he and his friend Brian figuratively and literally roll the dice and see where they land. And which side is facing up.    This episode originally aired as a six-part series on Fil's awesome podcast, Van Sounds. We cut quite a bit of material to turn it into a single piece.
