With just a week until the FIFA World Cup begins, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced they will be ramping up transportation and safety protocols across the city. WFUV's Sonia Weliwitigoda reports. The last time the Knicks were in the NBA Finals was 1999. That year, WFUV listeners voted “Return of the Grievous Angel,” a tribute album for Graham Parsons, as the best album of the year, and the Knicks fell to the San Antonio Spurs that year. But last night the Knicks defeated the Spurs in Game 1 of the NBA finals. New Yorkers, including Governor Kathy Hochul, are celebrating. There's a colorful new campaign in New York City for Pride Month. Pink, white and blue text reading “Trans Rights are Human Rights,” will soon fill LinkNYC kiosks and subway screens across the city. WFUV's Xenia Gonikberg sat down with Dez Stavracos, the artist behind the campaign which aims to educate LGBTQ+ New Yorkers on where they can learn what rights they have. This week in music news, WFUV's Livia Regina shares some of Jack Antonoff's interview with the station about Bleachers' new album. Plus, Phoebe Bridgers has a pop-up show in NYC and Julia Jacklin is going on tour. It's pride month, and in this episode of Sustainability Matters we discuss how queer and trans youth have always fought to shape their own futures—and why their rights have become a flashpoint in contemporary culture wars. 400+ Anti-LGBTQ Bills: Why Pride Month Still Matters Many people ask: “Why do we still need Pride Month?” After all, same-sex marriage is legal. LGBTQ people are visible in media, business, and politics. Haven't we won? The answer is no. As Pride Month begins, LGBTQ Americans—especially transgender youth—are facing the most significant legal and political backlash in decades. While marriage equality remains intact nationwide, the fight has shifted from expanding rights to defending them. More than 400 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced across dozens of states, while over 100 anti-trans laws have been enacted in recent years. From healthcare restrictions and sports bans to book censorship and attacks on legal recognition, the LGBTQ community is confronting a coordinated effort to roll back hard-won protections. In this episode, Karel examines:

Meanwhile, Israel is hosting a massive four-day Pride celebration in Tel Aviv near the Dead Sea, drawing LGBTQ tourists from around the globe. But with tensions exploding across the Middle East, is now the right time for a major international Pride event? Children Are Listening: Hate Speech, Trump & America's Growing Violence Problem Two teenagers carried out a horrifying hate crime at a mosque in San Diego, killing three people. But the bigger question is: where does this kind of hatred come from? Children are not born hating Muslims, LGBTQ people, immigrants, or people of color. They learn it — from adults, media, politicians, social media, and the culture around them. Today, hate speech is treated like entertainment. Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism — people dismiss it as “just opinions,” until violence happens. Then everyone acts shocked. But words matter, especially when young people are listening. And no public figure in America has normalized division and cruelty more than Donald Trump. Whether it's immigrants, LGBTQ people, Muslims, or political enemies, the message spreads far beyond rallies and cable news. The children are listening. And sometimes, they act. Plus: The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas is shutting down, and the reason says a lot about America's economy. Businesses are increasingly abandoning average Americans and focusing only on wealthier consumers. What does that say about where the country is headed? The Trump administration fired over 300,000 federal employees, with Black women disproportionately represented among those let go. Pete Hegseth purged generals and military personnel. Kash Patel fired more than a thousand experienced FBI agents. Pam Bondi gutted the DOJ of over 6,400 people. The result: the very agencies Trump wanted to weaponize against his enemies are now too hollowed out to function. The Minneapolis U.S. Attorney's Office lost 75% of its staff after prosecutors refused to charge protesters with terrorism-related felonies. Grand juries are rejecting politically motivated cases. Federal judges are throwing out prosecutions targeting figures like Letitia James and James Comey. Illegally appointed U.S. attorneys like Alina Haba and Lindsay Halligan are being blocked by the courts. Hawk identifies three categories of resistance keeping democracy alive: everyday Americans confronting ICE, citizens serving on grand juries and rejecting bad cases, and federal district court judges like Judge Boasberg refusing to rubber-stamp political prosecutions. The episode closes with a brutally honest reflection on Trump voters and a focus group story about a disabled mother on Medicaid who supported stripping healthcare from trans kids even as the big beautiful bill threatened to leave her and her children homeless. In this compelling interview, Dr. Alex Iantaffi interviews transgender pioneer and Minnesota State Representative Leigh Finke. They discuss cross-movement solidarity, the recent militarized occupation of Minnesota by ICE during Operation Metro Surge, the impact of the current political violence on trans communities, especially trans women, and on Leigh herself, and the importance of community organizing and political engagement in the fight for all our civil rights.Leigh Finke is honored to serve as State Representative for District 66A. Prior to holding office she worked as a journalist, media creator, and documentary filmmaker. In 2022, she became the first out trans woman elected to the Minnesota Legislature. She chairs the House Reproductive Freedom Caucus and serves as Co-Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee. In her personal time, Leigh enjoys writing, painting, traveling, skateboarding, and organizing community events, and exploring Minnesota's parks with her kids.A few invitations and takeaways from the episode:Cross-movement solidarity is essential because our liberation is tied to one another.Trans, Two-Spirit, nonbinary, and/or gender expansive people are part of and belong in all communities.Engage in local and state elections to support 2SLGBTQ+ rights.Build community networks for mutual support and safety.Advocate for policies that protect civil rights and gender-affirming care, especially for minors.Educate yourselves and others about the systemic nature of injustice and resistance.Find out more about Leigh Finke at the following links:https://www.leighformn.com/about https://linktr.ee/leighformn24 https://www.instagram.com/leighformn/  Instagram: GenderStoriesHosted by Alex IantaffiMusic by Maxwell von RavenGender Stories logo by Lior Effinger-Weintraub

During an NCAA women's swimming championship in March 2022, two seniors tied for fifth place. The race was unremarkable except for one fact: One of the swimmers, Lia Thomas, was a transgender woman. The swimmer she tied with, Riley Gaines, believed the NCAA never should have allowed her to participate. The matchup, and Gaines' subsequent transformation into a leading anti-trans activist, has fueled a growing movement to “save women's sports” from trans women—and a conservative crusade against trans rights more broadly. This week on Reveal, we examine Gaines' rise and radicalization, as her rhetoric shifts from calling out NCAA policy to calling trans women  sexual predators.Over the last year, the anti-trans movement has reached a tipping point. Trans girls are banned from girls' school sports in the majority of states. The NCAA and US Olympic and Paralympic committees have banned trans women from women's competitions. The Supreme Court is currently considering the issue, too. Then we dive into the science to understand how gender-affirming hormone therapy affects trans women's performance—and what questions science still has not answered around fairness in women's sports. Finally, we return to the swimming pool, as reporter Imogen Sayers speaks with Meghan Cortez-Fields, one of the last transgender swimmers to compete as a woman in the NCAA. America Has Truly Lost the Plot | The Karel Show 26-03 It's 2026 — and America feels completely upside down. While the country faces real, urgent crises, the highest court in the land is debating whether fewer than 1,200 student athletes should be allowed to compete in sports because they are transgender — kids whose only “crime” was being born different and receiving medically supervised, professional care. Nine justices, behind closed doors, may decide whether young people get to pursue their dreams — while homelessness grows, injustice spreads, a nation turns on itself in the streets, and a president continues to run amok. Meanwhile, a beloved television actor is aggressively pursued over allegations he strongly denies, while documented abusers of underage girls hold real power on the world stage — a contradiction that exposes just how broken our moral compass has become. Plus: a seemingly simple online question about manicures unexpectedly explodes into a heated debate about women, time, labor, and modern expectations — revealing more about society than anyone expected. The Karel Show delivers unfiltered, thoughtful commentary on politics, culture, and everyday life — without the shouting.
