When graduate instructor Mel Curth gave a student a failing grade for work that didn't answer the assignment, she couldn't have predicted what would happen next. Within days, the student, backed by Turning Point USA and right-wing media, had launched a national campaign. The university removed Mel from teaching. The grade was thrown out. And the student became a conservative media celebrity. Mel’s attorney Brittany Stewart, has defended LGBTQ rights in Oklahoma for decades, breaks down what really happened at the University of Oklahoma, and what it reveals about the coordinated effort to push trans people out of academia and public life. Hosts Nino, Christoph, and Dr. Mikey run through a fast-paced news roundup covering a Department of Education investigation into a transgender student on a co-ed cheer squad, a violent homophobic assault on a New York subway rider, and a federal court restoring funding to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The conversation moves between analysis and personal reflection on transphobia, homophobia, community accountability, and representation, including a feel-good story about a hockey player coming out and a local church keeping its rainbow steps. The episode balances hard news and hopeful wins while emphasizing solidarity, the need for community action, and the real impacts of policy and prejudice on LGBTQ+ lives.

During an NCAA women's swimming championship in March 2022, two seniors tied for fifth place. The race was unremarkable except for one fact: One of the swimmers, Lia Thomas, was a transgender woman. The swimmer she tied with, Riley Gaines, believed the NCAA never should have allowed her to participate. The matchup, and Gaines' subsequent transformation into a leading anti-trans activist, has fueled a growing movement to “save women's sports” from trans women—and a conservative crusade against trans rights more broadly. This week on Reveal, we examine Gaines' rise and radicalization, as her rhetoric shifts from calling out NCAA policy to calling trans women  sexual predators.Over the last year, the anti-trans movement has reached a tipping point. Trans girls are banned from girls' school sports in the majority of states. The NCAA and US Olympic and Paralympic committees have banned trans women from women's competitions. The Supreme Court is currently considering the issue, too. Then we dive into the science to understand how gender-affirming hormone therapy affects trans women's performance—and what questions science still has not answered around fairness in women's sports. Finally, we return to the swimming pool, as reporter Imogen Sayers speaks with Meghan Cortez-Fields, one of the last transgender swimmers to compete as a woman in the NCAA. America Has Truly Lost the Plot | The Karel Show 26-03 It's 2026 — and America feels completely upside down. While the country faces real, urgent crises, the highest court in the land is debating whether fewer than 1,200 student athletes should be allowed to compete in sports because they are transgender — kids whose only “crime” was being born different and receiving medically supervised, professional care. Nine justices, behind closed doors, may decide whether young people get to pursue their dreams — while homelessness grows, injustice spreads, a nation turns on itself in the streets, and a president continues to run amok. Meanwhile, a beloved television actor is aggressively pursued over allegations he strongly denies, while documented abusers of underage girls hold real power on the world stage — a contradiction that exposes just how broken our moral compass has become. Plus: a seemingly simple online question about manicures unexpectedly explodes into a heated debate about women, time, labor, and modern expectations — revealing more about society than anyone expected. The Karel Show delivers unfiltered, thoughtful commentary on politics, culture, and everyday life — without the shouting.

We look into a video series featuring conservative commentator Dennis Prager titled "The Consequences of Secularism." We take a critical look at Prager's claims, which often rely on misleading language and emotional rhetoric, aiming to push his agenda against secularism - which he doesn't define. Throughout the episode, we dissect the implications of his discourse and what they reveal about the broader cultural conversation around religion and secularism.Prager's perspective paints a dire picture of a society that he believes is collapsing due to a decline in religious adherence. He presents himself as a defender of Judeo-Christian values, arguing that the absence of belief leads to societal chaos. I examine his repetitive assertions and the logical inconsistencies they often entail, beginning with his opening gambit, which claims that if society becomes too secular, it will inevitably collapse. He doesn't see the irony of making that same claim since the 1970sWe need to call out the selection of studies he presents, especially when they align with his ideological perspective while he dismisses findings that contradict his agenda. For instance, while Prager cites research linking religious involvement with lower suicide rates, we point out studies that highlight the mental health benefits of secular support systems particularly for trans kids that Prager and his PragerU regularly dismiss. We also explore Prager's tendency to conflate individual beliefs with broader social policies. His claims about movements like "defund the police" are particularly scrutinized, revealing his tendency to misrepresent nuanced discussions within progressive circles. Defunding police, often tied to calls for social justice reform, is framed by Prager as a sign of moral decay, while I argue that this viewpoint ignores the legitimate motivations behind advocacy for community-centered safety approaches.Full show notes and links usedSend us a textSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

But woven through these everyday milestones are deeper conversations about what it means to parent, advocate, and show up for transgender youth. We share the relief of seeing correct gender markers affirmed on official documents, the bittersweet transition of kids gaining independence, and the courage it takes to wear a message as simple—and as controversial—as “You Are Loved.”Along the way, we talk about the troubling rhetoric labeling transgender people and their advocates as dangerous, and why visibility and allyship matter now more than ever.If you're taking something away from our podcast, we'd appreciate it if you'd take a moment to provide us with a review; the more listeners and reviews, the more people we can reach and support. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson, and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to roundup the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week are: ✨ An Italian academic, Roberto Luigi Pagani who has taught Icelandic, and how to read old Icelandic manuscripts at the University of Iceland and lived here since 2014, was refused citizenship because he hasn't passed a test in Icelandic.✨The minister of finance, Daði Mar Kristófersson, is introducing next year's budget this morning. The plan is to run a 15 billion ISK deficit next year, but the plan is to end the deficit in 2027.✨Morgunblaðið reported this morning that the 40% increase in applications of foreign students who also need a residence permit, may be linked to numerous TikTok videos, promoting the fact that it is free to attend university in Iceland, and furthermore that students can bring their families with them while attending studies in Iceland. The Grapevine has received numerous emails from students who applied to study at the University of Iceland this semester, but whose residence permit was not processed in time for them to attend. ✨On Monday last week, RÚV decided it was time to platform MP and former podcast bro, Snorri Másson, who's been maintaining in interviews that there is no freedom of speech with regards to discussing trans-rights and policies in Iceland. RÚV brought him on to debate Þorbjörg Þorvaldsdóttir, the spokesperson for Iceland's National Queer Organizations. What followed were 20 minutes of Snorri playing victim, while making no solid points in the debate and constantly interrupting Þorbjörg. The following day it was reported that the Police's special forces had kept a watch on Snorri's house that night, for security reasons, and Snorri then issued a statement that the whole thing “proved” his point that no freedom of speech existed regarding the discussion of trans issues in Iceland.Totally unrelated, RÚV premiered a new documentary series called Hate. Which is about “the rise of hate speech in Iceland and the backlash that has occurred in the struggles of various minority groups in recent years.”✨Saturday saw a protest against “genocide” take place all over Iceland; in Reykjavík, Ísafjörður, Egilsstaðir, Akureyri, Stykkishólmur, Húsavík and Hólmavík. Trans Rights Matter: The Erin Reed Interview

Gaslit Nation

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 30, 2025 41:39

In a world awash with disinformation and fear-based politics, what cuts through the noise isn't perfection; it's authenticity. As Erin Reed, a trailblazing journalist and trans rights advocate, puts it: the most effective leaders and allies are the ones who show up with sincerity, values, and courage. Reed knows this from experience. Alongside her wife, Montana state legislator Zooey Zephyr, they've faced the harshest forms of political repression, from being silenced in state chambers to watching harmful laws passed in the name of "protecting" sports or children. And yet, their fight continues, fueled by love, clarity, and hope. So how can you support the trans community in meaningful ways? Stand Firm in Your Values – Democratic Party leaders especially shouldn't be “Republican-lite” or speak through the filter of 12 consultants. Speak from the heart, like Kentucky's Andy Beshear, who stood up for trans rights and still won big in a deep red state. Educate Yourself and Others – Learn the real facts. Trans athletes aren't “cheating.” They're barely even represented in elite sports. Medical care for trans youth isn't a free-for-all;  it's cautious, professional, and consent-driven. And no, no one is performing surgeries in school cafeterias.  Be Visible. Be Vocal. – When institutions cave to pressure and erase diversity programs, allies must speak up. Trans people aren't always in the room, but you might be. Build Solidarity – Globally and locally. Anti-trans disinformation spreads across borders. So should our support. Reach out to advocate groups abroad and build an international coalition of support and solidarity.  History is watching. As Reed reminds us, this is our civil rights moment. Whether you're an activist, a parent, a lawmaker, or a friend, your genuineness, your voice, and your love can help shape a more just future.  All it takes is a spark. President Trump's actions against transgender Americans have been stunningly wide-ranging. They've also been popular.Trump has sought new restrictions on trans people in sports, schools, the military, prisons and medical care, and in government documentation. And a recent poll found that a majority of Americans approve of how Mr. Trump is handling trans issues — far above how he is handling his presidency generally. On trans-related issues, Americans' opinions have moved right since 2022. What led the trans-rights movement to suffer not just a major electoral loss, but also a sweeping loss of public support?Sarah McBride is a freshman congresswoman from Delaware, where she was previously a state senator. And she is the first openly transgender member of Congress. In our conversation, Representative McBride reckons with the trans rights movement's shortcomings, what liberalism should look like in a profoundly illiberal time and how to win hearts and minds through a politics of “grace.” It's the most stirring defense of the practice of politics — with all its compromises and disappointments and frustrations — I've heard in some time. This episode contains strong language.Book Recommendations:Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns GoodwinThese Truths by Jill LeporeThe Final Days by Bob Woodward and Carl BernsteinThoughts?
