Chris Enss is a New York Times bestselling author who has been writing non-fiction books about women of the Old West for more than thirty years. Chris was a guest at White Stallion Ranch and she took time from her vacation and spent it with Russell and Steven for the Cowboy Up Listeners.  Chris has authored more than fifty published books on the subject of women in the old west. Renewed calls tonight for rodeos to be banned altogether following allegations a bull had to be killed after it was seriously injured at a weekend event. The animals right group SAFE has released video footage that it said is from the Waimarino rodeo on Saturday. SAFE Campaign Manager Emily Hall spoke to Lisa Owen.

Animal rights group SAFE released a video showing a bull bucking with a rider on its back and appearing to injure one of its hind legs. SAFE claims it is the fifth animal to be killed or suffer catastrophic injuries over the past four months of the rodeo season. Checkpoint contacted the Waimarino Rodeo Association and our inquiry was referred to Lyal Cocks, who's on the Rodeo Animal Welfare Committee. Cocks spoke to Lisa Owen.

In today's show, we're getting the inside scoop from two photographers who've been fully immersed in these vibrant communities since long before they became a top fashion trend. Separated by a generation in age and with pictures spanning from film to digital, we follow Ron Tarver and Ivan McClellan from their early years in Oklahoma and Kansas, to the urban stables of Northern Philadelphia, the legendary Roy LeBlanc Rodeo in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and beyond. Tarver's photographs have been exhibited internationally. His pictures can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections, and have appeared in major publications both in print and online.  In 2004, he co-authored the book We Were There: Voices of African American Veterans, published by Harper Collins, accompanied by a traveling exhibition. A recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2001 Pew Fellowship in the Arts, Tarver has also received funding from the NEA, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and an Independence Foundation Fellowship.  He currently serves as Associate Professor of Art at Swarthmore College. His book, The Long Ride Home: Black Cowboys in America was released by George F Thompson Publishers in September. Ivan McClellan is a photojournalist and designer originally from Kansas City, Missouri. These days he calls Portland, Oregon home.  His work reveals marginalized aspects of black culture, challenging broad assumptions and myths about racial identity in America.  His project Eight Seconds, focuses on elevating narratives about American Black cowboys, and transforming the culture of the American West by ‘re-centering' black women and men back as an integral part of our historical narrative.  After initially self-publishing his photos in book form, Eight Seconds: Black Rodeo Culture was released by Damiani books in April 2024. The winner of the 2022 Getty Inclusion grant, McClellan's photos have been presented in and collected by Museums and cultural spaces across the United States. His work has also been featured in ESPN: The Undefeated and Fast Company.  As an experience designer for Adobe Lightroom, he has led projects for Nike, Adidas, Disney, and the U.S. National Soccer Team. And most recently, he founded the Eight Seconds Rodeo in 2023. At that time, it preceded the Tucson Rodeo and was a one-day event, both of which were conceived with the thought that they could benefit Tucson's economy by attracting tourists. The plan worked! The Sisters Rodeo has begun. The event will last through June 9 and features multiple performances and a parade. Next month, St. Paul will host its rodeo over the 4th of July. The rodeos have run for more than 80 years and host thousands of spectators in their rural communities. I love rodeos! I'm so excited to go to rodeos this summer, and wanted to learn the history behind the sport. I heard a tale that each cowboy would bring a section of fence to set up the ring during the very first rodeos, but turns out I couldn't find that anywhere online lol.
