Welcome back to the Tech Heads F1 Podcast. This week we are joined by IndyCar driver, STEM advocate, and all around interesting character, JR Hildebrand. JR has driven everything under the sun from IndyCars to F1 cars, competitive drift machines, Pike's Peak cars, rally cars, and even land speed record machines at the Bonneville Salt Flats. JR is the host of The Race IndyCar Podcast, and adjunct lecturer at Stanford University, and an advocate for STEM education using motorsports as a way to teach students about engineering and science. Based on years of first hand experience, JR gives unique insights into aerodynamic development in spec racing series and what it takes to drive a race car at 240 mph. He also gives his thoughts on the dramatic qualifying from the Miami GP and what F1 can learn from IndyCar (and vice versa). We think this was a great episode, we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it! In 2017, CarStories sat down with Ralph Hudson who was a racer and a builder. He is a member of the 200mph Club at Bonneville and wears his red hat proudly. He's the fastest man on two wheels at El Mirage dry lake. He is also an accomplished road racer and generally an incredible guy to sit and listen to. He's got more racing stories than we have time for in one episode so we hope he'll come back sometime soon. Ralph is also something of a mentor to Stacie B. London, so she came in to help Ralph tell his story. Hudson set the 297-mph record in Bolivia, in July 2018. In 2020, unfortunately Ralph Hudson, current FIM World Record holder for the all-time fastest non-streamliner motorcycle at 297 mph, died from injuries suffered Bonneville Salt Flats. He was 69 years old.

Jim BusbyWhat I love about motorsport is the ridiculous number of stories just waiting to be told!At every level, in each era, there are incredible personalities who contributed greatly to the development of our sport, and Jim Busby is one such man.Based out of Laguna Beach it would have been easy for anyone driving past, to miss the world class racing operation taking place just out of sight.Jim is one of the rare talents that could combine engineering and fabrication skills with great speed behind the wheel.Hitting his stride in the heady days of 80's sportscars in the IMSA GTP Series, his cars won multiple races as well as winning his Class at Le Mans as a driver. It was a great time of camaraderie and high jinks, but balanced by intense competition, and Jim saw it all. Drag racing and the famous Bonneville Salt Flats also benefited from his intense passion for all things fast, and being a true blooded hot-rodder he made everything faster than when he got it.What a cool guy and great fun to talk to. We only just touched the surface in this podcast, so I may need round 2!Enjoy,JB

In doing so, he sets off two incredible years of drama and heart-stopping competition between rivals, families, and even corporations, thousands of miles away in the United States. What incredible lengths did these competitors go to in order to win the never-ending arms race for the record? What propelled these men and women to such achievements? And what major innovation in the 1960s changed the world of speed forever? It's often called the "world's largest man-made lake" and it spans about 30 miles long, and about 15 miles wide. The Bonneville Salt Flats is a popular location for racing vehicles because it has very little traction. It's also used for testing things like tires and engines for safety purposes. And a totally must visit if you ask me!In today's podcast I'm going to be talking about this amazing place, the Bonneville Salt Flats and my full experience there!Key PointsWhat is the Bonneville Salt Flats? How far is it from Salt Lake CityHow big are the salt flats?Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt FlatsWhat to bring?DISCOVER  365 Days of Adventure from YOUR Backyard to the Global Playground - Get your FREE LIST HERE and Make Everyday An Adventure About Marina 'Travel Experta'I am an Experience Collector, World Traveler,  Expat Mama and WifeI have been an expat for over 20 years raising 2 trilingual sonsMy family and I have traveled to over 40 countries and counting …I'm here to inspire you to travel, move internationally, have fun with your family and so much more!Did you enjoy the podcast?Leave a review on Apple Podcast! Hot Rod Blues, Episode 15, George Poteet The Hot Rod Blues guys managed to corner hot rodder and ten-time Speed Week Hot Rod trophy winner, George Poteet, to talk about his history. Poteet grew up in Mantachie, Mississippi, where he was introduced to his love of cars at nearby Fulton Dragway. He ended up going to college at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), graduating with a degree in Business. From there, he went on to work for a company developing home water filtration systems that he helped design from a unit found in a trash bin in Canada (you can't make this up!). His success lead to other successful endeavors, which allowed him to start buying the cars he coveted as a kid. Over the past two decades, Poteet has been one of the most prolific benefactors of hot rod shops across the country. He was the first paying customer of several well-known builders who have gone on to build some of the most iconic custom cars taking some of the most prestigious awards in the car hobby. Through his love of hot rods and street rods, he remembers looking at the pages of Hot Rod Magazine and wanting to see the Bonneville Speedway. After joining the Memphis Street Rods, Poteet got his first introduction to the Bonneville Salt Flats when his friend Paul Kosma invited him to watch him run. He's had "salt fever" ever since after buying a car on that fateful trip. If you know anything at all about land speed racing, you'll recognize George Poteet's name as the driver of the Speed Demon, a twin-turbo LS-powered streamliner that has won the Hot Rod trophy an astounding ten times. The trophy is presented to the car with the highest speed at the Bonneville Speed Week in August. Poteet holds numerous land speed records in Speed Demon with a multitude of powerplants. In the process, Poteet has gone over 400 mph (on the ground) than any other person on the planet. The Speed Demon is the fastest piston-powered vehicle on the planet and the team is shooting for 500mph at this year's meet. Poteet gives the guys a rundown on the whole story of how it all came to be. He is a humble man who is uncomfortable speaking about his accomplishments and rarely does interviews. The Hot Rod Blues crew extends a sincere thank you to Mr. Poteet for sitting down with us and telling us his story. One of our goals with the Hot Rod Blues podcast is to document Memphis hot rodding history, and that cannot be done without knowing more about George Poteet. It was an extreme honor for us to sit down with him for as long as he did. We hope you enjoy the interview and share it with your friends! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hot Rod Blue Podcast is co-hosted by Shawn Brereton of Auto Enthusiast Network, Mike Abbott of Steel Rose Metal Co, Javier Augustine of Bomber Steel Customs, and Shawn Young of Kingfish Metal Works.
