Margaret Talbot, writing in The New Yorker in 2005, recounted that when animators at Pixar got stuck on a project they'd file into a screening room to watch a film by Hayao Miyazaki. Best known for works like “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Princess Mononoke,” and “Spirited Away,” which received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, in 2002, he is considered by some to be the first true auteur of children's entertainment. On this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss the themes that have emerged across Miyazaki's œuvre, from bittersweet depictions of late childhood to meditations on the attractions and dangers of technology. Miyazaki's latest, “The Boy and the Heron,” is a semi-autobiographical story in which a young boy grieving his mother embarks on a quest through a magical realm as the Second World War rages in reality. The Japanese title, “How Do You Live?,” reveals the philosophical underpinnings of what may well be the filmmaker's final work. “Wherever you are—whether it seems to be peaceful, whether things are scary—there's something happening somewhere,” Cunningham says. “And you have to learn this as a child. There's pain somewhere. And you have to learn how to live your life along multiple tracks.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989)“My Neighbor Totoro” (1988)“Old Enough!” (1991-present)“Princess Mononoke” (1997)“Spirited Away” (2001)“The Boy and the Heron” (2023)“The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C. Paintings by the world-famous Moomins creator Tove Jansson are on show in Finland. The exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum marks the 80th anniversary of the publication of Jansson's book The Moomins and the Great Flood, which introduced the creatures to the world. Prior to the success of the Moomins, Jansson first made a name for herself as a talented artist who painted on commission in public spaces during the 1940s and 1950s. The exhibition features her public murals, including sketches that were found in her studio and have never before been shown to the public. “This exhibition at HAM—Helsinki Art Museum—is special because it's the first time we can see the wholeness of Tove Jansson's all public artworks that she has ever made,” says Heli Harni, curator of the exhibition. Five original murals and several competition paintings, as well as photographic reproductions of works that couldn't be moved to the museum, are displayed at the exhibition called Paradise. Harni hopes the exhibition will show visitors Jansson's creative versatility. “It's a bit different than her storytelling in her books. And as we know, Moomin books and the story of Moomins going and building their own Paradise in the Moomin Valley,” she says. The exhibition also features a display of early edition Moomin books. “It is the jubilee year of the first Moomin book, as we know The Moomins and the Great Flood. And this theme is kind of connected to also this exhibition. And we have also here animation from the first book,” says Harni. While an exhibition dedicated to Tove Jansson must of course refer to the Moomins, the focus is centered on her public works for factory walls, hospitals and nurseries. Jansson's works, some with hidden Moomins, will be on display in Helsinki until April 2025 before some of the creations depart for Japan on a two-year tour. Russell Howard’s Wonderbox

I tell you what's fun to listen to: someone who loves cake, talking passionately about cake. Griefcast's Cariad Lloyd sits with Russell and waxes lyrical about Pavlova and wider cakes. There's more! We get all down and dirty with the Moomins and then there's a weird bit where Cariad and Russell start acting out passages from Labyrinth. Which music star was originally slated to play Jareth? It wasn't Bowie… the answer lies in this terrific episode. Cariad talked in the podcast about her book, the Christmas Wish-tastrophe, and that is available now, and if you know an 11-14 year old just get them this for Christmas. Then that one is done, another one off your list. They will read and enjoy it.  You can get that book at your local independent bookshop, or google the name of the book and choose an independent book provider online. You can do this! Don't just default to the monolithic behemoths! Cariad's regular podcast is Griefcast, where she talks to all manner of people about the various ways people deal with life when things are tough. Cariad is an absolutely incredible host and it's a wonderful podcast, whether you yourself are struggling or not. Check it out HERE.  In this week's Patreon show of Five Brilliant Questions, Cariad answered some deep knowledge questions about Gondor (It's Lord of the Rings apparently. I have no idea). She also reveals what kind of hat she would be (as always, really probing questions from you guys) and Russell has a crisis about hat-wearing in general.  Go to: patreon.com/RussellHoward to get involved. Looking forward to seeing you there!  And that faint glugging noise means our Bathysphere has reached the surface of the water and our underwater journey through the Great Sea of Blurb has come to an end. Let us make our soggy way into the decompression chamber and talk about all the magnificent words we saw over a lovely biscuit and a cup of tea.  See you next week. This is the 23rd episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. And just like that, it's the end of the season! We're going out on a story that actually shows us what happens when someone has a problem and wonders "What would Snufkin do?" Sniff is inconsolable over the loss of his favourite toy, a small dog called Cedric, with bejewelled eyes (?!). Even Moominmamma can't help him, so he wanders down to Snufkin's camp and gets told a story. It's a very classic story-shape about belongings not making you happy, but you know what we say? There's nothing wrong with playing the hits well! This story is a real two-hander between Snufkin and Sniff. It really wouldn't be the same without Sniff's many, pertinent, exasperating interruptions. We have a go at filling some plot holes, like: when did Sniff get back from wherever it was he went? Who gave him the toy dog, and why did this put jewels in its eyes? Next season we'll be reading the Moomin comics, so dig out your copies if you want to read along! Our Spirits of the Moomins this week are The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander and Tales of Uncle Remus: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit by Julius Lester. Dave has sneaked three (three!) Spirits of the Podgoblin's hat in this season finale to keep you going until we get back: Cane and Rinse, Girl Mode and Rainbow Road.

Are they really as wicked as they're cracked up to be? What does the birch bark scroll mean? Hop along and find out none of the answers to these questions! This is supposed to be a story about the Hattifatteners, but it might more appropriately be named: The Feelings and Projections that Moominpappa has about the Hattifatteners. Which is a bit disappointing for Hattifattener fans but it's still a pretty good story! Dave's done some serious research into queer species in the Moomins, and Hattifatteners as cyborgs in particular. Nina's got a super bumper natural history corner about birch bark and parthenogenic mothers, with additional rustling sound effects. There's a maths corner too, which is unlikely to happen again. Have we all got our little pieces of birch bark in hand? Good, now we'll begin. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is Sophia Jansson – niece of Tove Jansson, the legendary Swedish-speaking Finnish writer, artist, novelist, illustrator, and children's book author, best known for creating the Moomins. Born in Helsinki in 1914, Tove grew up immersed in art from a young age. It was thanks to her artist parents, who raised her and her brothers in a home filled with plaster dust, clay, paintings, and floor-to-ceiling books – known to be (quote) “a box with endless secret compartments…” It was even thought she slept on the shelf at one point! But, growing up in the 1910s and 30s, it was also a time wracked by war. Turning to art, Tove made paintings – in a style influenced by the post-Impressionists – and conceived of imaginary worlds, steeped in nature – from forests to the sea – perhaps to escape the imploding world around her. Jansson's books for children and her novels for adults are just as much great stories as they are philosophies on life as she wrote: “before the war I used to think the purpose of life was to act as justly as possible; after the war I thought the purpose of life was to be as happy as possible.” And there is no shadow of a doubt that Jansson and the Moomins, the large-snouted trolls, can show us the true meanings of life. This week we're reading one of Tove's most famous short stories: The Invisible Child. It's a pretty bright and funny story with very dark themes. We both like it, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype, for us. Little My is picking poisonous mushrooms (what else is new?), Moomintroll is an ass, and Moominmamma is a confirmed witch. It's a good one for cameos of Too-Ticky, and vengeance on fathers. We've got quite the fungus-based Natural History/Translation chat. We talk about whether bashing coldly ironical types in the head is even any use. Justice for people with hair colours that aren't black or yellow! We're popping in with something a little different for you this week, it's a video game review! That's right, we're almost topical! Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is a beautiful, relaxing, not quite open world exploration of Moomin Valley through the eyes and musical instruments of Snufkin. We discuss the way it feels, the way it looks, the way it sounds. Dave has some nitpicks. We wonder how canon the good ship SnufMin is to these game developers. We play a round of our unofficial but recurring game: which Moomin character do you feel painfully called out by? And have a think about what kind of participant Little My would be, if you put her in school and made her be in a poetry workshop. Matt's Spirit of the Moomins is Impro by Keith Johnston. And you have to learn how to live your life along multiple tracks.” Read, watch, and listen with the critics: “Kiki's Delivery Service” (1989) “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988) “Old Enough!” (1991-present) “Princess Mononoke” (1997) “Spirited Away” (2001) “The Boy and the Heron” (2023) “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C. S. Lewis (1950) “The Moomins series” by Tove Jansson (1945-70) “The Wind Rises” (2013) New episodes drop every Thursday. Follow Critics at Large wherever you get your podcasts. It's now time for the fifth and final episode of the podcast series about the Moomin phenomenon. And it's finally time to focus on the creator: Tove Jansson. In this series, we've been discussing the Moomin phenomenon. Fans have told us how the Moomin world has absorbed them to the extent that they can even imagine tattooing the characters onto their bodies. We've also examined if there is such a thing as Moomin philosophy, and we've met many people who have been inspired by both Moomin ethics and aesthetics. We've also inundated ourselves with Moomin paraphernalia and asked ourselves if Moomin has become too commercial. We've been to Helsinki, the Finnish archipelago, London, north and south of Sweden and last but not least, Japan! And wherever we've traveled, we've found a world filled with Moomins. But this episode is going to hone in on something else. We're taking a look at the creator of the Moomins, Tove Jansson. Even if there have been prolific amounts of extensive academic text about her person, Tove never wanted to be a particularly public figure. She was at her happiest ensconced on her little island in the archipelago and in her tucked away studio in Helsinki during the colder months together with her life partner and love, Tuulikki Pietilä. Who was Tove Jansson, and what is her legacy? One of the places we will visit is her famous and mythical studio in Helsinki. In this episode we'll meet Sophia Jansson - the niece of Tove Jansson, publishers Mark Ellingham and Natania Jansz and actors and singers Emma Klingenberg and Kim Gustavsson among others.

Now is the time to hear people who have been deeply influenced by the Moomins, from London, through Helsinki all the way to Tokyo. What does a theater director, an author of children's books and a philosopher have in common? Well, they might just all be drawing their inspiration from Moominvalley. In fact, imagine all the people around the world influenced by the gentle Moomins, the hysterically dutiful Fillyjonk, the orderly Hemulens, or the free-spirited Snufkin. Imagine the righteous anger of Little My encouraging one person to take up a worthwhile cause, and pushing another to finally tell the stories they always wanted to tell. This is the third installment of the podcast about the Moomin phenomenon. In the past, we have looked at the fans of the Moomins, as well as the philosophy of the Moomins. But can an entire hospital be inspired by Moomin values and philosophy? Apparently there is such a place, the children's hospital in Helsinki, which has incorporated Moomin values in every step taking care of the patients. We will also visit a fruit garden full of instruments, a studio where the tunes of Moominvalley emerge. In this episode we'll meet the musician Lauri Porra and author Philip Ardagh and desingers Rika Kawato and Harriet Wine among others.

As we delve into Moomin philosophy in this episode, we'll be speaking with academics and philosophers such as Sanna Tirkkonen and Björn Sundmark about their studies of the deeper aspects of the Moomins. Many people around the world have different Moomin characters as role models, despite (or maybe because of) the flaws and quirks that both children and adults can identify with. What is it about the Moomins that appeals to so many on so many levels?
