The couples paired up in Martin Ritt's 1961 musical drama Paris Blues were more than just smart casting. Real life married paramours Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward play Ram and Lillian, a jazz musician and the woman he falls in love with him. And Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll, real life lovers at the time, play Eddie and Connie. Carroll and Poitier had carried on an extramarital affair on their previous film Porgy and Bess and continued during the making of Paris Blues. Both eventually stayed married and ended the affair after Paris Blues was completed. Dan and Vicky discuss the jazz heavy film along with lots of recently seen including Moana 2, The Coffee Table, Twisters, Blink Twice, They/Them, Kyle Mooney's Y2K and NBC series St. Denis. The morning after an appalling night before, I reflect on lessons from Trump's big win. I specifically look at his clear messaging that posed him as the voter's ally. I only saw his "Kamala is for They/Them. President Trump is for you" messaging today. It's crisp, clear and direct and speaks to concerns middle America has about the country's direction.

This week, Spooktober continues with what is widely regarded as one of the most frightening films of all time, as a British master of cinema scares turns his sights to the skies with an eco-horror story that dares to ask... what if birds were jerks? It's 1963's The Birds, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, and starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Plechet and a young Veronica Cartwright. Time has not been the kindest to this old girl, as a number of sequences that shocked and frightened audiences back in the day now play as laughably funny a lot of the time. Being a Hitchcock film, there are a handful of transcendently great scenes, but few of them involve dive-bombing birds if we're being honest. I guess you can probably tell we didn't love it. Tune in to hear us justify those feelings! Plus: J Mo's been on a trashy horror kick to get in the Spooky Season mood, and Hayley's got a theatrical field report on the Jason Reitman SNL origin picture Saturday Night. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening us discuss it, The Birds is not currently streaming in Canada at the time of publication, but can likely be rented for free at your nearest public library. Other works discussed in this episode include Scream, Barbarian, Frankie Freako, Psycho Goreman, Hundreds of Beavers, Love and Monsters, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, Friday the 13th Part III, Freddy vs. Jason, Clue, The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Breaker High, The Black Phone, They/Them, The Deliverance, The First Purge, The Time Machine (1960), Singin' in the Rain, The Happening, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Mummy (1999), Trap, The Lady in the Water, Old, Shaun of the Dead, and The Mist among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Spooktober with this month's nomination for canon consideration: John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), an absolute Halloween classic with timeless and immaculate creature make-up and practical effects, not to mention an iconic lead performance from the king of cool himself, Kurt Russell. The Thing is not currently streaming in Canada, which really goes to show how much the streaming dream is dead. But you can find it in discount bins at your local retailer I'm sure. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Talking to Darwin Del Fabro is like talking to the embodiment of a bona fide muse. With an ethereal beauty, they celebrate their non-binary side, and with well-crafted words of artistry, they inspire with every phrase that lilts out of their mouth. An old soul in a youthful body, their manners and grace are from yesteryear, while their modern ideas and work ethic make them a present-day mover and shaker in the entertainment field. There is little left that they haven't accomplished. A successful singer, actor, producer, fashionista, and more, they live and breathe entertainment with a resume that most other artists don't even come close to in a lifetime. We, in the US, are just getting to appreciate the person who has come to us via Brazil. US audiences first saw Darwin in Blumhouse's queer-themed horror film They/Them, while they have celebrated a lucrative career in stage and screen and music in Brazil. In this episode we talk about the culture of Brazil, being queer in Brazil, getting into the biz very early on, his move to New York and learning English while studying musical theatre, his creative process when making music, his return to Brazil as non-binary after 8 years away, his latest album Revisiting Elis Regina, his role in and love for horror films, and so much more!Hosted by Alexander Rodriguez @AlexanderisOnAirYou can check out our in-depth chat with them in the current issue of GED Magazine now on newsstands or at GEDMag.com

Today's featured guest is Kelly Garcia-Ramos (pronouns They/Them). Kelly is a rising fourth year student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Neuroscience and Chinese. Kelly has stuttered ever since they could remember, and going through having a stutter has been one of their most difficult challenges up until recently. They started a support group at UPenn called Speech Fluency @ Penn (though this will be changed to Stuttering Advocacy @ Penn) to raise awareness about this special kind of neurodiversity for students. They have recently been featured on Penn Today, a school-wide publication, for their advocacy and have plans to expand their advocacy into their research and daily life. I believe that there is healing in sharing, and I want to thank Kelly for sharing their story with me today. We invited our music sponsor Miss Christine to talk about walking on their journey of queer discoveries and creating space for queer folks in their original songs. Christine Moad, a bassist and singer-songwriter, blends indie rock with blues and soul influences delivered with a defiant punk attitude to open listeners' minds to possibilities beyond the gender binary. This episode is a fantastic way to wrap up Pride month; however, remember that the struggles and celebration of LGBTQ+ lives continue throughout the year. [Miss Christine Bio] Christine Moad has traveled the world from Tennessee to Monaco as a professionally touring bassist. They attended the Berklee College of Music before gaining experience as a session musician in Nashville. Christine defied expectations yet again by leaving Nashville behind for a farm near Iowa City where they write and record their original songs. Miss Christine released their debut solo album, Conversion, in 2019. The follow-up, “Bittersweet,” is now available on CD with a digital release set for 2023. If you missed out on watching They/Them (2022) when it debuted last summer, you better step up your pussies and get to it! While it doesn't actually feature any theys slashing thems like the title might have you believe, this conversion camp horror movie is well worth a watch. We're not saying it's good exactly — that's for you to judge — but there is definitely a lot going on here. For one, there's Kevin Bacon, a CLEAR REFERENCE to Friday the 13th. There's also a Jason Voorhees name drop followed by a pivotal pride month moment. On a new Spooky Tuesday, we're talking about all that and more as we explore the Glee Project vibes, surprise singalongs, and absolutely mesmerizing monologues.References:https://www.them.us/story/they-them-peacock-horror-movie-reviewhttps://www.out.com/film/2022/8/19/theythem-creative-queer-horror-film-fails-its-premisehttps://horrorpress.com/reviews/2124/review-they-them-is-a-problematic-yes-no/https://variety.com/2022/film/reviews/they-them-review-peacock-they-slash-them-1235324348/https://collider.com/they-them-review-kevin-bacon-john-logan-blumhouse-peacock/https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3732262/they-them-how-the-conversion-camp-slasher-fails-to-meet-the-moment/https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3731082/im-strong-enough-to-not-do-this-in-defense-of-polarizing-slasher-they-them/
Episode SummaryIn the second-part of our conversation about the Divine Feminine, we look at the ramifications of believing God is a guy. Institutional Christianity has given us God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, a triune male God with “He/Him” pronouns. And this male dominated theology has created a male dominator culture that manifests itself politically, socially, sexually, religiously, and economically in pragmatism, patriotism, persecution, capitalism, greed, aggression, egoism, hierarchy, oppression, exclusion, bigotry, ignorance, and emotionally stunted men. All of which has the planet on the brink of destruction. But what if we're wrong? What if God isn't a guy after all? And how would seeing God in female form change the way we understand ourselves and the world around us?Rediscovering the Divine female attributes of God is one of the first steps toward our collective liberation from the dominant power structures that rule our lives. In this episode, we uncover all the ways God is referenced in female language throughout Scripture and church history. We also look at Jesus' primordial identity as Holy Wisdom, or the Sophia of God, making the historical Jesus the personification of the Divine Feminine. Quotables“If God is male, the male is God.”“Domination of women has provided a key link, both socially and symbolically, to the domination of earth.”“The symbolic evidence of women's invisibility in the human race is most clear perhaps in her suppression, her camouflage, her negation even in language. Women are subsumed, excised, erased by male pronouns, by male terminology, by male prayers, even by exclusively male images of God.”“There has always been a vocal minority recognizing the many pronouns for God, including “He/Him,” “She/Her,” “They/Them.”“All Language about God is metaphorical, but those metaphors matter.”“One of the most ancient metaphorical understandings and expressions of Divinity is God as womb of the world.”“How can women be made in the image of God if God cannot be imagined in female form?”“What does God do all day long? God gives birth. From all eternity God lies on a maternity bed giving birth.”“Sophia is the first of God's works, God's female companion in the creation of the cosmos.”“Sophia became flesh and dwelt among us.”“Just as God is our Father, so God is also our Mother.”Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! They/Them. The trans movement is hell-bent on changing the language to fit their deceitful narrative, but did you know that demons refer to themselves with this language? Kevin Bacon [Footloose, JFK, The Woodsman, Mystic River] talks with Anna about getting cast in his first movie, the 1978 classic National Lampoon's Animal House which he expected to change his life, his failed attempt as a waiter and the terrifying boss who remembered him years later, the advice Kevin would give his younger self, his favorite death scene, his new movie THEY/THEM, and much more. You also get to hear Kevin describe meeting his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, and can compare his version of events with how Kyra describes their love story in her episode last year. After talking with Kevin, Anna gets a call from Annie whose boyfriend's mother doesn't think Annie is good enough for her son. Then we hear from two past callers and find out what what's happened since they first called in to Unqualified. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In 1978, Kevin Bacon got cast in Animal House. And in the ensuing decades, he starred in iconic films including A Few Good Men, Apollo 13, Mystic River and, of course, Footloose. In this week's "Sunday Sitdown," Willie Geist gets together with the actor to talk about why he chose to stay in New York, how he incorporates the Six Degrees of himself in to his family life and why he decided to take on his latest role in the horror film They/Them.
