Step back in time and explore the ghost towns of the Pacific Northwest, where remnants of the past reveal stories of grit, ambition, and change. During the late 1800s, settlers poured into Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, chasing gold, timber, and new beginnings. Many towns flourished briefly before being left behind when fortunes faded. From Silver City, Idaho, to Bodie, Washington, these once-bustling communities now stand quiet—old storefronts, saloons, and mining relics offering a rare glimpse into life on the rugged frontier. Some towns are easy to reach, while others invite adventure, tucked deep in mountain valleys or along forgotten dirt roads. These ghost towns are living history, each one a reflection of the perseverance that built the Northwest. Exploring them connects you to a time of discovery and determination while offering the thrill of adventure on the open road. Take your RV, follow the trails of the past, and uncover the gold rush stories that shaped the Pacific Northwest.Send us a textPlease follow the show so you never miss an episode. In Episode 417 Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger explore the ghost towns in and around the Quabbin Reservoir in central Massachusetts. In the 1930s, the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott, Massachusetts with a combined population of about 2,500 people had to disincorporate in order for the Swift River Valley to flood and form the reservoir needed for Boston's drinking water. What was left behind were scars, haunts, mysteries, and maybe a dirty secret many would rather not know about. Bigfoot. UFOs. Ghost stories. A campfire tends to inspire people to share spooky tales and thoughts of all things paranormal, and this week, Josh and I are having another paranormal campfire chat, this time at Oxbow Lake in the Adirondacks! Josh shares a story told to him by a coworker about two Bigfoot babies that crossed the road in front of two men late at night - for two consecutive nights. We also discuss the vastness of the universe and the horrifying variety of extraterrestrial life that could be out there, if aliens do indeed exist. And we talk about how the paranormal community can be full of sensationalized stories, interesting yet unfair debates, and the overall philosophy of fear. We embark on the first part of a series begun in 2024 by Jack Eidt who joined the artistic residency of Osceola Refetoff, a Canadian-American visual artist and photojournalist, in Antofagasta, Chile. Supported by SACO Cultural Corporation, this residency places a spotlight on the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, and its rich yet troubled history with mining. We delve into the environmental and social impacts of mining in this region, the historical context of Latin American exploitation, and the legacy of colonialism and neoliberal policies. Featuring poignant quotes from local authors and music that reflects Chile's cultural heritage, this episode is a profound exploration of eco-justice, history, and art. This episode sheds light on the difficult working conditions, pollution, and migratory phenomena that have shaped the Atacama's legacy. **Historical Context and Colonial Legacy** We journey through the historical context of mining in the Atacama, from the nitrate boom of the 19th century to the present-day lithium rush. The episode explores the economic motivations and political maneuverings that have led to the region's exploitation, including the devastating impact of colonialism and neoliberal policies. **Interview with Don Victor Loyola** One of the highlights of the episode is an interview with Don Victor Loyola, a former miner who has worked at the municipal museum in Maria Elena. **Indigenous Presence and Geoglyphs** The Atacama Desert is also home to a rich indigenous history, evidenced by the thousands of geoglyphs that dot the landscape. These ancient works of art, created by the region's early inhabitants, offer a glimpse into the spiritual and practical lives of the people who once thrived in this harsh environment. The episode explores the significance of these geoglyphs and their role in the transportation networks that connected ancient South American civilizations. Global automakers have joined their U.S. counterparts to warn about the impact of China's restrictions on critical minerals. The U.S. tariff rate on most imported steel and aluminum has doubled, as President Donald Trump ratchets up a global trade war. Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders is gambling that his hardline immigration stance will propel him to power in a snap election. And how Madrid's so-called "ghost towns" are being revitalized in an attempt to solve the Spanish capital's housing crisis. I know we have covered some toxic ghost towns before but there are just too many out there not to bring the subject back up! If you haven't seen the last Toxic Ghost Towns episode, definitely check it out! This time around I chose to discuss a place close to home in South Carolina. "Becca, I though y'all lived in Georgia!" We do, but right next to the Savannah river which connects us to South Carolina. So this is close to us as well. There was once a town called Ellenton, until the 1950s when the government decided it was the perfect place for a new nuclear site. The Savannah River Site was first created to produce materials for nuclear weapons and during its planning, the entire town of Ellenton as well as other nearby communities were forced out with a bit of compensation for their property as determined by the government. New Ellenton was created, where some of the residents would resettle, but they would never forget their old town and how it was basically taken from them, Ellenton has its own dirty history, steeped in racist politics and violence, however, and I could not help but dig into that before discussing the toxic materials left behind when SRS switched roles from nuclear weapons products to research and environmental concerns. We also discuss what was supposed to be a wealthy resort town funded by a newspaper, Times Beach, Missouri. The timing was off during this development nearign the Great Depression, and the town was mainly one of rural and low income housing. It didn't help matters that the location itself was a flood plain. These were not the reasons for the town being evacuated, however and the story of how it became toxic is also one to be learned from. Lastly we travel to Mailuu-Suu in Kyrgyzstan, where multiple uranium and heavy metals dump sites were left. Between the early 1940s-late 1960s, the soviet union mined uranium in mines there using forced labor for much of the time. Once it became less economical, they just left the poorly constructed tailings dams and uranium rock piles sitting there in the open. This area in particular sits on the hillside above the village Mailuu-Suu (currently populated with about 25,000 people). Since this time mutliple earthquakes, landslides, and heavy rainfall even have caused dams to fail and uranium to fall into the river below, contaminating the water, fish, crops, and ultimately the people living there. Illness and cancer rates have increased significantly here and education about avoiding the worst contaminated areas and clean-up of the site is slow going. I mentioned many sites, because along the entire country there are about 92 radioactive mining waste sites in total.Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! This week I remain in the Adirondacks to look at Bigfoot sightings near Sabbath Day Point in Warren County, New York! Two female hikers have rocks thrown at them by an unseen creature as they take the trail out of the woods, a man hears a Sasquatch talking to itself in a strange sing-song chatter and hears spooky screams on another night with his wife, a man camping with his friends sees Bigfoot walking up a hill at night as he gets up to use the bathroom, and a family sleeping in their cabin hears two creatures calling to each other from a nearby mountain. Wisconsin was home to many towns throughout its history that, for various reasons, simply don't exist anymore. Whether bypassed by the railroad, faded away after a loss of industry, or disbanded by its own residents, the towns have been wiped from the modern-day landscape, some with visible ruins as reminders, and others have literally nothing existing other than stories. Those stories are largely unknown to most people today, but they are no less fascinating because of it. The unique history of Wisconsin is only further enriched when these stories are brought to light, including connections to America's Founding Fathers, European royalty, and even an eventual Presidential assassin. Scott and Mickey look at the history of some of our state's more interesting ghost towns, and what, other than legacy, still remains today. In the opening banter, we discuss a new documentary about the Peshtigo Fire, and a certain town that a local media outlet called the "Most Haunted in Wisconsin." It's time for another Paranormal Campfire Chat with my friend Josh Diaz! This time we are camping deep in the Silver Lake Wilderness area of the Adirondacks, near the ghost town of Whitehouse. Just yards from our campsite is the Whitehouse Cemetery, a small collection of gravestones from the mid to late 1800s. Josh and I discuss Bigfoot, other spooky cemeteries we've visited in the Adirondack Mountains like the Savarie graves at John Pond in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness, and the cemetery at Burnt-Rossman State Forest in the Catskills, and try to explore the ghost town. We also reminisce about our first camping trip to the Silver Lake Wilderness and the strange light I saw outside my tent that night. Grab your favorite beverage and pull your chair up to the campfire as we discuss all things strange and spooky!Links!Follow us on Social media!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oddanduntold/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oddanduntoldWebsite: https://www.oddanduntold.comEmail me! : jason@oddanduntold.comMerch Store: https://oddanduntold.creator-spring.comBigfoot in the Adirondacks | Episode 45Ross Pond Bigfoot Encounter?Bear or Bigfoot? with Josh Diaz | Episode 4Paranormal Campfire Chat with Josh Diaz: Bigfoot Encounter at Good Luck Lake & MoreStrange Light in the WoodsAdirondack Camping - Silver Lake Wilderness 2019Check out Riversend, the band behind "Moonlight," our awesome theme music!Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/1yIwfeu2cH1kDZaMYxKOUe?si=NIUijnmsQe6LNWOsfZ2jPwRiversend Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RiversendbandRiversend Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/riversendband/

Welcome back, all you ghost hunters, history lovers, and seekers of the strange! On this episode of the 222 Paranormal Podcast, we're exploring a lesser-known but deeply haunted side of Ohio—its ghost towns. You may not think of Ohio when you think of eerie abandoned places, but the Buckeye State is filled with long-forgotten towns where whispers of the past still echo through the woods, fields, and empty buildings. These aren't just abandoned communities—they're home to some of the most chilling ghost stories in the Midwest. Ohio's ghost towns were once thriving villages, mining outposts, or utopian communities, now reduced to little more than crumbling foundations, moss-covered cemeteries, and overgrown roads. But in many of these towns, the dead didn't leave when the living moved out. First, we take you deep into the heart of Moonville, a remote 19th-century coal mining town hidden in the forests of Vinton County. Today, only a few foundations and the iconic Moonville Tunnel remain, but paranormal activity is rampant. The most famous spirit is that of a lantern-carrying ghost said to have been struck by a train—many visitors report seeing a glowing light bobbing in the distance and hearing disembodied footsteps echo through the tunnel at night. Is it the spirit of a railroad worker, or something more sinister? Next, we turn to Boston Mills, better known in urban legend circles as Helltown. Located in Summit County, this area was partially evacuated in the 1970s when the government acquired the land for the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. But the lack of public explanation left a vacuum that filled quickly with rumors: tales of Satanic cults, mutant creatures, ghostly children, and cursed roads. Is it just a case of folklore run wild, or are the spirits of the displaced still making their presence known? Then there's Utopia, Ohio, a riverside community in Clermont County founded by spiritualists in the 1800s. Designed to be a utopian society, the town's dreams were washed away—literally—by a tragic flood that killed dozens. Today, the few remaining structures and nearby riverbanks are said to be haunted by spirits who perished in that disaster, still searching for peace that eluded them in life. We'll also touch on lesser-known but equally spooky spots like Mineral, San Toy, and Tadmor, ghost towns with rich histories and reports of unexplained noises, shadowy figures, and strange lights. From the whispers of miners who never clocked out to the children heard laughing in the ruins of old schools, these towns may have lost their populations—but gained eternal residents. In this episode, we dive into: The true history behind Ohio's ghost towns and their rise and fall Eyewitness accounts from paranormal investigators and visitors Common threads between these locations that may explain their hauntings Why abandoned places seem to attract and hold spiritual energy If you're into legends, forgotten history, and spine-chilling stories that will have you double-checking your rearview mirror on the way home, this episode is for you. Ohio may seem quiet on the surface, but it has a haunted heart that beats beneath the soil. So light some sage, grab your gear, and join us on a journey through the haunted ghost towns of Ohio. You'll learn, you'll shiver—and you might just want to visit these places yourself… if you're brave enough. Some towns refuse to die. Long after their last residents have vanished, something remains — eerie voices, shadow figures, and legendary folktales. In this episode, we explore five of the most haunted ghost towns in America: Bannack, MT, a lawless gold rush town with a murderous past; Bodie, CA, with a legendary curse; Wonder Valley, CA, a weird stretch of desert; Riverton, AL, a town drowned beneath a reservoir but with a very real mystery; and Garnet, MT, which became a ghost town twice. If ghosts are real, these are the places they live. With special guest, filmmaker Adam Stilwell! Today, in honor of World Listening Day, we rebroadcast our story on renowned Australian sound composer, media artist and curator Lawrence English. This episode of gets deep into English's own listening practices as an artist, specifically a technique he calls Relational Listening. In fact, as you'll hear, he describes himself not as a sound maker but as a professional listener—that's how central the act of listening is to his artistic practice. In particular he talks about his reworking of an important work in the fields of musique concrète and field recording, Presque Rien by Luc Ferrari, and the recent premiere of Wave Fields, his own 12-hour durational sound installation for sleepers at Burleigh Heads in Queensland as part of the Bleach* Festival. Lawrence is interested in the nature of listening and the capability of sound to occupy a body. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English's work prompts questions of field, perception and memory. He investigates the politics of relation listening and perception, through live performance, field recordings and installation.
