It sounded so simple. We thought we'd watch every feature-length version of CAPE FEAR that wasn't CAPE FEAR (1962). Obviously there was Martin Scorsese's CAPE FEAR (1991), and less obviously, FORCE OF EVIL (not the film noir, but something much stranger and made for television), but our holy grail - the Bollywood version - proved elusive, while another version that shan't be named here (let's just say the title has three x's in it) ... well, we're far from prudish, but we have our limits. But nonetheless, we did what we do, and get into a rather robust disagreement over which cape we fear the most.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater was a multi-genre anthology. It aired over the CBS network almost daily from 1974 to 1982 and included 1.399 episodes. Episodes shared a time slot with the top-of-the-hour news summary. After subtracting the news and commercials, CBSRMT was left with a 45-minute format. The series was hosted, for the most part, by the late E.G. Marshall. The series creator and producer Himan Brown oversaw scripts and, though the daily format restricted the depth of sound effects, each show averaged 45 minutes. The writing was intelligent and the stories were thought-provoking. CBSRMT presented a bit of everything—science fiction, historical drama, ghost stories, horror—but the majority of episodes were murder mysteries, often with a supernatural bent. Because of the enormous volume of episodes, this archive could take up a LOT of time, to the detriment of other areas of this site. Therefore, I've decided to limit the archive to shows which best fit into the Plot Spot's chosen venue of sci-fi, horror, etc.

Dennis R Wiles FBC Arlington March 8, 2020 Second Sunday of Lent EASTER 2020 A Love Story The Force of Evil Genesis 3:1-24 (I will only read Genesis 3:1-9) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” The Tempter and Temptation SEPARATION: Where? Why? What? JUDGMENT: Curse, Guilt, Shame, Blame, Pain, Subjugation, Death PARADISE LOST: No going back! PROTEVANGELIUM: Hope and Love We believe SALVATION IS GOD’S GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE! All human beings are created in the image of God. However, each person is a sinner and is separated from God. Only through accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior can a person be restored into a relationship with God and receive the gift of eternal life.

Raaaaaaaaampage!!! When you have a character who is a badass killing machine, you want to set up a scenario when they're allowed to go all-out. Maybe not on the cogs in the wheel of an unjust system. The cogs Kovachs just gunned down in the corridors. What's interesting about media is that characters are rarely called upon to make the banal moral compromises most of us have to to pay rent. So when our dude starts killing every minimum wage worker and middle-manager trying to get by in a world run by disengaged Methuselahs it takes me a minute to realize we're supposed to be rooting for him. Ew. I'm also angry he only uses his gun's retractable bullet thing once in this whole series. Like…what's the point, man?

FORCE OF EVIL shows us that small-time graft is less dangerous than big-time rackets that have the law, the trust of the public, and the appearance of respectability on their side. Ultimately, the crime is the system itself, and the very philosophical underpinnings of capitalism are liable. And while Abraham Polonsky's courage in addressing these themes is remarkable, the degree of craft he exhibits as a rookie director is nothing short of astonishing. With Ira Wolfert, he co-authors a script so rich in its ability to expose the poverty of our dreams, and so stylized and impossibly catchy in its dialogue, that it can't help but feel more real than the real. With this script, and uncommon directing talent, Polonsky coaxes career-best performance from John Garfield, Thomas Gomez, and Marie Windsor. And with Director of Photography George Barnes, Polonsky frames some of the most beautiful and narratively rich shots in film history. FORCE OF EVIL may be the noir that most perfectly captures the ambivalent and fearful relationship Americans had to the great cities and great institutions that were the sclerotic backbone of the country after WWII.
