Today's guest is a trailblazer in the world of film and makeup artistry—John Caglione Jr. has been at the forefront of transforming the way we look at characters in film through makeup and prosthetics. His career spans decades, and his work has left an unforgettable mark on some of Hollywood's most iconic films. From behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live to winning an Oscar for the 1990 film “Dick Tracy”, John has created iconic looks on equally iconic characters. Other films John has worked on include Martin Scorcese's The Departed, American Gangster, Mona Lisa Smile and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His most famous work is perhaps his make-up on Heath Ledger's psychopathic Joker in the Award-Winning Box Office smash “The Dark Knight” released in 2008. On today's episode, John will be discussing his early years working on a SNL as well as being under the mentorship of legendary make-up artist Dick Smith, working with once-in-a-generation talents like Al Pacino and of course Heath Ledger, as well as detailing behind the scenes tales surrounding his process as a make-up artist.John Caglione Jr. - https://www.johncaglionejr.net/Daniel's Book "Breanne 1975" - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Breanne-1975-Daniel-Heaphy/dp/1804392030Connect with Daniel on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/d.heaphymedia/Connect with Daniel on Facebook - https://m.facebook.com/100067449105174/Connect with Daniel on LinkedIn - https://ie.linkedin.com/in/daniel-heaphy-4984381a3Daniel on IMDB - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm13256427/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_1_nm_7_q_DANIEL%2520HEAPHYEmail - creativelymepodcast@gmail.com“Creatively Me” Theme Music by Bukky - https://open.spotify.com/artist/1v7rqTLaVA3Ce6Q9R98dSq

Today's show features a conversation with Charles Burnett, who Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderbergh credit as one of America's greatest filmmakers.  His creative works tell personal and intimate stories – exploration of culture, relationships, social justice, mental illness, discrimination, and love. He was born in Mississippi in 1944 but moved to Watts in South Los Angeles in 1947. Killer of Sheep, based on his life in Watts,  was his student thesis film at UCLA but it wasn't until he was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2017 that it began to be seen. It was his first full-length feature and took five years to complete, and it set him apart, even at a young age, as a great filmmaker. The '60s were not necessarily kind to Black filmmakers and complicated music rights kept Killer of Sheep away from wide distribution until Steven Soderberg took it under his wing and helped restore it. He also cleared the music rights and found distribution.  It has since been admitted into the Library of Congress and called a national treasure. Other films from Charles include “The Annihilation of Fish” with James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave; My Brother's Wedding, The Glass Shield, and To Sleep With Anger starring Danny Glover. Martin Scorcese was quoted in a review by Daniel Borrero, saying, “Charles Burnett is one of the finest filmmakers in this country. His pictures speak in a unique voice that is uniquely and completely his own.  I am honored to be speaking with Charles Burnett and am grateful for his candor about the industry and his gracious depiction of unfolding events in his life. In part 3 of my three-episode take on Martin Scorcese and Nicholas Pileggi's masterpiece 'Goodfellas', we pick the film up just after the halfway point, which is Tommy's killing of Spider.  Test audiences and studio executives were completely discombobulated by the loss they felt of the breezy, funny, enjoyable glamorization of the gangster life that the first half of the film represents.  And the descent into depraved, violent madness was a truthfulness that not every audience...or cast member... could embrace immediately. This week, we are pulling an episode from the Patreon vault. Evan Hopper of the Quell and I do these types of episodes from time to time called Hollywood Babylon where to get into “interesting films”. Taxi Driver is an iconic film, a masterpiece by legendary filmmakers Martin Scorcese and Paul Schrader . Its influence can be seen all over the last several decades of film.  Lurking in the shadows you will find God's Lonely Man, pretty much a sleazy rip off, a movie that most may dismiss as pure exploitation, but for some reason, we can't seem to stop thinking about this mid-90's study in loneliness and depravity. This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he'd never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did Jeff land? I wonder if he liked it better than he likes subway poetry. This is the first of at least 2 episodes about Martin Scorcese's 1990 masterpiece 'Goodfellas'.  Let's be honest: it'll probably take three episodes to cover all the genius onscreen in this epitome of the perfect film. In this episode, I explore the film's roots in Nick Pileggi's classic non-fiction book 'Wiseguy', and the early involvement of vital creative participants in the film like producer Irwin Winkler, actors Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Paul Sorvino, and Lorraine Bracco, and production team members like Micheal Ballhaus and Thelma Schoonmaker. In Episode 2, we'll get into the film itself, covering the iconic scenes, the score, the film's reception and legacy, and more.

Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. Episode 2150: Jonathan Taplin on why American Exceptionalism lies in its Powers of Creativity

Keen On Democracy

So what's exceptional about America? According to the writer, film producer and scholar Jonathan Taplin, American exceptionalism lies its uniquely global cultural influence. For Taplin - the tour manager for Bob Dylan & producer of Martin Scorcese's masterpiece Mean Streets - this reflects what he calls America's right-brain power which dominated the world in the second half of the 20th century. Today, however, he says, left-brained tech magnates like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are all powerful and, as a consequence, are triggering an existential crisis of creativity in America. In this age of the algorithm, Taplin worries, the US will be just another unimaginative player in the global race to control the digital economy. Jonathan Taplin is a writer, film producer and scholar. He is the Director Emeritus of the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California and was a Professor at the USC Annenberg School from 2003-2016 in the field of international communication management and digital media entertainment. Taplin began his entertainment career in 1969 as Tour Manager for Bob Dylan and The Band. In 1973 he produced Martin Scorsese's first feature film, Mean Streets, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Between 1974 and 1996, Taplin produced 26 hours of television documentaries (including The Prize and Cadillac Desert for PBS) and 12 feature films including The Last Waltz, Until The End of the World, Under Fire and To Die For. His films were nominated for Oscar and Golden Globe awards and chosen for The Cannes Film Festival five times. In 1984 Taplin acted as the investment advisor to the Bass Brothers in their successful attempt to save Walt Disney Studios from a corporate raid. This experience brought him to Merrill Lynch, where he served as vice president of media mergers and acquisitions. In this role, he helped re-engineer the media landscape on transactions such as the leveraged buyout of Viacom. Taplin was a founder of Intertainer and has served as its Chairman and CEO since June 1996. Intertainer was the pioneer video-on-demand company for both cable and broadband Internet markets. Taplin holds two patents for video on demand technologies. Professor Taplin has provided consulting services on Broadband technology to the President of Portugal and the Parliament of the Spanish state of Catalonia and the Government of Singapore. Mr. Taplin graduated from Princeton University. He is a member of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and sits on the Author's Guild Council and the Board of the American Music Association. Mr. Taplin was appointed to the California Broadband Task Force and the City of Los Angles Technology and Innovation Council. He was named one of the 50 most social media savvy professors in America by Online College and one of the 100 American Digerati by Deloitte's Edge Institute.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators.
