The Pharisees have done all they can to get rid of Jesus and they thought that they had finally won. That is, until the 3rd day, the Sunday, when an angel rolled the stone of the tomb away. The Pharisees made up a story, but the story we celebrate on Easter Sunday is the one we heard from the disciples and the women about Jesus coming alive again. But which story do you believe? Tune in to hear the story of the risen Jesus from the Pharisees' perspective! To hear another episode about Jesus' resurrection and more of his appearances after he died, click here. For the full list of Easter themed episodes, click here. For all other episodes and more, check out our website at thewordonthestreetpodcast.com Follow Anna on her Facebook Page hereJoin The Word On The Street Podcast conversation on our Facebook group hereHere are the bible verses quoted in today's episode:Bible Passage: Matthew 23:27-28You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You're like tombs that have been whitewashed. On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth. That's what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good.Bible Passage: Matthew 28:1-15The Sabbath was over, and it was almost daybreak on Sunday when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 Suddenly a strong earthquake struck, and the Lord's angel came down from heaven. He rolled away the stone and sat on it. 3 The angel looked as bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards shook from fear and fell down, as though they were dead.5 The angel said to the women, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was nailed to a cross. 6 He isn't here! God has raised him to life, just as Jesus said he would. Come, see the place where his body was lying. 7 Now hurry! Tell his disciples he has been raised to life and is on his way to Galilee. Go there, and you will see him. This is what I came to tell you.”8 The women were frightened and yet very happy, as they hurried from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them and greeted them. They went near him, held on to his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said, “Don't be afraid! Tell my followers to go to Galilee. They will see me there.”11 While the women were on their way, some soldiers who had been guarding the tomb went into the city. They told the chief priests everything that had happened. 12 So the chief priests met with the leaders and decided to bribe the soldiers with a lot of money. 13 They said to the soldiers, “Tell everyone that Jesus' disciples came during the night and stole his body while you were asleep. 14 If the governor[a] hears about this, we will talk to him. You won't have anything to worry about.” 15 The soldiers took the money and did what they were told. The people of Judea still tell each other this story.Today's Questions: How do you work out whether what you hear is true or lies? How can this story be a comfort to you when you think about death and how might this story bring you sorrow when you think about death? Scientists might say that coming alive again after dying 3 days later is impossible. What might you say to them?

I don't know what you are talking about!”71 When Peter had gone out to the gate, another servant girl saw him and said to some people there, “This man was with Jesus from Nazareth.”72 Again Peter denied it, and this time he swore, “I don't even know that man!”73 A little while later some people standing there walked over to Peter and said, “We know you are one of them. We can tell it because you talk like someone from Galilee.”74 Peter began to curse and swear, “I don't know that man!”Right then a rooster crowed, 75 and Peter remembered that Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will say three times you don't know me.” Then Peter went out and cried bitterly.”Bible Passage: Luke 22:63-65“The men in charge of Jesus began poking fun at him, slapping him around. They put a blindfold on him and taunted, “Who hit you that time?” They were having a grand time with him.”Bible Passage: Mark 15:1-47At dawn's first light, the high priests, with the religious leaders and scholars, arranged a conference with the entire Jewish Council. After tying Jesus securely, they took him out and presented him to Pilate.2-3 Pilate asked him, “Are you the ‘King of the Jews'?”He answered, “If you say so.” The high priests let loose a barrage of accusations.4-5 Pilate asked again, “Aren't you going to answer anything? That's quite a list of accusations.” Still, he said nothing. Pilate was impressed, really impressed.6-10 It was a custom at the Feast to release a prisoner, anyone the people asked for. There was one prisoner called Barabbas, locked up with the insurrectionists who had committed murder during the uprising against Rome. As the crowd came up and began to present its petition for him to release a prisoner, Pilate anticipated them: “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews to you?” Pilate knew by this time that it was through sheer spite that the high priests had turned Jesus over to him.11-12 But the high priests by then had worked up the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas. Pilate came back, “So what do I do with this man you call King of the Jews?”13 They yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”14 Pilate objected, “But for what crime?”But they yelled all the louder, “Nail him to a cross!”15 Pilate gave the crowd what it wanted, set Barabbas free and turned Jesus over for whipping and crucifixion.16-20 The soldiers took Jesus into the palace (called Praetorium) and called together the entire brigade. They dressed him up in purple and put a crown plaited from a thornbush on his head. Then they began their mockery: “Bravo, King of the Jews!” They banged on his head with a club, spit on him, and knelt down in mock worship. After they had had their fun, they took off the purple cape and put his own clothes back on him. Then they marched out to nail him to the cross.21 There was a man walking by, coming from work, Simon from Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus. They made him carry Jesus' cross.22-24 The soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha, meaning “Skull Hill.” They offered him a mild painkiller (wine mixed with myrrh), but he wouldn't take it. And they nailed him to the cross. They divided up his clothes and threw dice to see who would get them.25-30 They nailed him up at nine o'clock in the morning. The charge against him—the king of the jews—was scrawled across a sign. Bible Passage: John 19:19-22It read:Jesus the Nazarene the king of the jews.20-21 Many of the Jews read the sign because the place where Jesus was crucified was right next to the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. The Jewish high priests objected. “Don't write,” they said to Pilate, “‘The King of the Jews.' Make it, ‘This man said, “I am the King of the Jews.”'”22 Pilate said, “What I've written, I've written.”Bible Passage: Luke 23:39-46One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: “Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!”40-41 But the other one made him shut up: “Have you no fear of God? You're getting the same as him. We deserve this, but not him—he did nothing to deserve this.”42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom.”43 He said, “Don't worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise.”44-46 By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasting three hours—a total blackout. The Temple curtain split right down the middle. Jesus called loudly, “Father, I place my life in your hands!” Then he breathed his last.Bible Passage: Mark 15:1-47Along with Jesus, they crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: “You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!”31-32 The high priests, along with the religion scholars, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: “He saved others—but he can't save himself! Messiah, is he? King of Israel? Then let him climb down from that cross. We'll all become believers then!” Even the men crucified alongside him joined in the mockery.33-34 At noon the sky became extremely dark. The darkness lasted three hours. At three o'clock, Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”35-36 Some of the bystanders who heard him said, “Listen, he's calling for Elijah.” Someone ran off, soaked a sponge in sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down.”37-39 But Jesus, with a loud cry, gave his last breath. At that moment the Temple curtain ripped right down the middle. When the Roman captain standing guard in front of him saw that he had quit breathing, he said, “This has to be the Son of God!”40-41 There were women watching from a distance, among them Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and Joses, and Salome. When Jesus was in Galilee, these women followed and served him, and had come up with him to Jerusalem.42-45 Late in the afternoon, since it was the Day of Preparation (that is, Sabbath eve), Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Jewish Council, came. He was one who lived expectantly, on the lookout for the kingdom of God. Working up his courage, he went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate questioned whether he could be dead that soon and called for the captain to verify that he was really dead. Assured by the captain, he gave Joseph the corpse.46-47 Having already purchased a linen shroud, Joseph took him down, wrapped him in the shroud, placed him in a tomb that had been cut into the rock, and rolled a large stone across the opening. Mary Magdalene and Mary, mother of Joses, watched the burial.Today's Questions: What are your thoughts about Jesus not defending himself? How does your heart respond when you hear this story?

Which is a place at the bottom of the Mount of Olives. Jesus went here often, enough times for Judas to know where they would be.Jesus told them, “Sit here while I pray.”33 Jesus took along Peter, James, and John. He was sad and troubled and 34 told them, “I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying. Stay here and keep awake with me.”35-36 Jesus walked on a little way. Then he knelt down on the ground and prayed, “Father,[e] if it is possible, don't let this happen to me! Father, you can do anything. Don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup.[f] But do what you want, and not what I want.”37 When Jesus came back and found the disciples sleeping, he said to Simon Peter, “Are you asleep? Can't you stay awake for just one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray that you won't be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak.”39 Jesus went back and prayed the same prayer. 40 But when he returned to the disciples, he found them sleeping again. They simply could not keep their eyes open, and they did not know what to say.41 When Jesus returned to the disciples the third time, he said, “Are you still sleeping and resting?[g] Enough of this! The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. 42 Get up! Let's go. The one who will betray me is already here.”Bible Passage: John 18:3-113-5 Judas had promised to betray Jesus. So he went to the garden with some Roman soldiers and temple police, who had been sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees. They carried torches, lanterns, and weapons. Jesus already knew everything that was going to happen, but he asked, “Who are you looking for?”They answered, “We are looking for Jesus from Nazareth!”Jesus told them, “I am Jesus!”[b] 6 At once they all backed away and fell to the ground.7 Jesus again asked, “Who are you looking for?”“We are looking for Jesus from Nazareth,” they answered.8 This time Jesus replied, “I have already told you that I am Jesus. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go. 9 Then everything will happen, just as I said, ‘I did not lose anyone you gave me.' ”10 Simon Peter had brought along a sword. He pulled it out and struck at Malchus, the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. 11  Jesus told Peter, “Put your sword away. I must drink from the cup[c] that the Father has given me.”Bible Passage: Luke 22:5151 “Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant's ear and healed it.Bible Passage: Matthew 26:55-56Jesus said to the mob, “Why do you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like a criminal? Day after day I sat and taught in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. 56 But all this happened, so that what the prophets wrote would come true.”All Jesus' disciples left him and ran away.Bible Passage: Mark 14:50-5250 All of Jesus' disciples ran off and left him. 51 One of them was a young man who was wearing only a linen cloth. And when the men grabbed him, 52 he left the cloth behind and ran away naked.Today's Questions: What do you do when you don't want to do something that you have to do? What do you think might have happened to the world if God had told Jesus that he would take the cup away and that he didn't have to die for the world's sins?

Jesus sent Peter and John off, saying, “Go prepare the Passover for us so we can eat it together.”9 They said, “Where do you want us to do this?”10-12 He said, “Keep your eyes open as you enter the city. A man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him home. Then speak with the owner of the house: The Teacher wants to know, ‘Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?' He will show you a spacious second-story room, swept and ready. Prepare the meal there.”13 They left, found everything just as he told them, and prepared the Passover meal.14-16 When it was time, he sat down, all the apostles with him, and said, “You've no idea how much I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you before I enter my time of suffering. It's the last one I'll eat until we all eat it together in the kingdom of God.”Bible Passage: Luke 22:17-2017-18 Taking the cup, he blessed it, then said, “Take this and pass it among you. As for me, I'll not drink wine again until the kingdom of God arrives.” 19 Taking bread, he blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, given for you. Eat it in my memory.” 20 He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant written in my blood, blood poured out for you.Bible Passage: John 13:1-30Just before the Passover Feast, Jesus knew that the time had come to leave this world to go to the Father. Having loved his dear companions, he continued to love them right to the end. It was suppertime. The Devil by now had Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, firmly in his grip, all set for the betrayal.3-6 Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron. When he got to Simon Peter, Peter said, “Master, you wash my feet?”7 Jesus answered, “You don't understand now what I'm doing, but it will be clear enough to you later.”8 Peter persisted, “You're not going to wash my feet—ever!”Jesus said, “If I don't wash you, you can't be part of what I'm doing.”9 “Master!” said Peter. “Not only my feet, then. Wash my hands! Wash my head!”10-12 Jesus said, “If you've had a bath in the morning, you only need your feet washed now and you're clean from head to toe. My concern, you understand, is holiness, not hygiene. So now you're clean. But not every one of you.” (He knew who was betraying him. That's why he said, “Not every one of you.”) After he had finished washing their feet, he took his robe, put it back on, and went back to his place at the table.12-17 Then he said, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You address me as ‘Teacher' and ‘Master,' and rightly so. That is what I am. So if I, the Master and Teacher, washed your feet, you must now wash each other's feet. I've laid down a pattern for you. What I've done, you do. I'm only pointing out the obvious. A servant is not ranked above his master; an employee doesn't give orders to the employer. If you understand what I'm telling you, act like it—and live a blessed life.18-20 “I'm not including all of you in this. I know precisely whom I've selected, so as not to interfere with the fulfillment of this Scripture:The one who ate bread at my tableWill stab me in the back.“I'm telling you all this ahead of time so that when it happens you will believe that I am who I say I am. Make sure you get this right: Receiving someone I send is the same as receiving me, just as receiving me is the same as receiving the One who sent me.”21 After he said these things, Jesus became visibly upset, and then he told them why. “One of you is going to betray me.”22-25 The disciples looked around at one another, wondering who on earth he was talking about. One of the disciples, the one Jesus loved dearly, was reclining against him, his head on his shoulder. Peter motioned to him to ask who Jesus might be talking about. So, being the closest, he said, “Master, who?”26-27 Jesus said, “The one to whom I give this crust of bread after I've dipped it.” Then he dipped the crust and gave it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot. As soon as the bread was in his hand, Satan entered him.“What you must do,” said Jesus, “do. Do it and get it over with.”28-29 No one around the supper table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that since Judas was their treasurer, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the Feast, or that he should give something to the poor.30 Judas, with the piece of bread, left. It was night.”Once Judas had left, Jesus taught on and on, as he knew it was his last chance. He gave them:Bible Passage: John 13:34“But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you.”Bible Passage: John 14:6“I am the way, the truth, and the life!” Jesus answered. “Without me, no one can go to the Father.Bible Passage: John 14:38“I tell you for certain before a rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't even know me.”Bible Passage: John 15:1I am the true vine.”Bible Passage: Luke 22:24-28”Within minutes they were bickering over who of them would end up the greatest. But Jesus intervened: “Kings like to throw their weight around and people in authority like to give themselves fancy titles. It's not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant. Today's Questions: What is the difference between doing chores because you have to and doing chores because you choose to? Why would you choose to do chores voluntarily?

Isn't he coming to the festival at all?”But the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where Jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him.Bible Passage: John 12:12The next day a large crowd was in Jerusalem for Passover. They heard that Jesus was coming for the festival.”Bible Passage: Matthew 21:2-11“Jesus told his disciples, “Go into the next village, where you will at once find a donkey and her colt. Untie the two donkeys and bring them to me. If anyone asks why you are doing this, just say, ‘The Lordneeds them.' He will at once let you have the donkeys.”So God's promise came true, just as the prophet had said,“Announce to the people    of Jerusalem: ‘Your king is coming to you! He is humble    and rides on a donkey. He comes on the colt    of a donkey.' ”The disciples left and did what Jesus had told them to do. They brought the donkey and its colt and laid some clothes on their backs. Then Jesus got on.If a king rode into town on a donkey it was a symbol of peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Many people spread clothes in the road, while others put down branches which they had cut from trees. Palms and clothes spread were a sign of goodness and victory. A king might ride into a city like that after defeating an enemy. There is celebration because Jesus is a king and is good and is the winner over sin. Some people walked ahead of Jesus and others followed behind. They were all shouting,“Hooray for the Son of David! God bless the one who comes    in the name of the Lord. Hooray for God    in heaven above!”When Jesus came to Jerusalem, everyone in the city was excited and asked, “Who can this be?”The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”Bible Passage: Zechariah 9:9Everyone in Jerusalem,    celebrate and shout!Your king has won a victory,    and he is coming to you.He is humble    and rides on a donkey;he comes on the colt    of a donkey.Bible Passage: Luke 19: 39-44Some Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, make your disciples stop shouting!”But Jesus answered, “If they keep quiet, these stones will start shouting.”When Jesus came closer and could see Jerusalem, he criedand said:It is too bad that today your people don't know what will bring them peace! Now it is hidden from them.”Today's Questions: Why did the people lay palm branches and their cloaks on the ground for Jesus? Why do you think Jesus wept for the people who were doing these kind things? What would you have done if you were there?

Martha was doing the serving, and Lazarus himself was there.Mary took a very expensive bottle of perfume and poured it on Jesus' feet. Apparently the bottle was worth 300 silver coins! It was perfume called nard, or spikenard, which I have some essential oil and it smells great, very earthy. My bottle is 15mL with a lid but Mary's bottle was 350mL with no lid!Mary wiped Jesus' feet with her hair, and the sweet smell of the perfume filled the house.A disciple named Judas Iscariot was there. He was the one who was going to betray Jesus, and he asked,“Why wasn't this perfume sold for 300 silver coins and the money given to the poor?” Judas did not really care about the poor. He asked this because he carried the moneybag and sometimes would steal from it.Bible Passage: Matt 26:10-16Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said:“Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing for me. You will always have the poor with you, but you won't always have me. She has poured perfume on my body to prepare it for burial. You may be sure that wherever the good news is told all over the world, people will remember what she has done. And they will tell others.”Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve disciples. He went to the chief priests and asked, “How much will you give me if I help you arrest Jesus?” They paid Judas 30 silver coins, and from then on he started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus.Bible Passage: John 12:9-11A lot of people came when they heard that Jesus was there. They also wanted to see Lazarus, because Jesus had raised him from death. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus. He was the reason that many of the people were turning from them and putting their faith in Jesus.Today's Questions: What do you think of Mary's gift to Jesus? Would you have done that for Jesus if you were there? How do you think Jesus would have felt receiving that gift? When Jesus was on the cross and if he had got a smell of the perfume, what might have been going through his mind?

Then everyone in the city, no matter who they were, dressed in sackcloth.6 When the king of Nineveh heard what was happening, he also dressed in sackcloth; he left the royal palace and sat in dust. 7-9 Then he and his officials sent out an order for everyone in the city to obey. It said:None of you or your animals may eat or drink a thing. Each of you must wear sackcloth, and you must even put sackcloth on your animals. You must also pray to the Lord God with all your heart and stop being sinful and cruel. Maybe God will change his mind and have mercy on us, so we won't be destroyed.10 When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.”Our sins are a blockage for us being friends with God.The only way to get rid of the block is to say sorry and repent for our sins.Bible Passage: Matt 4:17Then Jesus started preaching, “Repent! Turn back to God! The kingdom of heaven will soon be here.”Bible Passage: 1 John 1:9“But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.”Today's Questions: How do you feel when you have done something wrong, something terrible, and you wish you hadn't done it? What do you do? If you are sorry for your sins, spend some time praying together right now, wherever you are, confessing your sins to God, repenting and turning back to God.

Today's festival is a bridge between the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle that comes to a close today and the Lent-Easter cycle that begins in several days. On a high mountain Jesus is revealed as God's beloved Son, echoing the words at his baptism. This vision of glory sustains us as Jesus faces his impending death in Jerusalem. We turn this week to Ash Wednesday and our yearly baptismal journey from Lent to Easter. Some churches put aside the alleluia at the conclusion of today's liturgy. This word of joy will be omitted during the penitential season of Lent and will be sung again at Easter.Scripture Readings: Exodus 24:12-18; Psalm 2; Matthew 17:1-9

What were the expectations of those who sang Jesus' praises that day.  Of the women who followed Jesus during his ministry in Galilee, and then to Jerusalem for the Passover festival?  And the children who came along as well?  What might their expectations have been of Jesus as Messiah-King?

This Sunday we will hear the story of Andrew's brother: Peter – The Fickle Follower. With his propensity to speak first and think later, I so get Peter! It's not easy for an extrovert to remain silent or bite one's tongue. One's words can gush out like water from a fire hydrant… and do untold amounts of damage! Peter wants to prove himself worthy of being Jesus' right-hand man. But the harder he tries, the more he keeps messing up. Think of when he hopped out of the boat amid the swell, took a few steps towards Jesus, and then sank like a rock! Even after three years with Jesus and the others, Peter is still making impulsive promises. At the last Passover meal, Jesus talks of imminent betrayal – and of being deserted by his disciples. With characteristic boldness, Peter declares to Jesus: “I will lay down my life for you” (Jn 13:37). But as the night wore on, Peter's resolve ran dry. Before the dawn crowing of the rooster, Peter denied having anything to do with Jesus… three times. Yet Jesus did not give up on Peter! This is good news for every one of us. Jesus never gives up on us! His mercy triumphs over judgment. He is always walking towards us to do us good – to forgive us, to restore us, to grow us, to keep loving on us, and to bring us into his story for his world. A widely held attitude in many cultures: “Three strikes and you're out!” I'm glad that Jesus is not like that! Shalom! Pr Rolly

As our knowledge of Jesus grows, we learn to see his life and teachings with new perspectives. New light of many different hues and shades is shed on his teachings and the lessons we apply to our lives. We experience new freedom as we learn to see the different shades of Divine Love. Of the approximate 90 times Jesus is addressed directly in the New Testament, roughly 60 refer to him as “teacher,” “rabbi,” “great one,” or “master” (like a “schoolmaster”). What do those terms mean? When it was originally written, the word “Rabbi” did NOT mean “Jewish clergyperson”. Nor did that term appear in the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament). It was JUST coming into existence as a term for use during Jesus' time. It meant “one who bore spiritual authority”. To be a rabbi in the first century meant to be a teacher who was crafting a new approach to Hebrew texts, traditions, and interpretations. And as a rabbi, Jesus was a radical revolutionary. He challenged their norms. Teachers have “rules” that they live by. Jesus was no different. But Jesus' rules were all about one thing - Love. Love God, Love Yourself, and Love Others. Love makes room for more love. What religious rules are not grounded in love? Why might those rules be a barrier to God instead of a pathway? Jesus did not issue a list of rules to be checked off a “list”. Instead, he embodied the rule of love as a way of life to be followed. Instead of telling us what to “do and not do,” he asked us to be Love as he was Love. What is a religious rule you wish didn't exist? What is your favorite “rule” that Jesus broke as he loved all people? How might you embody that rule in your own life? West Church | Mooresville, Lake Norman, North CarolinaPastor Andrea Smith

This Sunday: Caiaphas – Threatened How do you handle it when your dreams, plans or goals get blocked by circumstances beyond your control? I often get stewed up inside.  As the saying goes: “Blocked goals lead to frustration.” But then we need to ask: “Who is in control?  Am I the master of the universe, or can I defer to the One who is?” Following Jesus' miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus' popularity is skyrocketing. Members of the Sanhedrin are at their wits end about what to do with him. They fear losing control over the Jewish people. This Sunday we'll hear the story of Caiaphas – the Jewish High Priest who was instrumental in getting Jesus killed. Threatened by Jesus, Caiaphas comes up with an elegant solution to deal with him. Ironically, his prophetic words are fulfilled in a way he never expected. After Jesus' resurrection, Caiaphas and his father-in-law Annas try to shut down the spread of the Gospel, but to no avail (see Acts 4:5-21, 5:17-42, 7:1). Nothing can stop the Holy Spirit enacting God's restoration plans for his world. Like Caiaphas, we can reject Jesus – and seek to write our own story. Or we can join Jesus and be part of God's good news story for his world. Joy in Jesus! Pr Rolly

Pr Rolly

In today's episode, I share 6 affirmations for BIPOC religious abuse survivors trying to manage their hearts and minds during this Lent/Easter season. So many BIPOC trauma healing spaces center on religion which alienates those of us trying to heal from racial and religious trauma.  If you need words of encouragement from a religious abuse survivor to religious abuse survivors, this episode is for you. The 6 affirmations I discuss today are: 1. I can connect with and surrender to my own sovereignty as the leader of my life. 2. I do not need to be religious to be deeply rooted in my culture & ancestry. 3. I am not a sinner, I'm a human doing human things and my humanity is sacred. 4. I am allowed to reject the notion that God/the Bible can be both abuser & healer. 5. I will honor my nervous system and give myself permission to unplug & disengage when I'm triggered. 6. I will not rush my trauma healing to fit other people's expectations and timelines. Visit the podcast show notes here to see links for everything discussed in this episode.

Moment of Clarity With Rev. Lorrie Daly-Price

Last week we reflected on the image of Jesus as the good shepherd and us as the wandering, stubborn sheep. This week the image used draws us even closer to Jesus with the image of the vine. We are extended from the vine as the branches. We are rooted in and draw strength and life from Jesus. We are intimately connected to Jesus. If we were cut off from Jesus, we would perish like a branch chopped off from Jesus, we would perish like a branch chopped off from its vine. How might we extend to others this life-giving, loving connection with Jesus?    (paraphrased from Gathering, Lent/Easter 2021, page 23.)

John 1:1-18 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. Dennis R Wiles FBC Arlington March 8, 2020 Second Sunday of Lent EASTER 2020 A Love Story The Force of Evil Genesis 3:1-24 (I will only read Genesis 3:1-9) Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” The Tempter and Temptation SEPARATION: Where? Why? What? JUDGMENT: Curse, Guilt, Shame, Blame, Pain, Subjugation, Death PARADISE LOST: No going back! PROTEVANGELIUM: Hope and Love We believe SALVATION IS GOD’S GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE! All human beings are created in the image of God. However, each person is a sinner and is separated from God. Only through accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior can a person be restored into a relationship with God and receive the gift of eternal life.

With this episode author Mike Aquilina begins his twice-monthly series on the lives, times, and works of the early Church Fathers. The Way of the Fathers begins with answers to basic questions. What is fatherhood? And who are the Fathers? The answers come from sources ancient (Vincent of Lerins) and modern (Ratzinger) — theologians who draw from the still more ancient words and patterns of biblical religion. Mapping the Way of the Fathers, Aquilina touches upon the achievements of the early Christians, especially their establishment of the canons of Scripture, liturgy, and Church order. The Fathers made us who we are. This podcast begins our pilgrimage to give them the honor that’s their due. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family

“Are you the adult you want your child to become?” ~ Dr. Brene Brown High emotions and the advent of adolescence seem to go hand in hand.  Instead of getting caught up into our children's emotion and the drama that may ensue, parents need to truly be “the adult in the room” and be an example of how to deal with strong feelings in a appropriate way.  To do this, we parents need to be self-aware and conscious of our own woundedness and need for healing. Only then can we be an example to our children and a source of hope sending the message that they CAN overcome.  We need to empathize with our child and empower them to master their emotions while using their intellect and will to act, thus integrating all their faculties to act virtuously. It's hard for parents to teach pre-teens and teens how to handle drama, but this is the job of hard-working, devoted parents! Read along during the Podcast with Maria's blog entitled: The Queen of Heaven: Why Does The Church Celebrate Easter? http://doubleportioninheritance.blogspot.com/2012/02/queen-of-heaven-why-does-church.html Ever since I was a child, I was erroneously taught by the Catholic nuns that our Messiah fasted in the wilderness during the forty days known as “Lent.” This season would commence on “Ash Wednesday,” and it would culminate on “Easter Sunday,” according to Catholic tradition. It was not until the year 2002 that I discovered these traditions of Ash Wednesday, Lent & Easter stemmed from ancient Babylonian religion, and were adopted into Christianity by Rome. Four years later, in 2006, I found myself stunned as I read Luke 4:19, where our Messiah declared “The Acceptable Year of YaHuWaH.” I understood in that moment that our Messiah, Yahuwshuwa fasted during the forty days of repentance or “Teshuva,” leading up to Yom Kippur. Even though Luke’s gospel does not tell us what time of year this was, there are enough clues in the language of Isaiah 61 to indicate Yom Kippur typology. This 2018 season of Lent has forever changed my life. In following the She Reads Truth Lent Study, I have been reading through the miraculous book of Exodus. In this God has revealed so much to me about how He works in the details and offers His children pure freedom from captivity. In my little Navy housing living room I shared some of my experiences in these encounters with two of my heroes and returning guests to the show, Tiffany Chen and Mikia Carter. They too have been partaking in the Lenten season as well. In this episode we discuss the story of Moses, Easter memories, and reflect upon how God has moved within us during this intentional time. This is not your traditional episode, but it is overflowing joy and pure awe for the King. Happy Easter my Still With You sisters (and bros, I sincerely hope you are out there listening too).
