On Ron's Amazing Stories this week we open with a look at the history of Western films, from the silent era to modern times. Our featured story is Lux Radio Theater's radio adaptation of the 1951 Western film Rawhide, starring Tyrone Power and Susan Hayward. The radio adaptation features Jeffrey Hunter and Donna Reed in the lead roles, with the supporting cast played by the actors from the Gunsmoke radio series. Our story tells the tale of Tom Owens, the clean-cut and sophisticated gentleman son of J. C. Owens of the Overland Mail Company. His father wants his son to learn the business from the ground up, so he sends him west to a remote relay station, Rawhide Pass, to take lessons from stationmaster Sam Todd. EPISODE 55 - “Favorite Classic Films of the 1950s ” - 09/30/2024 ** This episode is sponsored brought to you by BetterHelp. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** The 1950s was a real transitional decade for classic films. As we got further away from WW2, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. Films took on a grittier, more realistic feel, and the subject matters were darker and more controversial. It was the decade that sparked masterpieces like “Sunset Boulevard,” “All About Eve,” “From Here To Eternity,” “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Anatomy of a Murder,” “ Strangers on a Train,” “Shane,” and “High Noon.” Listen as Steve and Nan talk about some special 1950s films that inspire them. EPISODE 47 - “Laird Cregar (Star of the Month) ” - 08/05/2024 With his sad, dark eyes, hulking frame, and aristocratic speech, actor LAIRD CREGAR often played the complex villain tortured by a sinister past or an unrequited love that turns into an obsession. No one played characters with suppressed anguish, a tortured soul, or darkness lingering beneath the surface better than he did. While he only made 16 films in a period of five years, he is unforgettable. His desire to be thin was his achilles heel that turned tragic. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Hugo Morley, grandson of actor Robert Morley. Depending on what age you are and what country you grew up in, you might know Robert Morley for different things. If you are an American, you know him from his stint as the spokesman for British Airways or possibly the film Who Is Killing The Great Chef's of Europe with George Segal and Jacqueline Bisset. It was fascinating to find out from Hugo, that Robert actually had a lot of leeway in the BA commercials direction. But if you grew up in England or Australia, you might know Robert Morley from the stage where he performed in about 100 films and starred in/wrote many plays. His career spanned more than sixty years and in fact, his first film role garnered an Academy Award nomination in 1939 as King Louis XVI in Marie Antoinette, starring Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power. That's one hell of a debut. Hugo was open with us and told us about (free) trips he took with his grandfather and family thanks to British Airways, of meals he shared with him and time spent in Robert Morley's back garden. There was swimming and cigars….for Robert, not Hugo. We also learn about Hugo's theater critic/actor father, Sheridan Morley who was quite well known in England. We learn about his influence on the musical Les Miserables, how an interview with Carol Channing led to Hugo becoming her Godmother and how Yul Brenner played a part in their relationship. Along the way we talk about everyone from Eli Wallach to David Tomlinson, Griff Rhys Jones, to Joanna Lumley and more. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast and everyone has a story.
Another slam dunk from director Billy Wilder, Witness for the Prosecution is the combined genius of humorous Wilder, a brilliant cast, and the world's favorite mystery writer, Agatha Christie. Witness for the Prosecution may not be the most famous of Agatha Christie's film adaptations, but it was her favorite one! Skillfully interwoven flashbacks, colorful supporting characters, and a great ending make for one of the best courtroom dramas ever to be shown on the silver screen! Listen to Robin and Lisa gush about another favorite.https://www.instagram.com/realoldreels/
Helen Walker's Hollywood career was short and marked by an offscreen tragedy, but she made memorable appearances in comedies and dramas opposite co-stars like Fred MacMurray and Tyrone Power. Then she reprises her big screen role as The Old Gold Comedy Theatre presents Brewster's Millions (originally aired on NBC on March 25, 1945).

The Cru examine tales of one of WebEater's childhood heroes: Zorro. Is pulp a guilty pleasure, or is there literary merit in tales designed only to delight us? Stories begin at the 17:45 mark and include Zorro on the Z; the far future of the rodentverse; a fan of Zorro, who brings a girl back to his apartment; and women showing up for each other. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Zorro The black-masked, black-caped master swords- man and avenger of old California was the creation of Johnston McCulley. He first appeared in 1919 in the magazine story 'The Curse of Capistrano'. His 'trademark' is the letter Z, which he slashes on the clothes or skin of his enemies. He soon transferred to the cinema screen, where he has been played by such actors as Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power and Antonio Banderas. His name is Spanish for 'fox', from a word that originally meant 'cunning'.Check out our website for a featured story from this week's episode, and be sure to follow us on Instagram (if that's your sort of thing). Today our guest is Ruta Lee, one of Hollywood's most multifaceted and top-notched civic contributors. Born in Montreal, Lee is the daughter of a Lithuanian tailor. While at Hollywood High, Lee's career in show business began at the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre… as an usherette, then candy girl. She was quickly promoted to box office cashier and just as quickly fired. Her dancing was better than her math. She vowed to return to that famous courtyard (years later, talent and serendipity placed her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, directly in front of that box office from which she was fired). Soon after, she was signed by MGM as the youngest of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and subsequently in Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn, as Tyrone Power's secret love in Witness for the Prosecution, and Frank Sinatra's leading lady in Sergeant's Three, to name but a few of the many films in her credits. Simultaneously, Lee launched into television, with over 2000 appearances on shows from Perry Mason to Power Rangers, Twilight Zone to Murder She Wrote, Hogan's Heroes to Love Boat, and Roseanne. Lee was also co-host on NBC's High Rollers with Alex Trebek, and a regular on Hollywood Squares with Peter Marshall. Ms Lee's connection to her roots in Lithuania, stem from her grandmother, whose release from Siberia made international headlines, and the subject in her recently released, best-selling memoir title Consider Your Ass Kissed. A title referencing the actions required and gratitude for the monumental effort to bring her family to America from Russia during the Cold War. At the time her grandmother made all the news and even went on Johnny Carson with her. Lee is highly acclaimed for her leadership role in The Thalians, a charitable organization which is committed to good mental health from pediatric to geriatric. She has been either chairman or president for over 45 years… roles exchanged between herself and Debbie Reynolds. The Thalians honored Ruta Lee for her dedication to mental health, where she joined the ranks of previous honorees, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Mary Tyler Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Lansbury and and Clint Eastwood, to name just a few. Recently, the legendary actress received Lithuania's highest honor from President Valdas Adamkus at a magnificent ceremony in the Vilnius Presidential Palace. Her famous Hollywood Estate served as the perfect backdrop to receive a visit from the Lithuanian President and First Lady, with Lithuanian Ambassador To the US Audra Plepyte in attendance. The President and First Lady remarked on how the visit to the estate gave them the rare experience of Hollywood's golden era, as the former home of entertainment icons, Rita Hayworth and Orson Wells. In addition to the Hollywood luminaries that were imagined to have gathered at galas in the estates palacios living room, or having dinners of 20 or more in the dinning hall, as well as the thought of Ms Hayworth and Mr Wells themselves making an entrance on the grand staircase, is like stepping back in time, as mental images of Citizen Kane come to mind. www.rutalee.com https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/consider-your-ass-kissed-ruta-lee/1139109864

For this month's theme of ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY we're spending our Mondays looking at the film roots of today's ADOLESCENT POWER FANTASY and the character of Zorro is a fine place to start. Dual identities, protector of everyday citizens, son of wealth. Hey, Zorro sounds like he might be kind of influential to that one guy in Gotham City with the ears. The sword on sword action goes pleasantly hard in Rouban Mamoulian's 1940 adventure film “The Mark of Zorro” starring the super hunk Tyrone Power and the sneering swag of Basil Rathbone. Seriously, this movie might have the best sword fight we've ever seen. Seek it out and then seek out this discussion. In 1948 author Graham Greene was in Vienna getting a tour of the city, its back alleys, less-reputable nightclubs, and even its sewers. He was also introduced by actress Elizabeth Montagu to Peter Smolka, the central European correspondent for The Times. Greene was working on a novella that would become a screenplay called The Third Man. Greene sold the film rights to producers Alexander Korda and David O'Selznick. In the story a man named Holly Martins comes to Vienna to accept a job with his friend Harry Lime, only to learn that Lime has died. Martins is a writer. He's told Lime was killed by a car while crossing the street. At Lime's funeral, Martins meets two British Royal Military Police: Sergeant Paine, a fan of Martins' books, and Major Calloway. Martins thinks the death is suspicious, so he stays in Vienna to investigate the matter. Orson Welles was cast as Lime with longtime Mercury Theater friend Joseph Cotton cast as Martins. Principal photography began in Vienna in early November of 1948 and lasted for six weeks. The rest was done around London and completed by March of 1949. Then-unknown composer Anton Karas was hired to create the musical score, performing it on a zither. The film was released in the UK in September of 1949, quickly becoming that year's most popular. When released in the U.S. audiences loved it. Time wrote that the film was "crammed with cinematic plums that would do Hitchcock proud—ingenious twists and turns of plot, subtle detail, full-bodied bit characters, atmospheric backgrounds that become an intrinsic part of the story, a deft commingling of the sinister with the ludicrous, the casual with the bizarre.” At the 1951 Academy Awards, the film took home the award for Best Black and White Cinematography, while at the British equivalent, it won for Best British Film. In the meantime Welles and Tyrone Power made The Black Rose in 1950, directed by Henry Hathaway. Welles played Mongolian warrior Bayan of the Hundred Eyes. Hathaway, who liked Welles, later said the casting was poor, with Welles purposely outwitting people during shooting. While in England making The Third Man, Orson Welles became acquainted with Harry Alan Towers. Towers was a thirty-year-old radio producer whose company, Towers of London, was heavily into syndicated productions in British, American, Australian, and Canadian markets. His anthology series Secrets of Scotland Yard had proven that there was a lucrative market for high-end entertainment and, in Welles, he saw a personality and a talent that could quickly make his production company a leading one. Towers and Greene had the same literary agent. Finding out that Greene hadn't sold Harry Lime's character rights when he sold the screenplay, Towers quickly bought the rights to the character with plans to put a syndicated radio series into production. Welles signed with Towers to produce The Adventures of Harry Lime. They were prequel stories showcasing some of the more good-hearted things Harry Lime was supposed to have done. Only sixteen of the episodes were acquired and broadcast by the BBC. It was the first time that the BBC broadcast episodes of a dramatic series that it did not produce. The full fifty-five episodes were syndicated to radio stations in the U.S. Welles is credited as the author of ten scripts, including the first episode, “Too Many Crooks” which aired on August 3rd, 1951. The fifth episode was called, “Voodoo,” something Orson Welles had a lot of experience with, dating back to his time in South America during World War II.
In 1947, wanting to bring Macbeth to film, Welles teamed with producer Charles K. Feldman to convince Herbert Yates, President of Republic Pictures, to finance. Welles guaranteed to deliver Macbeth on a budget of seven-hundred thousand dollars. When some members of Republic's board expressed misgivings on the project, Welles agreed to personally pay any amount over the initial ask. He brought in Irish actor Dan O'Herlihy as Macduff, and cast former child star Roddy McDowall as Malcolm. To cast Lady Macbeth, Welles visited longtime friend and radio legend Jeanette Nolan. The two had known each other since the 1930s in New York. Nolan and her husband, fellow actor John McIntire, were excited to work with Orson. Welles made several changes to Shakespeare's original, like adding significance to the witches. They were played by two other Hollywood radio legends: Peggy Webber, and Lurene Tuttle. Welles expressed frustrations with wardrobes and the tight schedule. He had the cast pre-record all their dialogue. Locations were leftover sets from westerns normally made at Republic. The entire production was done in twenty-three days in July of 1947. In September, Welles signed on to star in Gregory Ratoff's Black Magic. Shooting would take place in Rome. He wouldn't return until 1948. Republic initially trumpeted the film as an important work, entering it in the 1948 Venice Film Festival. It was abruptly withdrawn after poor comparisons with Lawrence Olivier's version of Hamlet, also being screened. LIFE Magazine gave the film a terrible review in October of 1948, saying that Welles' days as the “boy wonder” were long over. When he returned from Europe in the Spring, Welles cut twenty minutes from the film at Republic's request and recorded narration to cover some gaps. But when finally released, it too was called a disaster. In July of 1948 Welles signed on to co-star with Tyrone Power in the Italian film, Prince of Foxes. The film would be released in December of 1949. Welles' last appearance in the 1940s on American radio was in a pre-recorded segment on Mail Call over the Armed Forces Radio Service, on October 13th, 1948. Now thirty-three years old, Orson Welles had enough of Hollywood. He was in deep debt and needed to move to Europe, full-time. His first main stop would be in Vienna, to star with Joseph Cotton in a new film called The Third Man.
