And now for something completely different... featuring one of past guests & fellow authors Ace Atkins, Megan Abbott, & William Boyle's dearest friends. The first half of this week's episode with Oxford, Mississippi based ADVENTURE TIME & SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS screenwriter, voice actor, & author Jack Pendarvis is a freewheeling anything goes conversation about writing, shovels, William Faulkner cosplay, hitchhiking with butter knives, Saint Augustine, showers, & anything else that popped into our heads. Taking a look at two films about the creative process in the more classically Watch With Jen formatted second half of this discussion, we investigate two of Jack's favorite movies in director Anthony Mann's classic musical biopic THE GLENN MILLER STORY & one of Pedro Almodovar's greatest masterworks, PAIN AND GLORY. This season, I'm aiming to sprinkle in some more casual conversations with artists of all backgrounds into our traditional friendly analytic approach because right now, it feels like we're all so isolated, stressed, & wary that I'm hoping these occasional offbeat episodes might spark a little joy, discovery, & creativity for you along the way as well.Originally Posted on Patreon (4/7/25) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/126066237Shop Watch With Jen logo Merchandise in Logo Designer Kate Gabrielle's Threadless ShopDonate to the Pod via Ko-fi Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

Twisty, engaging, & filled with colorful performances, the Soviet paranoia of the Cold War '80s fueled the plotlines of so many first-rate films that New York Times bestselling author Ace Atkins & I vividly remember from the Reagan/Bush era. And with the next two books that Atkins is set to release revolving around spies &/or the '80s, it's the perfect time to revisit a quartet of spy-centric releases, including THE FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN, TARGET, JUMPIN' JACK FLASH, & NO WAY OUT in this inquisitive & nostalgic episode. Touching on several other films along the way & offering great insights into the evolution of both the spy genre & the way that attitudes shifted in audiences & Hollywood from the '60s through the '80s, Atkins fans, Gen Xers, & film lovers will find much to dig into in this sparkling conversation. Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded June 13, 1992 while on tour for the Spenser novel, “Double Deuce.” Mystery and suspense author Robert B. Parker died at the age of 77 on January 18, 2010. His career encompassed 38 novels in his popular Spenser detective series during his life, with another three published posthumously, plus nine novels in the Jesse Stone series, four in the Cole and Hitch series, six in the Sonny Randall series, nine other novels, and four books of non-fiction. There were two Probabilities interviews with Robert B. Parker. The first time, co-hosted with Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in Parker's hotel room in the spring of 1981. At the time he'd just switched publishers and with Looking for Rachel Wallace and then Early Autumn, he was finally having success as an author. His success would explode exponentially over the next eleven years, and by the time of this interview. Robert Parker had written an additional ten Spenser novels, the TV series Spencer for Hire starring Robert Urich had run for three seasons, and a spin-off, A Man Called Hawk had had a 13 episode run. In addition, he'd completed an unfinished Philip Marlowe novel by Raymond Chandler, and followed that up with a sequel. Four Robert Urich Spenser filmswere produced after the interview was recorded, each based on a different Spenser novel by Parker. Three Spenser TV movies, based on three other novels with Joe Mantagna as Spenser ran from 1999 to 2001. A 2020 Netflix film with Mark Wahlberg, Spencer: Confidential, was based on a Spenser novel written by another author, Ace Atkins, who continued the series. In the interview, Robert Parker insists he won't start other series. In fact, of course, he did. The Sonny Randall series, featuring a female former cop turned private eye; the Cole & Hitch series of western detective novels, and the Jesse Stone series, featuring the police chief of a small town in Massachusetts. There have also been nine made for television films starting Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone. This interview was digitized, remastered and re-edited in January 2024 by Richard Wolinsky. The post Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), The Spenser novels, 1992 appeared first on KPFA.

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Vanessa Veselka, whose latest novel is “The Great Offshore Grounds,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. “The Great Offshore Grounds” is an epic novel about two sisters on a quest to find themselves during the upheavals of the current era. It's a detailed examination of feminism, of lives lived on the edge, and of life in the parts of America we hear little about. Vanessa Veselka's first novel, “Zazen,” has just been reissued by Vintage. Published by a small press over a decade ago, it looks at the travails of young adults set against the backdrop of an ever-increasing political violence in America. Both novels are available in trade paperback. Vanessa Veselka, the daughter of journalist Linda Ellerbee, left home at the age of fifteen and early in her life lived the life of a homeless vagabond, eventually becoming a professional musician in the Pacific Northwest, a union organizer, and a writer of fiction. Complete 51-minute interview. Bookwaves Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) is known today as one of the most important writers of detective fiction during the final quarter of the 20th Century. His wise cracking Boston private eye, Spenser, Spenser's sidekick Hawk, and girlfriend Susan Silverman have become iconic figures. When Parker died at the age of 77 in 2010, 38 Spenser novels had been published. Two more came out posthumously, and a third was completed by his agent. Novelist Ace Atkins has now written nine more Spenser novels. The series Spenser for Hire, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks ran for three seasons, and Brooks had a spin-off that ran for half a season, A Man Called Hawk. Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. Parker was on tour for his novel, Early Autumn, and marked the first Probabilities interview with a mystery writer. His career hadn't advanced under his first publisher, Houghton-Mifflin, and he switched to Delacorte, and Parker's audience began to grow. This was his seventh Spenser novel, and his eighth over all (Wilderness had come out late in 1980 and Looking for Rachel Wallace was his first under the new contract. At the time of the interview, his first five novels were all out of print in paperback. Though he says in the interview his detective fiction would be limited to the Spenser series, eventually he branched out to write another series of nine books featuring Jesse Stone, a former LAPD detective who becomes the police chief in a small New Enngland town, and six novels featuring Sunny Randall, a female detective. Eventually there was some crossover between the three series. Along the way, he also wrote a handful of westerns, the Cole and Hitch series, and two books featuring Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlow. When Parker died in 2010 of a sudden heart attack, the family decided to let other writers continue the Spenser, Stone and western series, which go on to this day. Complete 40-minute Interview. On today's 83rd Episode of The Thriller Zone, special debut author Eli Cranor stops by to chew the fat about his debut runaway hit, "Don't Know Tough." From one Southern boy to another, this dude gets it right, on so many levels. The feeling of the deep south, the characters who play in that world, and a heart-wrenching story about the not-so-small world of high school football in a small southern town. As author Ace Atkins says, "Eli knows the underbelly of Friday night lights in this stunning debut that bleeds authenticity and raw emotion." Eli has walked the walk, by both playing and coaching football, and even today, teaches high-schoolers what it means to live and learn and win in life. I think you'll appreciate the laidback demeanor of my guest, and the insights he brings as a debut author to the world of publishing. You'll also get an "inside peek" into his "special writing space," how he entertains his kids (and pets), and just how much he loves the craft of storytelling. Legendary Boston PI Spenser is back in ROBERT B. PARKER'S BYE BYE BABY, the 50th installment in the critically acclaimed saga started by the late Parker and the tenth to be written by New York Times-bestselling author Ace Atkins. Over the years, fans have looked to Spenser—widely considered to be “Parker's greatest creation” (Chicago Sun-Times)—as a symbol of honor and honesty in a sordid world. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this latest entry, which sends Spenser on the campaign trail with a progressive political ingenue, who is the target of a deadly conspiracy. G. P. Putnam's Sons is thrilled to publish this electrifying new adventure. Carolina Garcia-Ramirez is a rising star in national politics, taking on the establishment with her progressive agenda. Tough, outspoken, and driven, the young congresswoman has ignited a new conversation in Boston about race, poverty, health care, and the environment. Now facing her second campaign, she finds herself not only fighting a tight primary with an old guard challenger but also contending with numerous death threats coming from hundreds of suspects. When her chief of staff reaches out to Spenser for security and help finding the culprits of what he believes to be the most credible threats, Garcia-Ramirez is less than thrilled. Since her first grassroots run, she's used to the antipathy and intimidation women of color often face when seeking power. To her, it's all noise. But it turns out an FBI agent disagrees, warning Spenser that Garcia-Ramirez might be in real danger this time. It doesn't take long for Spenser to cross paths with an extremist group called The Minutemen, led by a wealthy Harvard grad named Bishop Graves. Although Graves is a social media sensation, pushing an agenda of white supremacy and toxic masculinity, he denies he's behind the attacks. As the primary nears and threats become a deadly plot, it's up to Spenser, Hawk, and a surprise trusted ally to ensure the congresswoman is safe. This is Spenser doing what he does best, living by a personal code and moral compass that can't ever be broken. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Ace Atkins is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-eight books, including ten books in his Quinn Colson series. Handpicked by the Robert B. Parker Estate nearly a decade ago to continue the Spenser series, he's written ten novels about the iconic private eye. He lives and works in Oxford, Mississippi. Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Police Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole-Everett Hitch Westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

The recording was digitized, remastered and re-edited in November 2021. The post The Probabilities Archive: Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), the early Spenser novels, 1981 appeared first on KPFA.

Today, we're chatting with award-winning crime novelist (and journalist) Ace Atkins, about 'The Heathens,' his latest entry in the Quinn Colson thriller series. Atkins worked as a crime reporter in the newsroom of The Tampa Tribune before he published his first novel, Crossroad Blues, in 1998. Along with Colson books, he has also continued Robert B. Parker's iconic Spenser character after Parker's death in 2010. https://aceatkins.com/
The latest Blu-ray and DVD releases from BARRY FORSHAW - LINE OF DUTY to Rupert Davies' MAIGRET. Also an interview with KIM NEWMAN about his novel due in November SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT, also horror, Hollywood and modelling villains on Elon Musk.SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT: Hollywood, the late 1930s. Raymond Chandler writes detective stories for pulp magazines, and drinks more than he should. Boris Karloff plays monsters in the movies, and is a genial, cricket-playing member of the British filmland colony on the shores of the Pacific. Both understand that these streets are dark with something more than night. Together, these English public school men in exile investigate mysterious matters in a town run by human and inhuman monsters. Under Home House, the mock gothic mock mansion of a film mogul, is a mad science dungeon just like in the movies – where an experiment has gone dangerously wrong, or even more dangerously right. Fiery death spills onto Sunset Boulevard. Fired by the DA, investigator John Devlin enlists Ray and Billy – Chandler and Pratt (Karloff) – to work the case, which threatens to expose Hollywood's most horrific secrets. And, oh yes, monsters aren't just for the movies.KIM NEWMAN is a well known and respected author and movie critic, known for his acclaimed Anno Dracula series. He writes regularly for Empire magazine and contributes to The Guardian, The Times, Time Out and others. He makes frequent appearances on radio and TV. He has won the Bram Stoker, International Horror Guild, British Fantasy and British Science Fiction Awards and been nominated for the Hugo, World Fantasy, and James Herbert Awards.BARRY FORSHAW is fiction critic for the Financial Times and provides extras for Blu-rays.
