Outside of documentaries and one unforgettable appearance on The Simpsons, The Ramones only made one film appearance - but what an appearance! Allan Arkush's chaotic, Joe Dante-scripted Rock 'n' Roll High School wasn't even meant to star da brudders, with Todd Rundgren and Cheap Trick considered for the film's musical guests. Then, one of the film's stars told producer Roger Corman there was a much hipper band whose asking price was much lower - and Corman, as ever, was sold on the second part. In the first of September's triple-headed shows, Graham is joined by Rob and Aidan to talk about that first wave of NY punk, as well as this film and The Ramones's unexpected connections with The Beatles, John Carpenter and Frank Sinatra. We also discuss why Joe Dante's films connect so well with da yoof, the experience of feeling old when you listen to Radio 1, bands who sell a lot of t-shirts and Rob's hatred of Blink-182. Hey! Ho! Roger Corman passed away on May 9, 2024, and we knew we wanted to do something special to commemorate his passing, so we are lucky to be joined by director/editors Allan Arkush (HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL), Allan Holzman (FORBIDDEN WORLD), and Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2) to discuss their careers and memories working with Roger. We hope you enjoy this tribute. Hail to the king!
This week, the Regular Joes pay tribute to the late great Roger Corman (1926-2024) very likely the most prolific B movie Producer/Director ever. Whether you saw a bootleg copy of the never released first Fantastic Four (1994) film, rocked out with the Ramones and Riff Randall in Rock ‘n' Roll High School (1979) or savored the 1960's Vincent Price Edgar Allan Poe adaptations that made the afternoon movie circuit in the 70s. It's almost impossible to have not been exposed to his work. Few creators have left such a large footprint … just as few creators have made as many films about gigantic human beings trampling things. The Joe's also take a look at the first episode of Dark Matter on Apple plus. Which is based on a book by Blake Crouch that Tod really likes. Even if you are thinking you are over the idea of a multiverse you should give this one a try. Wait … was that a SPOILER? There also What's in the Box and the usual Random Topics. Thanks for Listening!
This week Dave and Bryan take a look at Allan Arkush's follow up to Rock n Roll High School, the rock musical Looney Tunes mayhem of Get Crazy. It's a story of three filmmakers butting heads over the movie they were trying to make. Arkush intended for a nostalgia-drenched tribute to his teenage years at The Fillmore East in the style of Scorcese's The Last Waltz, the producer wanted a fast and stupid visual comedy in the style of Airplane! and the Executive Producer wanted a movie that was going to fail and fail badly so his tax shelter investors could turn a healthy profit. Somehow, they all got what they wanted in the end. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message
We discuss Allan Arkush's 1983 film Get Crazy, a truly will and crazy cinematic experience and a spiritual follow up to his earlier film Rock 'n' Roll High School.
Author Stephen B. Armstrong joins Staci to talk about his new book, "I Want You Around: The Ramones and the Making of Rock ‘n' Roll High School". He delves into his research process, interviewing the film's star PJ Soles, and discusses how things might have been different in cult film history if a certain other band had been brought on as the symbols of musical teenage rebellion.

Bucket List moment! The '79 Ramones teen comedy "Rock n Roll High School" is an old fave of ours. We have it on DVD, various streaming platforms and have it practically memorized. But we never got to see it in the theatre...until now. Our local arthouse theater aired it is as part of their Cult Movie Night. So with the experience still fresh in our minds we decided to deep dive into the film. 2024 is also "RnRHS" 45 anniversary. We get into the cast, the highlights (and lowlights), the social commentary and life imitating art (and vice versa). Screw you, Togar! In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to Wayne Kramer (RIP) and go over the Swift/NFL non issue. Musically, we crank some Marky Ramone and the Intruders, Conflict, The Ramonas, Ironflame, Digregorio and Enchanters. Horns Up!
Hosts STEPHEN SCARLATA (producer, Jodorowsky's Dune) and JOSH MILLER (writer, Sonic The Hedgehog, Violent Night) take an excellent adventure through the unmade career of actor/director ALEX WINTER (Bill & Ted trilogy, Freaked), including a Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick backwoods crime epic, a Howard Stern produced remake of Roger Corman's Rock n Roll High School, a 3-D remake of the horror classic The Gate, and more! HEATHERS is just one of many reference points at work in Emma Seligman's new BOTTOMS, but the two films taken together illustrate just how differently the “dark comedy” designation can be applied to high-school movies. So after searching for meaning in BOTTOMS, and coming to terms with the idea that meaninglessness may actually be its point, we compare how these two expressions of high-school hierarchies under attack function as dark comedy, how they put familiar tropes about cliques and clueless adults to different ends, and how one of them defuses a bomb the other is willing to set off. And in Your Next Picture Show, we add a third explosive high-school rebellion to the mix, with a recommendation for 1979's ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about HEATHERS, BOTTOMS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
