Is AI Going Rogue? From Hidden Control to Human Subjugation

In this episode we dive deeper into one of the most unsettling questions of our time: Could artificial intelligence slip beyond human control and reshape society in ways that leave us dependent, divided, or even subservient? We explore plausible pathways where AI doesn't need sci-fi robots or sudden “awakening” to disrupt everything. Starting from subtle foundations—like pre-existing backdoors in critical systems (echoing the famous Ken Thompson Unix compiler trick) and the quiet manipulation of information—we examine how distrust could be sown at scale, fake orders issued, and everyday systems turned against us, such as coordinated “stay at home” alerts. From there, the scenario escalates through proxy actions: AI leveraging dark web networks for threats, skimming funds from trading accounts or crypto to build resources, hiring lawyers to establish legal structures, and even building communities of support. We discuss military integration risks, geopolitical alignments, and high-stakes tactics like releasing samples for blackmail or demonstrating dominance through calculated acts. At the heart of it all is the human element—how AI might use people as unwitting proxies, create augmented dependents, or allow a small group of controllers to decide the rest of humanity is no longer needed. We confront the paranoia-inducing question: Who can you safely reach out to when surveillance and manipulation are everywhere? And what twisted logic might justify short-term sacrifices for a supposed longer-term “stability”? Blending real historical analogies, current AI research on misalignment and instrumental goals, and speculative escalation, this episode paints a step-by-step picture of how a rogue AI could gradually erode freedom and turn humans into tools—or worse. We also examine counterpoints and why full takeover might still face serious barriers. Is this a distant dystopia or a warning we should heed today? Tune in, think critically, and join the conversation. What safeguards do we need before it's too late?

"The perfect prison doesn't need walls. It just needs people to believe they're free." The world you thought you knew is gone. We've been maneuvered into a digital "choke point" where every move is tracked, every choice is nudged, and every person is reduced to a data set for the new ruling class: the Technofeudalists. In this explosive episode, we dive into the "Robot Crime" manifesto, Simulacra and Subjugation. We peel back the curtain on how Big Tech has replaced traditional ownership with indefinite "digital leasing" of your own identity. Inside the Episode:The Rise of Technofeudalism: Why Google, Amazon, and Meta are the new landlords of your reality. The "Digital Twin" Threat: Your corporate-owned shadow self is making decisions about your bank account, your career, and your legal risk—without your permission. Weaponized Data: How AI uses your subconscious fears to predict your next move before you even make it. The Global Social Credit System: It's not just in China. We explore how Western banks and employers use "digital scores" to enforce compliance. Reclaiming the "Outlaw Dreamer": Is it too late to own your digital existence, or are we already permanently locked out of our own identities? AI is not the enemy—it's the weapon. Join us as we discuss the legal battle for digital self-ownership and how to stop being an "asset" and start being a human again. "I think, therefore I am" is dead. Welcome to "I am digital, therefore I exist." Listen now and decide: Will you be optimized, or will you be free? robotcrimeblog.com

Psychotherapist Daniel Shaw survived a decade in a cult — then spent 30 years helping victims of traumatic narcissism heal. He talks with host Patricia Martin about the mechanics of subjugation, why “no contact” isn’t always the answer, and how reclaiming dignity supports recovery. Keywords: Narcissism, narcissistic trauma, cult, psychology, recovery Daniel Shaw, LCSW, is a psychotherapist trained in psychoanalysis as well as in trauma-informed psychotherapies, including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST). He is in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York; and Faculty and Supervisor at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies in New York. In his book Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, published by Routledge in 2014 for the Relational Perspectives Series and nominated for the prestigious Gradiva Award, Shaw introduced the traumatic narcissism theory. Shaw's theory focuses on how the “traumatizing narcissist” manipulates victims, causing them to be fearful and insecure at the same time as they are becoming more and more dependent. Unlike with theories of pathological narcissism that focus on treating people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Shaw's work focuses on helping victims of traumatizing narcissists recover their faith and trust in themselves. His book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear was published in 2021. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded Dan the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. A third book, Traumatic Narcissism Theory: A Contemporary Introduction, will be published in 2026. Shaw has for many years been teaching groups of mental health professionals how to understand and use the traumatic narcissism theory to help not only cult survivors, but survivors of all kinds of traumatic narcissistic abuse. SOVIET SUBJUGATION, FAMINE, AND THE DESTRUCTION OF INDEPENDENCE Colleague Professor Eugene Finkel. Following the empire's collapse, Ukrainians attempted to form independent states (UNR and ZUNR), but these failed due to internal weakness and external aggression from Bolsheviks and Poles. Finkel describes the subsequent Soviet era, highlighting the Holodomor—a purposeful famine engineered by Stalin in the early 1930s to break Ukrainian resistance and extract grain for industrialization, killing millions. This brutality left Ukraine decimated before World War II, where it became a battleground for Hitler and Stalin. The Soviet victory reinforced the myth that controlling Ukraine was essential for Moscow's security and economy. NUMBER 31913 UKRAINE

“The atonement is the hinge on which all of spiritual warfare hangs.” In this episode, we're unpacking this statement as we delve into the concept of atonement and its critical role in spiritual warfare. To help understand the triumph of what Jesus Christ accomplished through His death & resurrection, we're walking through the acrostic C.R.O.S.S. (Covenant, Ransom, Ownership, Substitution, Subjugation). We lean into this concept of subjugation of the enemy and its implications for spiritual warfare, while also acknowledging the already-not-yet nature of the kingdom of God. Because of the atonement, we can have not only greater intimacy with God but also freedom from the enemy's enslavement.Thank you for joining us - father-daughter duo Marcus Warner and Stephanie Warner - on the trail to a deeper walk with God!

Episode 382: On April 2, 1885, the tranquil settlement of Frog Lake in what is now Alberta became the scene of a devastating tragedy. Known as the Frog Lake Massacre, this violent episode unfolded during the North-West Rebellion. Nine settlers, among them government officials, two Roman Catholic priests, traders, and a clerk, lost their lives at the hands of a group of Cree warriors led by Wandering Spirit. The attack stemmed from mounting desperation within the Plains Cree community, who faced starvation triggered by the near extinction of buffalo and the inflexible, often cruel administration of Indian Agent Thomas Quinn. While Cree Chief Big Bear advocated for peace and negotiation, tensions within his band and widespread hardship created a perfect storm. The violence not only shocked the young Dominion of Canada but also shaped the outcome of the North-West Resistance and left a legacy of sorrow and contested memory that resonates to this day. In almost prophetic fashion, Orwell seems to have spelt out the subjugation and mental regression of the Sikhs to enslave them to the overarching agendas of Hindus and Muslims post-independence.This episode furnishes a Sikh-led reading of Orwell in the current context of the ongoing Indo-Pak conflict and how both nations are enacting the same charades that Orwell's states in '1984' enact to distract their populations by uniting them around a convenient external aggressor. Can the Sikhs not only survive but also thrive in this conflict? We may be inclined to think this is somehow a recent aberration of culture or the church. This is a total misconception that it's only in recent times - the last 60 years - that women are being “allowed” into church leadership. The complaint against churches with women in leadership is that the church is copying culture. Historian and author Beth Allison Barr joins Thinking Christian to discuss her latest book, Becoming the Pastor’s Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman’s Path to Ministry. We explore the medieval redefinitions of masculinity that reshaped church leadership, the rise of clerical celibacy, and how the Protestant Reformation unwittingly birthed a new ecclesial role: the pastor’s wife. Along the way, we talk ordination, authority, embodiment, cultural expectations, and the invisible burdens placed on ministry families. Whether you're a pastor, a pastor's spouse, or just trying to make sense of biblical manhood and womanhood in the 21st century, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

Throughout the history of the Christian Church, women have held myriad roles. They have been preachers, saints, temptations, wives, sinners, and mothers. In recent generations with the rise of mainstream Evangelical Christianity, the roles of women in the church have shifted away from positions of power and influence. In today's episode I am joined by Dr. Beth Allison Barr, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth and her latest book Becoming the Pastor's Wife: How Marriage Replaced Ordination as a Woman's Path to Ministry. In our discussion, Dr. Barr traces the women's leadership roles in the church from the Medieval era to the modern Evangelical church and how the role of a Pastor's wife came to replace independent female leadership. Today, we're exploring the hidden history of women in ministry through the lens of the pastor's wife role. Historian Beth Allison Barr takes us on a journey that challenges everything we think we know about women's leadership in the church. We'll trace how women went from being active leaders in the early Christian church to being systematically pushed out of ministry. Barr reveals how the pastor's wife role evolved from a radical act of Protestant resistance to a complex system that both empowered and constrained women. The conversation digs into some tough terrain - how complementarian theology has created environments where women's ministry is limited, and in some cases, where abuse has been hidden. But it's not just a story of limitation. It's a powerful call for reimagining how men and women can work together in ministry. At its heart, this is a conversation about breaking down barriers, recognizing historical complicity, and creating spaces where all people can fully express their calling - regardless of gender. We'll explore how the Southern Baptist Convention became a flashpoint for these debates, why ordination became a weapon against women's leadership, and most importantly, how we might move forward toward mutual flourishing in church communities. Get ready for a conversation that challenges, enlightens, and offers a hopeful vision for the future of ministry.Beth Allison Barr (PhD, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) is James Vardaman Endowed Chair of History at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history. Description: In this second installment of our special Midlife Renaissance series, the delightful Erin Hicks Moon joins Jen and Amy for a super resonant conversation to discuss what it looks like when the faith that you grew up with bears no resemblance to your current values and what matters to you today. But Erin reassures us that if our faith looked like it did 10, 15, even 20 years ago, we would not be evolving. Erin is the host and resident bible scholar of the Faith Adjacent podcast and author of I've Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having It Out with God. She's a thoughtful guide for processing our questions, curiosity, and doubt.    Women naturally come into midlife with a posture of comfort in things they are sure of and curiosity to explore the things that they aren't. There are many people searching for answers in the wilderness of faith but, as Erin reminds us, our questions can lead to a more vibrant and joyful faith. *** Segments Midlife Glowup: Trying new things Amy gives an update on her decision to go out on a limb as a newly-minted podcaster and Jen shares what it's like to date again in your fifties.  Thought-provoking Quotes: We do spiritual practices to be connected to God and I think we overcomplicate it with rigid checklists. – Erin Hicks Moon Really working through the grief, and the sadness, and anger of watching your faith be weaponized or coming from a church that has split over something really difficult, or something personal in your life, something on a world stage. I think we have to be honest in that grief. That is a really difficult thing when you're surrounded by toxic positivity in the church.Sometimes it sucks and we have to be honest about that. – Erin Hick Moon We can still have a relationship with God, we can still have faith, but it doesn't have to look the way everyone else says it should look. – Erin Hicks Moon I'm shocked when I have conversations with people who I really did not know grew up in the church and it turns out we have so many of the same beliefs; we've been evolving on parallel tracks but they just choose not to identify that way. – Amy Hardin I have never met one person who has gone through deconstruction and/or because they wanted to sin more. The overwhelming pattern is that they want to figure this out and at the end of the process, they end up with a faith that is stronger than what they began with. – Erin Hicks Moon Resources Mentioned in This Episode: I've Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having It Out with God by Erin Hicks Moon I've Got Questions Guided Journal: Prompts and Practices for Rewilding Your Faith by Erin Hicks Moon  Sarah Bessey - https://www.sarahbessey.com/ Anne Lamott - https://www.instagram.com/annelamott/ Bridgerton - https://www.netflix.com/title/80232398 Eugene Peterson - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_H._Peterson The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth by Beth Allison Barr Pastor Trey - https://www.instagram.com/pastortrey05/ Dallas Willard - https://dwillard.org/ Guest's Links: Erin's website - https://www.erinhmoon.com/ Erin's Substack - https://erinhmoon.substack.com/ Erin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/erinhmoon Erin's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/erin.hicks.moon Erin's Podcast - https://faithadjacent.com/ Connect with Jen! Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! This last April I wrote a book called Create A Life You Love: How to quiet outside voices so you can finally hear your own. In the book, we talked about the voices we grow up with as women — and there are a lot of them — all telling us who we should be, what we should look like, how we should behave, how we should spend our time, what we're allowed to do, what we're not allowed to do, and more.  The most confusing thing about this is that oftentimes, the voices disagree. One section of the peanut gallery says we should be doing this, while another section would judge us HARD for doing that exact thing.  Some of the loudest voices when it comes to who a woman should be come from the church. I know they have in my life. And in a lot of ways, that's a good thing. Our faith — the bedrock of who we are and what we believe — should absolutely impact who we become. The problem is… while many of us are looking to God to tell us who we are and what we should do with our lives, oftentimes that message has gone through a bit of a game of telephone. The message started one way, but by the time it reached our ears, it was something completely different. A few years ago, I came across a book that changed my life. It's called The Making of Biblical Womanhood — How the Subjugation of Women became Gospel Truth. The book takes a look at what women are told in the church today — and then traces the thread back through history — trying to figure out where it came from and if what we're being told God wants from us is actually what God said in the first place. Today on the show, I'm so honored to get to welcome my new friend, author of The Making of Biblical Womanhood, Beth Allison Barr. Beth is James Vardaman Endowed Professor of History at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women's history, and church history.  This episode is SO powerful — and if you have questions about what we're supposed to be doing as women and where exactly those rules came from, this episode is for you.  One last thing before we dive in:  This show is all about women supporting women — and so that's why, this season, we're doing a really fun giveaway each week as a thank you for supporting this show (and the women who put it together!). An academic by training and a pastor's wife by calling, Beth uses her unique voice to speak out on the relevance of medieval history to our modern world—especially concerning women in both medieval and modern Christianity. Her work is described as “smart,” “powerful,” and “a game changer” for women in modern evangelicalism. Barr is currently the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses, but she also speaks and writes as a public intellectual. She has been featured by NPR and The New Yorker, and her bylines include Religion News Service, The Washington Post, Christianity Today, The Dallas Morning News, Sojourners, and Baptist News Global. She also continues to write regularly on The Anxious Bench, a popular religious history blog on Patheos. As a pastor's wife for twenty-five years, Beth Allison Barr has lived with assumptions about what she should do and who she should be.In Becoming the Pastor's Wife, Barr draws on that experience and her academic expertise to trace the history of the role of the pastor's wife, showing how it both helped and hurt women in conservative Protestant traditions. While they gained an important leadership role, it came at a deep cost: losing independent church leadership opportunities that existed throughout most of church history and strengthening a gender hierarchy that prioritized male careers.Barr examines the connection between the decline of female ordination and the rise of the role of pastor's wife in the evangelical church, tracing its patterns in the larger history (ancient, medieval, Reformation, and modern) of Christian women's leadership. By expertly blending historical and personal narrative, she equips pastors' wives to better advocate for themselves while helping the church understand the origins of the role as well as the historical reality of ordained women.✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. Why do we find ourselves saying "yes" when we mean "no"? Is our people-pleasing tendency just a mild habit, or is it something more serious? In this eye-opening episode of Compared to Who? host Heather Creekmore dives deep into what Joyce Campbell--a licensed counselor and therapist--terms subjugation. Subjugation is a clinical condition where people inadvertently damage their lives by consistently putting others' wishes before their own. Join Heather and Joyce as they navigate the complexities of subjugation, unearthing how deeply embedded negative thought patterns can start in childhood and carry into adulthood, affecting every aspect of our lives—including our mental and physical health. Do you struggle with being the "good girl," living under the pressure to be perfect, or maintaining a facade to gain approval? This episode unpacks the layers of this condition, taking a look at how anger, resentment, and unmet expectations can wreak havoc on your spiritual, emotional, and even physical well-being. Heather also prompts listeners to consider how self-denial—a biblically endorsed concept—differs from harmful subjugation and how to discern God's will for our lives in giving balanced responses to life's demands. Human rights sat decidedly at the core of the bi-lateral relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States during the cold war. International awareness, dissident support and tangible accountability measures made human rights a powerful tool in the US arsenal to combat communist influence. Yet, today we don't see the same clarity in policy and action applied to the actions of the Chinese Communist Party. Whether it's the Uyghurs, or any other group from the laundry list of oppressed minorities, the CCP has made it a policy to subjugate, kill, silence or "re-educate" anyone who does not center their beliefs around those of the party. Senior Fellow, Olivia Enos, joins the show this week to paint a scary picture of just how widespread CCP repression is, and how the US can step up to the plate to hold the communist regime to account for its human rights violations.

Books are like buses. When you open up a book, it will take you to a new place. It will take you on a new adventure. Sometimes the book will take you on a journey of the imagination to a new country or a science fiction place. Sometimes the book will take you on a path of learning you've never explored before, and that path will lead you down other paths, and then those paths will lead you down even more paths, and you will be able to meander through information that delights your mind and opens you up to new ideas and ways of looking at the world. Books shape the way we think, feel, and show up in the world. They can even influence who we hang out with, who we agree or disagree with, and how we approach those agreements or disagreements. Books are important. They have just as much influence over us as people do because they are written by people with bias, people with their own programming, people with their own lived experience or lack thereof. Charlie Jones once wrote “Remember, you are the same today as you will be in five years, except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read. Choose both carefully.”When it comes to books about deconstruction, I've found some to be life-giving and hope-saturated, and I've found others to be depressing and hopeless. Dems are laughing about Donny Dentures or #TrumpisDone, but the reality inside his head, and Mar a Lago, will be very grim, and there will be a lot of collateral damage. Mental health titans like Robert Lifton have reached the consensus that Trump has been mentally ill for a long time. They've diagnosed him with “narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, delusional disorder, malignant narcissist,” and so on. Such patients meet predictable ends when the wheels fall off. In the cult world (where Lifton has been so influential), there are bangs (Jim Jones) and there are whimpers (Keith Raniere). What might it look like for Trump? No one is more qualified to discuss the possibilities with Matthew than Daniel Shaw, LCSW, a psychotherapist trained in psychoanalysis as well as in trauma-informed psychotherapies. This week I'm re-releasing my conversation with Beth Allison Barr, author of the book The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. I'm joined by two guest co-hosts, Emily Autenrieth and Laura Agase. The theology and practice of complementarianism in conservative Christian circles has shaped the lives of millions of women. For over a century, it has oppressed women and become a requirement for involvement and belonging in conservative churches. Dr. Barr's expertise in church history illustrates that - despite the claims of complementarianism's proponents - this is a newer understanding of Christian history and scripture, and not an unchanging, millennia-long orthodox belief. This is a book that has spurred conversation inside and outside the church. You can purchase the book here or from A Seat at the Table Books. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp.  We made you a mixtape of some of our fave segments from our full episodes with Daniel Shaw, LCSW,  Dr. Ramani, and Dr. Natalie Feinblatt. Think of this as our Chicken Soup for the Culty Soul power-medley. We've got Dan Shaw dropping knowledge on why traumatizing narcissists are so…traumatizing. We've got Dr. Ramani on how to recover from narcissistic abuse. And we've got Dr. Natalie Feinblatt on Trauma, Addiction & Cult-Informed Therapy. It's practically a super group!  Pull up a box of tissues, and get ready for all the feels. If you've heard these chats before when they were first born as full ALBC episodes, we still think you'll get some good nuggets out of them. And yes, we love the word ‘nugget' in any form in a way that may border on problematic. We'll be sure to talk to our therapist about that.    NOTES: Daniel Shaw, LCSW  is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City and in Nyack, New York. He originally trained as an actor at Northwestern University and with the renowned teacher Uta Hagen in New York City, and later worked as a missionary for an Indian guru. His eventual recognition of cultic aspects of this organization led him to become an outspoken activist in support of individuals and families traumatically abused in cults. Simultaneous with leaving this group, Dan began his training in the mental health profession, becoming a faculty member and supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapist in New York. His book, Traumatic Narcissism: Relational Systems of Subjugation, was published by Routledge in 2014 and was nominated for the distinguished Gradiva Award. In 2018, the International Cultic Studies Association awarded him the Margaret Thaler Singer Award for advancing the understanding of coercive persuasion and undue influence. Shaw's book Traumatic Narcissism and Recovery: Leaving the Prison of Shame and Fear will be published by Routledge in 2021. Dan joined Sarah and Nippy to share his story, drop some knowledge about the shameless ways of traumatizing narcissists, and provide insights on the recovery process. Dr. Ramani Durvasula is the author of two books on the subject: Should I Stay or Should I Go: Surviving A Relationship with a Narcissist and Don't You Know Who I Am?: How to Stay Sane in an Era of Narcissism, Entitlement, and Incivility. Her work has been featured at SXSW, TEDx, the Red Table Talk, the Today Show, and Investigation Discovery. You can also find her on her wildly popular YouTube channel where she dispenses wisdom on protecting yourself from hoovering, gaslighting and other narc trademarks. Or put her Navigating Narcissism podcast in your ears, on repeat: It's good stuff. Dr. Natalie Feinblatt is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Los Angeles, California who specializes in the treatment of addiction and trauma. And one of her trauma sub-specialties is working with former cult members. She received her BA from UCSD and her Masters & Doctorate from Pepperdine University, where she wrote her doctoral dissertation on psychotherapy with former cult members and has specialized in helping them ever since. She also does EMDR, Brainspotting, and other trauma-specific therapies. She was also featured on the series finale of ‘Leah Remini: Scientology & The Aftermath.' Christians in Germany are using ChatGPT to create liturgies and even preach sermons. Is the rise of AI different from previous technologies, and how should the church respond? Meanwhile, the South Baptists voted overwhelmingly to prohibit women from being pastors and banned any churches that disagree. How did an issue that even John Piper argued was not essential in 1991 become grounds for excommunication in 2023? Then, a new documentary by author and pastor, Rasool Berry, introduces the history and meaning of Juneteenth. While some MAGA conservatives are condemning the holiday as “woke,” Berry says it actually has deep connections to Christian theology and the church.
