Caren Kelleher - Gold Rush Vinyl Today we continue our series on “Pivots”, chatting with managers how have, at one point or another in their career, veered into or out of artist management, and how their experiences as an artist manager speaks into the work they’re doing now. When I was brainstorming on a new series topic, my guest today, Caren Kelleher, was towards the top of my list of folks I wanted to chat with, as she’s reinvented herself a few times in her career, and, as our conversion revels, her passion for supporting artists is a constant anchor throughout. Today, Caren owns and operates one of the nations premier vinyl pressing plants, Gold Rush Vinyl, based in Austin, TX. We’ll chat how she got there, along with the other various twists and turns along the way. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Caren.
Success in the music industry takes a longggg time. Even though from the front it seems like there's overnight success, in reality there's tons of work and time and energy that goes into the journey. Listen to the chat with Caren Kelleher, founder of Gold Rush Vinyl, talk about real world examples of the journey, embracing the road as the destination and how the dots connect in hindsight.
When Caren Kelleher was thirteen, she had her first startup idea: a Beatles-themed restaurant called The Octopus’ Garden. It was such a good idea that the band’s lawyers threatened to sue her over it, which only went to further her interest in the music business. Today, Caren is the founder and president of Gold Rush Vinyl, a new record manufacturing company that helps musicians take advantage of the renewed demand for vinyl. Once thought a dying format, vinyl has become a$1B industry once again, but one that has seen little innovation since the 1970s. Caren’s team recently launched a new state-of-the-art plant here in Austin to deliver high-quality records at a fraction of the time most plants can. Before starting Gold Rush, Caren was Head of Music Apps at Google, where she also launched Google’s own music service, Google Play. She started her career at Paste magazine and is also a former band manager, work that helped her see the vinyl opportunity. Caren holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BBA from Emory University. The Beatles are still her favorite band of all time.
Today on Small Business War Stories we are joined by Caren Kelleher, owner of Gold Rush Vinyl in Austin, Texas.
This week, we welcome Caren Kelleher, the owner of Austin’s Gold Rush Vinyl, a manufacturer that’s modernizing the making of record albums. Kelleher, who used to work at Google while managing bands, has just launched Austin’s only large-scale vinyl album production facility, but in the episode, she explains why this seemingly retro technology is so appealing to consumers right now. ALSO: David and Chelle Neff, the authors of "Weird Homes: The People and Places That Keep Austin Strangely Wonderful" and the organizers of the upcoming Weird Homes Tour joined Tolly and Omar to talk about what makes a home weird in the first place and why these homeowners are the keepers of a big part of Austin's cultural identity. Their self-paced driving tour returns on April 21. Pickle-loving baseball fans will have a hard time resisting one of the new dishes at the Texas Rangers stadium this year: Dilly Dogs, a hot dog stuffed inside a pickle and fried like a corn dog.
