The small Waikato township of Waitoa is losing its long-term access to free water. The local Fonterra factory is ending its more than 40-year old arrangement to supply locals water - originally to serve homes affected by factory dust. Matamata-Piako District Council is consulting the public on an 8.2-million proposed solution. Mayor Ash Tanner says Fonterra likely wants to avoid responsibility for anyone getting sick. "The problem I think we have in this country is - there's an incident, and then we have a bit of a knee-jerk reaction and then we set up a regulatory body to overlook it and then we go over the top and we make it harder to supply it." A Rosie On The House ReplayThis episode explores practical, low-cost strategies for reusing household gray water to irrigate landscapes. Brad Lancaster shares decades of experience designing regenerative water systems in dryland environments, emphasizing simple gravity-fed solutions over complex infrastructure. The conversation highlights how homeowners can dramatically reduce water use by “stacking functions” and capturing water already on-site. By pairing gray water with rainwater harvesting, households can meet most or all of their irrigation needs. Brad Lancaster runs a successful permaculture consulting design and education business in Tucson, Arizona. He's focused on integrated and sustainable approaches to landscape design, planning and living. Growing up in a dryland environment, water harvesting has long been one of his specialties and a true passion. He's the author of the Permaculture Bible for Water Harvesting, Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond, Volumes One and Two. And he has just released new color versions, revised and expanded of both of them.Key TopicsGray water (definition and household sources)Difference between gray water and black waterBrad Lancaster (water harvesting expert)Rainwater harvesting systemsGravity-fed irrigation designSoil as a living filtration systemMulch basins and infiltration strategiesLaundry-to-landscape systemsOutdoor shower gray water reuseWater conservation in dryland climatesArizona gray water regulations (13 guidelines)Soap and detergent impacts (salt vs liquid)Planting water before plants (design philosophy)Evapotranspiration and passive coolingKey Questions AnsweredWhat is gray water and how much of household water does it represent?Gray water is lightly used water from showers, sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines. It represents a significant portion of household water use—nearly equal to outdoor irrigation demand—making it a major opportunity for reuse. Is gray water safe to use in the landscape?Yes, when basic guidelines are followed. Avoid toxins, prevent pooling, and distribute water across multiple areas. Soil biology naturally filters the water, making it safe for fruit trees and many landscape plants. How can homeowners start using gray water cheaply and easily?Simple systems like redirecting a washing machine hose or using an outdoor shower can send water directly to plants using gravity. No pumps, tanks, or complex filtration systems are needed. What soaps and products should be used with gray water systems?Liquid soaps are preferred over powdered detergents because they contain fewer salt-based fillers. Avoid chlorine bleach and opt for hydrogen peroxide alternatives to protect soil health. Why shouldn't gray water be stored in tanks?Stored gray water quickly turns septic due to organic matter, creating odor and health issues. It's best used immediately by directing it into soil systems. How does combining gray water and rainwater maximize impact?Together, they can meet nearly all irrigation needs for a landscape, especially with low-water-use plants. This reduces reliance on municipal water and increases resilience. What does “plant the water first” mean?Design the landscape to capture and infiltrate water using basins and contours before planting. This ensures plants receive consistent moisture naturally.Where should plants be placed in a water-harvesting landscape?Higher water-use plants should be placed near water sources like roofs or gray water outlets. Trees should be positioned for shade and cooling benefits, especially on east and west sides of buildings.Episode HighlightsGray water is “perennial water”—it flows daily as long as you live in your homeYou've already paid for this water—reuse it instead of sending it to the sewerA simple laundry system can irrigate multiple trees by rotating a drain hoseSoil acts as a living sponge and filter, outperforming mechanical systemsOutdoor showers can double as irrigation systems and cooling zones for animalsAvoid overcomplication—gravity systems are cheaper, more reliable, and effectiveCapturing both rainwater and gray water can eliminate most irrigation needsWater harvesting landscapes create cooler microclimates and support biodiversityCalls to Action & ResourcesBrad Lancaster Resources — https://www.harvestingrainwater.comYouTube Channel — Search “Brad Lancaster water harvesting”Books — Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond (Volumes 1 & 2)Visit www.UrbanFarm.org/980 for the show notes and links on this episode!Need a little bit of advice or just a feedback on your design for your yard or garden? The Urban Farm Team is offering consults over the phone or zoom. A “bathtub ring” lines the canyon walls of Lake Mead, marking the dramatic drop in water levels as the Colorado River system faces prolonged drought and overuse. Image by Tara W. / Pexels. As the Colorado River Basin faces historic drought, shrinking reservoirs, and intensifying climate pressures, new research reveals a striking reality: Some of the largest water users in the West pay little to nothing for their supply. In this episode of Terra Verde, host and producer Hannah Wilton speaks with Isabel Friedman, a senior advocacy associate with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and Noah Garrison, the Environmental Science Practicum Director at of University of California, Los Angeles's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability about their report, Free Water While It Lasts: An Analysis of Wholesale Water Pricing in the Lower Colorado River Basin States. Drawing on decades of policy and pricing data, Friedman and Garrison unpack how longstanding decisions about water allocation and cost have shaped today's crisis. They explore stark disparities between agricultural and urban water pricing, why artificially low costs can discourage conservation, and how these dynamics have contributed to the Colorado River's declining storage levels. They also explore emerging proposals — including a potential surcharge on federally supplied water — and the political deadlock states face as they struggle to negotiate the river's future. As California and the broader region confront deepening water scarcity, this episode asks: What would it take to align water pricing with the realities of a changing climate? Poducer | The Podcast for Producers Jerry sits down with Ben Moskow (The Real Ones) to talk about independent media, podcasting, and the evolving creator economy. The conversation covers Ben's background in media, how The Real Ones started, the rise of Substack and newsletters, and what it takes to build sustainable independent platforms in an increasingly crowded media landscape. Ben Moskow Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ben.m/ Real Ones https://realonesshow.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@UC0pWzldmto6M2HTOYv8S6eg https://www.tiktok.com/@realonesshow Ben shares how The Real Ones grew out of a desire to document artists early in their careers and create space for deeper conversations outside the traditional press cycle. Jerry and Ben discuss the role independent media can play in music scenes, especially when smaller platforms highlight emerging artists and communities that larger outlets often overlook. The conversation also dives into the evolution of podcasting itself. What started as a grassroots medium where anyone could start a show has become a far more competitive space, particularly as celebrities and major public figures have entered the format. Jerry and Ben explore how that shift has changed the way audiences discover and engage with shows. They also discuss the broader creator ecosystem, including platforms like Substack and the growing interest in building direct relationships with audiences through newsletters and independent media channels. Toward the end, the conversation turns to the realities of sustaining independent projects today, from audience attention to the economics of building a platform that can last. You can get free water at Disney World at restaurants but it has a funny taste. That water come straight from the kitchen sink, no filter or anything. Water from the sink is disgusting. Water is not supposed to have a taste. You would think as much money as Disney World makes that everywhere in Disney World parks would have filtered water. I'm paying a fortune to get in the park and I have to drink tasty water. WATER IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE A TASTE!!!!

With 45 percent of U.S. water sources containing toxic contaminants, according to the EPA, access to clean drinking water is becoming increasingly uncertain. Worse still, according to a UN study, over 40% of the world's water bodies are considered severely polluted, meaning a significant portion of Earth's water is contaminated; this translates to around 1 in 3 people not having access to safe drinking water. Traditional water treatment methods rely on filtering or distilling existing sources like lakes, rivers, or oceans. But a new approach is gaining traction—one that pulls water directly from the air.Alexander Von Welczeck, Founder and CEO of SkyH2O, explains how Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) is reshaping water access. By capturing humidity and converting it into purified water, AWG provides a decentralized supply of water that reduces dependence on our failing infrastructure. As concerns grow over PFAS (forever chemicals) and other pollutants in municipal systems, AWG offers a safer alternative with wide-ranging applications. As water scarcity grows, AWG is emerging as a scalable solution for industries, communities, and facilities that need reliable access to clean water in an increasingly water stressed world. Tune-in to hear how it really works and just how close we are to pulling water right out of the air!If you want to connect with today's guest, you'll find links to his contact info in the show notes on the blog at https://mysuncast.com/suncast-episodes/.Our Platinum Presenting Sponsor for SunCast is CPS America!SunCast is proudly supported by Trina Solar. You can learn more about all the sponsors who help make this show free for you at www.mysuncast.com/sponsors.Remember, you can always find resources, learn more about today's guest and explore recommendations, book links, and more than 730 other founder stories and startup advice at www.mysuncast.com.Subscribe to Valence, our weekly LinkedIn Newsletter, and learn the elements of compelling storytelling: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/valence-content-that-connects-7145928995363049472/You can connect with me, Nico Johnson, on:Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/nicomeoLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickalusMentioned in this episode:CPS July 2024 V2

This is probably the most requested show we've had over the past year or so. I knew whatever we did to roast this show it wouldn't be enough for the show's detractors. But luckily, Doug from Who's Right and Bryan Johnson from Tell Em Steve Dave were up for the challenge of figuring out why there are so many Aaron Imholte haters. This is a WATP takeover as I'm on vacation this week. After an extensive review of Steel Toe, Bryan has some thoughts on my interview with Stuttering John and Doug brings some clips from Patty Pukewater's latest Free Water episode. https://tellemstevedave.com/ https://whosrightpodcast.com/ Tickets to the Magic Bag on 9/15 – http://watplive.com/ Support us, get bonus episodes, Vic and Hannah pics, and watch live every Saturday and most Wednesdays: http://bit.ly/watp-patreon https://watp.supercast.tech/ Learn more about your ad choices. For years now we've been following Patrick Michael on his podcasting adventures. Lately we haven't been giving him the love and attention he so desperately needs, so he's been acting up and talking about us and Dick Masterson a lot. Here is our response, Patty. I hope it results in dozens of downloads of your show. After we get caught up on the world of Patty Pukewater aka Patty Brokenskull aka Patty C Cups, we discuss my recent appearance on Misery Loves Company. Then Ed the Editor has another parody to ride the momentum of Cucktales. Howard Stern had a bunch of celebrity guests in Miami and talks to all of them about their childhood, depression, and therapy. All that, another round of To Catch An Alien, and much more.
