In early 1986, Austin, Texas was grappling with rising crime, particularly around the condemned Booker T. Washington housing project on the east side, which had become a haven for drugs and violence due to bureaucratic neglect. Amid this, Ruth Case—a beloved nurse, student, wife, and mother of two—vanished after attending a class at Austin Community College's Ridgeview campus nearby. Her disappearance shocked the community, especially after her car was found untouched and no immediate leads emerged. Weeks later, her purse surfaced in a nearby wooded area, and soon after, her raped and murdered body was discovered in a vacant, unlocked unit within the housing project—one supposedly searched by police earlier. The failure of that search drew criticism and led to procedural reforms, while Ruth's tragic death underscored the urgent need to address the dangerous conditions in the area. Although several suspects were considered, no one was ever charged, and the case eventually went cold. Ted Brown was born in 1960 in Steubenville, Ohio, the grandson of German, Greek and Jewish immigrants. Ted and his parents later moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and Ted worked in the family business, an Ethan Allen furniture store, through high school. Ted attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut for one year, then moved to Los Angeles. He later graduated from UCLA in 1984, earning a B. A. in political science with a concentration in Constitutional Law. Since then he has worked in the insurance industry and is currently self-employed as an independent insurance adjuster, specializing in auto, property, and general liability cases. Ted and his wife Laura have been married since 1984. They lived in Southern California for many years before moving to Austin and buying a home in Wells Branch. Laura is a native of Wichita Falls, Texas and teaches at Austin Community College. They have one adult daughter named Katie, who is a fundraiser for a major university hospital. Ted joined the Libertarian Party in 1979 and has been active his entire adult life. He has served as Chairman of the Libertarian Party of California and as a member of the Libertarian National Committee. Prior to his role with Rouxbe, Dan worked with Whole Kids Foundation training teachers and food service at schools across the country on nutrition and culinary best practices. He also worked as a Healthy Eating Educator at Whole Foods Market's flagship store in Austin, TX, was a personal chef for some of Austin's elite business people, taught classes in culinary techniques at Austin Community College, The Natural Epicurean, and Le Cordon Bleu. Dan also regularly volunteers cooking or speaking about nutrition for the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Marathon Kids, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas. Tune in to hear her incredible story of resilience and the life-saving power of organ donation.A Little More About Today's GuestAimee Mackovic was born with a congenital defect (a hole in the middle of her heart) and underwent her first open heart surgery at 15 months for a pulmonary banding, which was a temporary fix. That "fix" lasted until she was 22 years old. At 22, Aimee underwent another open-heart surgery to potentially now repair the hole. Due to the nature of the defect, a full repair was not possible, so they did a newly touted Fontan procedure, which was meant to be a bridge surgery to an eventual heart transplant. Well, another 22 years later with another hospital stay, she is admitted to Dell's Children Hospital in Austin, TX with heart and liver failure. The very complex and urgent nature of her case caused her to be taken on by Stanford Hospital in California, where she received her heart and liver on December 13th, 2019. She received a kidney transplant in June of 2022. In June of 2023, she moved back to Austin, TX, where she resumed her teaching life at Austin Community College and her social life with her friends. Dr. Linnea Fletcher is a true pioneer at bridging biotech and education. On the show she explains how high school biotech incubators got started and how others can get involved. She also shares more about the upcoming innovATEBIO conference. Dr. Fletcher she simultaneously joined the first National Science Foundation-funded National Biotechnology Education Center, Bio-Link, and received her first NSF-funded Advanced Technological Education grant to start Biotechnology high school programs in Texas. In 2015, she received an Emerging Technology Fund grant to build a Bioscience Incubator at ACC and several Wagner Peyser grants to equip it. Today, the incubator is full of start-up companies and students interning or working for these companies. The center was funded 4 years ago at 7.5M for 5 years to coordinate over 134 two-year biotechnology programs and their educationalpartners for the purpose of creating a biotechnology workforce focusing on technician education. Every senior scientist needs 5 to 7 technicians for R&D, biomanufacturing and quality assurance and regulatory matters. (National Science Board report 2019). She worked as an NSF Program Officer from2008 to 2010 and was involved setting up the first Vision and Change Meeting. Once back on the job as Biotechnology Department Chair in 2015, she received an Emerging Technology Fund Grant to build a Bioscience Incubator at ACC and several additional grants to equip it. Today the incubator is full of startup companies and students interning or working for these companies. She was PI of the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center, and is now the PI of InnovATEBIO, the NSF funded National Biotechnology Center. Combining economic development with educational opportunities is her passion. She is also PI and Co-PI on several other grants associated with the work of the center. Intro Dr. Amit Dongol founder of Neurostem has a passion to give back as well as be part of an intellectual, healthy, and growing community. After earning a PhD in physics like all great intellects he realized there must be more all the while challenged to find a school that would meet his gifted son's educational needs at the elementary school age. Through trial and error they enrolled him in public, private, chartered, and Montessori however none of them seem to be the right fit! He then decided to quit his job and took the opportunity and challenge to guide/teach him on his own. In efforts to better help his son and prepare, he started teaching physics at Austin Community College and Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX as an Adjunct Professor. Quite serendipitously Amit realized there is a massive gap in our primary and secondary education system and the students struggling at college and University. Journalists and news outlets turned to Distinguished Professor, Microbiologist, and Virologist Dr. Rodney E. Rohde. During our interview, we talk about how faculty can leverage their expertise for the benefit of their career and the university. BIO Rodney E. Rohde, PhD is a Texas State University System Regents' Professor, University Distinguished Professor, and Chair of the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) Program in the College of Health Professions at Texas State University. He also serves as Associate Director for the Translational Health Research Center. Dr. Rohde is a Global Fellow, Fellow of the Association of Clinical Scientists, and Honorary Professor of International studies. He is an ASCP board-certified Specialist in Virology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. He spent a decade as a public health microbiologist and molecular epidemiologist with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Bureau of Laboratories and Zoonosis Control Division prior to his academic career, including two terms as a CDC Visiting Scientist. His research interests include Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs), antimicrobial resistance, and clinical/public health microbiology especially zoonotic diseases (Rabies, Hantavirus, and others). He also continues to enjoy his role as an Associate Adjunct Professor of Biology with Austin Community College (28 years) where he teaches fundamentals of biology and microbiology courses.Dr. Rohde has published more than 80 research articles and abstracts, two books, and is a highly sought keynote presenter with over 100 international, national, and state conference presentations. There's a ton of challenges that go into writing a book. It involves a lot of research and travel, plus juggling that with your personal life and everything that's going on. Such is the determination it takes to be able to get a book done, especially as a single mom. In today's episode, Alison Macor shares her journey through writing and motherhood. Imagine a mom whose parents were both ill at that time so she had to fly back and forth from Austin, where she lives, to her parents in New Jersey to help with the care, while flying to Los Angeles for her book. Alison Macor received a Public Scholars grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for her forthcoming book “Making The Best Years of Our Lives: The Hollywood Classic That Inspired a Nation” (University of Texas Press, 2022), about the 1946 blockbuster that influenced the way we talk about PTSD. She is also the author of “Rewrite Man: The Life and Career of Screenwriter Warren Skaaren” (UT Press, 2017) and “Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids: Thirty Years of Filmmaking in Austin, Texas,” which won the 2012 Peter C. Rollins Book of the Year Award. She holds a Ph.D. in film history and taught for more than 20 years at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University, Austin Community College, and the Austin Museum of Art. A former film critic, Alison currently works as a freelance writer and ghostwriter and lives in Austin with her husband and son. Francis Preve is a sound designer, journalist, and educator. He teaches synthesis and sound design at Austin Community College. Russell is the founder and creative director of Studio Dzo, a multi-disciplinary design-build studio that works with developers, architects, interior designers, and other business owners to elevate their work and help bring it to life. On top of that, he's also an adjunct professor covering portfolio development at Austin Community College, and is a core team member of African American Graphic Designers, the largest collective of African-American and Black visual communicators.
