There will NOT be a live show on February 13th, as I will be watching TV with a small group of people I haven't seen in years. Sony has acquired Destiny 2 developer Bungie for $3.6 Billion. Most of that money went to securing the talent by offering them more money if they stay with the company for several years instead of immediately leaving. The New York Times has purchased viral hit Wordle for over $1 million, and people think it will stay ad-free and free to play forever. (It won't.) Google has deprioritized the Stadia service in favor of the "Google Stream" technology, choosing to spend more resources working with companies like Peleton rather than consumers. Then we take a call trying to convince Bobby to get Pokemon Legends: Arceus, as well as talking about why we're seeing so much consolidation in the gaming industry recently.
This week, we begin the podcast by debuting our latest giveaway: 6 Lenovo Smart Clocks with the wireless charging dock. You can check out more details on that device here, but don't forget to get entered for your chance to win down further in this post. This time, the giveaway will run until the end of the month and we'll draw 6 lucky winners on February 28th at 10am. Oh, and this is our first podcast with a video component available, too! We'll be tweaking and honing this element as we go, but the core pieces are now in place for you to watch/listen to the podcast from this point forward. We really hope you enjoy it! Now, let's talk about the actual podcast content a bit, shall we? The first large segment of the show is spent talking about Chrome and Chrome OS 98 and all the new, small, useful features that have come along with them. We actually have a video that just went live highlighting a few of these things, and with the new 4-week update schedule in place, it seems that these simple feature additions could be the way of things for the foreseeable future. Additionally, we discuss the Samsung Unpacked event and some of the noteworthy things that came from it. Of particular interest was the fact that Samsung is including 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security updates, surpassing Google's own Pixel phones by a full 2 years in that regard. Samsung also made it clear that their full camera functionality for the Galaxy S22 will be available in popular apps like Instagram, Snapchat and more. In some ways, Samsung is simply besting Google at making Android an OS for the masses. NOTABLE LINKS ENTER THE GIVEAWAY! The first Nintendo Direct of 2022 is finally here, and it was a whopper! We're going over every single announcement, including Xenoblade Chronicles 3, the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Strikers: Battle League, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Nintendo Switch Sports, and so much more (as well as the unfortunately named "Mouthful Mode" from Kirby and the Forgotten Land). We'll also be discussing Intellivision Amico's nearly $8.5 million debt load, how the US government wants to put Nintendo hacker Gary Bowser behind bars for five years "to provide just punishment," and Google Stadia's downgrade to Google Stream. Finally, class is in session with Professor Ryebread in our Gaming History 101 segment. In this episode, we're looking at the Super Famicom's largest (and coolest) peripheral, the Satellaview. This episode has been proudly sponsored by the Retro Game Club Podcast!
