Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on 2010's Deadly Premonition. We dig into the game further, particularly talking about how its open world works for us as opposed to the repetitive tasks of more modern open world games, among other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up past town meeting (Tim) and a little less (Brett) Issues covered: scheduling, porting games successfully and not, engine ports and working with engines, removing an easy mode, janky controls and performance, enemy entrances and support, enemies as stories, shadow origins, enemy animation, integrating the pickups to the combat, the baby, the doorknob and the puzzle clue, being lenient with the mechanics, York the jerk, an object playing double duty, phones as save points, door interacts and knowing the player will see something, playing on player expectation, the heart rate monitor, creating dread and drama, having to retread the level while being chased, meeting the killer, disempowerment, reach exceeding grasp, hand-crafted moments, the various technical elements, the expense of polishing all these mechanics, the appreciation of surprise vs the ur-game, seeing the production methodology in the games, the anti-production of the unknown, the diminishing effect of systematizing cultural specifics, fitting the narrative to the open world, interviewing suspects and moving forward the narrative, getting the Twin Peaks experience, knowing one can do things in the living town, the task system and knowing what chapters you can visit people in, getting to locations in open world games and time having stood still for the player, homage vs theft, picking our favorite trading cards, feeling like you're solving a crime, a crime that can play out multiple ways.  Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Portal 2, Defeating Games for Charity, Nintendo Switch, Unreal, Unity, Godot, Halo (series), Republic Commando, Silent Hill (series), Alan Wake, Ico, Resident Evil (series), Hideo Kojima, Dark Souls, Metal Gear (series), Alien: Isolation, Twin Peaks, Final Fantasy IX, The Last Express, Beyond Good & Evil, Rockstar, Witness, Deadline, Infocom, Red Dead Redemption (series), Heavy Rain, Agatha Christie, Mousetrap, Batman, X-Files, Spelunky, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Next time: Bonus Portal 2 LIVE STREAM Defeating Games for Charity  Twitch: timlongojr and twinsunscorp YouTube Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

I recently played the Pixel Remaster version for the first time, so I wanted to give Cecil and friends another round of RTG.I don't disagree with anyone that says Final Fantasy VI is the superior game, but IV isn't without its charm. I love the characters, betrayals, and combat system, and personally I like the linear party management of this one better to future entries where you can mix and match as you please. It's really wild to see how far JRPGs have come since Golbez's started robbing jewelry stores, and I think FF IV deserves its flowers for helping the series evolve from its basic NES counterparts.Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week and we both geeked out pretty hard over this game. A couple dungeons (Dark Elf) and characters (Spoony Bard) got under our skin, but at the end of the day I think we agree that this is a must-play for fans of the genre, and a great place for someone new to Final Fantasy to get their feet wet. And before we argue with Tellah, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what the next big trend in gaming is going to be? What Mario moment blew my mind the most as a kid? And where doI stand on silent protagonists in games?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new game in our series on independent games with 2004's Cave Story. We briefly set the game in its time, talk a little about its developer, and then talk about the game proper. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: A couple of hours Issues covered: freeware vs democratized indie dev and publishing, Japanese independent development, an indie darling, likely antecedents, 2004 in review, the end of a cycle, standing out in a stacked year, sticking it out, breaking through onto Nintendo platforms, early independent success on the Switch platform, influences and what's in the mix, weapon leveling, more story than expected, characters and dialog, more adventure, having a mess of villagers, setting up mysteries, merging lots of elements into their story and interactions, a spike at the end, adding puzzle-y elements, keys and keys that are not keys, threads of characters and relationships, something that is more than a MetroidVania, a skill-based game, "you're a really good person," forgetting a console came out, having the opportunity to play off-the-beaten path games, not needing a map, the dangers of categorization, how the platforming feels, fear of skill-based need, becoming one with the controller, an emotional response, empathetic response, catharsis, building the dam and breaking it, graceful building, manipulation in art, can a movie version work vs the interactivity, shock in literary fiction. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Nintendo Switch, Fez, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, Cara Ellison, Downwell, Wii, Crystal Dynamics, Super Meatboy, Metroid, Nifflas, Knytt, n/n+/n++, Pixeljunk (series), Q-Games, Dylan Cuthbert, World of Warcraft, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, The Sims 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Doom 3, Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal, Silent Hill 4: The Room, GTA: San Andreas, Far Cry, Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Star Wars: Battlefront, Pikmin 2, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Jak 3, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, Katamari Damacy, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Republic Commando, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, WiiWare/DSi, PS Vita, Net Yaroze, Nicalis, Castlevania, MegaMan, CapCom, Bionic Commando, Sega, Sonic (series), Square Enix, Zelda (series), Final Fantasy IX, Dark Souls (series), The Seven Samurai, Firewatch, Animal Well, Spelunky (series), Hollow Knight, Gone Home, Ashton Herrmann, Last of Us, Shadow of the Colossus, Shakespeare, Outer Wilds, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.  Next time: Finish Cave Story Twitch Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com
