Ep. 206 - Kimberly sits down with multi-time tech entrepreneur André Swanston on the historic launch day of his groundbreaking cloud gaming platform, PHYND. Fresh off a massive nine-figure exit from his previous venture, True Optik, André is on a mission to completely democratize how we play video games on the big screen. In partnership with Samsung, PHYND is removing the heavy financial barrier of gaming by eliminating the need for expensive consoles and dedicated controllers—making high-quality gaming completely free and accessible right through your smart TV. André pulls back the curtain on the realities of entrepreneurship, including the gritty truths of raising capital as a minority founder, how being "pissed off" can be a powerful tool for motivation, and why failure is only finite if you refuse to quit. We also dive into his venture into professional sports as the founder of Connecticut United FC, and how he models a relentless work ethic for his children. Sometimes an episode of AwesomeCast really shows the full range of what makes the show fun. Episode 775 goes from the emotional high of a successful Artemis 2 splashdown all the way to the absurd joy of seeing someone force macOS onto an original Nintendo Wii. Sorg and Podnar open with one of the week's best feel-good tech stories: Artemis 2 made it home successfully, and Dave shares the unexpectedly charming story of the mission mascot RISE. In a week that needed some good news, the conversation lands on something larger than space hardware alone. This was about optimism, engineering, and a rare moment of collective excitement. Then the show pivots back to Earth with the kind of story that feels custom-made for AwesomeCast: yes, someone got early Mac OS X running on a Nintendo Wii. It is not practical. It is not necessary. It is absolutely wonderful. That same spirit carries into Sorg's hands-on experiment with Mythic, a tool aimed at helping M-series Mac users access Windows games through the Epic ecosystem. The conversation explores how much better Apple Silicon has become for compatibility, even if some rough edges still show up in real-world testing. A big chunk of the episode also digs into Amazon Luna's latest changes. Sorg reacts to the platform ending game purchases and outside store access, and the discussion quickly becomes about more than Luna itself. It becomes a conversation about trust in digital platforms, cloud gaming ownership, and what happens when convenience gets taken away after users have already bought in. It is one of the sharpest segments in the episode because it blends personal use with a bigger industry trend. There is also a lighter side this week. Dave shares The Weather Channel's retro weather experience, which sends both hosts into a funny and surprisingly thoughtful conversation about the old cable era, nostalgic interfaces, and how channels drift from their original purpose. On the more practical side, they also touch on Overcast's new transcript support and Waymo's plan to help cities identify potholes using vehicle data. That latter topic turns into a very Pittsburgh-flavored discussion about 311 systems, local government tech, and whether cities are really taking advantage of the tools they have. Finally, Dave closes with his Arab American History Month spotlight on Tony Fadell, best known for his work on the iPod and Nest. It is a fitting end to an episode that is really about the many layers of tech: breakthrough engineering, strange experimentation, product design, infrastructure, nostalgia, and how all of it shapes everyday life. Sorg, Katie, and Dave Podnar hit the week's tech and geek headlines: Nintendo's Virtual Boy revival on Switch, Apple's latest product wave (including iPhone 17e and iPad Air updates), and a troubling report about Meta AI smart glasses and human review. Plus Dunkin's giant drink bucket, MuppetVision in VR, Adobe's AI video-editing experiments, Pokémon nostalgia gadgets, Xbox 1440p cloud streaming, a Marvel retro collection, and a Women's History Month spotlight on Grace Hopper.

In this episode of Linux Out Loud, Matt takes squad leader role while Wendy and Nate rejoin the party for a high‑FPS catch‑up on life, Linux, and loud gaming sessions. They swap updates on Wendy's robotics teams heading deeper into competition season, Nate's battle with basement water and building a proper home lab spawn point, and Matt's quest to keep a local‑only media server running on modest hardware. From organizing racks and labeling gear to wrestling with Starlink latency and debating cloud gaming versus real ownership, the crew dives into how their real‑world chaos shapes the way they run Linux, host services, and play games. If you like robots, home labs, and arguing about whether you really own your digital library, this one's for you. There are a ton of games out, but we're also thinking about attempting the backlog? The portal now has cloud gaming and it could be a game changer in the handheld space, also Switch 2 sales are blowing up!
In today's Daily Fix:Sony's PlayStatio Portal is officially getting game streaming over the cloud today. The feature was previously in beta, but is now available to all users, provided you have the right PlayStation Plus membership. Game streaming via the cloud does not require the PS Portal to be connected to a PS5 console. In related news, code and graphics for a 'cross-buy' option has been found on the PlayStation Store. Sony hasn't announced anything yet, so many are speculating that this could mean dual PS5/PC purchases. And finally, the highly-anticipated Terminator 2D: NO FATE has been delayed yet again, but this time only about two weeks. The game is now slated for December 12, 2025.
In Episode 180, we dive into the upcoming changes for the PS4 as it reportedly starts losing some services in 2026.
