The festive season is well and truly upon us, which can only mean one thing! …Actually that's not true, it means loads of things to all sorts of different people. But to an Indieventure listener, it means our increasingly established tradition of putting together a two-part end-of-year round-up! Tune back in for our Game of the Year list discussion on December 22nd, but first, it's time for a more free-form look at the year that was. If you've listened to one of these before you'll know that this episode can end up being quite… cathartic for your trio of hosts, who've once again witnessed a year in the games industry that can generously be characterised as full of highs and lows. But aside from… all that, what were this year's big trends in indie games specifically? We delve into the unusual prominence given this year to longer indie games, indie game sequels, and indie games as digital third spaces (because we know "friendslop" is mostly meant as an affectionate joke but haven't we landed on a much better name there?). Also, expect some spicy takes on whether Steam's monopoly in the PC gaming market is causing them to increasingly become more of a problem than a champion for indie publishing. We end as ever with our hyperfixations, and Rachel is keen to bring your attention to Thinky Dailies, a new daily series of in-browser brainteasers from our good pals over at Thinky Games – guaranteed to make you feel smarter than Wordle as well as being much, much less cursed. Liam is eager to highlight the excellent and highly timely video essay Greed is Destroying the World by Drew Gooden. And finally it's a rare musical recommendation from Rebecca, who's been listening to the Mountain Goats and their amazing new concept album, Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Meanwhile, you can find us at indieventurepodcast.co.uk or wherever you listen to podcasts. Don't forget that you can now join our dedicated Discord too, and be sure to check out our new Steam Curator page if you simply still can't get enough of us!

Is fair matchmaking actually bad design? And how exactly did gaming companies fumble the bag when it came to the army of PhD psychologists they employ? We talk: • Sweepstakes, social casino, velocity, and why most players never cash out • Why Wordle feels flat to some designers and why elegance is not the same as progression • Surveys as UX, not truth machines, and how to extract signal without lying to yourself • Compensating differentials, handicaps, and why 50 percent win rates kill progression • Bots, deception, and whether games are magic shows or fraud Chapters (00:00:00) - In the Case of Moral Utility(00:00:41) - The Game Economist Cast(00:01:42) - Phil vs. Wordle(00:05:57) - The Need for Difficulty in Word Games(00:10:39) - Total War: An Absurd 4x Game(00:13:34) - How Sweeps Are Getting Around the Gambling Laws(00:17:43) - Are Loot Boxes Legally Gambling?(00:21:29) - How Social Casino Works Without Sweeps(00:23:48) - How To Win at MMOs(00:27:03) - How to Win on Surveys(00:32:38) - The Cognitive Task of Food Preferences(00:36:24) - Have Surveys Ruined Mobile Games?(00:38:22) - People's feelings in 'Star Wars': Are they reliable?(00:39:22) - Battlefield 1: Skill Based Matchmaking(00:44:48) - What's The Argument for No Skill Based Matchmaking(00:48:45) - Is Bots Bad for Content Ethics?(00:53:58) - Rejecting Kantian Ethics
Upthinking Finance™ is now trademarked On the show this week, we're exploring the real-life transitions and perspectives around retirement and life after work. In this episode, we're joined by a diverse panel, Vicki Goodman, Darci Fersch, Cookie Talmage, Howard Lenoble, Joy Lunt, and Con Haffmans, who open up about their own journeys, challenges, and share their words of wisdom surrounding retirement. You'll hear a spectrum of views: some embrace the idea of retirement, while others challenge its very concept, redefining it as a time for pursuing passions, creativity, or simply maintaining purpose. Whether it's rediscovering music, running small businesses, volunteering, or savoring newfound freedom from alarm clocks, our guests share what brings meaning to their lives beyond careers. The conversation reflects on the emotional and practical sides of transition, highlighting the importance of financial planning, a supportive advisor, and, most importantly, a personal sense of fulfillment. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in...[00:00] Embracing retirement your way.[03:59] Favorite things about retirement.[07:17] What our guests loved the most about their working life.[09:15] The motive to continue to work as you get older.[11:56] Struggles in downshifting routine and redefining achievement.[13:56] Advice for planning and thriving in retirement. When Endings Become New BeginningsAs Mr Rogers said, “Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else.” For many, retirement is seen as an “ending,” but for the guests on this episode, it's just another beginning—one filled with self-discovery, purpose, and, most importantly, possibilities far beyond simply not working.Challenging the Traditional Narrative of RetirementThe discussion opens with candid admissions: Vicki Goodman always expected retirement, but didn't plan to do it so early; Darci Fersch isn't a fan of the concept or even the word “retirement”; and Cookie Talmage asks, “Why do I need to retire?” These initial reactions highlight a universal truth: the transition away from a traditional career is deeply personal and often full of mixed emotions.Instead of following a prescribed blueprint, the guests reveal the diverse ways in which they approach this transition. Howard Lenoble anticipated retirement as a goal, but also questioned whether it was truly attainable or even desirable. Con Haffmans, still not fully retired, laughs about working harder now than ever before, caring for horses, but finds his joy in this hard work rather than escaping from it.Purpose Over PassivitySeveral guests stress that retirement isn't about abandoning productivity. Vicki Goodman delights in the absence of an alarm clock and the freedom of mornings spent with coffee and Wordle, while Howard Lenoble revisits old passions like playing in bands, enriching his life, and even generating new income streams. Both emphasize a shift from obligation-driven schedules to self-defined, passion-fueled days.Darci Fersch reflects that control over your own time—the ability to choose where and how to spend it—is the most cherished part of post-career life. Even though she left her job at the top of her game, her move was driven by a desire to be more present with her family and more engaged in her personal interests. The Rewards of Staying EngagedRetirement, the guests agree, is more fulfilling when you pursue what you love. For Con Haffmans, that means life around horses, not financial investments. Even though his cowboy chapter was the worst financial choice, it was the happiest period of his life. Joy Lunt and Cookie Talmage see their ongoing work as a source of purpose, joy, and meaningful relationships; they aren't ready to put away the satisfaction they get...
Advent is a season of possibilities and there were a lot of possibilities on today's show. Dave had an issue with purchasing some gifts online and where to ship to and there are several possible answers as to why the gifts could only be delivered to certain locations. Bill played a "Wordle"-type game by giving us 2 of the 5 letters which opened it up to many possible answers. But there was only one correct answer and while many gave the right one, only one winner could be had. The...
I sat down with Tusar Barik, the SVP of Marketing at the New York Times, who's just past his first year in this newly created role. We explored how the Times has transformed from a traditional newspaper into a multifaceted media company spanning news, games, podcasts, cooking, sports, and more. Tusar leads a comprehensive team managing everything from measurement and data insights to product marketing, editorial advertising opportunities, and traditional communications. What struck me most was learning that the Times now reaches over 150 million registered users with 50 to 100 million weekly engagers, seeing the highest growth among Gen Z adults and audiences in the Midwest and South. The digital advertising business delivered over 20% year-over-year growth, proving that quality journalism and a direct relationship with readers creates a powerhouse advertising platform. We dove deep into how the Times is meeting consumers where they are through video-forward strategies, producing over 75 hours of professional video monthly and transforming podcasts into multimodal shows available as both audio and video. Tusar shared insights on their Brand Match generative AI product that delivers 30% improvements in both click-through rates and brand lift by intelligently matching advertiser briefs with the right content. We explored how games like Wordle have been part of the Times' DNA since the 1940s crossword, how The Daily creates deeply personal connections with millions, and why the Times sees itself as a solar system with news at the center. The conversation revealed a company that's successfully balanced subscription-first strategy with a thriving advertising business by staying true to its mission while innovating how it reaches and serves audiences._______________________________________________Key Highlights
Story Radio interviews Mathew Gostelow, the editor of Silent Screams: An Anthology of Quiet Horror, about trends in the horror genre, the meaning of 'quiet horror', the child's perspective in horror writing, contemporary vs historical fiction and many other topics such as Twin Peaks and Frankenstein. We listen to a reading of 'Barnabas Calstock's Last Wish' by the author Terry Holland (Trigger warning: this story contains references to war and violence that some listeners may find disturbing). About Mathew GostelowMathew Gostelow haunts a leafy suburb of Birmingham, UK. His CV is a chaotic patchwork quilt, including journalism, pheasant farming, catering, and marketing. Mat's taste in art, music, film, and literature is equally eclectic, although he tends to gravitate towards anything with a creepy, dreamy aesthetic. If you catch him staring intently into the middle distance, Mat is either thinking about Twin Peaks or cooked breakfasts. Some days he wakes early and scribbles strange tales. Mat has written several books, including two speculative short story collections entitled An Ill-Stitched Menagerie and See My Breath Dance Ghostly, and a novella-in-flash; Dantalion is a Quiet Place. Mat has also co-written a horror-thriller novella called Watcher with his friend JP Relph, and edited an anthology of quiet horror short stories, titled Silent Screams. He has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and Best Microfiction. As John returns from yet another triumphant, nay groundbreaking eye-climbing tour of the Alps, there are a few questions on everybody's lips: What records did he break this time? Wins are totted up, losses are struck off, and a new future for the BBC is hammered out. Watch out prime-time TV, Wordle is coming for you. A major player in the new BBC will be Ania Magliano, who stops by to get pelters about her boggle gameplay. This week on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast, Geordie & Michelle discuss psychic detectives...In 1983, 25-year-old Jacqueline Poole from west London was murdered in her home. Just streets away, a woman called Christine Holohan contacted police shortly after the crime, claiming to have received psychic visions about the killer, the victim and the scene. Her detailed descriptions seemed spot on - but the police didn't act on the info. Listen now to hear the twists and turns of Jacqueline's case and how DNA evidence retrospectively supported Christine's claims...Geordie follows with a look at the other side of the psychic detective coin... Do police actually use psychics to help solve cases? What are the numbers? Geordie has the stats! Plus she digs into the work of Benjamin Bradford, a noted skeptic and debunker, who has exposed psychic claims by analysing psychic methods and showing how supposed “psychic hits” can be explained through cold reading, coincidence, or selective memory. Psychic detectives... Real or fake? You decide! So pop on your headphones, grab a brown lemonade and join Geordie & Michelle for this week's episode, plus chat about jelly shoes, Wordle, creative swearing and more, only on Eavesdroppin' comedy podcast. Problems with Amazon's cloud services in the US have been felt around the world. Thousands of websites and apps were affected by an outage during the night, including TVNZ Plus, Neon, Sky TV, Snapchat and Wordle. Tech commentator Paul Spain says a lot of things got broken in the process of trying to undo the damage, and some businesses are still trying to recover. "When you break a lot of technology, sometimes it takes quite a bit of effort to actually get that fully back to operation, and possibly Amazon have been a bit cautious about putting thing back up to full speed, but they haven't officially indicated that from what I've seen." Hooked on LinkedIn's Queens? Gotta extend your Wordle streak in the New York Times games app before you start your day? You're in good company on today's Vergecast episode. Allison Johnson is joined by Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, world-class puzzle champs and hosts of the delightful Cracking the Cryptic, a YouTube channel where they solve a puzzle on camera every single day. They specialize in Sudoku — and not just the classic number games you might be familiar with. Simon and Mark tackle mind-bending, seemingly impossible puzzles, working through it all in realtime, sometimes over the course of several hours. What happens when you get stuck? How can you tell the difference between a puzzle made by a human and a computer-generated one? Why are we addicted to puzzle games all of a sudden? They help us crack the clues. Then Allison sits down with Marc Levoy, one of the pioneers of computational photography, to talk about his new camera app: Project Indigo. Levoy is known for his earlier work on the Pixel camera, and was a driving force in shaping phone photography into what it is now. We last caught up with him in 2020 when he left Google for Adobe, so we got up to speed on what the heck he's been doing for the last five years — and the important difference between HDR and an HDR-ish photo. Finally, Allison takes a hotline question from someone who is not particular about their phone camera's image quality, but does have a beef with camera bumps.
